Tinessael's Challenge...Out in the Wildernes

Tinessael

Recommended Posts

Hey!

After a long pause of Nerdfitness challenges, I am back! And first time in Rangers, before I used to hang around adventurers and scouts...but since I never can choose between strength and endurance training, it maybe that I may be right here, to train in ranks of Rangers...

So, I am 23 years old, weigh 152 pounds at 5"2, and Bodyfat of around 36%. My goal is to...have it all, but to reach a better version of myself - who is stronger, faster and hopefully as a result of that leaner. I sort of want to have it all, yesterday, and that is my largest problem - I already had a exhaustion fracture in my foot for example.

I've joined the nerdfitness academy and am learning to go slow.

Fitness goal 1: Sign up, pay and attend a barbell weightlifting class. I am terrified and in my horror dreams I will be the only one there under 6 foot und under 200 lbs and the only female and the only with bodyfat percentage > 10. But I will still go. I will try to get a place in archery class - something I've been wanting to do the entire 5 years I am at this university, and now during my last semester, i have to do it. But it only  has 8 spots, so it is really difficult to get a place. Sign up for a climbing course - I am also terrified and keep thinking I am too weak to do it, but I will sign up for a course that starts on 10th of June so it will sort of be a goal to fit up until then. And attend a ballet course.

This all will give me 5 points.

Fitness goal 2: Do generally twice a week strength training and twice a week endurance training (running, swimming, hiking uphill, bicycling) and yoga on rest days. I have a run on May the 3rd (Wings for Life), I am aiming for 10K but since I haven't been training much, it might just stay at around 6-7K.  So my perfect plan would be:

Monday: Yoga

Tuesday: Barbell & Archery classes.
Wednesday: Yoga
Thursday: Ballet
Friday: Endurance training
Saturday: Bodyweight training.
Sunday: Endurance training

I will get a point for each day I filled my plan. :) 36 points= 100%, for 2 Points to Strength and 1 to Stamina and 1 to Dexterity.

Diet goal: I need to change my mindset and treat my diet goal with respect it deserves. I am a paleo fan and am pretty good at having protein& veggies at each meal and am slowly reducing my dairy intake... but I can't say no to cake, chocolate, sweets, tortilla wraps and chips AND usually eat it in not so small amount. So, I will get a point for each day I didn't have any of them. To reduce my cravings I have upped my calories to 1750 and am allowing myself as much fruit as I want.

Similary to fitness goal 2, this will give me 5 points, all of them to Constitution.

Life goal: I am writing my thesis right now, so my goal is to write every day something new down. At least a word. 1 Point to Wisdom if I pull it through successfully.

I saw that Wings for Life run. It sounds fun; too bad the nearest one to me is about a 12-hour drive :)

I struggle with wanting to have everything yesterday as well. I probably do too much as it is, but at least I can avoid adding any more strength/cardio work in.

The Rangers seem good for you, since you don't have any particular focus between strength and endurance. And you do both weights and bodyweight exercise; you're definitely a jack of all trades!

Don't be nervous about the weightlifting class!! Barbells are what made me realize I didn't have to be good at sports to enjoy being active. I LOVE lifting. And I'm 5'3" for what it's worth. So even if you are the only one in your class under 6', go out there and represent for all of the other lady lifters out there :)

Also, good luck with your thesis. What are you writing it on?

This made me smile, because I meet all of those criteria, except female (5'10, 185#, mid-teens or so BF%), and I have a very close relationship with my barbell.

Bottom line, everyone had to start somewhere. No one shows up to a gym for the first time with a 400# squat. Having the guts to get started is half of the battle. Sticking with it is the other half.

hey, yay, people in my thread!
Salivanth that's a shame! it is about an hour of trainride from me, and I took part last time and really liked the atmosphere. (And the free red bull..won't lie about it ^^) I have my phases where I give everything, and then don'd do anything for weeks, and I am just trying to balance it out, because I usually lose all of the progress I've done.
Slates  I just really hope I will get a place. The course only has 8 places and until now has been booked in a couple of hours, but the online registration is early on Sunday and I plan to be there from the start.

Dark raider - I love archery... I have a wooden bow and some arrows at my parents' and practiced on my own, but it's been years.
Snowfox, I will get out there and do my best ^^. I think I will like it...I think actually that crossfit is something that is perfect for me, but I can't allow it financially to sign up in the box here. No way. My thesis is on lung cell physiology! The experiments are ready, and now I "just" have to write it all together, it's a bit difficult with school classes at the same time.
Separatist, I...did needed to hear that. Since I probably can't even lift the bar right now.  :nevreness:

So, I slowly started with the schedule I posted (with some changes due to the weather ^^). My thesis has 4791 words and is beginning to look sciency and stuff. ^^ Food is still a challenge...there is definitely the effect of "eating everything while I still can" until Monday, and I just am trying to get over that mentality but it is difficult.

This, I relate to completely. I actually do most of my CrossFit workouts on my own, often at home. I used my tax return last year to invest in a nice barbell and some bumper plates. If you just add a pull-up bar that can hang in your doorway, you can do a lot of the CrossFit workouts at home.

I hear you - I've been away from crossfit for about a year due to money and moving. Hoping to make room in my budget shortly, because I love it! It's okay if you can't lift the bar yet - I couldn't either when I started. I still consider myself a beginner, but I can deadlift more than I weigh and squat my own weight now, thanks to both garage and box crossfit workouts. Hang in there - weightlifting, more than anything, makes me feel fierce. You'll get there too! :D

This is totally true! However, I would strongly recommend getting comfortable in your class first. Having proper form and being comfortable around the bar is absolutely essential before you start tackling these on your own. Safety first!!

Also, Why not?, the goals in your signature are amazing. Are you close to some of those? Because damn. :D

That would be a good idea, though I confess, the only coaching I ever really had was the CrossFit Level 1 course. Other than that, when I didn't know what a movement was, I looked at Youtube for guidance. Probably not the best approach for most people though...I've probably been fortunate.

I'm 35# away on the squat, 15# away on the snatch, and 5# away on the deadlift. I think I'm close with the row as well, though I haven't done a 1k in quite a while. As for the gymnastic goals...I'm nowhere remotely near them haha

Oh, I meant Tinessael should stick with the class before lifting solo if she hasn't had any prior barbell experience. :)

My CFL1 was my first time ever actually being in a crossfit box, funnily enough - I'd been doing WODs in my garage, but with friends who had lifting experience and could help there at least. Once you have some comfort with the bar/form, yeah, I'm totally with you! Again Faster has awesome coaching videos. :D

You are a BEAST. I've been at a 195# deadlift for ages (I'm 5'3" and 125#), I really want to break 200 and then go for 2x bodyweight at 250. Still can't do a snatch properly either. You are an inspiration, lady!!

*Ahem* I couldn't help but notice that you are referring to me as "lady". I am sorry to disappoint, but I am, in fact, 100% male haha

What are you doing to train deadlift?

As far as snatches go, I watched a video (and not a great training one, at that) on snatching, then tried it. It was relatively embarrassing. It took a while and a lot of power snatches, but eventually my body figured out the mechanics of the snatch. To an extent, anyway. I still have a ways to go.

Duhhhh. My bad. :) I haven't been doing much lifting lately unfortunately - living in a tent in the desert means there aren't many suitably heavy things to pick up. Other than actually deadlifting, is there anything you'd recommend?

See, Tinessael - you'll become a lifting addict in no time :) Seriously. Barbell "addiction" is a thing. A healthy, glorious thing. :)

Funny you should say that, I'm about to go live in a tent in the desert, but only for a little over a week.

I like to go heavy on deadlifts (5x1, 5x3, or 5x5) once a week. I basically go as heavy as I can without failing. I also might do a WOD involving lighter deadlifts at higher reps during that week as well. Then I'll also have other movements that work the same muscle groups in different ways. For deadlift, you're obviously looking at a great deal of posterior chain, so a lot of hamstrings and lower back. Olympic lifts, squats, and even sprints and hip extensions work those (though for deadlift performance, oly lifting is going to have a greater benefit than 100m repeats). I use the same principles for my other power lifts as well.

Tinessael, hope I'm not hijacking your thread :nightmare:

MIMIMIMI! I am on the waiting list for archery  :numbness: I stood up before 7 and I refreshed the form like at exactly 7:00 and I am now the first on the waiting list. -.- I am sooooo hoping that I still get in and am seriously cursing myself for not doing it in previous years. But at least I am the first one in waiting list (There are 14 people behind me before they closed the waiting list). I mean this is harder that getting tickets for Wacken -.-

But I did get the climbing course and the barbell class. And I got my sleep rhytmus set for tomorrow - I had two weeks off from classes and got into a rhythm of going to bed at 2 and waking at 11 ^^ And right now I am just trying to stay awake with green tea and music because it is too early for me.

In other news, my passion planner finally came (sent it to my parents because I was travelling, my mum misspelled my address, so after four weeks in the post it got send back to her..etc. But now I have it and I am filling it out right now!

And the same way I got tickets for Wacken, I got off the waiting list!!! *bounces happily around*. Got an email tonight. Now th enext quest is to actually pay for the courses. It was the failing point a couple of times, because they are only open a couple of times. But I put it in my planner and so it should work out tomorrow.

Also, I went hiking today as endurance training, 35 minutes of climbing up a rather steep hill and 20 minutes to get back down again. That and some cycling and my legs are pretty much done.

Haha it's all good, but I imagine my lifts are somewhat less impressive now ;)

So, now the 6 week challenge has officially started...happy six week challenge everybody!

Yesterday I went one step closer to my goals and actually paid for the courses. The three classes were pretty expensive all together, but oh well. You get that for procrastinating for 5 years until you take all the cool classes at the same time. Well, I hope they are cool.

Yesterday I did yoga, but I...(don't want to use vocabulary like failed, because I think it just promotes unhealthy relationship with food), but I forgot about the challenge and had a cookie and gummy bears and a tortilla for a snack, so erm....I need to remember that my main goal is actually nutritition here.

But I did yoga and went for a walk to get my 10 000 steps in, so yeah!

I did that in February! It was so awesome! (4 deserts for altogether of 2 weeks). Where are you going?

Messing up once on nutrition is nothing to beat yourself up over. It's not like it caused you to suffer an injury or anything else that will hamper you long term, so it's easy enough to make up for it the next day. Today is a new day!

I'm headed to Kuwait for a very brief time, actually. The tent won't be a tent in the traditional sense...more like a really modern military-type tent.

Ok, then something else entirely ^^

Today I resisted all gummybears and had only one small cookie, so I will award myself a half-point, because I rocked the nutrition otherwise. And I did my bodyweight routine. And right now I am writing my thesis after having succesfully studied for an exam on friday.

When do your Archery classes actually start?

Always wanted to try archery but always found excuses not to, time, money ect.

And definitely don't be scared of weightlifting.I'm 5'2" and 125lbs. When I first started they did have lighter 15lb barbells for us to use, but I have fully graduated to the 45lb bar in the comfort of my garage. I still am not as strong as I'd like to be, but it's nice to know I can at least use a regular bar now.....

My archery classes start on Tuesday...together with the barbell class. I have 2 hours of time inbetween, which is a bit uncomfortable but oh well.

Yesterday I went running, 4 miles in 1 hour. But I don't know why, but my intestines decided to rebel, so that one hour is with 3 longer bathroom breaks. -.- No idea why. Nutritionwise i wasn't perfect, but I didn't eat anything that bad. :/ So probably just runner's diarrhea. Yay.

I am still totally in the groove from the ballet class ^^

Soooo...*drumroll*

*squeeeeeeee*

First, I went to archery class and I really loved it. The first time we had almost only theory. We are a small group of 8 people, so we had a introduction, and then we learned what a recurved bow is, what parts it has, then we spent a while trying to assembly it and finding all the protection stuff and safety so we only got to shoot three arrows at the end but it is really exciting and well taught.

Mental note to self: Do not wear yoga pants to archery - because we have to hang the quiver over the pants, and well...my yoga pants don't hold it under it all that well ^^ I almost lost them a couple of times.

And then and then and then and then...I went to the barbell class and it was so awesome and I loved it so so so much! There were lots of women (40%?), most of them petite, but returners, so they rocked everything. The coach is great and it is a great atmosphere. We practised with plastic sticks and then with the bar (there was also the 7 kg bar, which I used) for squats, presses, deadlifts and clean-and-jerks. For deadlifts I also could put 5 kg on the bar, so I did them with 12 kg. And I found it so awesome, I had so much fun and am still ( as you may have noticed) slightly hyper.

Totally going back!
