Shotokan's gets better kicks with the plan of no planning

In my past challenges, I thought that I had good plans in place and simple goals, achievable goals. For some reason, they haven't worked as planned and even though I always start off like gangbusters, around the third or forth week, it seems to fall apart.

With that in mind, I am going to throw all the specific plans away and do the plan of no planning. Instead of being detailed and strict with movements and goals, this time is going to be do what I do as long as I do something.

My goal of better kicks is still the main focus but it's time to take a different path to get there.

1. Kick every day

No specifics here, just do some kicks every day. I can be 1, 10 or 100 kicks with each leg the only requirement is to kick every day. The kick doesn't matter as long as some type of kicks are done.

2. One exercise every day

Again, no specific exercises but they have to be related to my hips, glutes, abs or core in general. It can be one or 10 but at least something.

3. Stretch every day

A single stretch every day no matter how long it's held, dynamic or static or a full routine, stretching needs to happen.

Life goal: Clear my head of what's not needed

This is one area where I am struggling and doing something to help me get focused on what I need to focus on and not focusing on what I don't need to focus is becoming more important. Walking, meditation, sitting in seiza for a few minutes or breathing kata could be some of the things to help me get in or out of my head.

There may or may not be more to come to the plan of no planning....   :)

Let me know when you've got the "clear my head" figured out?

I will certainly share it when I figure it out. :)

I guess I do have one way that I didn't realize I was doing until I typed the comment above.

Today was a day where I had to focus on some good stuff and it really kept the bad stuff out. I guess that is one part of the puzzle to have enough good stuff to think about that it totally keeps the bad stuff from entering our heads.

Sometimes, the time off in between the challenges is a good thing. Even though I have still been training, it's nice to have a little forced rest to give the old body some time to recover.

Workout: Day 1

I started the day with a planned workout but when time came to do it, I did something else. :)

I did what I felt like doing and I ended up having a really good workout overall.

2 supersets of 12 reps of band clam shells, band glute bridges and reverse crunches.

Static Tabata stances - 30 seconds work / 15 rest of front stance, back stance, horse stance and square stance. (both legs for front and back stances)

Cheechoe's awesome hip routine - Have I mentioned how much I really like her routine??? :)

I am having some pain issues with my left hip and knee and I think I am starting to tear down some scar tissue around my left hip joint which should be a good thing.

I still need to do some stretching tonight and I think sitting in the split position (my splits only go to about 100 degrees but it's better than it was) while playing some Call of Duty will take care of that.

I still need to figure something out to focus my mind better. I was really focused and clear headed last week but this week is starting out a little cloudy....

Splits and COD? How badass monk/nerdly is that?

Also, you're probably in a position where you can feel what needs to be addressed and such. You have a way more holistically martial experience, and I envy you that. I hope it serves you well this challenge.

Scar-tissue break up? Ooooh. Painful. Glorious. Keep us informed.

It is really nerdly isn't it? :) I ended up sitting in the splits for 10 minutes, moving my legs farther apart as time went on but the fun part was getting my legs back together at the end. They were stuck but as I slowly got them to move back both hips made a loud pop. :)

I do have an idea of what needs to be addressed but I am very lazy by nature. :) The main goal is to do something every day that will help me improve even it it is only a little improvement.

Painful, yes but not too glorious yet. :)

Nice first day!! :D

I like the idea of having the time set aside for doing something, but seeing how you feel once you get there. I seems like it can keep you going longer.

Dose Kicks, yo! :D

I totally agree! Once Is start going, it is easy to do more but it's the start going part that seems to be the hardest.

Workout: Day 2

And what a workout it was. Karate class was so tough, I can't even describe it. After 4 hours of teaching classes, I was already a drained but I thought how hard could my class be. Little did I know, we ended up doing kicks for almost 20 minutes. The majority of those kicks were side thrust kicks along with static holds for what seemed like an eternity. I don't remember my legs shaking in a long time but I am sure I will remember this class for a while.

I did get in a lot of stretching too while warming up 3 classes and then in my own class so that was covered for the day.

Opps I forgot, there was 40+ push ups in there too.

Overall, day 2 was more of a workout than I expected.

Lot of martial/process type stuff, sounds like. But that was according to the plan anyway, right?

The best part was, I didn't plan to do all those kicks but for some reason, my Sensei must have been reading my mind. :)

Workout: Day 3

I didn't want to anything because my legs are sore but I had to do something, right?

2 supersets of 12 reps of band clam shells, band glute bridges and reverse crunches.

Static Tabata stances - 30 seconds work / 15 rest of front stance, back stance, horse stance and square stance. (both legs for front and back stances)

The stance training was really painful on my left leg but pain is weakness leaving the body or so I have been told.

Also, 2 sets of 10 minute split stretches with COD again. :)

And something that I didn't post the last few days is there are katas being done every day.

Woot! Way to fight through the pain! Hope it was the good kind and not the bad.

It was enough pain to keep me up until 3:30 that night but it was petty much gone by the time I got up.

Workout: Day 4

Today was totally unplanned. Some 5 x 5 fun and my son did it with me too.

Rack Deadlift - 5 x 145 x 5

Bench Press - 5 x 145 x 5

Barbell Row - 5 x 95 x 5

Barbell curls - 2 x 55 x 5 just for fun

Cable crunches - 2 x 20 x 12

Clam shell with band - 2 x 12 each leg

Glute bridge with band - 2 x 12

And for later tonight, at least 10 minutes of COD split stretches .

Workout: Day 5:

Today was teaching Karate and taking Iaido class but going to teach the early classes gave me enough time to get in Cheechoe's hip routine and some kata work.

Also, 20 minutes of split stretching while playing COD.
