KiwiChick returns - The limber zen bulletproof tortoise

KiwiChick

Recommended Posts

Im back after having a baby - and Im determined to return to running, but this time be bulletproof! eg injury free.

This means going slow, regaining lost strength and keeping the zen and yoga going I found in pregnancy.

Hatchling is now 5 weeks old and Im slowly escaping the post baby blues haze and looking for ways to improve my mental and physical health.  Running makes me happy therefore I shall run (ok shuffle/jog).

About me: I live on a small sail boat in toasty mexico, new mum, prone to over doing things.

Big aim - return sensibly to running without injury.

Long term Im thinking of resuming my old pace <25 min 5 km, much longer term <45 min 10km which has always been on my wish list.  But these are a long way off.  First re-learn to run. Dreaming never hurt though.

Goals

1) Be the tortoise not the hare

I shall return slowly to running 2 times a week going slow and easy. Increasing my time spent running as my body allows. A 2, B 1, C 0

2) Be Limber

Yoga or stretching 2 x a week.  A 2, B 1, C 0

3) Be Zen

Mediation 3 x a week (honestly everyday is ideal as I was into the habit of this but being realistic) A 3, B 2, C 1

4) Be Bulletproof

Strength training such as hip stabilization, calf raises, squats etc which enable me to run.  I want to avoid ITB issues and shin splints.  3 x a week A 2, B 1, C 0

Bonus points of awesomesause

Be Mexican

My adorable daughter was born here in mexico and it is really important to me to up my game learning about mexican culture and improve my pathetic spanish.  Aim for either language, culture or history lesson/research 3 days a week.

Be Social

I live in a very small space (boat is 37 feet) and I have a tendency to hide away from the world.  I will put effort in once a week to either meet up with friends, mum group, skype date etc.

Things I shall not do!

Stress my body - I do not want what precious milk I have to dry up.

Criticize my post baby body - as Mr Kiwi so sweetly reminded me this week my health and the health of hatchling is far more important than how I look.

Eat street tacos everyday - this does not count as learning about mexican culture.  I shall put effort into improving my diet for optimal health

Feel guilty ever.  So much new mother guilt in the past month, this shall not creep back into my life.

Day zero Sunday 22 Feb - Today I did my first run in at least six months.  I have a family member in town so was able to leave hatchling with her.  It is still crazy hot here and of course I went early afternoon.  Walked 5 mins, jogged 5, stretched 10, jogged 10, walked 10.  My inner knees are a bit achy but apart from that felt really good.  kinda been buzzed since and this encouraged me to eat healthy.

Thanks!

Day 1: Rest day after yesterdays jog.  My inner knee is a bit tender on my left leg, i think I need to be extra careful because of relaxin hormone so need to keep an eye on that.

I managed some mediation (54321 relax audio) this morning.

Met up with a new group of mums this avo, I really didnt want to go and I was balling my eyes out on the couch but Mr Kiwi made me a cup of tea which cheered me up so I went (but was 30 mins late).  Pleased I went, they were lovely and it was great to get some fresh air.  They spent about 70% of the time speaking in spanish and I was surprised how much I could understand although I lack the vocabulary to converse back. Might count this towards spanish.

I ate well today - but did have street tacos for tea (haha I forgot that was on the list!) but it came with beans, rice, big pile of onion so as far as tacos go were on the good side.  I even said no to icecream when someone offered to buy me one.

No yoga - plan on that tomorrow.

Definitely counts toward Spanish goal. Immersion is a great tool for learning languages.

I too am really happy you went to the group. New mums really need each other to keep from feeling alone, inadequate, and isolated from 'the rest' of life. When do you think you can take the baby out on a run with you? Do you have a baby sling or something? Maybe start with walks with her. Hang out in town say hi to strangers and introduce the bundle of joy to her surroundings. Her town.

Nice work with the ice cream! Way to say No Way!

Oh and if it isn't obvious, I am so happy that you, the baby, and the family are well. Happy Motherhood, kiwichick. You'll be a good mom, because you're being good to yourself and that it an awesome role modelling thing for little tykes.

good luck with the hormone roller coaster, I was only a spectator, but it is a rough ride.  Stick to your plan, it sounds pretty solid.  Also, if you are on a boat, why not swim?  Easier on the body for off days.   Hmmmn, tacos.

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.

Hey there, kiwi mum. How's that knee bouncing back after its punishment? And how's the hatchling?

If you want to expand your vocab a but and get some practice speaking it might help to think of some hacks like how you can cope with getting stuck. Like if you prepare some useful phrases like "como se dice....?" (which iirc is the Spanish equivalent of "how do you say....?") then when you don't know a word (often in my case) you can say that and point at the thing or mime an action and it becomes a livelier conversation. It's more fun and more effective than having a tiny dictionary in your back pocket.

Hola!

Been super busy with family in town.

Week 1 Round up - not as going to plan I as had hoped.  But Im learning that with a baby planning is much more difficult and everything takes much longer to do.

My knee was troublesome for most of the week so I stuck to walking, turns out when Im relaxing I twist my knee into a funny position putting pressure on the interior ligaments which I have probably been doing for months now not realising which is the source of my problem I think.  I am trying hard not to do this (I even caught my self doing it while sitting at my computer desk now!).

1) Be the tortoise not the hare

C = 0 (sunday before challenge was a trial, kinda counts) but no biggy as the aim here is to prevent injury and get back into things slowly.  If I have to work on walking first this is a win for me not going all out and making things worse.

2) Be Limber

A = 2 I did two pretty pathetic strecth sessions - one was in the pool at my mums meet up on saturday which was good.  The other was a quick in boat stretch before bed one night as I was in pain.  I need to stretch before I am in pain - need to up my game here.

3) Be Zen

A = 3 Im used to doing more so this seems weird earning an A grade, Oh iphone apps I love you.  I also upgraded the app I fall asleep to (oriental relaxing noises) which has helped wean me off my earplug addiction (cant have those with a baby).

4) Be Bulletproof

B = 1 I did some hip work and calf raises, not really a full work out but an introduction.  Building up slowly.  oh and I also successfully attempted a pull up! Whoop Whoop.  my abs still haven't fully healed after splitting during pregnancy so Im not going to do more until I have repaired and strengthened my core.

Be Mexican

2 x spanish.  No proper lessons or study though

mums group chat and I got a CD of spanish music for babies and kids so Im listening and googling lyrics so I can sing some songs in spanish.  This week I want to read a news paper and watch a disney film in spanish too.

Be Social

2 x different mums n bubs groups.

Have family over.

Skyped my mum and dad.

Things I shall not do!

Stress my body - maybe a few too many late nights but not enough exercise yet to be even close.

Criticize my post baby body - yup I did but Im working on it.  This weeks aim is not to criticize myself in photos.

Eat street tacos everyday - I wish I hadnt put this down here! since we have visitors we ate out lots (cheaper faster and easier than cooking) and I had tacos 4 or 5 nights this week.  OMG.

Feel guilty ever - about that….

In other news!

I had a check up with doctor and I have lost 12 kg since birth so am the same weight as I was on my first pregnancy appointment (6w gestation) but my body composition is way different than before!

I am planning on entering a triathlon in August so pleased to have some thing to train for :)  Its a nice baby intro tri of 500 yard swim, 6 mile bike and 2 mile run.  If only I knew what the heck a mile and a yard was.

the mexicans here LOVE babies and always come up to me for baby chats which is great as Im too shy to start talking myself.

I have a sling wrap thingy which is awesome, it soothes her so well.  I take her walking everyday in it, but my shoulders are very tense because of it.  Wont be running with that but good resistance for walking, no stroller as no room on boat.

Currently we have a red tide (ewwwww) and are in a marina so I cant just jump into the ocean like I used to be able to do.  But We will be back at anchor soon so plan on getting in the ocean more.  Also got my triathlon to think about so swimming is in my future for sure.

cómo se dice is my total 'go to' phrase - I need to get a pocket note book to write the words I learn down though as baby brain means I keep forgetting!

Also "pode falar mais devagar" which I think in Spanish would be - what? "habla más lento por favor"? Hm, that doesn't seem right. "can you speak more slowly please" anyway. It's another useful one to buy yourself some breathing space.

Congrats on that weight loss. That was fast! The body composition will come back, no worries.

Excited for your tri! I had to figure out the mile:km conversion when I moved to Japan. I think your race is a 457m swim (awkward number, right? maybe they'll round to 450), 9.7K bike (10K?) and 3.2K race. You're right; it sounds like a great one to ease back in with.

Still alive, the tortoise hasnt gone anywhere (no running)

limber - not really

bulletproof - hell no I ache, my ITB is playing up even though I havent done anything

Zen - semi

I have decided not to run until I done some proper yoga sessions and hip stabilization or else I will get my self oucher.

I have been sick this week with a tummy bug thanks to the wee munchkin who had it first, so I have not been eating properly since and lost way too much weight this week (now below pre baby weight, uggg im getting skinny fat shudder, need to eat more to avoid this and start strength training before I lose more muscle).

Family gone now, Mr Kiwi away for the week so its just hatchling and I on the boat.  She has not been sleeping at all during the day so not much in any aspect of my life getting done.  Hopefully things improve so I can precook some healthy food, get a little yoga in and enjoy a cup of tea.

hope everyone elses challenges going well - sorry for the lack of interaction, but you know - hatchling.

Yeah, hatchling is definitely a schedule changer. Sorry about the creeping crud. Stomach sick is blucky sick. Hate it.

My challenge is going half-way decently. I'm working on controlling (?) a newly freed emotion. Anger. It's very strange to have it out in the open like everyday now. Very disturbing, but I need to get it out and stop restraining it. It's been in the dark long enough (easily 40 years).

Giving yourself time to recover from hatching is likely pretty frustrating. Do your best to be compassionate with yourself. You just worked on a very important 9 month project - mostly by yourself. You are suppose to be tired and drained. Your torso muscles are still trying to tighten back up after birth. I'd say yoga would be the best choice, but you know yourself best... obviously! hehehe

Good luck! Have a nice weekend with the hatchling.
