Tin Man Runs with Consistency

Hey guys...my last challenge didn't go so well. I did start running more which is good but still not enough. Other goals like being on the boards went about this well:

j1GoC8V.gif

Still hammering out my supporting goals but the big one is this:

Run. I really have an emotional attachment to running, I don't know why. It could be nostalgia for when I was in high school and on the cross country team. Maybe running just "speaks to me". Maybe I'm just a weirdo.

As for the BAA 5k, I won't likely be running that sub-27 minute race that I set as a goal because I would rather run the race with my girlfriend.

Another goal is lift. I got a membership at a Gold's gym so I can get back into barbells. I am much much much weaker than I was a year ago but the only way that will come back is by lifting, not beating myself up about not lifting (not that that is always an easy thing to do mentally). I do want to focus on running but on the side I want to get back some of those strength benchmarks, or at least not lose more ground seeing as running can be catabolic if not careful.

And, as always, mobilize

And BE ON NF. The best way for me to do this is by perusing while having my breakfast, seeing as I don't have work until 2pm.

Totally understand this. If you're a weirdo, so am I. So at least you have what I consider to be good company? I need to get back into running more, too. Running between 1 and 4 miles is that sweet spot where I'm not bored by the run, but I've pushed myself for long enough that I'm getting all the shiny happy hormones that put me in a better state of mind even if literally nothing else has changed. It's magic and I need more of it.

So basically I can share my plan and you can share yours and we can try to sibling-pressure each other into sticking with it because it makes us happy even if before we start running there's a strong case of the "I don't wannas".

This is what I've liked about the whole getting stronger thing - I'm not lifting crazy weight or anything (I'm not spezzy), but even with what I am doing I've found that what I've lost in my pacing for runs is more in my lungs than my limbs. My legs feel solid much longer than my ability to breathe is capable of supporting right now. So it's building up the breathing stamina and then I'm sure I'll be running like a madwoman all over the place. So maintaining what you can will totally help with the running side, even if you're not making strength PRs or anything is the point of that blarb because of course you are exactly like me.

Oh hey I ran Monday, that's good!

It was a good run. The goal was to run mile 2 at 9:05. That clearly didn't happen but I think I started to pick up speed before the mile 1.0 mark because no way I was running 10:13 pace before I picked up the pace. Then third mile was recovering from that and going up a pretty big hill, then last bit was downhill and on the way home. Anyway I can't remember last time I ran 4 miles under 10 min/mile pace so that's always a good sign! I also felt strong at the end, like I definitely could have kept going (though not at that 8:17 pace I hit for the last 1/6 of a mile).

You runneded great, Tin Man.

Glad you are here!

There's a mini for teamwork if you like.

Continue to have a good week.

I'm glad to be here too!

He's back, from outer space? Welcome Tinney!

I am indeed back!

yello! i love being able to run outside again :D get it!

I love it too! I'm gettin' it!

Welcome back again, seems being on NF will help you stay on your fitness goals a little better, just saying.  And cool trail near the house.

I agree with that. It also helps to have a significant other who loves running too. Couple runs are awesome.

The trail is cool! There are many, many more as well.

Oh hey there.

ohai.

What's the plan for the weekend, Tin Man?

Ran the 5k, watched the Marathon! More details will be below.

Do what speaks to you, so it can speak through you and show the world something better.

...

and in other less hippie-speak, you need to run to be ready for the Spartan.

I run to run, not to Spartan. Spartans are fun and I will do more, but road running is a beautiful and meditative thing.

So week 1 was pretty good!

ujNBw4I.png

About a 12 mile total. The 1.04 was a slow shake-out run before the 5k on Saturday. The 5k itself was a blast! It was a big race (~9,000 participants). Assuming average shoulder width if all participants stood shoulder-to-shoulder they would cover roughly 5k. It was big enough that the winner (and about a dozen or so others) finished before we even started! The winner scored a new American record of 13:22 (or ~4:17 min/mile for those not inclined to math).

I ran with the girlfriend and we got 32:37. This came to ~10:29 min/mile. It was so much fun to run with her, it really is great to be able to share running with her. And that it is something she independently likes and did before meeting me so it's not just something I got her to do. Heck she's the one who has run a marathon! I am a bit faster than her, especially over short distances but I was happy to hang with her and push her a little bit. I kept being about a 1/2 pace ahead of her. At times I ramped up the speed and she matched and other times she didn't and I went back to her pace. She's great at running her own race but I like to try to get her to see how much she can push out of her comfort zone.

After the 5k we went to the Boston Marathon Expo. It was awesome. I got a free treadmill gait analysis from Brooks: I am a neutral runner with regards to pronation and I land midfoot - nice! And for doing that gait analysis I got free lobster socks.

There were also so many things for myofascial release like The Stick and all its variations as well as some more...experimental designs.

Sunday then was a rest day, followed by Marathon Monday (also known as Patriot's Day). I dropped the girlfriend off where she was volunteering then AgentSka agreed to meet up with me to run to the November Project workout. We ran ~1.9 miles to get there. I'll let the NP blog post (link) describe what we did:

The recap of the day:

We played 1-6 to warm up. 1=Burpees. 2=log roll to the right and to the left. 3=hug someone. 4=invisible hula hoop. 5=5 high knee jumps. 6=run to find a new spot.  the Tribe ran quickly in place while I called out random numbers. Most people struggled to figure out what the movements were, but #TheTribeIsSmart and we picked it up pretty quickly. It was ok. It was awesome. It was madness, only a little chaotic, and dirty dirty fun.

We created a measurement called a BG, which is the distance of one Brogan Graham somersault. We had him do 26.2 somersaults, to mark off a “BG Marathon.†I realize that BG is superhuman in many ways but I honestly thought he might die, either from somersaults or from laughing so hard.

We did partner relays, then partner races, and we kept finding new partners to race against (very social). Wheelbarrows, piggy-back rides, Spider-Man walk, skipping, and all-out sprinting filled out our morning.

We finished with some push-ups, sit-ups, and air squats – 26.2 of each.

The bonus was a somersault race for a burrito. The first to complete 26.2 somersaults actually took home a burrito. Steve…it’s a chicken burrito from Boloco, hope you enjoyed your breakfast!!

I did not participate in the somersault race because I was already feeling a bit woozy and lightheaded. Somebody (me) needs more high-intensity work. As a bonus here is a picture of me in my shiny new dirt-covered BAA 5k shirt (the blue and yellow) racing the guy in the gray shirt and looking like he stole my bacon.

DnDCgAh.jpg?1

After the workout Ska and I trotted back to our cars (I could manage nothing more than a trot). On the way we passed the medical tent where the gf was volunteering, which was coincidental and nice to see her before leaving her to her work and putzing my way back to my car.

After that I met up with maigrey, who was in town to watch her sister run, and we joined the NP folks at mile 18 to cheer everyone on in the cold and rain. It was amazing. The Boston Marathon is a special and wonderful event that will always have a place in my heart. Everyone along the route was not just cheering because it was polite - we all were truly impressed and awed by those running and wanted success for all. It is 26.2 miles of loving across eight cities and towns. I could wax poetic far more about the event but this post is long enough as it is.

Great first week!  How did the lifting and mobility go?

Of course you ask about the stuff that didn't go as much! Lifting I intentionally did not do in favor of focusing on running before the race, gotta return to it this week. Mobility was so-so. I did not track but was okay at stretching after runs and even did my PT exercises (which I am very happy I did).

OHAI!!! It makes my heart go pitter pat to see you all runnings and shizz!!!

I love your goal of being ON NF, that's kinda my goal too- I've been too far away for far too long!

I heart ya lots and STILL have my clock running...as if I'd EVER do anything to make it reset!!

Really looking forward to this challenge

Yep, they definitely did get that amusing face picture of you! Thanks for race cheering with me!

Oh hey.  You have a thread.  Guess I should follow it or something since now our schedules never line up.  (I'm sure you're glad to be able to avoid my ranting.)

I would accept ranting if it meant GETTING TO EAT MY CUPCAKE.

Sounds like a wonderful time. So glad you got to enjoy it.

It was an amazing time. Nothing beats Marathon Monday. Nothing.

Dude, that guy you were racing totally stole your bacon.

He told me so.

Ran all the way down here to tell me.

I'm surprised he didn't get there earlier - he was fast.

Week #2 went pretty well again! And it was my FIRST EVER FULL WEEK OF NOVEMBER PROJECT!! I had never done that before (well obviously because I had never been to Destination Deck). It isn't going to be a regular thing but it makes me very happy to have done that.

Same mileage as the first week, plus stairs on Wednesday ("Sport").
