Doc resumes his journey

So I fell of the wagon on my first challenge, but I've gotten back in the weight room and back to challenging myself.

My first goal is all about consistency. I just finished a few sessions with a trainer learning the Olumpic lifts and need to keep working at them to build the proper movement patterns to memory before I start adding much weight.

A- 3x per week

C- 2x per week

D-1x per week

F- 0x per week

My second goal is focused on strength. I was making good strides on my Strong Lifts but due to the aforementioned falling of the wagon I am basically starting over. So this time around I'm going to use Starting Strength because it has the clean. I will also add in some light weight snatch practice and work on pull ups until I can do them without resistance bands helping. I will update if I figure out a way to grade this

A-

B-

C-

D-

F-

My third goal is about cutting body fat percentage. Currently I'm sitting at 35% and my long term goal is 14%. Nutrition will be the biggest factor here, but I'm adding some HIIT sessions to the end of my lifting days to help expedite the process. I'm not completely sure what a realistic expectation for this is so I'll adjust the percentage numbers after I get a better idea.

A- 10%

B- 8%

C- 5%

D- 3%

F- <3%

My non fitness goal is to improve my standing at work to set myself up for promotion or viability for a change in job. I work security and have spoken to my Regional Manager about what I can do to better myself at work. I now have a Massive binder for the in-house CPO program. It's daunting to look at but I want to read it by the end of the challenge so I can take the next step in the company.

A- Finish

F- Don't finish

Hey, nice looking goals there!

One piece of constructive criticism that you're more than free to ignore - since fat loss can be difficult to directly control, maybe consider making your goal about completing the actions that you know will ultimately result in fat loss? IE. Goal to eat within such and such guidelines, and/or to complete x HIIT sessions per week, etc. Might make it easier to track in the challenge format.

Good luck with it all though! Here's to getting back on that damnable wagon XD

Ehh... you're probably right, but I tend to do things the hard way I suppose.  We'll see how it goes this go round and I'll adjust fire as needed next challenge.

welcome back Doc.  I hope to see more of you this challenge :D

You might notice that someone has added a tag to your post.  This is not to box you into a corner but rather because your goals or lifestyle have links to the guild you've been tagged and we'd like to bring you to the attention of one of their guild ambassadors. These ambassadors will be able to offer you advice, encouragement and support on your goals.  You don't even have to wait around for them to come introduce themselves to you, you are more than welcome to pop into the Warriors' board and introduce yourself to the guildies there. I am also around to answer any questions that you might have so do not hesitate to PM me.

Good Luck with your challenge

So when I am famous you can be my body guard? Lol

Great goals and glad to see you trying again. Key here is to post good or bad and we will hold you accountable.

My two cents on your goals, the strength goal I think if you keep track of max lifts now and, then what they are at end of challenge you will know if you pushed yourself enough to deserve and A or a B. Give yourself a C if you increased but you could have done better but increased. D's and F's are not acceptable.

You can grade yourself weekly on the BF% goal. What did you do that week to achieve?

Good luck and I will keep my eye on my fellow Iowan.

Well this week I took my proposed lifting plan out for a test run and need to make some adjustments.

  1. For my front squat I need to work on my mobility so I can get my elbows higher in the rack position.  Sure I was able to manage the set and rep scheme but my shoulders, wrists and elbows weren't happy with that position so I'll need to work on that before I try to add weight.
  2. My snatch...  I don't want to talk about it, my ego is still crying.  Needless to say I have identified deficiencies and in case it shocks anyone, they are form related.  I'm have a hell of a time with the catch.  I have trouble landing solidly in the final position so I'm going to remove from the program as a main lift and focus on nailing the technique with light weight.  I'll start with the hang snatch and focus on the second half of the lift until I am comfortable with it then start doing the full lift at light weight until comfortable before finally I feel confident enough to start adding weight
  3. For the clean, I can manage it but it feels like I am using brute force rather than proper technique.  While this lift isn't as ugly as the snatch was for me, I'm still going to not worry about adding weight until I am more confident in my technique.  The last thing I want to do is progress in weight for the sake of my ego until I hit the wall where brute force stops working because then I'd not only have to deload but would have a bunch of bad habits to unlearn.

Overall its a work in progress and I'd rather take my time to get the lifts right the first time so I don't injure myself or form bad habits.  Patience isn't really my strong suit these days but with discipline I will get it done.

Yay for form correction!  Good luck with your goals, Doc! I'm glad you were able to take your Almost-SL plan for a spin, that's always helpful.  I'm a noob when it comes to lifting, myself, so I'm always a little in awe of people actively pursuing heavy things.  Good for you!

Good luck in the challenge, I look forward to your updates!

Things went pretty good at the gym today, gotta remind myself that it's not a race to get back to my pre-hiatus lift numbers, especially with squats and deadlifts, so I should keep the increment jumps down so I don't stall out or hurt myself.

Shoulder felt a little wonky on overhead press today, probably because the racks were all full when I started so I did my pull ups first, but I need to keep an eye one that. Haven't had shoulder issues in almost 10 years but that one used to be prone to subluxation at unfortunate times and that shit hurts.

Still need to plan out my HIIT sessions so I can start doing them. Sure I could make them up on the fly but I'd rather have them be productive for more than just their cardio benefit.

Do you plan to make your HIIT sessions cardio only or with bodyweight exercises? Or completely different? I used to follow something a bit like this for a while. And used an app as a timer, although the annoying sounds you often get to set as an alarm between sets might not make you the most popular person in a gym. (I didn't see that one back when I did this, but 'Seconds' looks pretty neat, too.)

Mostly I am curious about your life side quest to be honest though. I am sure you can manage (not just the reading part). Crossing my fingers for you.

I've got a couple different HIIT resources that use bodyweight and weights, also I have a heavy bag at home and am looking for a good hill that I can sprint up. I need to sit down the next couple days and pour over them to decide what looks most beneficial to my goals.

I have the gymboss app and it's worked well in the past, I have headphones that do a good job of staying secure so I don't have to worry about annoying fellow gym goers.

So I have an interview Friday for a CPO position, if that goes well then I will revise my life goal.  I still need to read that binder but I will figure something out.  If I get the job but don't hear I got it until after the challenge starts, well that would feel like cheating so I will still revise my goal.

The more I look at things and think about my goals the less I'm liking the program I wrote.  Not that it doesn't accomplish what I want it to but why should I try to pull something out of my ass when there is a well established routine that  does essentially the same thing.  With that said, when the challenge starts I'm going to use the Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength.  It doesn't use the squat variations that I had but I'd rather focus on improving my foundation.  I will start with the power clean alternating with deadlifts rather than doing deadlifts 3x a week, which he reccomendsyou do after a couple of weeks anyways, and will keep my pull ups as an every day thing while I work to get my first free hanging pull up.  The only other tweaks will be keeping my proposed snatch practice and my HIIT workouts.

Semper Gumby. remember the 6 Ps Piss Poor Planning Prevents Proper Performance. As time goes on change becomes a necessity at times. I like the change to focus on foundation work which is key when you get into Olympic lifts.
