Tri, Tri Again, Squeege!

Recommended Posts

I've been away from the challenges for a while, but I'm back for another round! Going to keep it very simple. Last summer I did my first triathlon (a sprint) and I'm eager to do more (and go further!) this summer.

Main Quest: Do more triathlons! And other physical events! It'd be great to stay in good enough form to say "Yeah, I'll do that race this weekend, I don't need any special training for it!"

Goal 1: Improve!

-Each week I want to improve at least 3 of 5 things

  • Deadlift
  • Push-ups
  • Plank
  • Distance (swim)
  • Timed Run (3 mile)

Goal 2: Eat!

- I want to avoid eating lots of carbs (bread/pasta/rice/beer) at night. I'll be a little flexible on this, depending on the situation. A beer or a plate of white rice = bad. Topping a salad with quinoa = acceptable, if you have nothing else to eat.

Goal 3: Commit!

- Nerd Fitness challenges are super fun. I've done a few. I love starting them! I get pumped about my goals! And then my attention begins to flag. I can't keep up. I want to follow everyone and read everything and stress out about it. Or I mess up my goals and then avoid getting on altogether because I don't want to admit I messed up. So this challenge, I just want to finish it. Even if I do so poorly it is embarrassing. If I stick to it for the whole 6 weeks, with 3 updates a week, I'll be a freakin' champion.

- Goal 1: Improve!

  • 6 Weeks improving 3/5: A!
  • 5 Weeks improving 3/5: B!
  • 4 Weeks improving 3/5: C!

- Goal 2: Eat!

  • 37 - 42 days: A!
  • 30 - 36 days: B!
  • 24 - 29 days: C!

- Goal 3: Commit!

  • 6 Weeks with 3 updates per week: A!
  • 5 Weeks with 3 updates per week: B!
  • 4 Weeks with 3 updates per week: C!

Side Goal: Old Friends!

-There are lots of people I should talk to more often than I do. People that I miss and who make me happy. Each week I want to call or write to two of these people. This will be bonus, not graded. If I do well, I'll give myself a treat though.

(I'll update points later on...)

Hi Squeege! Love your goals...triathlons are awesome :)

Especially agree on how tough it is to stick with the challenge on the boards...even though everyone here is so encouraging, it's easy to post less and less frequently over the six weeks.

Can't wait to see your progress!

Thanks guys!

Last week in preparation for the challenge, I tried to get an idea of where I was with my Improve exercises. Generally...

  • Deadlift (7x85lbs, 7x105, 7x115, 7x115)
  • Push-ups (3 rounds of 10)
  • Plank (3 rounds of 1 min. 10 sec.)
  • Distance (swim) (about 1100 yards, this will be more about not being late and not talking to friends while I swim...)
  • Timed Run (3 mile) (my app didn't save my time, so I'm not sure...)

Thanks wovercast! It's good to be back.

Improve 1/3 (so far):

  • Swim - 1250 yards, had a good swim. Didn't chat too much, did a few speed drills, but for the most part just paddled along happily.
  • Run - 33 min. 20 sec. - This is definitely slower than I was a couple of months ago, but I'm not sure how it compares to my last run. My guess is about the same. Don't think I'll count it as an improvement, but now I have a time to improve on.

Eat 3/3 days (so far):

  • I've been doing extremely well with my eating so far! Not only have I been doing excellent at night (basically only veggies and protein at night), I've been eating healthy and controlled meals during the day. Hooray!

Improve 3/3!

  • Swim - 1250 yards
  • Deadlift - 7x105, 7x125, 7x125, 7x125... due to a miscalculation, I added a little more weight than I intended to, but I just went with it.
  • Push-ups - 4 rounds of 13 pushups
  • I might go for a run today, so I might have even more improvements this week!

Eat 4/6 days (so far):

  • Thursday I had dinner with my boyfriend and his step-dad and I had pizza. I could've done a lot worse (I could've eaten the entire pizza, but I didn't) but I could've done better (I could've had a salad), so I won't get a point for that day. Last night my brother was visiting and I had a beer at dinner. Don't even regret it!

  • Third update!

Week One is done and I think I have a great start to this challenge. I tried to do goals and have an approach to the challenge that I wouldn't get burned out on. I'm excited to consistently do what I've been doing for 6 weeks. I think I'll have some pretty fantastic results!

Thanks! Maybe I should just keep "accidentally" adding weight to trick myself into lifting more... except my back probably wouldn't like the trick! ;)  I don't have any races definitely planned yet, but I have a few on my radar. I might do a shorter one within a month or so, and there is one that I am going to do a slightly longer distance in August. That's the one I'm excited for. I have my eye out for options though!

Improve 2/3:

  • Swim - 1400 yards - I swam this morning and had a pretty good workout in the pool. Pretty soon we are going to start drills. Right now it is basically just swim swim however you like.
  • 3 mile run - 29:41 - Definite improvement!

Eat 2/3 days (7/10 total):

  • Last night I went to a restaurant that was giving part of its proceeds to an awesome organization. It started off pretty decent, mussels and a glass of red wine. If I stuck to that I would have given myself a point. But there weren't very many mussels, and my friend wanted to try mac and cheese, so we did. And then I ordered sweet potato fries, and pretty much ate them all. I went back and forth on whether I should give myself the point (I didn't eat the free bread, so there's a plus). A few of those things I would have let pass, but all together I couldn't do it. When I eat dinner at home I've been doing extremely well. Salads and omelettes, but no desserts or bread or booze.

  • Update 1. I'm glad I made this part of the challenge, it is definitely keeping me attentive.

In the first week I forgot about my Side Goal and didn't talk to any old friends. Today I texted someone who moved to the West Coast to ask when she can talk. Its been a while, so it'll be great to catch up with her!

So far so good :)

Hopefully you pick a race soon. I did a couple of triathlons 2-3 summers ago. I enjoyed it, but I never could get used to the bike. Well, it wasn't the bike as much as the rednecks in trucks who buzz you at 60 mph during training rides...

THIS. Completely agree...riding on the road terrifies me. Props to Squeegee and anyone who does it.

Week 2 Summary: I'm late...

Improve 3/3:

  • Swim - 1400 yards
  • 3 mile run - 29:41 - Definite improvement!
  • Plank - 3 x 1:30

Eat 5/7 days (10/14 total):

  • I could be doing better with this. I have been doing fine when I'm home, but I don't do well when I go out to eat or see friends or family. To be fair, I could be doing a lot worse. I'm going to try to step it up this week.

  • :( Definitely didn't do well with this goal this week. I try not do get on Nerd Fitness while I'm at work, and then it is easy for me to get busy or distracted with other things in the evening. I'm still focused on the goals, but I really want to keep myself focused on the write-ups as well. I want to make it through the entire challenge!

Second week went pretty well, not spectacular, but far from bad. I'm really liking the balance I have in my exercise goals. I'm doing lots of different things, and I'm not wearing any particular muscle group out, and I'm not getting bored. And it always feels good to be able to say "I'm doing this better/longer/stronger than I did last week!"

Luckily I don't bike very much on large roads with zooming cars! I generally bike around the city and I'm usually the one zooming by cars in traffic. There are also lots of trails to go on! Roads with faster traffic are definitely daunting, and I try to avoid them. When I find myself in those situations I am very nervous and very aware and generally am enjoying the ride a lot less. I might be doing a spring triathlon in a couple weeks, which would be very very cool!

The third week's update so far...

Improve 1/3:

  • Swim - 1700 yards! I did a few drills (floaty things for my legs to work the arms only, or boogie board for my arms to work only the legs) and got a really great swim in!

Eat 2/2 days (12/16 total):

  • Starting the third week strong! Speaking of eating, I bought a dehydrator and it came in last night! I dried fruit to try it out. I'm planning on drying meals to take backpacking. New toy!

Commit 2/3:

  • I'm counting yesterday's update for this week since it was in this week. Last week I only posted once, and I'm pretty disappointed that I didn't make time. I'll shoot for an extra post this week just to make myself feel better.

Quick report!

Improve 3/3:

  • Swim 1700 yards!
  • Deadlift: 7x115lbs, 2x7x125lbs, 7x135lbs
  • Push-ups: 4x15

Eat 3/4 days (13/18):

  • I had to change my numbers, I totally forgot that I had a couple slices of pizza on Monday. I'm going to my Mom's house this weekend, so there is going to be a lot of temptation. Ruh-roh. Saturday will most likely be a bad day diet wise. My Mom will want to cook, and feed me dessert, and my brother already told me he bought a growler of beer.. I'd have to tell them to stop if I saw them a lot, but since I don't, I usually treat myself! But I'm hoping to get a run in and maybe beat my time, and improve 4 things, which would be fun!

Commit 3/3:

  • Done! Anything beyond this post will be extra. Feeling good about the third week!

Not an exemplary start to the third week, but I am going to kick it up a notch and finish the week strong!

Improve 0/3:

  • :(

Eat  2/3 days (17/24):

  • As I suspected, there was ice cream at my mom's on Saturday night. Also, I ate ice cream last night! I was home alone, and I ate ice cream. I can't blame it on any one, or any special visit. I just ate it. So, my score for this part of the challenge is still okay, but I need to keep myself in check if I want to get a passable score at all!

Commit 1/3:

  • Its already Wednesday night, and I was trying to wait until I had something good to report, but I have nothing. So instead of ignoring my posting goal, I am going to post that I haven't had a good third week so far. I tried to swim this morning, but the pool was closed. I just haven't gotten up to go to the gym, or gone for any runs. I need to not let any more days go by before my next workout. I'll do something tomorrow, not sure what, but it'll happen. But I am still in the challenge!
