The post boxes have a text recovery feature.  If you put your cursor in them, there'll be a little message in grey on the bottom if it has saved, unposted content from you for that post box, and it'll let you restore it.  It's not 100% (if it didn't have time to autosave, for instance, or if you post something else via the same box in between), but I've been able to recover almost everything I've tried.

I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.

Dude, this fecking site sometimes. It's like, Forum, can you even?

I accidentally hit the side mouse button that takes me back a page.  My own fault.

So, updates:

Monday - Was not in a good mental space on Monday, did SFA.  Good news was issued that evening though.  I may be taking off to Ottawa at some point for a while.

Tuesday - Judo and reading not much else.

Randori - Yes.  Already matched last challenge :-/

Kata - No, did not even consider the word until I was attempting to merge with the couch after class.

Burpees/other - no.  Though there were a lot of pushups during class.

Reading - Yes, spent some time with Thinking, Fast and Slow.  Some details below because I found this section particularly relevant.

Guitar - No, unless you count mentally playing on my way home while I walked :-)  Was listening to something awesome and trying to use my (very limitted) guitar knowledge to analyze it.

Mini challenge - not good so far.  I don't have a snooze button but I tend to curl back up for another 10-20 min.  That needs to not happen, especially this week with a roofing crew overhead early.  Sleep has not been good in general this week.

Judo Ramble -

Class was good.  We had a visiting Nidan from another club.  He's an excellent Judoka and a very nice person.  He was a bit overly careful with me in ground work until I asked him if he always went on defense with lower belts.  He then registered that most of the people I brawl with are bigger and was a bit more willing to fight.  I totally lost but I generally expect that when fighting higher belts, especially when they have mass on me as well.  I still learn from losing.  He had some great brawls with the bigger guys too and was very carefully teaching and not mauling the much smaller and new kid.  We worked on a new entry for Sankaku Jime and on Hadaka Jime.  Sensei felt like running us in general last night.  Lots of fun.  We introduced our guest to Zenpo Kaiten tag as a class finisher.  Always a good time and gets lots of extra dodging and diving roll practice in.

Did get some Randori in with the orange belt.  I normally win but got my butt kicked due to some rather bad moves.  Notably, going for a sacrifice throw when too far out to have good control of him.  A few other screwups on my part but that one was the worst.  Because I have to look incompetent in front of the visitor.  Eh well.  Happens.  The orange belt is also ~30 lbs heavier (not a big deal), strong, and a good Judoka.  We're quite proud of him :-)  Being beaten by someone less than half my age burns a bit but that's my problem.

So the changing Gi rules did mean that a bunch of high-end competition Gi's went on sale because they're no longer good for the major international tournaments.  Sensei bought some really nice Fuji Gold level Gi's at a steep discount.  I'm thinking of buying one since my current Gi's are years old and it would be nice to have a new one prior to grading.  The pants have been replaced for both of mine repeatedly.  We do a lot of ground work (as you can likely tell) and the pants knee patches tend to go first.

Grading is fast approaching.  That the grading board would pass me is apparently not in question at this point, so long as I don't fuck up the grading itself.  I still feel like I don't deserve it though.  I'm hoping to do a lot of Tachi waza in the near future to try and fix that. It's my weakness compared to ground work and I'd rather do as much as possible to fix it.  I'm also somewhat down right now and that's affecting my perception to some extent.

Ramble on Thinking, Fast and Slow

- a very brief summary of it's discussion of ego depletion and cognitive load.  Ego depletion is basically what has been previously discussed on NF as the limitted pool of willpower.  Studies performed have found that mental strain, physical strain, and lots of mental processing (cognitive load) all deplete the same pool of willpower.  So someone who handles a lot of emotional strain has less resources to handle cognitive load afterwards.  Similar for any of the other combinations.  It was noted that when one feels a lot of urgency or need to handle problems in life, capacity for willpower expansion exists to a degree and some people simply have more of it than others.

Less so for cognitive load.  That is how much mental processing someone can manage at any given time.  Once someone has reached their capacity, willpower is not going to allow them to exceed it.  I would assume that it can be trained gradually but that was not discussed.  It was noted that when someone is processing a very high load of information, their automatic system is more likely to make external decisions for them.  Basically, we fall back on comfort things and habits when our mind is very occupied.  They noted that some of the most engaging exercises are Add-1 and Add-3.  Someone is given a four digit number and asked to add 1 (or 3) to each digit without writing anything down.  They need to simultaneously hold the untransformed numbers, add one to the current digit, and retain the transformed digits.  They noted that add-3 was about the most people's cognitive load capability.  As your use of mental capacity grows larger, pulse increases and pupils expand.  In keeping a camera on someone's face as they processed this type of task, they could tell when someone was operating at high capacity and exactly when they gave up on a task.

Fascinating reading :-)  A friend refers to the automatic system as The Robot. He mentioned it after I noted that I was very absorbed in something at work and put my hair up at some point without registering that I did so. As automatic actions, that one's pretty harmless.

Roof replacement - starting earlier every morning.  I had to rush through my shower this morning as they showed up early and are working around my bathroom window right now.  Hope they aren't working the weekend, or at least aren't starting by 8 am on the weekend.

I didn't even register that!

Yes, Spoon Theory *very* much fits that.

Heh, I was tired and annoyed.  Glad it amused you :-)

Oh, so much the randori. Yes. This is where the Judo happens.

Besides, it's fun!  I do try and balance the different aspects of Judo but we do lean heavily towards ground work in my club.  I probably get about 6 groundwork fights in for every standup one.

Feeling an unusual amount of strain since Tuesday's class.  We didn't do that many more pushups than normal but I was trying to keep them deep.  Must have pushed it better than I thought.

Hmmm, there's a study here that worked on ego/willpower depletion and glucose consumption.  I'd be intersted in reading about their study setup but it's behind a payway.  Not overmuch of one so I'll think about it.

Did not get much done after work yesterday except cleaning.  The apartment was all of a sudden filthy.  I'm not even sure how it happened.  It was fine, then it was gross.  I did make some nice dark chocolate pudding.

2 ripe avocado

2-3 smallish overripe bananas

1/2 C cocoa

1 tsp cinnamon

2 tsp vanilla

1-2 Tbsp honey, depending on how bitter you like your chocolate

It's admittedly no less caloric than standard pudding or ice cream, but this has some good nutrients in it and makes a very decadent treat.  It's also a bit more flexible for avocado use :-/

Of course I zone it straight on the chocolate part of this post.  That sounds delicious and something easy enough for my lazy ass to make.  Yum!

I just finished reading Skin Folk by Nalo Hopkinson. The stories are a modern Canadian take on Carribean folk tales. Like European folk tales, some are on the dark side. Highly recommended.

Mhh, so you substitute milk with avocado and banana or is there another form of liquid in it? Is it made cold or should you heat the ingredients? I really like avocados and there are some overripe bananas lying around, so I would like to give it a try.

Thanks!  Love all the recs.

You always find delicious, delicious things. I can't see avocado being good for a pudding, but now that I think about it, I don't see why it couldn't be...

The texture really works!  It's also got a very nice rich flavour to it, though people who aren't big on dark chocolate considered it utterly revolting.  So there's that.  I love the general belief around here that good food is not nasty.

Ooops, forgot the instructions part.  Put all ingredients in a food processor (blender might work?), blend until pudding-ish, refrigerate :-)  It's really easy!  No other ingredients than the ones I listed.

This challenge is so far not feeling overly challenge-like.  I'm kind of in maintain mode while my focus is somewhat elsewhere.

Thursday:  Ended up feeling quite sick later in the day and begged off Judo.  It settled late in the evening and I'm still not sure what it was.  Had a nice chat with my parents, checked for newbies in the giant Recruit section, and got a very tiny workout in before bed (15 burpees, hand stand work, and a pullup attempt though I didn't make it).

Friday: Felt much better!  Got a mini-workout in before walking to work:  50 burpees, HS work, 2 pullups.

Today:  Same mini-workout in this morning.  It looks like a chores and work day otherwise.  There's some documentation for work that I can't seem to work on there.  It'll be much easier to finish in the quiet at home.  Hopefully some reading later.

Cool news, Simonster is doing an AMA on r/bodyweightfitness next weekend.  Sweeet.

I was able to get the paper. It is a review article. The basic argument is that motivation should be considered along with willpower in self-regulation.  The study they cite for glucose helping with ego depletion was Gaillot et al. (2007) J. Personality and Social Psych. 92:325-336. The authors state that self-control requires a minimum level of blood glucose. I haven't read this one yet.

That suggests that if a person just can't make herself do another set, having a drink or snack with sugar will help.

Have been in something on a worried funk of late.  Have been kicked out of it.  Will post a proper update soonish but I need to go to bed now.

Preview:  ran class tonight as Sensei is away.  No ground work, spent about half the class doing attack and defend.  Gi is currently hanging to dry.

Can anyone recommend any short guided meditation appropriate to the end of a class?  We wanted to do a bit at the end of class but none of the Calm app ones were really appropriate and we didn't have 10 min left anyway.

You could do a simple anatomy list meditation. Feel your breath moving through each part of the body relaxing that area on the exhale. Start at the top of the head and work down to the feet. Include or skip over parts based on the time available.

Glad that you got past the worried funk. Hopefully the weekend will help get you back on an even keel.
