Mad Hatter starts the countdown to the big 3.0

Mad Hatter

Recommended Posts

Why the title? Well tomorrow is my 29th birthday. Which is very close to 30. And while I don't have a problem with getting old as such, I always feel like I've accomplished too little and that I still have the same issues as when I was 20, especially relating to body image. I think it's really about time I'll squash those issues so that my 30's can be even more awesome than my 20’s. :)

I don't want to feel weak. I want to keep a consistent level of basic fitness that allows me to try anything I want without being hindered by or worry about lacking fitness.

I don't want to feel fat. My eating habits keep roller coasting from really good to really bad and while some natural weight fluctuations are ok, I don’t want the really bad in my life.

I want to feel accomplished and I’ve decided on a big epic quest to tackle - to reach contortionist level of bendiness. Why? Besides the obvious that I love circus and contortion, if I ever reach this goal it will be purely because I put in hours and hours of hard work and honestly that’s not something I often do. Things either come to me easily or I give up straight away. It's time to change this and what better way than an utterly ridiculous quest? :)

Goal #1: Contortion

Practice contortion 5x/week. This can be either backbends or handstands. Since my hamstring is cranky I'm going to do an experiment where I won't do any freestanding handstands but instead focus on body line drills, wall work and core strength and see what happens after six weeks.

Goal #2: Rehab my hamstring

Doesn't need further explanation, I just have to do whatever my physio, every day.

Goal #3a: Basic fitness

3a) Pull-ups

Last challenge I managed to get back to 1 crappy neutral grip pull-up (for the second time). I'd like to up the number to 5 pretty ones. I'm thinking of using a combination of the twentypullups program and Ido Portal's hanging challenge, unless someone has a better program for me?

3b) Run 5 km

I know, I know. Running. The thing is that even though I hate running, I still think that every able-bodied person should be able to run 5 km without it being a big deal. And my stamina is terrible, which I'm sure also affects my other activities to some degree. I'm going to aim to run 2-3x/week, but I'm not going to follow a program because I hate it when they tell me when to run.

Life quest: Level up my cooking

As a birthday present to myself I have binge ordered a whole pile of cookbooks in order to level up my cooking skills. Two recipe books, one technique book for savoury dishes, one for pastry and one inspirational book. Umm, shipping per book was cheaper this way? ;)

  • Cook 25 savoury recipes from the recipe books
  • Cook no more than one sweet thing per week
  • Tackle something technical once a week
  • Make everything from scratch

Side quest from last challenge: Add more everyday movement

I also ordered Katy Bowman's book Move your DNA and I'm sure I'll get more inspiration from that. For now I just want to keep up with some habits that I started:

  • Walk (or run) 250 km
  • Avoid sitting for more than 50% of the work day
  • Loo push-ups at work 2x/week
  • Loo pistols at work 2x/week

So yeah, before you say anything I did try to restrain myself when writing this challenge. :P The first two goals are the most important though, so I'll focus on those and hope I'll be able to do everything else as well. ;)

Here's to a fresh challenge!

Happy birthday! :) Sounds like your 30s are going to kick ass. (It should be worth noting that a woman reaches her physical prime as far as strength goes at around 31 on average. ;))

Great goals! I hope the pull-up thing goes well for you. It's one of those way-off one-of-these-days goals for me. Good luck!

Happy 30th year! I wish you a better-functioning hamstring :) Preferably your bad one, as a supercharged one isn't a fantastic lot of use when you other one is screwed... I know what you mean about big birthdays etc. giving you a reality check about where your life is going (or isn't going). Remember to appreciate that your life is already pretty fantastic, at least compared to most of the people living in centuries before us, or in disadvantaged communities of the world, but yeah, it's nice to get a reminder to get one's priorities in order and not stagnate, so that when your 30th birthday rolls around next year you can feel extra good about it.

Is your plan then to really specialise in contortion, to e.g. circus quality? :D it's great you're at such a level where that kind of thing is possible, I'm excited to see how this goes.

Great goals! Plus I love my 30s, did a lot of rediscovery and really finding myself here. Here's to an utterly ridiculous challenge!!!

Thanks! :D I'm glad you're enjoying your 30's, I'm sure I will too. It's just really time to dump the baggage now.

Sweet, then I have this year to get strong, and next year to get really, really strong and then I'll fit right into the statistics. :P

Thanks for the support!

I wish that too. I might even wish for a year without injuries, it's getting boring now. :P

I do appreciate my life, sometimes not quite enough as I should, but I do realise how extremely fortunate I am. But that doesn't mean it can get even better!

That's the plan! I really want to play with aerial stuff again too, but handstands and contortion is something that I can do anywhere and it's weird and unique, so the main focus is going to be on that. Honestly I have no idea what level I'll be able to reach, but I think I've read somewhere that to be considered contortion standard you should be able to do an ankle grab and a face frame, which I *think* are within reach. But it will take a really, really long time.

Happy birthday still and here's to the bendiest 30s ever!!!

Wish you happy hamstring times and general happiness with your body. Yes, do show it your appreciation a lot, bodies are super grateful for that and maybe also your feedback loop on when training is enough/too much/just perfectly great might refine even more. That's what I do wish you and selfishly so, because I wanna see all the awesomes  B)

Hah! With you being this bendy in your 30s already, your 90s will probably still look like this:

I really love your motivation for the contortionist stuff! Putting in hours and hours of hard work used to be standard for me in writing and martial arts but I've found it near impossible to do for these past two years. Finding that dedication for the first time (or again) basically gives you superpowers! The superpower is HARD WORK and once you've mastered it, you can apply it to anything in your life and level up faster than ever!

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see how you do! Good luck!!

Hey hats

Great challenge!  I recently crossed into my 30's.  In a year we will teach you the secret handshake.

Bendyness, omg is my first reaction.  I want to see how that comes along.

How do you plan to track not sitting for more than 50% of the day?

I use a fitness watch that counts my non moving time and reminds me to get up and move around.  I love this concept.

Also pull ups!  I love pulls, I will be doing along side you.  I used the 20 pull program a while back, it upped my numbers.  I found it hard to keep up with its progression thou.

Thanks! I'm always so inspired by people that put in the work and achieve amazing results. Much more so than the naturals. Sure they're impressive, but it's the average people that inspire me more. One day I'll develop that super power too!

In for bendiness. ;)

Woot woot

Oooh there's a secret handshake? Can't wait!

I haven't thought about how to track the sitting. I have an app that reminds me to take breaks, maybe I'll tweak it to somehow remind me to stand up. It's tricky though. On coding heavy days I tend to sit a lot more as I find it difficult to concentrate and stand at the same time. But then I also hate being interrupted and tend to ignore the reminder... Which I shouldn't, but I can't help it. On other days it's easy and I stand up most of the time... I'll ponder. Maybe just a simple notepad.

The rate of progression is kind of ridiculous. If I can even get up to 5 I'll consider it a huge win. 20 is just silly. But it will be interesting to follow a program for a change!

Week 1 Day 1

Not a great start to the challenge. I had planned to do backbends but instead I got absorbed in trying to solve a problem at work and worked overtime. Unfortunately nothing worked and I ended up undoing all my changes, got home late and tired and went to bed. More or less. I did do 3x5 loo push-ups and some of my rehab exercises, but that's it.

Week 2 Day 2

aa72fde231b900b50b4c23069ead318a.jpg

First thing in the morning B send me a message suggesting that the bites he's got in the past few days might come from bed bugs and not mosquitos, which send me into a paranoia frenzy and I frantically went hunting for any of the buggers. I couldn't find any but the idea of having them in my flat is enough to creep me out.

Then I had to wait for my parcel with books, it was supposed to come in the morning but guess what? It didn't. It came once I'd given up and gone to work, which means that I missed both my parcel and a presentation that I wanted to be at.

Next I restarted the work I was doing the day before. The code's out of my comfort zone so I asked for help and started again after a bit of encouragement. And ended up spending the entire day going round in circles, trying this and that and thinking that I was being stupid. Talked to someone else about it and it turns out that what I tried to do is not actually possible. Great. So I just wasted an entire day. Boo.

When I got home I thought, well if the day's going to suck I might as well add on to it and I went for a RUN, pretty much my first time doing cardio in years! I managed 2.7 km in 15 minutes, then I died. My comfortable running pace was way too quick for my lungs to keep up, so I had to slow it waaay down to a really awkward gate less than 5 minutes in. Still, it's better than expected. When I first started running after never having run before I only managed 2 minute bursts, so for starting from scratch again this is a lot better. 5 km in 6 weeks should definitely be doable.

After that I did Week -2 Day 1 of the twenty pullup program, did my rehab exercises and hammered my core. It was good. :)Then I remembered to test my max plank time, LOL. That was just painful. :P

Sorry about the rant. I needed it. Tomorrow I'll be back to my normal self again. :D

That cat gives me the creeps.  Sorry but those eyes look umm transplanted.

Also good job on the run!  OMG I hate cardio, and I put it on my challenge this time so thanks for the inspiration.

Yeah, I think your right. When I picked the picture, I thought the cat looked frazzled. But, the eyes do look super creepy. Quick assassins post some funny gifs to cheer MH up so she doesn't have nightmares of creepy eyed cats haunting her dreams. ;)

Good job with finishing the day strong even though it started baaadly lol, that's quite an achievement really.

I feel your pain with the "new code" thing as well... you do your best finding a solution to something, and then something doesn't seem to work and you ask someone who says "oh yeah, you can't do X with Y because of Z... I wonder whether [complicated thing you don't understand] might work...?"

Not that much of a rant really, hope you find a solution soon though! How does it work where you live, can you just pick the parcel up somewhere now? Or do you have to spend more time waiting for another delivery try?

And anyways, way to go on the run! That's a good starting point and I reckon you're right, 5k should be really doable in 6 weeks. May the running gods be with you! Or devils. Yes probably running devils.
