I've been absent for the last challenge, but I haven't been a total slacker. Have decided to return to the fold and start keeping an official log again.

Goal

Still continuing on my goal to get my BF% down to around 15% for my wedding in November.

Missions

  1. Workout 4 times a week, following the You Are Your Own Gym routine that I've been using.
  2. Stay hydrated, drinking 6-8 big glasses of water every day.
  3. Eating grains on a limited basis, as part of a post-workout meal that also counts for my lunch that day.

Objectives

Work out:

  • A - 4x that week
  • B - 3x that week
  • C - 2x that week

Hydration

  • A - 6 big glasses of water
  • B - 5
  • C - 4

Grains

  • A - Only after a workout OR Not at all if a rest day.
  • B - Eaten on a workout day, but not as part of a post-workout meal or snack.
  • C - Eaten on a rest day.

I have a friend who has been powerlifting for a while and I may switch out some of my usual workouts for that with her. Not sure how I'll count that yet, but I'm excited to try it. :)

Eee, very excited. going to go to do a leg workout on Wednesday with my friend. She's getting me a free pass to her gym since she, uh, works there. :P We will see how it goes.

Today I successfully avoided any grains, so A for me there. Did happen to have a delicious smoothie for breakfast and steaks for dinner with broccoli and mashed potatoes plus an awesome gravy from the beef shank I made on Sunday. Food is so good, I love food.

My body tells me no, but I want more! I. Want. More!

Yesterday 2-24-15

B on the water and B on the meal, and that of course means I got a workout in. This was...especially important. Yesterday I got some pretty upsetting news about my plans for this summer, and not to exaggerate or minimize but I spent most of the day in a pretty serious funk and/or on the verge of crying. At some point, about 7pm, I just...I was so miserable I had to workout. Which is sort of the opposite of how it normally goes - normally I would've been through 3 boxes of cookies and onto a 4th with some ice cream to wash it down. Instead I had a snack, worked out, made steaks for dinner with broccoli...it was good. A crappy day that ended really well.

Today! 2-25-15

A on the water! C on the meal, poot. No workout today, but planning my core/back workout tomorrow and a leg day at the gym on Friday. The workout today was canceled with my friend on account of her quitting her job at the gym where we were going to work out, ha! So Friday it is, and we'll be using the gym at school after class which is more convenient anyway. :)

I used to do weight lifting, but most of it was with machines. Using a barbell will be totally new to me.

There have been some great beef sales in our area lately, and my fiance gets sick of chicken all the time (what?! how can this be?! I have no idea, I love chicken) so I have been doing a lot of braising and steak-cooking. :D

I could never get sick of chicken, thankfully. Love the stupid stuff.

Sorry to hear you got bad news, but dang if that wasn't a great way to respond to it. The gym can be very therapeutic, can't it?

2-26-15

Food, C. Water, B, and no workout. I have no explanation. Not a great day for achieving goals.

2-27-15

Food: B

It was ÐœÐ°Ñланица(Maslanitsa) yesterday and there was a party thrown by the Russian department. So many bready things, and I was so hungry...so, yeah. However, I said at the very beginning of this all way back in November that for Holidays and dates I take a pass on avoiding grains at inappropriate times. Holidays and dates are both infrequent enough that it works out alright. There was lots of dancing, though it wasn't exactly what you'd call exuberant enough to make you sweat it was still pretty fun. :)

Water: A, and a very enjoyable workout. :D I had taken a loong extended break from exercise and when I started again two weeks ago my body was all "HA! You think you can just pick up where you left off?! HUBRIS!" and I could hardly walk for a week. :-| So I have been repeating the last bit of the program where I was but with slightly easier exercises. However, yesterday I moved on to the next part of the program - hurrah for supersets! - and changed a few of the exercises for slightly easier ones. This is probably one of the things I like the most about YAYOG is the way that you can adapt the movements to where you're at. :D Next week I am *hopeful* that I can just do the program as written. If not...well. HUBRIS! Recently I have considered getting a foam roller, but not really sure why to use it?

Foam rolling helps break up knots in your tissue and can increase your range of motion. This is a good primer about it: http://breakingmuscle.com/mobility-recovery/what-is-a-foam-roller-how-do-i-use-it-and-why-does-it-hurt

It's not 100% necessary, but not a bad thing to pursue!

B on food. As soon as these freakin' Girl Scout cookies are gone, this well be so much easier...

A++ on water - I lost count of how many glasses of water I drank today.

A on workouts for the week as long as we count today as part of last week and I kinda do, lol. I have ordered some neoprene pads to use when doing Let Me Ups with my fiance's desk so that the corner of it doesn't cut into my hands. Means I'll probably do a leg day tomorrow, or maybe rest? Not entirely certain. Today was back/core muscles and I gotta say that it totally changed my mood around to work out. I know I keep mentioning it, but it's just ASTOUNDING the difference before and after. Also wound up practically running (walking very very fast) to the store a .6 miles away to get some medicine for my fiance who's getting over a nasty and stubborn cold. So even got in 1.2 miles of serious cardio - was dripping sweat when I got home and did my workout then since I was already warmed up and in a terrible mood, heh.

Reading Turgenev in Russian Lit right now. He's like the Tolkien of Russia - which is no compliment, coming from me. :P

As a general rule of thumb, drink water until your pee has the same colour as lemonade. Anything more transparent than that means you can take a break. Some days you might eat more salt and need more water, other days you might need less because vedgetables and fruits also contain water.

Reduce Body fat from 25% to 19% (7 skin fold)

Yeah, this is what I based my usual goals on is monitoring the color. :) From experience, I know about 6 glasses will get me to "lemonade" LOL

This week on Game of Colds

Monday and Tuesday...total losses as I laid around feeling like shite.

3-4-2015

Worked out, leg day and went easy on myself and LO I can walk today so I must've done something right in spite of the fact that it was definitely no walk in the park. Feeling a bit worse for wear today, so it may have been too soon but I was just so antsy.

A on food - go me!

B on water.

Very stressed about finding out whether my department can provide the summer funding for the program I was accepted into. If not, it will be pretty damn difficult for me to go. If so, almost all my problems will be solved at the stroke of a pen. Here's pulling...

Oof, the cold happened and then it was dead week, and next week is finals. I always forget about how these things impact my ability to do a challenge.

Worst day. Found out that my school won't help to pay for Middlebury. I have to come up with about 3k soon or they'll give my spot away. Scholarship deadlines have pretty much all passed, loans are a bugger and I doubt I'd get one anyone (not that I'm not going to try if I have to) so it's down to begging from my friends and family, none of whom have much money either.

C on food

No workout and don't think I had any water all day, in spite of all the crying. :-\

Middlebury is a college and specifically I was admitted to their summer Russian intensive. It's incredibly competitive and considered by many to be the best domestic summer Russian program in the U.S.

Worked out, feels nice. It has helped clear my head from a lot of the stuff that's been going on. I think this is probably the thing that really gets in my way - I get too deeply into my head and working out starts to feel secondary when it really needs to be primary. Have a B in food today, a Thin Mints before breakfast, those darn Girl Scouts. :tongue:Water's going well, already had 4 and probably gonna have an easy A.

Most exciting workout EVAR! :D

Yesterday I did 10 diamond or close-grip push-ups AND 10 normal stance push-ups with my feet elevated on a chair. A few months ago I could not do better than holding a plank pose for about 10 seconds in these positions and now I can do PUSH-UPS! :D :D :D Glowing. I'm glowing! How could I not be? I'm so thrilled!

All week been AWESOME with food except for Wednesday when I had sushi (somuchriceyum) but I had planned for that so thus the goodness.

Worked out Wednesday and today, planning another one tomorrow. Today also included a 6-ish round-trip hike with a nice long stop at some natural hot springs in the middle for a really fun soak. :D Actually felt confident enough to follow the example of some others and go in naked, and surprisingly didn't feel shy or self-conscious at all. I guess that's what getting into shape does for you? I thought I wouldn't feel confident lie that until I was closer to my goals, but APPARENTLY the abilities I've gained have gone to my ego. ;)

Staying hydrated has been my only weak spot, but not too bad since we've been eating out some and I tend to be a compulsive water-drinker in restaurants. (Except at sushi, where I tried to save every last bit of stomach space for fish and rice!)
