Awakening the Phoenix

 

Hello! My name is Kat and this is my first challenge. I've been wanting to join these challenges for awhile (a year?) now but have been too nervous. So really, my first challenge was even making this post.

 

I'm a nerdy craft-person who likes to sew, cosplay, roleplay and draw. I love fantasy but my real love is scifi. Talk to me about space, Mass Effect, Star Trek, KSP, SpaceX, black holes; I'm in. I'm starting Environmental Sciences at college later this year (My love of space starts with the Earth). I love HabitRPG and have been using that for 5 months or so now to build some good habits. Now I'm using the challenge forums for that final push & accountability!

 

I'm very interested in paleo, and have been ovo-pesco vegetarian for 12 years now, except for the last 3 years where I have started eating chicken on occasion. I'm a short, thin type of human who wants to become fit and strong.

 

Onto why I'm here...

 

The Big Quest

  • To get stronger and more flexible by building healthy, lasting habits - to be reborn as the strong, powerful, flaming bird I know I am
  • And meanwhile, train to join the druids
  • Specifics:
    • Build a healthy workout routine I will continue for much longer than the span of this challenge​
    • Get my butt lower and further back when doing squats
    • Touch my toes with straight legs with no pain
    • Lift heavy things without being afraid I'll hurt myself
    • Learn and catalogue paleo meal options I can turn to when hungry
    • Become mindful and perceptive of the world around me - listen to the rain, the birds, the wind
    • Breathe deep

 

The Steps

  1. I will do my stretches routine 6 days a week (or more) - spread those wings
  2. I will do my workout routine 2 days a week (or more) - no more excuses; feel the burn
  3. I will have a 100% Paleo breakfast 5 days a week (or more) - easy peasy; my baby steps towards a more paleo life

 

 

Side Quests

  • Practice guitar for at least 15 minute sessions, 3 days a week
  • 30x30 challenge - 30 minutes of enjoying nature each day in May

 

 

Weekly Grading

Monday --> Sunday

  1. Stretches:   _/6
    A+: 7, A: 6, B: 5, C+: 4, C: 3-2. C-:1-0
  2. Workout:     _/2
    A+: 3-4, A: 2, C+: 1, C-:0
  3. Paleo:          _/5
    A+: 6-7, A: 5, B: 4, C+: 3, C: 2, C-: 1-0
  4. 15m Guitar: _/3
    A+: 4-7, A: 3, B: 3 short practices, C+: 2, C: 2 short, C-: 1-0

Monthly Grading for May: 30x30 (__/30)

A+: 31, A: 30, B: 29-25, C-: Less than 25

 

 

Grading will be done each Sunday.

Thank you very much! I appreciate you stopping by! Also, thanks for reminding me about those egg/banana "pancakes". I've made them in the past with cinnamon+sunbutter, so good! That'll be breakfast tomorrow, with coconut milk and crushed almonds maybe. 

Today's breakdown. Egg/eggplant/onion/avocado hash for breakfast, with honeydew slices.

Guitar practice complete, currently working on "Song of the Lonely Mountain" (Maybe I'll record a video of me playing it if it sounds someone reasonable by the end of the challenge. Oh god... no promises here folks.)

Just finished 15 minutes of stretches (I do Staci's cooldown stretches from the NF Academy!).

Workouts are planned for Friday and Sunday this week. Looking good so far!!

Valuable mini-challenge questions to think about.
 

  • Is your overall quest achievable (over a short or long period of time)?  Is it reasonable?

Yes! Long term it is very reasonable that I will see results from my diet, workouts and stretching.

  • Do your 3 quests all build towards your main quest in little ways, or are you taking on too much? Do your quests have sub-quests or is it just one thing to focus on?

My 3 quests are fairly "small" to me because:

I was already doing stretches every day for 2 months, just had a week off for dental recovery

I'm more than capable of doing my workouts, just never slot the time in because I don't have enough accountability

I have been 50%ing the Paleo breakfast thing for half a year or so now

  • Are your main goals realistic? Can you scale them to smaller steps to fit your life better, even if it will make it take a little longer to achieve them?

Yes. Nothing too crazy yet! Everything I want to do can already fit into my weekly schedule with very little wiggling.

  • Are your goals able to be measured and tracked?  What will you use to track them?

Yes, and I'm keeping track in the same Google Doc I use for scheduling my life, so I always have it open.

  • How are you grading your goals?  Are they pass/fail (“every dayâ€, “not even once over the six weeksâ€)?  Is there a reward for the effort, or are you only grading yourself on whether or not you “lose the weight†or “run the distanceâ€?

Each goal has a possibility to get A+ if I do even BETTER than I set out to do. I know that anything I do during these six weeks will contribute to my goals and that is my reward!

  • What is your plan for continuing/altering/grading those goals if you become ill or injured?

All three could be adjusted to allow for healing time without altogether stopping momentum. (Less intense workouts/stretches)

  • Did you take into consideration any special occasions (Labour Day, Independence Day, birthdays, anniversaries, etc) that may occur during the challenge?  What modifications do you need to build into your goals for those?

Starting a single 2-month prereq college class in May which hopefully shouldn't get in the way of my goals. I hope to have healthy habits starting to build before that date.

  • Do any of your main goals conflict with each other? Will one goal make it hard to do another?

No, they in fact build off eachother, as my stretches routine is the same as my cooldown routine for workouts!

  • Do you already have the time in your schedule to actually complete the goals you’ve set?  If not, what are you planning to do to make time for them?

Yes, I have the time for these goals already, thankfully. Only internet time and social time are being sacrificed, which I can make do with.

  • Are you trying to build multiple habits, or is all your energy focused on your main quest?

Trying to build four habits at once here. I'm partway through building some of them already, however!

Day 2: Breakfast was an orange... bit of a sad excuse for a breakfast, but paleo! Workout done (For my future reference reading this: Today's workout was really challenging. Couldn't even do second set of most things.) Stretches done. Guitar practice DONE. BAM. Day 2 success.

Day 3: Intentionally ate a piece of bread with breakfast because I had to stuff myself before roleplaying. Rest of the day went as planned and guitar practice #3 complete!

Day 4: Last day of this week (Started the challenge a bit late), paleo breakfast success (banana with yogurt, pumpkin seeds and almonds) home from work and about to get workout #2 done. Let's do this.

Day 4 edit: Workout done, and I split my workout into 2 different routines so I can do different things on my 2 workout days.

Great job on Week 1!

I had some of those paleo pancakes the other day, mmmmm!

I make mine with ground flaxseed mixed in, to give them more substance, and then of course cinnamon and butter!! If I am feeling lively, I will mix in some coconut or diced apples (makes a mess when cooking).

Now lets get to work on week 2 shall we?!

Oooh I gotta try them with apples inside!! Maybe blueberries too! I think we have some in the freezer. I need to get more bananas ASAP though.

I got the recipe from here: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/shepherds-pie/#axzz3Xsnjcuz6There are no yams in there, though. The alternative for potatos is cauliflower, in this case. Although, I guess you could just as well use the yams instead.

Okay! Quick run down of the week so far. Everything has been going well.

 

Mon: Breakfast âˆš Stretches √

Thurs: Breakfast √ Guitar √ Stretches before bed tonight!

Got some Guitaring to make up later this week but that should be easy.

 

Also, I planted a tree at a volunteer Earth Day event yesterday with my boyfriend which was awesome!!!

A new challenger appears: Nature

 

Starting May 1st I'm adding the David Suzuki 30x30 Challenge to my plan. 30 minutes of enjoying nature each day in May. I've got plans for frisbee with friends, beach trips, mountain climbing and possibly a long bike ride. 

 

As for the rest of the challenge - yesterday was a bit of a "fail" day so I will be picking up from here! Today is a workout day and then tonight we're having a Kerbal Space Program LAN party to celebrate the 1.0 release! Yippee!!

Nice days

  • Read outside (The Name of the Wind)
  • Draw outside
  • Yoga with my boyfriend
  • Eat breakfast outside
  • Frisbee, badminton
  • Destination picnic
  • Watch the sunset
  • Stargazing

Cloudy days

  • Forest walk
  • Walk around the neighbourhood and smell flowers

Yucky days

  • Listen to the rain
  • Pick some herbs from the garden for tea (Lemon balm)
  • Decorate my room with plants (Lilacs, lavender, etc from backyard)
  • Dance in the rain with boyfriend (Wear sandals, you can't stand it when your shoes get wet)

Congratulations on leveling up! I love your nature goal. I had a similar (but more modest goal) last spring...I spent a few minutes outside most mornings. Usually I would either have my coffee out on my patio or drag my yoga mat out there (the neighbors can't see). It was wonderful...I should start again :-)

 

Thank you!! I love morning walks, too. There's something special about the way the sun feels when it first comes up. I'm hoping to do yoga outside too!! Sounds so fun! I hope you start up again :)

Two fantastic 30x30 (Get out in Nature Challenge) days to report. Last night my boyfriend helped convince me to go outside for midnight yoga + stargazing even though it was kinda cold, I was PMSing like crazy and was dealing with major cramps. It was lots of fun and an awesome experience, my first really memorable 30x30 day. Then today in the morning, we went for a forest run (2 laps, maybe about 20 mins of running, way more than I've done in the last year!) and then did yoga outdoors again at this awesome field on the river. I felt like I really understood what the 30x30 challenge is about the last two days. They were really special!!!

 

In other news, school just started up and I'm feeling stressed about schedules changing, bus trips taking a lot of time, booking too many things at once etc. Hoping to become stronger and better at dealing with this ASAP. I figure stress management is a skill you can build just like muscles.
