I have a confession to make.  I used to watch Inspector Gadget every day when I was a kid.  Then I grew up and found out that the voice actor was originally from Get Smart.

Mind.  Blown.

Today I finally feel like a real person.  I ate breakfast.  And then didn't immediately fall asleep.  I have a cunning plan...

I'll be off to class tonight and probably end up running the kick night.  Given that I know that there will be two very new students, I also know that I'll be spending the majority of the time teaching, which will do good things for my energy reserves.

This weekend is going to be pretty busy.  My nephew is turning 3 and my sister is having a superhero party for him.  Note to self:  Find Superman t-shirt, contact lenses and hair gel...  Sunday is my Exalted game.  I haven't played Exalted in quite a while, and I'm pretty excited to play an overpowered god-king again.  This means I won't make it class on Saturday, but I think visiting my family and flinging my nephew about counts as a workout.

I played Exalted many years ago.   I don't think it lasted long.    I remember our GM brought pudding down stairs, as a prop.   REAL PUDDING.   And we were at some old lady's house, and she offered us some food after our travels.    He asked us who wanted to eat it, and we all said, SURE!  Because, we got REAL pudding if we did haha.    It was totally poisoned.  LAWL.

Glad you are feeling better 7FG!  *hug*

My group is pretty system-savvy, so we have a tendency to encounter things like a Dragon-Blooded army or, Second Circle demon souls.  My Storyteller is also one of those GMs who can tailor a game to any type of character archetype, so this mash-up party is going to be chock full of strange interactions and social combat and societal engineering.

Day one of nerd weekend is over. Had my monthly board game night last night. Played Betrayal at House on the Hill and Samurai Spirit. Super fun night. Quote of the night: "I saw the old man beard and I was going to rock it."

One of my friends brought a book from a friend's library detailing the basic techniques of hapkido. I skimmed through as much of it as I could in between turns. What it made me realise is how difficult it is to communicate martial arts theory. The black belt who wrote the book was a second generation student of GM Choi, but it was very clear reading the instructions and following the diagrams that while he could perform the techniques I was familiar with, much of the nuance and detail that makes hapkido so effective was entirely lost. Master Choe demonstrated everything very well, but the instruction only skimmed the barest surface of the technique.

It got me thinking again about the tragedy of the martial arts tradition. RP talked a bit about it after the loss of his teacher. The essential tragedy is that a teacher only has so much time to communicate their knowledge. There is such a vast gap between the ability and subtle unconscious knowledge that makes them a master and the consumption and absorption of that ability by their students. My master has Parkinson's Disease and I am heartbroken by the knowledge that there is now a clock on how much time I have to learn from him. How much knowledge will be lost when he can no longer move effectively under his own power? It's something I don't like to think about.

It is a driving goal of mine to earn my fourth degree and have the right to be called sabumnim. Sharing my master's legacy became important to me some time ago. I can't remember when it happened, but I reached a point a few years ago where I had this hunger to expand the art and show it to more people. Teaching became my preferred activity at the club because of the many lessons I could share and the insights I found from the teaching process. Watching my friends progress and being to have deeper and more complex conversations about the roots of the art and why our movements function the way they do. It continues to amaze me when they have a realization and tell me that they have finally understood a concept I've tried to explain many times in the past.

Catspaw needs to get google onto anagathics...

I'm sorry that I am so nerdy that everything I hear can be filtered into some memory of some game, or rpg, or anime or movie I've seen.     I couldn't help but think of Gray and Ur while reading about your master and your feelings.   Like Kishi said, it's an epic quest, but if I had to put money on it, I'd put my money on you.

Lovely weekend of nerd time too.   *hug*

Just found your thread and wow. That music in your first posts? Good beats.

Regarding masters passing on the art, maybe there's less finality than there used to be. We have so much technology at our disposal that recording technique, philosophy, and narrative is more possible than ever--and the results are more accessible than ever before via the Internet. Thoughts?

Oof.  What a fun week!  I love living alone and driving an hour to be able to see my wife for a few scant minutes before she needs to go to sleep.  Fun times.

I do appreciate the comments about martial arts teaching and the difficulty with passing on the knowledge of masters.  What inspired that ramble was reading a book on hapkido written by a second generation master taught directly by Master Ji Han Jae.  For those who are unaware, Master Ji Han Jae was the most influential student of GM Choi in the development of modern hapkido.  So this guy's pretty close to the source.  My troubles from reading this book were that the physicality of the art are not present in the medium.  In the Information Age, data is ubiquitous.  We can "know" almost anything basically instantly.  The difficulty with martial arts is that there are certain plateaus of learning which require a lot of practice and repetition and when you "get it", a master is able to see and identify that position and then pass on the next level of teaching.  This is especially true at the black belt level where you are refining the system of movement you are learning at such a high level that your improvement may only be 5% or less.  That fine grained detail is extremely difficult to explain, and thus requires the moments of epiphany that martial artists experience.  A good master can see those moments in the students' awareness and movement and then communicate the direction to the next epiphany.  Now it may be that I simply have not encountered a digital or text medium that has that level of awareness, but that's the big thing I feel is lost when a master passes before their time.

No time for anything more.  I'm leaving for Michigan very soon and I'll be gone until Sunday.  It's nerd time and I need to carry a Mir around for a few days.

I miss nerds.

But I'm going to class tonight and babying a wrecked shoulder from driving for too many hours over the weekend.  Then ice.  Then seeing my wife for a few short hours.  Then sleep. . Then devising a devious punishment for a certain Starpuck.

Drive less.  Ice more.  Skype your wife.  Sleep.

I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.

I didn't mention my class on Monday. I'm still pretty foggy from living alone this week.

There's one kick we learn at black belt. It's an incredibly nuanced movement and we spend our first degree self-teaching it, with some guidance from higher ranks. I realized that I've stopped receiving guidance from my master and am just left to kick when I practice it. More than that, I'm being given a teaching role with the newer black belts. There's a young guy who graded about six months after me, but took a long hiatus. I've been working a lot with him and I am seeing exactly where I was a year ago in his kick. It is such a powerful feeling to get that reinforcement of progress. And to be trusted for the teaching of such a pivotal technique.

In our black belt class, we just ran through cycles of stick sparring. The last cycle was each of us squaring off against Master Cha. Now, he's over 60, was diagnosed with Parkinson's two years ago and is actually half my size. Despite all that, I was basically helpless. It was like fighting a viper. He is ridiculously fast. I've gotten into a habit of moving in hard on an opponent when sparring simply because everyone is smaller than me and they balk enough to get a solid hit in. Not with the master. I have a lovely bruise on my collar bone to remind me where being lazy gets me. Still, it was very educational and gave me good feedback on how fast I am. I am fast "for my size" but not yet objectively fast.

Today is more kicking then picking up my wife for the weekend. I'm looking forward to being able to spend some time with her.

Your stories about your class and master are so awesome to read 7F.   My imagination might be getting out of hand, especially with the amount of anime I've been watching lately, but it just sounds so amazing.     I wish I could see it live someday!    (No I don't, because then for sure I'd be soooo inspired I'd want to start learning.)
