How did everyone's first challenge day go??

Clearly, we need more cat paradoxes!

For me, yesterday was crazynuts. But just life as usual. Today is the first workout day, though. And I'm excited. Do you know why? Because I bought a new pair of workout shorts yesterday. Lol. [emoji12]

Where are you taking the stage combat class?  I did stage combat for 5.5 years in/immediately after college, and was an instructor for several years as well.  It's a blast if you've got a good/safe instructor/group.  Also a surprisingly good workout.

Heads up, though, swashbuckling, historically, referred to what were basically street gangs.  A buckler is a small shield often used with a rapier.  The "swashbucklers" would wear their sword so it rubbed on the buckler, making a "swash" sound to signal to anyone around that they were looking for a fight.  So, you might be signing up more for Three Musketeers-esk stuff than pirates.  Should still be a lot of fun, though!

It's an acting school in Denver that used to be the National Theatre Conservatory before it shut down, now it offers evening adult classes akin to continuing education. I trust that the instructor is good and safe; he's very well known and respected in the Denver theatre community. Plus, there's the option at the end of the 10 weeks to take the Society of American Fight Director's Skills Proficiency Test, which I will definitely aim for if possible!!

And yeah, the class description did mention Three Musketeers and Zorro and Princess Bride rather than pirates, but I hear swashbuckling and think pirates because that's just where my brain is at consistently. Still excited, though! It's the exact kind of sword-fighting I always wanted to do, even if it's more staged sword-fighting than actual sword-fighting. ^_^

Also, that is so cool you used to teach!! Where did you study/teach?

How did I live right outside of Denver for 6 years and not know of this?? That sounds like a ridiculous amount of fun. Enjoy!

I think it's only 3 years ago that the NTC shut down and they started offering the evening adult classes? In any case, I didn't know about it until about a year and a half ago myself and I've been living in Denver for almost 14 years! ^_^

not only should you invest (that's what this is: an investment) in learning that skill, but also invest in a good pirate outfit. because you cannot do one without the other.

make it happen.

That sounds awesome, and I wish there was something like that near where I live now. :)  SAFD is very good!

I trained and taught with a group called The Ring of Steel, based out of Ann Arbor, MI, as well as with the Theatrical Combat Network.  That one was formed by several of my friends who had been part of the first group, just as I was moving across the country, so I'm not sure where they are technically located.  Somewhere in MI.

I actually met my husband doing stage combat. :)  We both miss it A LOT because it is so fun.  Actually, if we could find a good practice space we would totally start teaching people out here.  Anyone in the Seattle area know of a good-sized indoor space with a hard floor and high ceilings that is available for rent on a regular basis for not too much money? :P
