We did heaps of hiking on snow-encrusted trails, getting farther into the high country than I would have thought possible at this time of year. We also horseback rode and did regular Tai Chi and Qigong, either with me leading or in 4 different classes. We are now walking our way through New York, Manhattan Island I should say. Racked up nearly 9 miles yesterday and will likely do the same today. She's also a writer, so in between our jaunts we buckle down to the books. She's written a new chapter and I have made significant progress on my queries for the April 24-26 Pikes Peak Writers Conference in Colorado Springs (I'll be pitching there). I love feeling so energized about what I'm doing, and the progress feels great! I want to keep up the momentum from this fabulous visit through the following goals. Main Quest: Return to my "Work at Home" level of fitness After starting NF 9 months ago, I've lost 25-30 pounds out of my target of 65 (fluctuations based on good or poor habits). I seem to have stabilized around my current mid-70s benchmark-- I'm not diving up by 15 pounds as when I first went "on maintenance", but only about 5 pounds if I'm "bad". I feel I'm reset at a much healthier level, and now I want again to make some progress on this main quest. Fitness Challenge #7: Ranger Regularly I had so much fun hiking, and received so much inspiration from my recent hikes, I want to continue that. So I'm making it a challenge to get outside more: - Do 1 proper mountain hike or "mega-exercise" per week- Do 1 supplemental outdoor activity, such as a major walk or bike ride on the plains Health Challenge #3: Sugar baby! I found previously that stabilizing my sugar was the surest key to weight loss. I want to get back on the sugar wagon and keep my daily input below 41 grams. Life Quest Challenge #3: Write 6+ hours a week I have specific short-terms goals to meet regarding my writing conference and its specific aftermath. Now that my big Mar/April vacation is handled, I'm ready to get back to my writing goals. Scoring: Award or decrement accordingly G1: A=lose 6+ pounds, B=4-5, C=2-3, else fail -----> CHA +3G2: A=2+ workouts/week, B=1-2, C=1, else fail -----> STR +2, DEX +2, STA +2G3: A=42-38 days success, B=37-31, C=30-24, else fail -----> CON +3G4: A=6/6 success, B=5/6, C=4/6, else fail -----> WIS +3 I feel good about this Spring. Awesomeness will occur. Sounds like a good plan to build on previous successes, and also to find things that are more "fun" than "chore" to keep that motivation. It's nice to have company, and important to have accountability! Sounds like a good plan to build on previous successes, and also to find things that are more "fun" than "chore" to keep that motivation. That's what I'm aiming for: fun with results. I'm slowly learning how to adapt this process so I can have fun and integrate health into my life. I feel as if I've made important gains here, and look forward to some health velocity in the upcoming challenge. I'll post some pics now and again, although I find the NF process cumbersome. Perhaps you have a helpful tip? The mountains were STUNNINGLY beautiful this Spring, which motivated my challenge. See you soon! I love it but unfortunately moved from one of the best places to walk up some hills/mountains to the flattest place in the country. Harihead Posted April 18, 2015 Author Report Share Posted April 18, 2015 Hi, folks! Doing a little check-in. My vacation was WONDERFUL for me! Hiking icy and majestic mountain trails, horse riding in the snow, exploring new environs under various conditions from challenging to sublime. I still feel rested and re-energized. As expected, my sugar gram cap is magic. I have re-attained my lowest weight since starting Nerd Fitness, yay! The weather has been snowy and rainy this week, so maybe a hike won't go so well. Lots of mud on the trails. I'll bring my boots today just in case I can fit something in after my writers workshop. Just a few stats:Weight 173 (-30 pounds)BMI 38% (1% improvement)Comparison 51% to women my age (yay, I'm normal!) Really looking forward to this challenge. I have a writers conference coming up this next weekend, and then I will FINALLY be free of timed commitments and get to some relaxed living. Unless an editor wants a book, then I'll be writing like a maniac. Oh, forget it. I'll always be over my head. Live life to the full, I say! I will check in with the boards I hope tomorrow. Harihead Posted April 24, 2015 Author Report Share Posted April 24, 2015 I'm having to improvise madly around my Ranger goal. The weather has been snainy on the weekends, so the trails are all mud. I've compromised by taking 2-mile walks at lunch and a long bike ride. I'm at a conference this weekend. They're feeding us, so I expect trouble in the sugar gram arena. I did bring a cooler of chicken breasts and fresh veggies, which will form breakfast and emergency snacks for the 3-day duration. I had hoped to get in a hike on the way home, but they're now saying rain. I drive around with all my hiking gear, to be prepared. It turned out to be lucky, because I forgot my bathing suit and this hotel has a fairly nice pool. So I'm wearing my quick-dry hiking shorts to swim in. Did my 20 minutes this morning before conference registration, which I hope will settle the nerves. I'm pitching 2 books to agents, hope it goes well! Sorry for being such a rotten team player. I hope I'll be able to check in more next month. Actually, I hope I'll be so busy delivering partials to agents that I won't have time again. It was a good crop; only one looked as if she really didn't want to be there (there's always one!). Conference was awesome. I have lots of work to do now. Let's hope they want to move on to step 2-- a contract! I did rather better at Rangering this week, managing a hike before the rain settled in. On the down side, I did worse on sugar (expected; these are like super pasta people). Hopefully the weather starts to clear up a bit for you so you can get out and do some more hiking. I have been itching to get some hiking in, and I am finally getting out this weekend, Woo Hoo!! I do plan to get on board for the next challenge. I have life in a good place right now, so it's time to concentrate again on Nerd Fitness. What I did tonight: I zeroed out my Nerd Fitness Academy. I was up to 11th level. I'm going to start all over from the beginning, because I think having those tasks in front of me is very motivating. I'm starting again tonight!
