Darkfoxx 16: More Of The Same, + Ramping Up For Race Season

This challenge cycle is all about building on the momentum I recovered during last challenge to prep for this year’s race season. 

On the calendar so far:

There are quite a few races I’m keeping an eye on for official date announcements, and I want to find 1 more OCR to do. The goal is to do 5 OCRs + at least 1 5k per month. Maybe a 10k if the Oakley Women’s Only happens again this year. On months with no OCRs, I need to up my strength training and complete more races. 

Goal 1: Fitness

 

I feel like I need to continue with strength training/maybe focus on it more, but I really like bodyweight work. So, I think I’ll continue on with the HIIT/tabata style workouts I did last challenge through my PopSugar challenge + continue to work in cardio sessions on the treadmill. Those hill days are killer, but I know they’re doing me some good. I also need to buckle down and focus on getting that damn pull-up before my 1st OCR of the year. 

 

 

Goal 2: Metrics

 

Metrics make me happy and they work for me, so I'm sticking with them. As a refresher, my metrics are: 100 grams or under of carbs, 70 grams or over of protein, under 100 grams of fat and around 1500 calories. Water is the recommended 64 ounces. I track food with My Fitness Pal and need to find a good balance with apps to track sleep/water/exercise. Last year I had a Fitbit - since it decided to jump off my wrist, I’ve replaced it with a Misfit Flash, but am currently having issues getting the new majigger to play nice with all the apps it needs to be able to talk to. Weight and BF are still being tracked with my FitBit Aria scale. I also use a combo of FitBit + Zombies, Run! To track my quickly moving through space workouts if they're in the wide world. If I venture into the wide world, that is.

 

 

Goal 3: Get Stuff Done

 

I have so many little tasks I want to complete. On the top of the list: finish getting my old family pictures, etc. boxed up and sent off for digitization, finishing my ombre scarf knitting project, continue to weed out possessions I really don’t care about but feel pressured to keep. Also, I need to work to plug all my clothing into the Stylebook app, so I can get some good metrics/help realize my minimalist goals. 

 

 

Goal 4: Get Out Of My Comfort Zone

 

I’ve been doing really well with this over the past few challenges, and I need to be mindful of continuing down this track. The goal is to do 1 thing that forces me out of my schedule/hermit lifestyle a week. Meetups, book clubs, Facebook group meets, workout classes, or sportsy outings in places that aren’t my house are good, as is going out and exploring things on my own when the hubbs isn’t home on weekends. Lunch by myself out - very uncomfortable, especially when not submerged in my phone, but good for me.

Goal 1: Fitness


 


Continue on with the HIIT/tabata style workouts + continue to work in cardio sessions on the treadmill. Also, buckle down and focus on getting that damn pull-up before my 1st OCR of the year. 


 


Week 1 Grading: A. I got my workouts in, plus a little bit extra. 


Week 2 Grading: A. I had a little off-track workout drama (tightness and pain necessitating a foam rolling easy day), but I completed my first 5k of the season so BAM.


Week 3 Grading: A. I had a good workout week. 


Week 4 Grading: A. I got my workouts in.


Week 5 Grading: A. BAM

Week 6 Grading: A. I did what I could this week, balancing recovery from the 5k + power walking with strength training and yoga relaxation.  


 


Goal 2: Metrics


 


My metrics are: 100 grams or under of carbs, 70 grams or over of protein, under 100 grams of fat and around 1500 calories. 


 


Week 1 Grading: A. I stuck mostly to my metrics this week, even though that meant I ate some random shit during the weekend. 


Week 2 Grading: A. I had a good week, and this weekend wasn't too crazy. It wasn't perfect, but it wasn't ridiculous. 


Week 3 Grading: B. I made poor food choices this weekend. 


Week 4 Grading: A. I managed to not go too far off the rails this weekend - thanks to eating most of my "out" meals at paleo shangri-la. 


Week 5 Grading: A. I went off the reservation on Saturday and paid for it, but damn it was good. 

Week 6 Grading: A-. I had a lot of meat this weekend - and a lot of calories. 

 


 


Goal 3: Get Stuff Done


 


Finish getting my old family pictures, etc. boxed up and sent off for digitization, finishing my ombre scarf knitting project, continue to weed out possessions I really don’t care about but feel pressured to keep. Week 1 Grading: A. I didn't finish anything, but I worked toward all the mini goals that make up this umbrella goal - knitting, pictures, Stylebook & minimalism.


Week 2 Grading: A. Things are actually getting checked off my list. Wonderbar!


Week 3 Grading: A. I sent both boxes of pictures out, knitted, and worked a bunch on my clothing app. 

Week 4 Grading: A. I worked on the clothing app a bit, and knitted some. This week, I also heard back from the places that have my pictures, etc. 

Week 5 Grading: A. I finished a knitting project (and started another), worked on the clothing app, and got half my pictures back this week. 


Week 6 Grading: A. Pictures are 3/4 digitized and I'm working on organizing the files + putting the hard copies away; I've finished a bunch of scarf projects and have started another, and I've been keeping track of my clothing in the app I purchased. It's helped me not buy things 'just because they're on sale' a few times, since those things weren't on my 'needs to be replaced' list and I am working currently on taking better pictures of my clothing (with a body in them), so I can visualize how outfits are actually going to look in real life - instead of how they'll look on a mannequin.  


 


Goal 4: Get Out Of My Comfort Zone


 


Do 1 thing that forces me out of my schedule/hermit lifestyle a week. 


 


Week 1 Grading: A. I attended book club, messed my schedule up with a doctor's visit, and attended a book signing. I also signed up for another race, and put myself out there in the world for my blogging a bit. 


Week 2 Grading: B. The only thing I did here was interrupt my schedule for a doctor's appointment. Which didn't even turn out to be that anxiety-inducing. (score)


Week 3 Grading: A. I yoga'ed and I went somewhere new. 


Week 4 Grading: A. I worked to get out of my comfort zone in small ways this week. 


Week 5 Grading: A. I pushed myself this week and was uncomfortable. 


Week 6 Grading: A. I stretched that comfort zone without the aid of musical accompaniment.

Week 1 Day 1 Update
 
Goal 1: Fitness

 

Today's workout was Day 29 of the PopSugar fitness challenge I've been doing - 20-minute no-running cardio. I did pretty well, though I got winded doing some of the more repetitive actions (cross jacks, burpees, mountain climbers) and ended up taking water sips where necessary. 

 

 

Goal 2: Metrics

 

Breakfast: Kind Strong Roasted Jalapeño Almond Protein Bar + coffee with cashew milk

Lunch: Chinese dumpling and vegetable soup

Snacks: 1/4 cup mixed raw nuts

Dinner: London broil with a green bean/hard boiled egg/lime vinaigrette salad

Snack: Raisins

 

Calories: 1,351 out of 1,500

Carbs: 86 out of 100g

Fat: 63 out of 100g

Protein: 113 out of 70g

Week 1 Day 2 Update

 
Goal 1: Fitness

 

Today was meh. The hubby drove me up the freaking wall all day, work crap was annoying to deal with, and I was generally unprepared to go into the night's schedule of yoga at 5 pm. So I compromised. I layed the yoga mat out in the kitchen and did dog yoga (yoga while being attacked by my dog) until the hubbs came home from his errand. And then I finished dinner.

Not my finest workout, but it's better than doing absolutely nothing - which is what I felt like doing. 

 

 

Goal 2: Metrics

 

Breakfast: DH's green smoothie with hemp protein + coffee with cashew milk

Lunch: Leftover green bean salad + leftover lemongrass chicken meatballs in pineapple orange sambal

Dinner: Mexican pulled beef tacos and 2 bites of my gross side - somehow I managed to screw up carrots, jalapeños, garlic, shallot and green peppers. 

Snack: The rest of my uncured coppa salami and mixed nuts

 

Calories: 1,551 out of 1,500

Protein: 90 out of 70g

I knitted but didn't get much else done. Tidied the kitchen and living room a bit, but no work on the clothing app or getting pictures sent off.

Goal 1: Fitness

 

Today's workout was my last PopSugar Get Fit 2015 day - the 30-minute Fat Fry Fusion Workout. I think I'm digging these PopSugar workouts, so I think I'll continue on with the 21 day abs program. 

 

 

Goal 2: Metrics

 

Breakfast: DH's green smoothie with hemp protein + coffee with cashew milk

Lunch: Half a can of leftover stewed tomatoes and leftover spicy pulled pork - because I'm out of veggies

Dinner: Taiwanese popcorn chicken (paleo-ified) with roasted broccoli. Delicious.

Snack: 1/4 cup raw mixed nuts

 

Calories: 1,091 out of 1,500

Carbs: 50 out of 100g

Fat: 69 out of 100g

Protein: 86 out of 70g

 

 

 

Goal 3: Get Stuff Done

 

I knitted - I'm halfway through my ombre scarf! And I finished pulling photos together to be sent off. I still need to locate the couple of videos I want to send off and get everything sorted by size. And, you know, actually *out* the door.

Lol. I'm in it for the swag. :) I don't know *what* swag, but sunglasses would be fantastic.

Week 1 Day 4 Update

 
Goal 1: Fitness

 

I started PopSugar's 21-Day Flat-Belly Challenge. Day 1 was a bananas treadmill workout. I did half "run" program and half "run/walk" program (wherein the run/walk was kicked up by half a speed increment at each stage). 

 

 

Goal 2: Metrics

 

Breakfast: DH's green smoothie with hemp protein + coffee with cashew milk

Lunch: Leftover pulled pork with sauerkraut - still no veggies; I'm eating fridge dregs (tasty, though)

Snack: 1/4 cup mixed raw nuts

Dinner: Leftover pulled beef with baked sweet potatoes

Snack: 1/4 cup raw mixed nuts

 

Calories: 1,426 out of 1,500

Carbs: 77 out of 100g

Fat: 92 out of 100g

Protein: 80 out of 70g

 

 

 

Goal 3: Get Stuff Done

 

I am soooooo close to finishing color 2 of 3 on my scarf - and I dug up the videos that need transferring. And actually put some things *back* into the closet, so win all around.

Week 1 Days 5-7 Update & Week 1 Wrap-up

 
Goal 1: Fitness

 

Friday was my rest day, (though I ended up walking a bit to attend a book signing + to take the hubbs to the doctor), Saturday I walked a bit for book club, and Sunday I walked even more - in the snow - trying to get to the yarn shop, find food before the hubbs and I perished or killed each other, and then to get to the other yarn shop when the first one was too ridiculously expensive. Walking. Driving snow. Fun. 

 

Week 1 Grading: A. I got my workouts in, plus a little bit extra. 

 

 

Goal 2: Metrics

 

Friday

Breakfast: 2 Grande coconut caffe mistos 

Lunch: The last of my TJ's sauerkraut + pulled pork + 2 fried eggs -- and it was magnificent 

Dinner: Whole Foods hot bar - roasted mushrooms, beets & carrots + meatballs

 

Calories: 1,066 out of 1,500

Carbs: 61 out of 100g

Fat: 61 out of 100g

Protein: 82 out of 70g

 

Saturday

Breakfast: Smoked chipotle beef stick, black truffle almonds, coffee with cashew milk

Lunch: Bowl of chili, 1 Magner's hard cider, 2 glasses of hot hard cider

Dinner: Pork rinds + mixed raw nuts

 

Calories: 1,361 out of 1,500

Carbs: 97 out of 100g

Fat: 69 out of 100g

Protein: 61 out of 70g

 

I tried today, I really did. This was book club day and we met at a bar/restaurant with an 80s menu -- chili was the best option on the menu, and even then I ended up picking out half a cup of beans. The hot cider was a necessity - it was cold in that back room!

 

 

Sunday

Breakfast: Coffee with cashew milk + Grande caramel flan latte, 1 pump, with coconut milk (in a calculated effort to make the sugar jack my stomach up enough so that I didn't *need* to eat for an hour or two -- success

Lunch: Pork burger with bacon on a gluten free bun + 1/4 of my order of truffle fries

Dinner: Whole Foods Hot Bar strikes again - I was craving a muffaletta sandwich for some reason, so had the antipasti salad (cubed meat, olives + oil & vinegar) with 2 Tbsp. black olive tapenade mixed in

 

Calories: 1,342 out of 1,500

Carbs: 79 out of 100g

Fat: 78 out of 100g

Protein: 74 out of 70g 

 

Week 1 Grading: A. I stuck mostly to my metrics this week, even though that meant I ate some random shit during the weekend. 

 

 

 

Goal 3: Get Stuff Done

 

I worked on this goal a bunch this weekend. Knitted (I'm now on color 3 of 3 on my scarf), helped the hubbs pick yarn for his second project, sorted some of the pictures I need to send into size categories, worked to silhouette my clothing on Stylebook, and chucked two more shirts. 

 

Week 1 Grading: A. I didn't finish anything, but I worked toward all the mini goals that make up this umbrella goal - knitting, pictures, Stylebook & minimalism.

 

 

 

Goal 4: Get Out Of My Comfort Zone

 

Friday I accompanied the hubbs to his doctor appointment (at the sacrifice of keeping my schedule), Saturday I had book club at the new place (which kind of worked, though we all ended up spending more than we wanted and tying up a table for 6 hours - which didn't *seem* to be horrible for the waitresses (I pre-warned them), but still wasn't ideal), and did very little on Sunday. And I almost completely forgot - I attended a book signing on Friday for Nom Nom Paleo. And I got a minute or two to thank Michelle Tam for her blog (totally forgot to mention I write one too), plus she took my dinner suggestion and went to my favorite bbq spot in that neighborhood. 

 

Sidebar: I think I need to comment more on other people's Instagram shots, etc. I don't know if it was related or not, but after mentioning something about it being nice to meet her and being glad she liked the bbq rec, I got a bunch of hits on my blog this whole weekend. Score!

Goal 1: Fitness

 

Today's schedule didn't work out for working out. My body also had the Monday unhappies and for some weird reason my left knee was twinging a bunch when walking. Weird. 

 

 

Goal 2: Metrics

 

Breakfast: DH's green smoothie with hemp protein + coffee with cashew milk

Lunch: Leftover Vietnamese chicken bites + Thai dressing

Dinner: Daikon noodle salad with shredded red cabbage and pulled beef

Snack: 1/4 cup raw mixed nuts

 

Calories: 1,260 out of 1,500

Carbs: 46 out of 100g

Fat: 84 out of 100g

Protein: 93 out of 70g

 

I also started tracking my sleep with the Misfit Flash:

 

Sleep: 08:24; 3 hours 49 minutes of restful sleep

Steps: 6212 / 2.3 miles

I knitted a tiny bit at lunch, and that's about it.

Week 2 Day 2 Update

 
Goal 1: Fitness

 

Day 2 of the PopSugar 21-Day Flat Belly Challenge: 20-Minute Power Plank Workout. Today's workout was a hot mess. I ended up working out in one of the dance rooms because that's where the mats were, which was just folly. Super-slick floors were no bueno. I took my shoes off to mitigate mat cast-off damage (these mats suck and shred if you actually work out on them), which didn't work - bonus: slip and freaking slide all workout. I only got 2 sets in - my body was seriously unhappy (hips are crazy tight and I felt really weak) and the sliding business just wasn't fun. 

 

 

Goal 2: Metrics

 

Breakfast: DH's green smoothie with hemp protein + coffee with cashew milk

Lunch: Leftover daikon/red cabbage slaw with pulled beef

Snack: 1/4 cup roasted mixed nuts

Dinner: Kung Pao brussels with Nom Nom Paleo's Cracklin Chicken
