DrFeelgood III: The Defattening

Sounds like a delicious and thoughtful Mother's Day gift to your wife :)  I can never expect that from my boyfriend in the future, because 1) he knows nothing about cooking and 2) I love cooking and am happy to do all of it, so he has no motivation to learn.  I bet the fact that you know your way around the kitchen has helped a lot in your weightloss journey!

W5D1 - I wasn't quite ready to get back on track last night, so I blew off bedtime to catch up on my shows.  ;)  As of this morning, though, I'm back on the horse and moving ahead.

Workout was good.  I caught up on my barbell squats from Friday (I pushed them off to make time for the golf scramble) to finish up the third 5/3/1 cycle.  The fourth cycle is a deload cycle, and that starts on Wednesday.  I'll be able to complete the whole program before heading out on vacation.  Warmup was the same BBWW circuit x 3 and then after lifting I did the Beginner Shrimp Squats again followed by Leg-Lift Planks (30 seconds per side, absolutely brutal).  I took a good long while to stretch at the end since I spent the whole weekend tight and sore.  I'm feeling much better.

Eating is on track with the new-old plan.  I've plugged in calorie targets for the rest of the challenge, and I'm not going to do any more tweaking.  With a little luck and discipline this should be sufficient to get me under 200 lbs by the end of the challenge.  I'm still tracking carbs, but I just don't care anymore; and I won't be going out of my way to impose arbitrary limits on any of my macros.  As long as I hit my daily target, I'll be happy.  My energy levels are improving slowly even if my mood is lagging a bit behind the calorie curve.  I've pretty much come full circle back to where I was all through the second challenge.  I shouldn't have tried to fix what wasn't broke, but at least I managed to keep breaking it until it fixed itself. :D

It's getting a little tougher to mentally focus on the rest of this challenge.  I've already finished the heaviest part of my lifting program.  I'm really looking forward to taking a break from calorie restriction while on vacation, and I'm satisfied enough with my appearance that I won't be self-conscious around the pool and at the beach (after a salon appointment at our first stop, that is).  And I'm already excited to come back in the next challenge with adjusted priorities and new and improved eating and exercising plans.  In the meantime I'm going to have to concentrate on not getting ahead of myself.

I think she enjoyed it.  I love to cook, a hobby which comes with plenty of ups and downs.  When I'm undisciplined with my eating, knowing how to prepare good food can get me in to a lot of trouble. ;)

But so far this year I've been extremely disciplined; and it has been of unquestionable benefit to be able to make tasty eats that help me accomplish my fitness goals.

Still, since we're a single-income family MrsFeelgood handles most of the routine food prep, and she's very good in her own right.  I just happen to be a little bit better. B)

W5D2 - all goals met.  Gym day off with good weather meant more mowing of the lawn.  This time of year it grows so fast I've got to cut it at almost every break in the weather.  June can't get here too soon.

I'm slowly recovering my energy levels from eating up again.  1800 a day sure seems like a lot of food--it will be interesting to see how I do when I start eating at maintenance in the inter-challenge weeks.  I couldn't help myself earlier today, and I'm already getting started on a new spreadsheet for the next challenge--eating is going to go up by a fair bit. :D

Also, my legs absolutely hate me after yesterday's leg-lift planks.  I don't think I've ever exercised that particular muscle before, and it's being very vocal with its displeasure.

W5D3 - slightly late to bed, slightly over on carbs, nailed workout and calories.  I'm still committed to finishing this challenge, and I'm going to try to sneak in that final workout when we arrive at our first vacation stop.

Bonus cardio with more yardwork today after the gym.  Got my eldest son to take a lesson in running the push mower, and he seemed to enjoy it.  That'll help cut my workload down for the rest of the summer if he can manage the ditches.

As we enter the home-stretch, I'm compelled to revisit my To-Done List.  The TV stand isn't going to happen thanks to my stupid car's alternator, and the weather just hasn't cooperated with my deck.  I writing both of those off.  I will get a chance to condition my furniture this weekend, though, so I'll do the recliner and the sofa to balance out the forces.

On the flip side of the coin I finally managed to get some of the documentation submitted for my licensure, which was a side quest in my first challenges that I failed miserably.  It's been a productive year so far, but I'm ready for a break. :)

I'm just adding and updating screenshots of my *.odf (Open Office) spreadsheets.  I use Snipping Tool and then upload JPGs to Imgur for hosting.

When I have some downtime I intend to find a more direct approach.  I'm still not completely familiar with the special codes here.

I just searched Imgur and if I understand it correctly, it is a web site you can upload things to.  Do you know why we can't just paste spreadsheets directly into the area where we are typing?  I'm not that savvy w/ this stuff.

Hosting BBB embeddable spreadsheets will probably happen some day, but for now it would probably require too much bandwidth and storage.  I'm not completely up to speed with current tech either.

W5D4 - Not even close on bedtime (I was watching B.U.F.F. Dudes on youtube :D ) and slightly over on carbs again--thanks to a long workday and a stocked candy dish.  Fortunately I stuck to the dark chocolate and things with almonds in them.  Also fortunately, I over-counted my dinner yesterday and discovered it at lunch today.  I got to make up the extra calories, though I would have probably preferred another taco instead of 150 calories of chocolate.

I've tried to resist getting back on the scale before Sunday's check-in, but this morning my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to do a little mid-week progress check.  It said 200.0 lbs--alright, we're back on course!  If I cross all of my fingers and toes and do jump squats in the rain with dirty socks on backwards, I bet it will read under 2 bills for Sunday morning. ;)

I'll be more relieved than happy if that comes about.  Deftona, does Numfar have a Dance of Consolation?

W5D5 - slightly late to bed, but I got a great night's sleep anyway and still made it to work on time.

Workout was great.  This deload week is kinda nice, and I made more progress on the bodyweight stuff.  After all the strength training, I took some time to trial-run my new cardio plan that I'm going to be implementing in the next challenge--that also resulted in the first time I've touched the treadmill since the last challenge. :D  I think walking after lifting should help me melt off these last twenty-or-so pounds.  I actually have no idea what my weight might get down to, but I'm going for leanness anyway so weight will just stop whenever it's finished.  I may just eschew losing the last of the fat and start trying to put on more muscle--for all the work I've done I feel like I could have better "gainz" if I was eating more.  I'm on the fence about my eating for the next challenge, and I probably won't actually make a decision until after the wedding.

For today's eating I did pretty good, even though I was significantly over on carbs and I ate most of them early in the day before my workout could help or be helped by them.  Oh well, I was still on point for total calories, and I added a few egg whites to my dinner to help get the protein up.

So while I was at the gym I jumped on the scale before workout with all my gear on, and it read 201.4.  After working out I took off my shirt and shoes and got back on because I DEMAND to see it below 200--lo and behold it said 199.8 lbs!  Even though it's not my official weigh-in I did finally see the scale start with a "1", and as promised I did in fact do the Dance of Joy right there in the locker room.  Gym Buddy about busted a gut, but he didn't take any video.  Y'all are just going to have to be satisfied with the diagram I made to learn the dang thing:

Thanks, deftona.  I needed a way to celebrate and this was completely perfect!

So psyched for Sunday's official check-in.

W5D6 - No bedtime, didn't stay up all that late and still got out of bed at 6:30 am.  No workout, but we did a little more shopping (and a fair bit of walking) today to prepare for the vacation trip.  Productivity stuff: got the kids' bikes maintained up for the coming summer.  Other than that it's been a peaceful day.

Eating was on point, carbs were fine.  I'm feeling good about tomorrow morning's check-in. :)  I'm feeling even better about tomorrow's planned foodstuffs: I'm going to have (part of) a pizza while watching the Blackhawks game, then I'm going to make shrimp scampi with zoodles for dinner.

I've been using the same ol' spreadsheet file for all of my challenges so far (just adding new sheet tabs), and the poor thing has gotten cluttered and slow.  I'll be retiring it after this challenge and starting fresh for the next one.  I spent some time building it today and had way more fun than spreadsheets really ought to be. :D

Custom Medal by Daughter Feelgood

That's three days in a row, and it's confirmed--I'm a Oneder (h/t LadyShello ;) )!  Man, does that ever feel good.  This is my second of three weight-loss milestones.  I'm in the home stretch, now!  Week 5 dropped 2.3 pounds and a surprising number of inches (must've been some bloat last week).  My goals are working for me again, whereas I think I was working against them in the last several weeks.

0gVjm55.jpg

Pic may have a little flex going on. B)

I haven't taken time to really reflect on this challenge yet since I've been a little frantic about making changes and having such wide (relatively, for me) swings in my results.  I'm sure that by the end of this week I'll have begun to unravel the lessons I've learned--certainly 19 hours of road-tripping on Friday will give me at least a little time to do some spring cleaning in my head.  I've had a lot of stuff competing for my attention lately and my mental desktop has gotten cluttered.  It'll be nice (and much needed) to get away and put things in order.

This last week has been steady on.  I did B+ work with all of my fitness goals.  I did A+ work with my actual profession--I wrapped up a huge design project and finished assembling the bid package for contracting.  I have a couple more small things to tidy up this week before heading out on vacation, and then I'll be able to enjoy the trip without anything hanging over my head.

Regarding the next Challenge, I still have some thinking and sorting to do, but I have the framework of a Plan that's really just more of the same K.I.S.S stuff I've been doing:

j3hC7Xm.jpg

And it makes a pretty spreadsheet. :D  The really neat stuff is all behind the scenes with data-collection of my weight-loss results and another cool sheet that's going to use a rolling average of my actual results to establish weekly eating levels.  It's totally automated--all I have to do is enter my weekly weigh-in and--Presto!--I'll have my targets.

But I have to finish out this one, first; so NF Challenge 15-3, Week 6: here we go!  I'll try to keep my dailies going while on the road, and the next (final) Sunday Check-in will be posted from the Duke City--as long as I can find a good wi-fi spot.

W5D7 - bedtime was on time, and I woke up early again today even though we went to church last night.  I'd enjoy a peaceful morning every now and then, but the kids think that hearing my door open gives them permission to start running around and asking for breakfast.

No workout, but good weather meant more lawn care, and since the clippings have been piling up I decided to use the push mower and bag everything.  I made it through about one-third of an acre before I fired up the riding mower to finish out. ;)  Still, I got a bit of sun and bonus cardio, so I'm calling it a double win.  On the down side, I seem to have developed a case of costochondritis (either that, or I'm having the world's slowest, weakest, and most persistent heart attack) from my recent foray in to dips.  Coupled with the tightness in my lower back from a saggy mattress, my core has been having a funless couple of days.  Oh well, there's just two more light days at the gym for this challenge and then I can use some down time to rest and stretch it all out.  I'm determined to enjoy this upcoming trip as mush as I can, since I'll be paying for it for the rest of the year.

Eating was excellent, if a bit over.  Breakfast was my standard 4 eggs over medium with buttered toast (the new-ish low-carb, high-fiber bread) and half of an avocado.  Lunch was a nice BLT on the same toast.  During the hockey game I ate three whole slices of thin-crust pepperoni pizza (livin' large!), and then I made shrimp scampi with zoodles for dinner to share with MrsFeelgood--the kids got hot dogs. :D  I picked up a spiralizer not long ago and this was my first chance to use it--it rocks!  And my shrimp scampi was really tasty even if it was a bit light--next time I'll use an extra tbsp of olive oil in the recipe and include even more zoodles per serving.  Still, at 400 calories for a bowl it packed in 50 whopping grams of protein.  And it was absolutely delicious.  Calories are over for the day, though, because this is my last day to polish off the remaining strawberry ice cream before vacation.  It's a father's duty.
