Iyona (rgbb) - Freggie Superstar!

rgbb

Recommended Posts

Main Quest - Drop 2 dress sizes.  I don’t have a final date for this, because the most important part for me is to build healthy habits before focusing on weight loss.  I can’t gauge how long it’ll take, so I’m happy to keep it as my ultimate goal while monitoring my progress along the way.

Motivation:  Because I want to make the effort to accomplish something meaningful for myself.  Because I want to complete a project from start to finish.  Because I want to feel better.  Because I want fewer stomach-aches and headaches and colds and pains and sleepless nights.  Because I want to discover my mental strength.  Because I want to enjoy the clothes that I used to wear.  Because I want to revel in the process of doing something hard and frustrating so that I can be grateful and persistent when I make it.

Freggie Superstar Quest!

I look at this part as having 6 mini-goals, one per week.  Each week I’ll increase by 1 freggie per day until I’m at 6 freggies per day during week 6.  I’ll allow myself one off-day per week.  I can eat freggies raw, with dressing, cooked, in sauces, in smoothies, etc.  My goal is to set up the habit of how I eat freggies each day so it becomes more natural.

Week 1:  1 freggie per day    (1 CON)

Week 2:  2 freggies per day   (1 CON)

Week 3:  3 freggies per day   (1 CON)

Week 4:  4 freggies per day   (1 CON)

Week 5:  5 freggies per day   (1 CON)

Week 6:  6 freggies per day   (1 CON)

1 Sweet Per Day Quest

Eat no more than one serving of one sweet per day, whatever that might be.  (1 CON, 2 WIS)

If I want to be mindful about eating sweets, I need to have a way to track my progress and monitor myself.  Originally I wasn't going to focus on sweets at all, but I've realized just how easy it is to snack a little here and there throughout the day.  Sometimes I even forget that I've already had a treat.  Once I've had a treat (be in hot chocolate, cookies, soda, candy, etc.) I'll simply add it to my spreadsheet and know that I'm done for the day.  I made more progress during my last challenge than I'd realized, and I don't want that to go to waste by overdoing it on the sweets.

Life Quests

1.  Laundry every Friday.  (2 CHA, 2 WIS)

2.  5 minutes of productive housework each weekday after work.  (1.5 WIS, 2.5 CHA)

I'm setting reminders for both of these in my phone and calendar and placing strategic sticky-notes.  I already sort of do laundry on a weekly basis, but want to get in the very specific habit of doing it on Friday evenings.  For housework, I just can't bring myself to be productive until my house requires intensive weekend cleaning once every few weeks.  What if I just did 5 minutes of something productive every day as soon as I got home from work - like dishes, recycling, vacuuming, cleaning, sorting, etc. - so that I didn't have to save it all for a big job?  I don't even have to finish what I'm doing.  As soon as my 5 minutes are up (with the help of a timer), I'll put it away and keep going the next day.

I know, this seems really simple.  I want to see what it’s like just to focus on one attainable goal for food and one attainable goal for improved lifestyle.

Because this is sort of how my brain works:

add.png

In my first challenge of cutting out sweets and soda as well as adding in freggies I had three weeks of 100% success, then three weeks of about 60% success.  I built some strong, healthy habits but began to feel the stress of life getting in the way.  Based on recommendations from others I began reading more thoroughly about how to build habits and, more importantly, how to sustain them.  One idea kept coming up throughout the articles and research: Start with incredibly small goals that you intend to keep for a lifetime, and begin building them up with small, purposeful steps.  From there I began to think about which action from my first challenge was not only the most impactful, but the most sustainable.

While cutting out sugar and soda was extremely beneficial to my health, energy, and overall well-being, I don’t intend to cut them out completely for the rest of my life.  My main goal is to learn to enjoy treats mindfully, and cutting them out completely doesn’t allow me to do that.  The more impactful action I took was adding freggies into my daily diet.  I felt such immense change in my health, even when I wasn’t faithfully cutting out sweets.  It was something I could do fairly easily and I found out which freggies were my favorite.  Therefore I’ve decided to make this a freggie superstar challenge!

Also, I need to improve my organizational habits, which are extremely difficult for me to maintain.  I read something recently about ADHD and habits, and what stuck with me is that I don't need to set a date to finish a project, I just need to set a date to start it.  Rather than making a goal to clean out the spare room or do all the dishes every night, I just need to commit to a small amount of time each day to do something productive, whether or not I finish.

Wow. 6 freggies seems like a lot per day.

Hm...depends on what you're used to, I guess.  If you're starting with no freggies then definitely yes, it's a lot.  I love love love fruits and veggies, so on a typical day I get at least 6 (usually more).  1-2 servings of veggies at every meal + 1-2 servings of fruit as a snack.

Good luck on your challenge, Iyona!  I was following last challenge in the recruits, so I'm looking forward to seeing how your saga continues :)

I'm excited to see what it's like!  During my last challenge I usually got 2-4 per day.  I felt better the more I had, so my purpose for this challenge is to experience freggie bliss by finding that magic number.  If I get up to the higher numbers and feel it's just too much, I'll adjust the goal.  I also want to help build the habit of when I eat them, so aiming for a higher number will sort of force to find ways of sneaking them in throughout the day.  I'm seeing some freggie smoothies, which I always love, as well as continuing with the breakfast, lunch, and raw snacks.

Alright, I added 2 mini life-quests to my challenge - laundry and housecleaning.  Because yes, I AM that person who still has the fake Christmas tree up in the living room!  One food quest and one lifestyle quest seems manageable to me.

I spent some time this morning reflecting on this past "break" week and how I viewed it in relation to the last 6-week challenge.  I ate sweets and drank soda every day.  What that tells me is that while completely cutting something out works tremendously well for the short-term, it doesn't build in natural habits for the long-term.  I used the "off-week" excuse to eat whatever I wanted, to go back to my "normal" diet.  Mentally it was nice to feel like I could grab a treat if I was craving one, but physically I don't feel nearly as good as I did a few weeks ago.  What I want is to be able to have those moments where I enjoy some junk food but then can stop for the rest of the day and even the rest of the week.  I survived without junk food for three whole weeks and nothing bad happened!  But my small win is that I'm realizing this much more quickly than I have in the past, and am actually using is as fuel for making further change.

The good news is that after taking my new starting stats, I found that I lost weight as well as inches in most areas!  I'm sure most of that was a result of my first three weeks, but it's nice to see that I can have a few off weeks and still make progress.  And that was all from diet - I didn't do any exercise during the challenge (aside from being on my feet most of the day in the classroom).  So . . . I'm pretty pleased!  It's hugely motivating to be mindful of my sweets during the next six weeks.  I'm still not going to revert to completely cutting them out, but I am going to be much more committed to making good choices and being in control of my health.  I took baby steps and made baby changes, but they ARE changes!

Just kidding, changed my challenge again.  After taking my measurements this morning I was so happy with actually making progress that I started to fear I couldn't trust myself to be mindful on my own during this next challenge.  I want those inches and pounds to keep going away, and that's not going to happen if I lose track of my sweet tooth.  So I've updated my goal to stick to one sweet per day.  I don't have to eat a treat if I don't want one, but I'm hoping that allowing myself one per day will teach me how to be mindful with a little indulgence.

Getting ready for Week 1.  I'm looking forward to this new challenge.  I think limiting myself to one sweet per day is actually going to be harder than cutting them out completely.  Once I have one it's super hard not to have more.  But that's good.  That's what I want and need to learn how to do.

For the freggies, I'm just going to see how it goes.  Ideally I'd like to start having some with breakfast every day.  I'm going to be pretty strict about sticking to the "allowances" each week.  In my reading about habits some suggested sticking with the small step and making changes one at a time, even if it seems too easy.  That way the habit can build slowly and more intrinsically.  Even though one per day is taking a step back from my last challenge, if I start with a bunch straight out of the gate I'll probably burn out.  I'll have to keep this in mind for exercise when I start up again this summer.  I always tried to go too fast in the beginning because I felt like I was being too easy on myself.  A few weeks later and I'd give up completely.

Best wishes to all for a happy day 1!

Love you goals for this challenge.  Plan to stop by and see how you are doing.  I am planning on doing freggies again too.  It forced me to rediscover veggies and how to cook them in ways I like.  (I love roasted cauliflower and broccoli).  Looking forward to reading about your adventures. :)

I know what you mean by once you have a taste, it's hard to stop. Good luck on fighting the second serve! Have you tried after having that one treat, cleansing with water? I find it stops my tastebuds from wanting more. On the downside you lose the great aftertaste, especially if it's chocolate.

Great idea!  I agree, the point of eating sweets is to taste them, so I don't want to wash them away immediately :)  But it's something to keep in mind for when I want that second serving later on.

Day 1 went well!  I had a second treat in the afternoon - a soda.  At the end of the day I was so tired I almost couldn't keep my eyes open.  I just wanted to put my head on the table and take a nap.  I was meeting a friend right after work and just couldn't fathom making it through without some extra caffeine, so I got a soda on the way home.  I'm tired all the time, but I'm rarely THAT tired.  I later realized I had taken antihistamine for my allergies in the afternoon, so solved the super sleepy mystery.  I only drank half of the soda and it didn't help anyway, so it was a good lesson learned.

I got to my 5 minutes of cleaning as well.  I was in no mood to do it when I got home (again, the super sleepies) but I knew that 5 minutes would go by quickly.  I was able to fold up and put away some laundry that otherwise would have been strewn around the house for many days.  I didn't get a lot done, but I got more done than I would have.

Looking forward to ironing out some bugs this week, like not having my treat in the morning knowing that I'll probably crave it and be more susceptible to binging later in the afternoon.  I also need to pick up my freggies for the week (no shopping this past weekend) and get a few more things for proper eating.

Congrats on getting thru Day 1.  Antihistamines mess me up too.  I can only take certain ones for my allergies and if I forget and take one I shouldn't I am so sleepy I have to be careful driving.

Made it through day 2 with just a little glitch.  I completely forgot about my freggie for the day - I honestly think I thought I'd already had one.  So today will have to be my off-day for the week.  I certainly didn't manage to forget about my treat!  I saved it for something sweet after dinner.  I managed to get my 5 minutes of cleaning in; worked on folding laundry.  That 5 minutes certainly goes quickly, but I feel like I'm still getting things done little by little.  If I can get the routine down then I'm going to plan on increasing the minutes either each week or every two weeks.
