Silmarilliane's Sixth Challenge

Recommended Posts

Good morrow fellow nerds.

My last two challenge attempts have been very much sub-optimal, with challenge five being an utter fail. Basically I injured my foot and spent the next couple of weeks sulking* because I couldn’t do any walking let alone high impact exercise. This is challenge six, but I'm still Level 5 due to the failing.

*eating chocolate

THIS CHALLENGE!

Life Goal

This remains as ever to reduce body fat and be less flabby. Also I want to get stronger and increase my knowledge of, like everything.

Year Goal

To get below 11 stone (currently around 11.5) and be able to do one chin up. It will happen dammit!

Challenge Goals

Calories: I MUST STAY WITHIN CALORIES. This is myfitnesspal calories set to lose 1lb a week and sedentary (1300), with added exercise calories. I’m allowed four days of no logging within the six weeks.

Walking: Now I can walk again (SO happy about this) I have to do at least 20 miles in any 7 consecutive days; my normal commute involves 5 miles a day. This will stop me being lazy on days off hopefully!

Weights: As I’m still off the high impact cardio until my foot is definitely better, I’ll pick up the slack with dumbbells. My workout will be 3x10 sets of bicep curls, shoulder press and bench press with my 10kg dumbbells followed by 60 sec plank. I have to do this at least 3 times in any 7 consecutive days.

EXCEPTION: I’m going to Edinburgh for a week in the second week of the challenge so will amend my calories to lose 0.5lb a week but I still have to stay within. Also as I won’t be carting my dumbbells up on the train, my workouts will be 3x20 pressups, bench dips and squats, and 60 sec plank.

Wish me luck!

Day one went well, stayed in calories, did 3.5 miles of walking and did the weights when I got home. So glad I made that a goal as my initial thought when I got home was 'what can I eat' and I picked up the dumbbells instead :D

Have done 3 miles already today though pub quizzing tonight so dinner will be sandwiches... hopefully I can restrain myself to not eat them all...

Also, I'm sure you'll all be THRILLED to hear that I've created an excel spreadsheet for this challenge too :)

mini update

I've stayed in calories each day (hooray!)

I've already walked 22 miles this week and will have walked 24.5 by the time I get home (hooray!)

I've done two lots of dumbbell workouts and am doing again this evening, making 3 (hooray!)

and because y'all love excel, here's my spreadsheet which has planned weights days, planned 'off calories' days and formulas to count the miles and weights for rolling seven days :D

On my way to Edinburgh and have pinched my sister's fitbit for the week. Hopefully it'll say I'm burning millions of calories so I can spend my time here eating my bodyweight in tablet 😃

Edinburgh is lovely, have managed to use the fitbit to ensure I'm eating loads and staying within calories. Not sure that'll work today as it's not even midday and I've had eggs Florentine followed by a Ferrero Rocher milkshake... This may have to be a day off / over calories 😃

I did complete my mini hotel workout yesterday (who knew bench dips were so difficult?!)

Lots of walking planned for tomorrow and Thursday so should be good to stay in calories those days, huzzah!

I'm almost 100% certain you are allowed to go over calories anywhere that can state a claim for independence. Which is why I holiday in Cornwall and Catalonia.

It was pretty special. Now planning on making my coeliac friend a gluten free version using g-free rice krispies to mimic the wafer 😃

Post-Edinburgh update!

So I had the Tuesday off calories (though I still logged: 1500 calories over, ouch!), and then Friday I was about 200 calories over because of the six hour train journey. I'm not feeling so bad about that day though as i had over 200 to spare from the Thursday and 100 spare on the Wednesday. Had a shock getting on the scales Saturday morning though as was half a stone up but checked again on Sunday and was back down again to 160lb (where I've been for a while). This is why scales are like, SO the best thing to use...

Other than food, I did my modified workout on Monday and Wednesday, and my dumbbell workout when I got home on Friday. Also walked loads in Edinburgh (over 60 miles Sunday-Friday) so my 'rolling seven day mile total' is looking very healthy :D

Great job sticking to your goals even though you were on holiday, I would have totally let it all go to shit! Glad to see you had a nice time too!

I completely thought I'd replied to this or at least 'liked' it. How rude I am!

Thaaaaanks, I'm glad I stuck at it and didn't have a backwards week - that's happened far too much recently :(

Still mostly on track, though have had two days this week of slight calorie 'fudging' where I probably did go slightly over but added exercise like going for a wee to balance it. These two days are completely the fault of a friend who took me to the pub and made me eat bar snacks. Completely.

Happy with my walking part of the challenge, the least number of miles I've done in a rolling seven days is 34 (which was the first seven days) and the highest was 65 (Edinburgh week). Also feeling like I'm getting back to the speed I used to walk at before my January and February foot woes which is awesome!

Am out this evening so started the day with my dumbbell workout to make sure I get it done, just need to do a 60 sec plank at some point (that's totally acceptable to do at work, right?!)

To do with learning all the things, I went to this drawing workshop on Tuesday after work and then took the afternoon off on Wednesday to go to this really interesting talk and discussion about David Lynch and architecture, stopping by this mini exhibition on the number 8 (the best number) on the way.

All very worthwhile and knowledge increasing :D

LOL at counting going for a wee in your calories. I would totally have done that too if I'd have thought about it... Glad to hear your foot woes are receding, and yes, planks you get paid for count double (like poops). I love your random lecture attendance although I thought three was the best number coz Blind Melon said so innit. Although I do have to concede that as the number 8 is an angled infinity sign, it might have a case.

So an update...

I've kept up the walking and the dumbbells. However have had a bit of a difficult time over the last few weeks so calories has gone a little to pot... Thursday was a planned day off, but then Friday, Saturday and Sunday ended up being complete comfort eating days (hello phish food ice cream...)

Back at work today though and determined (dammit!) to stick to calories.

This does mean that I've now had six days over calories and two days of 'sort of'. As a punishment I have to carry on my challenge for an additional week. Which will probably be a good thing as there's a 2 week gap...
