Starting weight on Monday 2/23/15 : 156.5

(I had gotten down to a one time only reading of 151 in the last challenge before getting sick.)

Because I want to get my weekends under control, I decided to weigh in on Friday mornings to see what my healthy lifestyle accomplishes during the week, and then, of course, the standard Monday weigh in to be used as the official once a week gauge.

Pre-Weekend Weight 2/27/15 : 152.2

Holy smoke balls?!   4.3 pounds???   I don't know whether to be amazed-excited or concerned!   That's like a pound a day.    Now, it IS the first week "back on track" and it was coming off a weekend binge, so water weight + extra sodium crap + whatever else.   I also have not had a single meal out this week.   So 5 days no restaurant food means I am not getting all the crap preservatives and super doses of salt from my meals.

I'm gonna take this as awesome news, and consider this to be more accurate of maybe where my "real" starting point is.  I imagine it's going to even out going into week two- we shall certainly see.    If it DOESN'T ... if I continue to lose fast, I suppose that means I really am not eating enough, and will up my calories a bit.   I'd rather lose slower and smarter, and build a body that can maintain that sort of input/output, than rush to a finish line that has no rewards.

tumblr_mxzax81oVr1sq1jxho8_500.gif

I finally got rid of the last of my DOMS from earlier this week, and even though I have a hockey game tonight, I really wanted to make sure I get 3 strength days in this week... that meant today!  At lunch.  I went back there and just, from the very start, felt so full of energy and motivated and ready to kick ass.

Friday 2/27 - Work Out, RARR!

Warmup - 3 minutes jump rope

Bench Press

1 x 10 x 45 (warm up)

1 x 8 x 65

1 x 8 x 85

^^Judging by this, I think Haikoo is right and it won't take as long to get back to where I was, as it did to get there in the first place. :D

Goblet Squat

3 x 8 x 40

Side Planks

3 x 30" each side

Inverted Ring Rows

3 x 8

Wow so much happenings!

First, awesome job resisting the sweets. I know how hard that is!!!!!

On the weight--the same thing happens to me when I stop eating like crapola all the time. Water weight can *really* fluctuate a lot but as soon as I start eating right, I suddenly feel a lot lighter.

Wait, eating healthy and you have more energy and umph!? Me to, actually LOL I was just thinking today "Huh, I feel pretty good." and then sarcastic me answered myself "Gee, wonder why. Perhaps because you haven't eaten so much crap this week?"   Let's stay strong, girl! *HIGH FIVE*

If today's feelings of motivation and empowerment don't encourage me to turn this into an all the time habit of healthy eating and exercise, I am a moron!   I am totally with you Haikoo - this feel good stuff is awesome!!   *high five back*

So.... I just had the most fantastic hockey game tonight.    So much fun!    Great pace, evenly matched teams, some good things happening out there.

First, was this beauty.   OMG.   This is pretty rare at our level of play, really.   So you can hear the bench and my friend filming, getting all excited.

And then there was this... finally getting that monkey off my back!   It's been a hard season for me.  I missed the first 3 months for my MCL injury, played Dec/Jan, then got very sick and missed all of February.    This?   Felt REALLY good.  (But actually, not as good as that amazing tic-tac-toe passing shift.)

Now, hopefully, I can fall asleep in the next 14 minutes, since I need to be up at 8:30.  OOF.

~Monday, monday... ba da... ba da da daaaa.~

Ahem.

So, this coming weekend is huge hockey weekend for me, and I will be out of town from Saturday morning early until Sunday evening D&D time.    I'll be playing 3 games within a 24 hour period.   Knowing that there is NO way I can get a strength session in on Sa/Su - and even though I did a pretty hefty strength session yesterday ...

I DID ONE TODAY!

Monday 3/2 - No way, for srs Starpuck?  Back to back workout days?

Yesterday's was pretty upper body/arms intensive, so Wufkar helped me sort out what to do today.

She said "Totally kill your legs" -and I was totes gonna not let that happen...

Warmup - 2 minutes jump rope

Wall Sits

60" x 3

Turkish Get Ups

12# kettlebell - 3 x 5 (each leg)

10 total get ups per set

Clams with Bands

3 x 15 each side

Busting out some old PT foo

3-Way Lunges

Annnnd here is where I died lol...

3 x 10 per leg

Where each rep is 1 forward lunge, then one side lunge, then one reverse lunge!

Side Planks

3 x 30 each side

I really haven't had a winter workout in the whse get me as sweaty and heart pumped up as this one did!   After my workout, I was in the kitchen trying to make my sandwich and I squatted down to get my groceries out of the drawer and my legs were already shaking.     I admit, I fear the DOMS I am about to get in the coming 24 hours lol...  but it was a great workout!

Here's your random for the day:

Last night I was dreaming. I don't know what about, but it was probably strange and unsettling, since my dreams usually are. And then the dream came to an end, but my dream brain decided that I should go from wherever I was for my dream to Chicago to watch you play hockey, because I had time before my alarm went off (that thought I remember distinctly. It was a disembodied voice, and it literally said 'Go to Chicago, you've got time'). I've never been to Chicago, so my dream brain conjured up some city-like area. I parked and walked around the back of the arena and got inside just as the game was coming to an end. You and the other team were tied 6-6. The other team's goalie had her mask knocked off, I think, and they took a time out. I noticed you on the bench with your helmet off, and you jammed it back on and jumped on the ice for the last play of the game. When they lined back up for the face-off, both teams did it backwards, but your team was the only one who noticed. Your team was trying to get the ref to wait so you could switch back to the proper side, but the ref ignored you and dropped the puck anyway. The other team got it and skated down and scored just before the buzzer, so your team lost. The other team celebrated while your team tried to get the refs to realize what they'd done and reset the clock, but they ignored you and skated off the ice.

The stands were full of spectators and they were all getting up and leaving at this point. I pushed my way through the crowd to where the refs were coming off the ice and proceeded to give them a piece of my mind and tell them how terrible they were at their job. And then I thought I should probably leave before you came off the ice, because I was worried you'd notice me and be creeped out by the fact that I left my other dream to come to dream-Chicago just to watch you play hockey. So I walked back to my car and drove off, but I couldn't figure out what way to go to get home. Even when I looked at Google maps on my phone, I was just confused, and I ended up stranded on the side of a road that lead to a big yard where transport trucks were stored. A transport truck lady stopped to help me figure out the map, but then my alarm went off, so I never found out if I made it home.

And ya. There you have it. My brain is weird.......

Dare mighty things

^

This???

This is amazing!  LOL.  I love it Obax!!!   Hahaha.  Aren't brain-dreams crazy things?   That is TOTALLY something my brain would conjure up for sure.   And can I say that non-dream-brain Starpuck is so flattered that your brain-dream sent you to Chicago to watch my team play hockey!?  AND that you gave the refs a piece of your mind!!  Hahah awesome.

I hope my dream-brain sends me up your way!    Or better yet, sends both of us to some yet uncharted middle ground for a NF hockey chick tournament!   (I still think that'd be a blast haha.)

ON HEART RATE MONITORS - Chest Strap (Polar, etc) vs Wrist Band Styles

For those of you who had asked about the Fibit Charge HR vs the Polar HRM as far as caloric burn estimate, I feel confident after 10 days to give an honest review.

Except for walking/running as workouts - the Fitbit Charge HR is absolutely and horrifically inaccurate.  (As a note, the site warns that many types of exercise will just not do well for garnering accurate displays.)    The light-pulse technology for measuring heart rate depends on too many situational variables to be any kind of good purchase for those who train intensively.  Boxing, HIIT, weight lifting, hockey --- anything that your wrist moves in ways that may not be rhythmically steady -- all throw it off.

I consistently found the Fitbit measuring my heart rate between 95-109 during my strength session, at the very same time my Polar watch was listing 130-165!!    (Pull ups, push ups and squats all get my heart rate up quite a bit, and this has been consistent with my training since time began.)     My Fitbit, through all my past hockey games and workouts, has failed to monitor me even ONCE in 'peak zone'.   On the same occasions, my Polar has tracked me up to 20 minutes or more in peak.  (Hockey games mostly.)

The caloric difference between the two, by the time the workout ends, has been over 100 calories.   Today for example, during a 30 minute workout with a 15 minute stretch/cool down:

Fitbit:   Max HR 146 - Ave 110 - Calories 187

Polar:  Max HR 171 - Ave 131 - Calories 312

That said.  I HAVE enjoyed using the Fitbit as a means to gauge how much I burn during sleep/at rest/sitting around at work.     When linked with MFP - and if set up to allow negative adjustments for Fitbit, I can let the FB gather my every day/every hour activity level/HR and calorie burn - then override the Fitbit calories by manually entering them on MFP from my Polar's tracking.

Long and short of it?  If you wanted to get just ONE method of tracking calories burnt during exercise, and you find yourself participating in a variety of workouts and sports - I would recommend the traditional chest strap monitoring available through, now, a variety of suppliers for heart rate monitors.   If you're a walker/jogger and not too worried about making sure you have a good guess on calories in vs out, the wrist based methods of HR monitoring and calorie tracking could be a decent base.

Super interesting and thank you for the review! I have a mio link - a wrist strap hrm - and I have to wear it so tightly to get a good reading. I am super curious about the jawbone up3 because it uses bioimpedance instead of optical HRM, but it is never going to be released, apparently.

Pretty quiet day today.

Boss is on vacation and that means double the workload, but also a level of workload that normally bypasses me to go straight to him.    This morning was caarraazy.  I still pulled myself away at noon and went back to row for 30m.    Rowing is boring.   Very, very boring.   So I brought my tablet out there, propped it up on the box next to the row machine and watched two episodes of Gurrenn Lagann while I rowed.  Woot.

Dentist after work tonight.    Then Thurs D&D group.   I brought some of the baked zucchini rigatoni from Tuesday nights dinner with me- which will leave work with me, travel to the dentist and then get nommed at my friends house.    I am feeling sketchy about the time between lunch (1pm) and rigatoni (7pm) keeping me held on just a snack of 2 clementines and 28 almonds.   I might throw a Protein Bar in there, and just force myself to NOT snack at gaming.  But THAT is tough.

I need to get my arting on this week soon, or I am gonna be in trouble!!

Also - last week I was losing a pound a day.   (First week back on the train syndrome)   This week I am losing 2oz a day ... and it's sooooo sloooooow and blaaaah. (I know, I know, just.   Damn if you don't get spoiled by first week 'cut out the craps' numbers.)

Thanks for the thoughts on the HRMs. It adds some good data to my assessment of a HRM's potential usefulness to myself.

I agree with Raxie that a protein bar is (was?) a good option for an in between snack, that's a long time to go, and having an extra that's fairly healthy will help with the battle against the less healthy stuff later on.

Dare mighty things
