Teirin
Last challenge went pretty well and I mostly need to continue what I was doing and expand on it a bit. This time with Avatar: TLA and Legend of Korra gifs. Yawara is actually about Judo but I enjoy these two series far more. Possibly heresy, whatever. I also do not guarantee that gifs will be particularly relevant. Not feeling so fussed about gradings on these. It's just what I want to work on for the next while. Kata: We're switching to me as Tori in prep for my grading. Try and work on picking up Danny in Kata Guruma at least once each class and run through the kata at least once per week when possible. Randori: We don't always do Tachi Waza Randori but do not turn down an opportunity when we do. Bonus - Review videos and material on fighting larger opponents. Check out Machete's last challenge for some of his resources. Daily Training: Burpees worked out well last challenge, as did adding a few minutes of handstands. Keep doing that. Add one other thing in per day: Lunges, dips, planks, whatever. Bonus for multiple. Reading: I'm reading more regularly after last challenge but I'd like to continue it. Finish Thinking, Fast and Slow, The Miracle of Mindfulness, and read something fun, even if short. Guitar practice: Try and get to 60 chord switches/minute by the end of the challenge. I'm currently at 24 to 30. Bonus - set up a budget item and start saving to buy one. My friend is fine with my current use of his guitar but I should work on getting one. Less money going to my power bill will help with this. Stupid winter. Will be around to check on all of you soon :-) I had to use it. I love this gif. 11 Quote Behave yourself, badly if necessary. Teirin
Thanks everyone :-) I was pretty quiet the last week and I may be a bit quieter on the forum this go around. Will see how everything goes. Sensei seems to be on board with more Randori the next while. Fighting the line may be in my near future. I am modifying the reading goal. Requiring reading certain things seem to incline me to feel like reading anything else. I'm on a bit of a short story kick right now. Anyone have any recs? Preferably somewhere in science fiction and fantasy though I'm not really fussy. Preferably not super dark but I'll give it a shot if it's highly recommended. We started watching a new anime called Plastic Memory on crunchyroll. First ep was really good and has a lot of potential. Looking forward to the second ep this weekend. Release is on Saturday but we tend to watch anime on Fridays. Also 6 eps into S4 of Korra. Love it! That series just keeps getting better and I love the A:TLA appearances. Just picked up the first season of that for a re-watch too. 2 Quote Behave yourself, badly if necessary. Current Challenge Judo - Shodan My Character Link to comment

sarakingdom
For SFF. I've had short story anthologies edited by John Joseph Adams pretty much blanket-recommended by someone I trust. Haven't really got around to it, but they look pretty neat. (I started on a weird-West anthology he edited, but had to return it to the library before I finished. I may need to check it out... Started back on Fate/Stay Night UBW, which only makes me wanna watch the original Fate/Stay Night (since I never saw it before) just to see how different the story paths are). Also watched Triage X and while the story is up my alley (action, blood, violence, vigilantism, scarred, angsty male protagonist shower scene with a dark past), the fact that is' by the same folks that made Highschool of the Dead...and it shows...kinda puts me off. We'll see how much meaningless fan service I can handle (at least Kill la Kill had fanservice as a plot point and an equal amount of male and female fan service). Korra is amazing. sarakingdom
Jennifer Brozek (who is up for a Hugo this year!) From all accounts, "nominated for a Hugo in 2015" is a phrase that's going to be infamous for decades, if the Hugo awards even survive the shenanigans of this year's nominations, so I'd be careful about using that as a recommendation for authors you like. I love Korra, so glad you're loving it too It's focussed around androids with limitted life spans. It looks like it will also deal heavily with life/memories and what makes someone a person. Think Blade Runner (lighter?) with a potential side order of Ghost in the Shell plus a lot of cute, because Japan. Hmmm, saw the earlier Fate/Stay Night and quite liked it. A Saber figma stands guard over one of my bookshelves where the cats can't reach her :-) Have been meaning to watch Fate Zero and the remake. A friend watched it and said it was very good. Erm, yeah. It's in the gloriously over the top category. Totally love Korra. So many awesome characters. Slates curated by a handful of guys that, at best, the decision of what deserved a slot this year was non-random and non-representative of the voting pool. And they don't all look like "at best" cases. I wouldn't say I was very familiar with current SF, but I read last year's Hugo winner, and it was a well-deserved win. Likewise Mieville's "The City and the City" from a few years ago. Not as keen on Gibson's latest as I'd hoped I would be. Bennett's "City of Stairs" was very interesting, and worth a read, though I feel the ending let it down some. I've been hearing huge amounts of buzz about "Station Eleven".
