Sarah - whole life fitness

5/17 - Ok food day. No snacking, actually. Anyway, did my hour of spiritual study and will get to my meditation, keep my TV watching limit, and in bed by 11. Although I didn't get to any physical health goals, I did write two blog posts for the festival website. Got too tired to finish the second one - can only focus for so long. Will have to work on it another day.

Oh, and there is no question that Hathor does not want kitty siblings. My friend brought over four six-week old kittens to see if any of them could be friends with Hathor. Hathor objected a great deal. Hissing and growling and being, in general, a raging lunatic. The kittens were adorable, though, and I got to have dinner with my friends. Hathor is doing better now. Until I have to put her flea medication on...

5/18 - Boy do I feel kind of silly. So my body weight exercises were actually getting more difficult for me and I couldn't figure out why. See, I bought three sets of weights - 3 lbs, 5 lbs, and 8 lbs. I only use 2 of the sets, and I mixed up which ones. So, instead of using the 3 lb ones, I was using the 5 lb ones. Derp. Now I know! Anyway, it's the first time since the very beginning that I did all three sets of 10 for all my body weight exercises! Aside from figuring out the mix-up with the weights, I also did the body weight exercises as soon as I got home, instead of after my walk. It's way too hot to walk right now, so I'll do that later, closer to dusk, and I didn't want to wait to do the body weight exercises after the walk because then it will be late and I'll just want to decompress, not exercise. Anyway, since I wasn't wiped out from the walk, I was not totally obliterated after the body weight workout. Spacing it out like this might just work for me.

Got my walk in. Found a mostly shaded route to the pond and it was breezy, so pretty nice after all. Finally got to eat some raw green beans - I was so enamored of the carrots and celery with hummus that my last bag went bad before I even opened it. And strangely, my cat wants them. She ate a piece and gnawed on pieces of another. Weird. Frankly, they are awesome. So good, it is a shame to spoil them with hummus. Next time I won't bother.

Food tracking:

Two Moms in the Raw Goldenberry granola bar

DD medium iced coffee with skim milk and splenda

McDonald's Double cheeseburger

20 oz water

Mini Snickers bar and a handful of organic almonds

48 oz diet blueberry iced tea

Green beans and hummus, chicken tender wrap (3 chicken tenders, shredded cheese, organic spinach, and ranch dressing - this time I remembered to keep the dressing light!)

Glass of red wine

5/20 - I hurt. My back hurts, and I think I have an obstruction somewhere in my esophagus. I can feel it when I eat or drink. It's not blocking things from going down (or my breathing), but it hurts. It started Monday when I was green beans, but since it's not going away, I will probably need to see my doctor. I had gastric bypass years ago, and I don't want a problem since it could be related. I don't know if the back ache is related to the blockage, but since I don't want to make it worse, I am going to stick to just walking until I feel better.

Since I'm all hurty, and tired from not sleeping well (slept on the couch since sleeping in bed hurts my back), I was all, just blah tonight when I got home, but then a client called at 7pm (which is like, emergency only time to call me), so that got my blood going and I had a good walk in, and hopefully jumped on the work stuff fast enough to impress the client.

EDIT: So, I did not have a great night after posting this. The pain got bad again, and I got restless, and just pretty much said, Fuck it.

Food tracking:

Two Moms goldenberry bar, DD medium iced coffee with skim milk and splenda

DD medium iced coffee with skim milk and splenda

2 slices Mediterranean pizza (chicken, artichoke, feta, and olives)

32 oz die blueberry iced tea

1 slice Mediterranean pizza, red wine

Oooohhh - hope you feel better soon and that they can diagnose what's up!!

Some sort of Jedi .....

We are better than we know, if we can be made to see it, [then] for the rest of our lives, we'll be unwilling to settle for less.

Current Challenge: Coming soon .....

5/22 - I'll be heading out for my walk in a bit, but I had a really shitty day at the doctor. It has nothing to do with the diagnosis for the obstruction - could simply be irritation from acid reflux (which has never bothered me, but I guess that could still be it), or it could be an obstruction (which I'll find out on Tuesday) - but with the conversation I had with the specialist. I have to put it out there because it really, really upset me.

*talking about my medical history, exercise, and gastric bypass*

Doctor: How much did you lose?

Me: 170, but I gained back a lot, so 80 lbs total.

Doctor: So you gained 100 lbs.

Me: (So the 80 lbs I've kept off don't count at all?)

Doctor: What do you know about counting calories and portion control?

Me: *blinkblink* I, uh, well... uh. I know about it. I mean, I am careful to eat single portions. (I started seeing nutritionists when I was in second grade!)

Doctor: You know a single scoop of ice cream can undo all that exercise you do.

Me: *binkblink* (I don't even eat ice cream!)

Doctor: You ever have a McDonald's milk shake?

Me: Uh, well, I don't anymore. The sugar bothers my stomach.

Doctor: Oh, well, you know. An example. One of those means you have to walk 14 miles. You need to start tracking everything you eat.

Me: Well, I do. 4 times a week.

Doctor: No, every day, so you know how much you're eating.

Me: *silence*

So, this really bummed me out because it basically seemed like everything I've been doing amounts to nothing. Now, I know that's not the case, but it made me feel pretty shitty. Like, there was no consideration of the fact that after last challenge, when I only lost 2 lbs, I totally changed how I'm eating - no junk food (not even "healthy" junk food like organic chips), I've cut way back on snacking, etc. And it made a difference - I made the change between challenges, and I'd lost 9 lbs last time I weighed myself. He even criticized my coffee because I take skim milk in it (which I changed from cream years ago because I wanted to cut back on the calories). Also, anyone who's considered or been through weight-loss surgery knows that his question regarding my knowledge of portion control and calorie intake is kind of idiotic - you have to show *years* of attempts to lose weight (and especially with medical guidance) with no success. Anyway, it just dredged up some really awful feelings I haven't felt in a really long time. A really long time. I'm glad he's not my PCP; my PCP is awesome. And I know that doctors have to talk about weight - it would be irresponsible not to. It just seemed wrong that he didn't even try to find out what I already do to be healthy.

Food tracking (irony much?):

Special K bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, 8 oz diet blueberry iced tea

DD medium iced coffee with skim milk and splenda

Amy's Light and Lean Polento with Swiss Chard

Raw pumpkin seed bar

Chicken tender wrap (3 chicken tenders, cheese, ranch dressing, spinach)

20 oz diet blueberry iced tea

[so, I'm going to rant a bit for you here]

Oh, my, goodness, that is an awful, horrible bedside manner.  I mean, I guess that kind of debbie downer attitude helps encourage some people, but you would think your specialist would have a little more insight into how YOU respond to criticism.

I saw in the Women's forums that you were told you were going to develop diabetes, so I wanted to tell you a quick story. . . My dad was always overweight and developed diabetes like 10 years ago. With diet and exercise, he was able to be completely medication free. Yeah, he still HAD diabetes, but the worst thing he dealt with were blood sugar checks.

Hope your walk is better than the rest of your day!

It was the first time I saw this doctor, so he really didn't know much about me. It doesn't excuse that he didn't know how I'd react, but at least he wasn't treating me in a way he *knew* would upset me.

Thank you for that. A lot of people in my family have diabetes. It's been a fear of mine, but I was tested for it last year (a reason I hadn't gone to the doctors for a long time before that) and everything's good. I have a huge fear of needles, which is the main reason I dread having it. I just thought it was insensitive - let's say cancer ran in family instead. Would he have said that I would get cancer? I doubt it.

Oh, and my walk was great. :)

I hate that you had to go through that. *likes post as a show of solidarity, not as an approval of what doc said*

I've had a few doctors like that and anymore I just stop going to them. I hope he was able to give you some direction with your pressing issue, the back pain and the obstruction you had. But still, what a jerk!

Also @LadyShello, that is one of my favorite insults. Douchecanoe. It always confuses people.

Week 5 Summary:

Physical health: +1 Dex, +2 Sta, +1 Str, +1 Con (12 parts each week; 56 total)

  • Walk 30 minutes 3/week  - Success!
  • Belly dance 2/week - 0/2 - Because I was trying to keep from further aggravating a potential injury, I'm not going to count this against my success rate.
  • Bodyweight exercises 3/week - 1/3 - Same as above. Good news is that I think it's my mattress, not an injury, so I can go ahead and pick this up again between challenges.
  • Food tracking 4/week - Success! +1

Spiritual health: +3 Wis, +2 Cha (7 parts each week; 35 total)

  • Meditate 5/week - Success!
  • Work on spiritual class material for 1 hour 2/week - Success!

Mental health: +2 Con, +1 Wis, +1 Sta, +1 Cha (9 parts each week; 45 total)

  • Limit TV watching to 2 hrs on 4/5 week nights, and no later than 10pm - 2/4
  • Go to bed no later than 11pm on weekdays - 3/5

Challenge Summary:

Physical Health - At 97%, I get full credit! +1 Dex, +2 Sta, +1 Str, +1 Con

Spiritual Health - At 92%, I am giving myself partial credit. +2 Wis, +2 Cha

Mental Health - At 84%, I am giving myself half credit. +1 Con, +1 Wis, +.5 Sta

Overall, I need to make sure to do the other parts of my Physical Health goals - weight training and dancing. Walking is the easiest goal for me to hit, but that is only part of it. For Spiritual Health, I may need to look at another time to do my meditation. It gets late and I forget or just don't do it. So, that is something I will need to look at between challenges. Although Mental Health showed the worst, I don't feel like it's my weakest area. I had some bad days in the last week, and also a mixed up schedule.

Great job on the challenge!!  I find it hard to identify the optimal time for meditation and often feel like I'm falling asleep if I do it too late in the day.  Good luck with planning on the off week, and I look forward to what you come up with for June!!
