Round 3! FIGHT!!

After getting knocked on my arse last round and barely beating the count, I am back up. Corner has me patched up and I am ready to deal some damage of my own. My plan is to keep moving! I stop moving, I get knocked the flip out! I keep moving, I will come out of this round with the momentum.

Following is my reset, starting 4/27/15.

My main focus is to establish morning and evening routines as habit.

I have identified two issues as likely reasons behind recent failures to achieve my goals. First is my weakness and general undoing, the internet. Limiting my internet use will be the primary factor to ensuring success. Second is a lack of motivation. I need to really grasp the intrinsic motivational factors to accomplishing my goals.

I am ready to go all in with my goals. I WANT THIS!! Here goes!

Goal #1: Build Habits

7 days per week

Daily routine is as follows:

  1. wifi and computer will remain off until daily routine is complete
  2. drink 48 oz. of water
  3. workout
  4. stretch
  5. meditate
  6. dailies

Evening routine is as follows:

  1. turn off wifi and computer by 1930
  2. get ready for bed and prep for next day
  3. brush teeth
  4. in bed by 2015

Goal #2: Workout

7 days per week

MOVE EVERYDAY!

Simple. Everyday I will either strength train or do some conditioning. Whatever my body feels like doing, that is what I will be doing. I will do this first thing when I wake up or as soon as I get off work.

Goal #3: Stretch

7 days per week

Become more flexible. I will stretch after EVERY workout and some.

Goal #4: Meditate

7 days per week

Stop and just be. At least 5 minutes each morning, I will ready my mind and soul for the day.

Motivation

  • I want to build these habits now in order to make life easier when I have my hands full with a kid. If I am going to want to continue to accomplish my goals, I am going to have to be able to balance life efficiently.
  • I want these habits to rub off on my child.
  • I want to improve the quality of my life and maintain my health and fitness in order to actively participate in my child's life long into the future.

When looking up ways to be better motivated, I found two questions that I felt like I needed to answer.

What is my life purpose, what drives me?

  • Before I found out that I was going to be a father, I don't think I had a personally acceptable answer to this. Now it is easy. I want to be the best possible person and role model for my child. I want to be able, to the best of my abilities, to raise my child to becoming the best person possible. Most importantly, I want to show my child my unconditional love and to love unconditionally.

What are my top 10 values and is my life aligned with these values?

  1. Integrity
  2. Wisdom
  3. Simplicity
  4. Caring
  5. Bravery
  6. Self-sufficient
  7. Playful
  8. Kindness
  9. Love
  10. Balance
  • I believe I am pretty on point with these values and hope to instill them in my child. I expect to further develop these values along with my child.

Let's do this! Be sure to use them avatar skills and light a fire under my arse if I start slipping up.

I do believe I need to get over to Silvershire and complete a feat also.

Wow, that's a lot of volume. But then, you're a hell of a lot stronger than I am, so who am I to judge?

It is a lot of volume, can't argue with you there. I am definitely setting my goals high, but I am SOO ready to reach the next level.

Strength comes in many forms, it is all in how you use it.

cmwanderin!! My push up and pull up buddy!!

I've used you as my motivation on a number of occasions during painful chin up pyramids... I owe you some serious thanks man :)

Having said that... when I look at your exercise routine the only thing I can think of is - holy cr*p that looks like a lot of work!

Good luck :) I'll be following and cheering you on :) :)

Dude! You have me totally amped right now with your progress in everything!! I am definitely playing catch up at this point, and I like it! This next six weeks will definitely be some work, but I am stoked to get started on some CRUSHING, SMASHING, DESTROYING, ALL OF THE ABOVE!!

The past two days have been a good warm-up to this Challenge. The wife and I are finally getting around to xeriscaping our back yard. I had let the grass go when we first moved in and let anything that can't make it in the desert die it's slow, tedious, dehydrated death. The problem is that we never did anything with our backyard and so it was just a dirt patch. With 3 dogs, 2 now :(, all that dirt found its way inside. Anyway, yesterday I busted up and stacked the concrete lining that circled the grass and filled in the hole. Today we began cleaning up rock from a residence we found on craigslist, for free, and brought over three truck loads. I am estimating three more truck loads next weekend to finish, yay!!

Needless to say, after two solid days of productivity, we got a pretty darn good workout.

I am soo ready to tear it up in this challenge!

UGHHHHH!! I have to wait a month!?!

Fair warning to Game of Throne fans, do not watch the leaked episodes. They are amazingly good and will leave you hanging, gasping for breath, for the next MONTH!

Now that I have done absolutely nothing for the first day of the Challenge, I am going to go try to salvage what is left of the day and my sanity.

Week 1, Day 1: Complete!

I was able to pull it off after wasting most of my day.

Strength workout went really good considering I hadn't done anything in about a month. It did kick my butt however.

Conditioning was not as successful. I only got through 1 round, sorta-barely, before I thought I was going to die. This should improve quickly.

Stretching felt great!

Meditation is still to be done, but looking forward to my first session.

Habits were completed enough to be considered a success. Some of the things not completed were out of my control.

Strength and conditioning stats will be posted in my daily log soon.

This challenge is going to be AWESOME!

Week 1, Day 2: Complete!

I was able to shake off the grogginess of my after work nap and knock out all my goals AND even hit up the Dentist for some deep cleaning. It's just too bad I get to go back on Saturday for a filling, boo!

I will likely have to take it easy for the rest of the week and do some active recovery. The DOMS is coming!

Strength went solid. Only worry continues to be a popping and grinding knee. There is no pain, so I work through it, but I am sure to not over do it. I will likely get arthritis in the years to come as my knee slowly falls apart on the inside. Life.

Conditioning went WAY better than yesterday. I got in all 12 sprints. Even wore my cleats to continue to break my feet back into them after nearly 14 years of no use. I will hopefully be partaking in a 3v3 soccer tournament next month.

Stretching is awesome! Meditation will be done. Tasks all complete.

In other news, I plan on buying a Squatty Potty. In case you really wanted to know. Check it out. I tried the method for the first time today, and was impressed. I think my practice holding the deep lunge has helped the positioning, so I didn't have to problems right off the bat like some peeps do. I am continuously looking to simplify and better my life, and I feel there are a lot of corrections that must be done due to modern ideas. Along with correcting defecation position, I am slowly working up to walking on the balls of my feet instead of heels, and I plan on phasing out sitting in chairs, That is my little rant for the day.

Ready for tomorrow!!

Week 1 Day 3: Complete, for the most part.

Was off to a good start. Knocked out my strength goal at work, but then I got home, took a nap, and forgot to send out a tax extension form for a trust I am in charge of. I had to drive 30 miles out of the way to go send it off at a Post Office that stayed open late. That messed up my bed time, but I went ahead and did all my other stuff anyway. The bed time is part of my task list, and the most important part really, but I am giving myself a complete this time since USA beat Mexico, Dos a Cero!!!

Wow - good job getting the tax forms out.  Many years, we drove to the airport post office and waited in line with all of the other deadline shavers in the city to file by midnight.

Week 1,

Day 4 went well. Got everything done except meditation.

Day 5 was a total fail. I felt like I was going to give up on my challenge, until

Day 6 lifted be back up. I did not do what was planned, but continued putting rock in our back yard. After 3 truck loads in the heat, I was pretty spent, but I went ahead and knocked out 1,500 lunges for the mini and since today was technically leg day.

Today I will be in Tucson all day, but will try to get back on track. With the spells I go through, I need to find good ways to snap out of them before it completely derails me like past challenges.

lol, that was my first time. It was funny how it was set up like a special event. They had the street coned and marked, police officers were directing traffic, and the USPS workers were even working a drive-thru. Then again, they only had ONE post office open till 10 pm in the entire Phoenix metro area.

Thanks Ryuu! I am going to try to get it together and find some kind of consistency. I have problems staying motivated. But boy howdy when I am! I really need to figure this out.

Is competition a good motivator for you??  I tend to be really good at sticking to a workout when there is a goal that someone else will give me for completion.  I'll do nearly anything for a t-shirt!!!

Funny you bring that up. That is one of the traits I have been trying to find an even medium with and that I can take full advantage of someday. Competition helps me push harder, but it really doesn't get me going anymore. I was super competitive as a kid, but destroying everyone at everything made it harder to get the other kids to play with me. So I learned how to reign it in. Worked great at making me a very likable playmate, but now it is hard to take advantage of when it comes to advancing my fitness and skills. Competitiveness is one of those traits needed to push one self beyond limits, and I just haven't been able to get it back. I am fighting for it tho. I finally convinced my bestie to work out with me, after making some concessions. Since he had a kid and the wife had him on lock down, he has gone MIA. But I finally may have broke him out. I think it helped that I am getting ready to have a kid now, so he doesn't feel quite as left out (or whatever). He is super competitive, or at least he has it in him (has been hampered lately), so we push each other. Hopefully we can get that going again.

I have been staying active every day, but not according to my schedule above. I am ditching this challenge regarding the scoring and whatnot, but am continuing on with my quest. I will be making some changes to my goals above soon. Mostly simplifying and making things a little more fluid. I am somewhat of a perfectionist and so when life messes with my schedule, it messes with my head and drags me down. I just need to play some jedi mind tricks with myself to make sure I am working toward my goals without setting things in stone. Too much life happening!!

Updates coming soon...

I got this!!

I really hope you find a source of motivation that works for you!

A good source of motivation is such a personal and varied thing, that what is perfect for one person doesn't work at all for another. From the looks of your above post - you seem to have thought it out really well :) Good luck!

Thanks man! Yeah, I will be printing out my motivations and really be taking it to heart. It has been such a long time since I have been seriously motivated that it is hard to keep it up for any length of time.

Day 1 of my reset went very well. I think this new routine is going to make a difference in keeping me on track. Typically, I would just tell myself I can workout, or whatever, later on in the day. I would keep pushing it until I would have no time and just feel like a numskull for wasting my day. Now I can finish everything I need to finish... and then waste the rest of my day without quite as much guilt.

Workout:

I lowered the incline for my one-arm push-up, so getting closer to getting that. Straight bar dips are feeling very good and may have to go weighted eventually as I am not aware of any progression beyond. The other two exercises do not feel like I have progressed much and may need extra work. Increase sets from 3 to 5?

Superset 1:

incline one-arm push-up (22")                 1x8, 2x6 (each side)

tuck knees front lever row                        3x8

Superset 2:

straight bar dips                                       3x8

archer pull-ups                                         3x4 (each side)

Day 2 was good! This was the first test to see how my routine would handle on work days. As soon as I got home, I turned off my wifi and was able to get to work on what needed to get done pretty quick. Without the distraction, excuse, and just general drain that the internet has on me, it is so much easier and enjoyable to do the things I want to put my mind to. As long as I stay resolute in my decision to cut myself off from the internet before it sucks away my life force, I feel that I will be achieving my goals for a long time to come.

My workout was pretty decent, though warm. I am curious as to what I will be able to push myself to do over the summer. Working out in 110 degree weather after work does not sound at all enjoyable, or healthy for that matter. I will likely have to make some adjustments.

Workout:

My one-legged squat is rough to get started, but after the first set, begins to feel pretty good. My flexibility is going to have to improve greatly before I will be able to get one of these unsupported. L-sit felt stronger than the previous. I may up the time to 20s for at least one set next time, just to see. Hanging v-raise windshield wipers are feeling stronger and may be able to progress after another session or two. The next and final step, one-arm hanging leg raises, sound pretty daunting however. My bridge progression, which I started from the beginning last session, has hit its first hurdle. The short bridges from last session just seemed like busy work. The straight bridges, however, are pointing out some weaknesses. I will likely switch the order of the superset next week, as my arms did not want to hold my weight after hanging for so long. Worse, my shoulders apparently have a horrible range of motion. The progression calls for 3 sets of 40 on this step, and I only got 3 sets of 15. Hopefully this was a bad week for these, otherwise I have a long way to go.

Superset 1:

assisted one-legged squat                    3x8 (each side)

L-sit                                                       3x15s

Superset 2:

hanging v-raise windshield wipers         3x8

straight bridges                                     3x15
