CM’s Dream of Spring Challenge

Was going to call it winds of winter, being the next installment and all but damn if we haven’t had enough winter up here in Massachusetts!

 

Long Term Goal – reduce calculated body fat to 25%

April 25, 2014 – 29.2%

April 6, 2015 – 28.3%

This is taking a lot longer than I’d like, but I’m getting there. Progress is progress. Plus, I love having fun and eating sweets, therefore, the going is slow. Much like awaiting the sixth GoT book, it feels like it’ll never happen.

I technically need to lose 6.2 pounds of pure fat to get to 25%.

 

Lifting weights turn out to be my favorite exercise routine. That’s why I’m in the warriors! However, I haven’t had specific lift x amount goals because my main focus is to drop that body fat %. I don’t want to muddy the waters. I also have some serious ankle/calf mobility issues which hinder my squat. I’ve been subbing in goblet squats for back squats while following a 5/3/1 routine.

 

The goals!

continued rules that I have down: 1) track on myfitnesspal. 2) Log less than 13,300 calories per week. This got me about a 2# loss the last 6 week challenge and keeps me fueled enough to continue lifting. 3) Log at least 32% protein each week.

Continued rule that I’m not 100% on: log food before or immediately after it goes in my mouth. Take 15 minutes on Saturday and Sunday to do this at some point after my second meal.

New rules: No restaurants or take out except during vacations and life events (see below).

Lifting: continue 5/3/1 program at least 3x per week

Running: at least once per week

Mobility: yoga once per week and watch/try out at least one mobility exercise per week

Bodyweight movements: at least 3x throughout the challenge. Should include handstand and pull up practice.

(Life Events/Tasks)

The SO’s birthday – already bought the gift, just need to wrap it, get a card, and some GF cupcakes! The celebration will be 4/11 and the actual bday is 4/14.

Check dryer duct by 4/18 to make sure we’re not going to start a fire

4/25 – Friend’s 30th birthday party

4/26 – Cape Cod 5K

4/27 – Dentist

5/2-5/6 – Las Vegas trip. Walk everywhere when safe/possible. Keep to modified paleo rules and calorie limit.

5/11 – 5 year dating anniversary. Get card and gift! Plan something to do. 5 years feels like a landmark I should’ve started planning for more than a month in advance…

5/22-5/25 – Ptown camping trip. get packed and ready by that Thursday so that we can leave immediately after work on Friday night. Prepare plenty of paleo foods (boil eggs, make tuna salad, chop veggies, marinate meat). Borrow camping stove from someone. Leave restaurant visits to one with just the SO and otherwise only if other friends are going out. Unless it’s monsoon rains again, then it might be more tricky.

of COURSE he is. when i was putting together this challenge i actually found out about all these chapters from winds of winter he's been releasing since i think 2010. stop releasing random chapters and write a damn book like a good author should! i don't want to have to go searching for free easter egg chapters i just want to buy your book. would that be such a bad thing?!

Checking in and saying hi!

I am not sure if you are looking for ideas.....  so I will spoiler them.

For me the formula has been:  Tracking + Accountability = Success.  Keeping treats out of the house has helped a lot too, since I know I will get more than what I need outside the house.  Would a managed schedule of 6 days on and 1 day off help?

always looking for ideas! and you're right on the money with those. i already do not keep any treats in the house (beyond dried fruit and quest bars) :) i also am quite meticulous about my food tracking! I use a food scale and put together weird meals that i might have out at a restaurant. i do really well during the 5 work week days and then fun prevails on the weekend. i am usually fine with the slow progress, but if you catch me whining about it, just remind me that i chose this path!! the weekly calorie limit and protein goal seemed to work well last challenge. if I can keep that up for the next few challenges i should be on my (slow) way to 25%!

i can only half agree that he knows what he's doing... wasn't this series supposed to be a trilogy when it started? ;)

This is why I love Brandon Sanderson. I've thoroughly enjoyed his books, they are by no means short and he does not take a gazillion years to put out a new book. He's putting out new books all the time. My theory is that he actually has a TARDIS or some device with which he can freeze time (Did Dr. Horrible get his Freeze Ray working, perhaps?) because the speed with which he writes is just astonishing and just can't happen with time as we know it.

I've seen his name thrown around here... but haven't read ANY of his books!! The only audiobooks my library has are Words of Radiance, The Rithmatist, and A Memory of Light. Looks like the rithmatist is the only book 1 in that group... should i go for it?!

I've seen his name thrown around here... but haven't read ANY of his books!! The only audiobooks my library has are Words of Radiance, The Rithmatist, and A Memory of Light. Looks like the rithmatist is the only book 1 in that group... should i go for it?!

 

I've not read the Rithmatist yet myself. But it's Sanderson, so I'm assuming it's good. Do you not do physical or e-books?

hahaha i do real books! that just involves actually going to the library to borrow and return. and i'm lazyyyy. alternatively, i don't have an ebook reader... and haven't really felt like i've needed one. i get by with the audiobooks and borrowing :D

hahaha i do real books! that just involves actually going to the library to borrow and return. and i'm lazyyyy. alternatively, i don't have an ebook reader... and haven't really felt like i've needed one. i get by with the audiobooks and borrowing :D

 

If you do real books, RP has a copy of Mistborn that I'm sure he'd let you borrow (if nerd visits are easier/infringe less upon your laziness). I totally get the "ugh, but the library is so farrrr". This is why I end up buying many books second-hand. Besides then then are available for rereading or looking things up again when I'm farther along in the series and need to remember what happened in a scene a few books back.

Mistborn was good.  Get thee to the library.  But I can't say he's an author that made me rush out and read everything he's ever written in an obsessive spree.  Not that I've ever done that (totally have done that).

Hmm... for our 5 years we did a weekend away.  Went to the mountains, bummed around town, stayed in a nicer (but affordable) hotel, had a room picnic, hot tubbed, etc.  I'm brutal at gifts, (seriously, just tell me what you want) so we try to just do stuff together.  Next year is #10 and I'm just starting to plan some of our Europe trip and figure out how much money we might be willing to spend.

good to know! if i can't get RP to meetup (he's got a lot of travel plans happening in the near future) i will just get my arse to the library.

 

we usually do the same! (obviously. twins.) this year is weird because we have las vegas with other friends two weekends before and the camping trip two weekends after (likely with friends as well but we'll go to our fav restaurant just the two of us). so i kind of feel like i should do a gift to make it special. hmf. we'll see. maybe we'll just take that saturday before and do at-home type fun/relaxing things. maybe i'll take her to the aquarium or zoo. she likes that shit.

I'm in town for the marathon, just sayin'. RP will be gone but maybe you can get preapproval to borrow the books as mantinney will be around! And raptron has agreed to "take" me to CSC on friday...

 

RP only has Mistborn. He borrowed the other 2 in the trilogy from me. Unless he has since acquired them that is.

Lifting?  Meal tracking?  GoT?  We wrote our challenges 12hrs apart and they're similar!

 

I love the idea of a calorie goal for the week.  I get too hard on myself for daily, so I'm going to try weekly to take the pressure off.

 

I tried mobility stuff during my last deload week and found a few movies that I really enjoyed and now include them in warm-up/cool down/just 'cause.  I even bought a foam roller.  I think you'll really like mobility work.

a weekly calorie goal works wonders for me since i'm good at being well under during the week and then making up the difference on the weekend! hopefully you find it's less stressful too :)

oh gahhhd. mobility. it's been something lingering in the back of my mind for many a challenge but never wanted to make a real goal out of it. i have a foam roller as well that i NEVER use! if i can get myself to do something mobility focused once/week that'll definitely be a step in the right direction! especially for my sad squats.

i know of the stick from you! that might have to be my next investment. but i can't justify spending more money when i already have some tools i could use but don't set aside the time to use them. soooo i'm starting with getting the habit down :)

Oh man, I missed the Sanderson discussion.  I haven't read Mistborn, but I'm down with everything of his that I have read. 

 

I like your idea of having a list of to-do's and the dates to have them done by.  I may have to steal that plan from you. 

 

I'm in for this challenge, good luck!
