Barfly
The last couple of weeks have not gone well. I took a week off of working out, but kept eating fairly clean, to prep for a fitness test hike last Saturday (8 miles, 1000' elevation gain, in full gear, in under 3 hours). I slept well, ate well, hydrated, I was ready. Well, except for the scratchy throat that started Friday night. After the mob at the start began spreading out, I started making progress (narrow trail without many places to pass), catching and passing some of the individuals and groups ahead of me, finally reaching the summit. The trail on the back half was not so steep, so I started to jog down, running most of the last 3 or 4 miles. The last half mile or so was on pavement, and a steep climb. I had worked my way up to mid-pack and was just behind a couple of really fast hikers, with another just behind me, when my quads started complaining. They felt right on the verge of cramping up. And then I got the worst charley horse I've ever felt in my calf - made me forget all about my burning quads. I went down hard. With a quarter mile to go...I dug my thumbs into the knot as hard as I could. In a couple of minutes it started to ease; I could feel the different muscle fibers firing and relaxing. It stopped enough for me to get back on my feet and hobble to the finish line. For the next few days my calf and quads were tender to the touch, my hips felt like there was sand in the joints, my shoulders ached where the straps of my pack bounced on them. I pushed the old corpse too hard. I'm getting too old for this shit...But, I killed it: 2:17:01. The scratchy throat turned into a cold (a terrible, terrible man cold) that turned into bronchitis. It feels like I'm going to start getting well soon, though. Anyway, I’m sitting out this challenge - again - because besides this inauspicious introduction, I’ve also got a lot going on. I’m training and eating for a couple of upcoming events and switching back and forth between regimens and taking taper and rest weeks here and there and I’m not really sure how I would grade it. Ok, that’s not entirely true; I just don’t want to mess with grading it. So, this will be a kind of non-challenge challenge. I'll post what I'm doing and eating. Might be good for a few laughs, anyway. I’m finishing up this schedule for the next couple of weeks: Tues, Thurs, Sat - weightsWed - short runSun - long run then I'll start this: Tues, Thurs, Sun - weightsWed, Fri - runTues or Thurs - HIITSun - distance run for a few more weeks. Barring unforeseen and foreseen events, that is. I'm currently eating at a caloric deficit, I'll soon start working back up to my TDEE of 2500 cal. (Just ignore the postings about brownies and beer). So, yeah... 4 Quote The past is only smoke in a dream. Lvl 6 Ranger Berzerker STR 9 DEX 4 STA 9 CON 8 WIS 2 CHA 8 Barfly ain't even tryin'... Link to comment

Barfly
Epic week of epicness is epic! so far. Monday - usually a rest day, but I have a conflict this week - hit the weight room, aka garage, for an epic session. I went up in # or reps for every exercise. Tuesday - epic run of 4 miles @10:37 each. Best. Time. Ever. Even though Monday DOMS were hitting hard (Deads AND lunges? What was I thinking? Ouch, my... glutes). I guess the best protocol for me to follow is 14 rest days between workouts. Foodwise - on point, lean and clean. A little hungry at times, though. A week from Monday I start adding calories (heading up to my TDEE of 2500 over 6 weeks), so that will help.I do very well if I pack some food and get out of the house; sitting around weekends is tough with all the good eats available. I don't know what I'm going to do when I retire... Wednesday - today - will be my rest day, although I have a rather distasteful task to perform tonight. One of the better results I'm hoping for: there will be no gunfire. srsly 3 Quote The past is only smoke in a dream. Barfly
Wednesday went well, and quickly; we had enough manpower in place to cover any contingency and the subject(s) didn't put up much of a fight. And I got home relatively early. Thursday - another epic night at the gym. More #, more reps. Today - Friday - rest day. I dunno, there's something about waking up and knowing that not only is it Friday, but also that there is nothing on my plate workoutwise. And no after work assignments. Maybe I'll use all this free time to go for a run, or workout or something...Now if it was also a payday, and the beginning of a 3 day weekend... man... Food - kinda on point - Wednesday night I went out with the guys and had a meatball sandwich and chips, washed down with a big beer. Still, I stayed below 2000 cal. Back to eating clean Thursday and Friday (so far; I might have a beer with dinner because, after all, it's almost my free-eating day. Then maybe some dessert. Let's see, if I count my free-eating day from 1800 tonight to 1800 tomorrow...). Here's what I do with weights, btw: Each workout is only 4 exercises. Using a 10RM weight, I do as many reps in 5 sets as I can. I only rest long enough to set the weights down, record the number on the whiteboard, and then go pick them up again. If I can get 30 reps total (and I'm not struggling with rep 10 set 1) I increase the weight for the next session. It takes 3-4 minutes per exercise, then a couple of minutes rest, so I'm done in 20-25 minutes. It's pretty intense, I have trouble writing the numbers for the last set or two of each one and I'm gassed by the end of the workout. Wobbly. Arms and legs trembling. So cool. 3 Quote The past is only smoke in a dream. Lvl 6 Ranger Berzerker STR 9 DEX 4 STA 9 CON 8 WIS 2 CHA 8 Barfly ain't even tryin'... Link to comment

Barfly
Monday - rest day - I was going to lift today because of schedule conflicts later this week, but thought I'd better not try 2 days in a row. Had a beer instead. Tuesday - schedule conflict #1; board meeting. Did I tell you I was elected to the Search and Rescue board? Yeah. My sole qualification was "insufficient reluctance". Meeting went 'til 8. Had a big bowl of cinnamon toast crunch for dinner. Wednesday - running - I did 6 miles @10:39. I thought it was going to be slower, but I was still feeling the adrenaline from 2 near-misses driving home: Some jackass didn't want to wait to make a right turn in front of me, he was behind a truck-trailer rig and he went around him using the shoulder as a right turn lane and then did the same thing in front of me using the shoulder as a merging lane. Pulled in front of me going 40 (I was doing 70ish). On a curve. ON THE PHONE!!! Looked at me as I passed like "where did you come from?".Then on the river road, coming around a blind curve, there was a tractor coming the wrong way in my lane! Luckily he was only going about 20 mph, because he didn't come into view until I was maybe 30 yards from him. He also gave me a look like "what are you doing in my lane?". Still pissed after my run, so I had a couple glasses of cheap wine with instead of dinner. So, on my way out the gate I talked with my neighbor (he was coming in as I was going out, he held the gate open for me and I didn't realize he was talking to me until I looked up to see why he was still holding the gate - I had Seether CRANKED on my ipod) and he started asking me a lot of questions about my distances and times, my weekly schedule, stuff like that. Then he told me he wanted to quit smoking and needed to lose 30#, so I gave him my number and told him I'd start him off easy and to come on out. (If he can do a mile of easy intervals, that would be a good warm-up for me. We'll see.) I thought that was pretty cool. Thursday - today - later - weights. I really have to get out there and get it done; I'm going out of town for the weekend and probs won't have the opportunity for a workout either day. Might be able to sneak in a quick one Friday before dinner guests show up, though... Edit: didn't Thursday, and probably won't tonight, either :-| 2 Quote The past is only smoke in a dream.
