New Recruit, First Challenge

Recommended Posts

Hi,

This is my first 6 week challenge. I haven't quite set my goals yet, but wanted to get this post in to make sure I committed to it. I'll come back and edit this when I've got them set.

Here is my intro post : http://rebellion.nerdfitness.com/index.php?/topic/65381-just-skinnbones/

Basically to sum up, my long term goal is to gain about 20 Kg over the next 18 months and actually increase my body fat %.

Main Quest : Gain 20Kg (over 18 months) and be able to complete a full hour of cardio (hopefully sooner)

Goals:

  • Complete advanced bodyweight programme - at least 3 pull ups and chin ups (edited down from 10 - gotta be realistic ...). +3 STR, +3 STA
  • Finish NHS Choices Couch to 5k Training program on Cardio Days. +3 DEX
  • Life Goal: Tidy and complete laminate floor in the house (first step to getting some exercise space in the garage) +1 WIS
Scoring :
  • C=1, B=2, A=3, A+ = More
  • Pass / Fail
  • Pass / Fail
1st edit: had a bit of a shock on first attempt of advanced bodyweight - can't even do 3 pull ups - challenge target updated accordingly!

careful that you don't do too much cardio otherwise you're gonna have trouble putting on that weight ;)

You might notice that someone has added a tag to your post.  This is not to box you into a corner but rather because your goals or lifestyle have links to the guild you've been tagged and we'd like to bring you to the attention of one of their guild ambassadors. These ambassadors will be able to offer you advice, encouragement and support on your goals.  You don't even have to wait around for them to come introduce themselves to you, you are more than welcome to pop into the Rangers' board and introduce yourself to the guildies there. I am also around to answer any questions that you might have so do not hesitate to PM me.

Good Luck with your challenge

Hey man,

I like your challenge goals for this first 6 weeks. I think doing the body weight is a decent place to start. We have the same issue with protein btw. Your questions and their answers were helpful. My metabolism is through the roof, and if I'm not exercising I will definitely forget meals. Let me know if you settle on a meal plan that helps add weight while still healthy! 2300 is good, that's about my goal as well. LOTS OF MEAT.

If you're interested in gaining mass, but never weight-lifted before, might I suggest strong-lifts 5x5. It's a really straightforward program for beginners that I am doing myself. I wouldn't suggest switching your plan, unless you'd really like to give it a shot and stick with it. However, I think it may be a good fit for you perhaps next challenge. I agree with Blaidd, careful of the cardio. With guys like us, we are basically doing cardio by just thinking harder. Don't cut it out, but I wouldn't make it your focus. Anyway, I hope you're doing well.

Thanks for the input . Nice to hear from someone in the same boat.

I have had a bit of a read of the stronglifts 5x5 page. I was thinking exactly what you have suggested ( which is always pleasing ) I think I will do their program possibly on the next challenge , or maybe the one after . Possibly with GOMAD.

For now I'm sticking with the bodyweight program, give my muscles a chance to get a bit stronger and used to working before I go too crazy on the intensity.

Hi and welcome! I'm in the same place trying to gain. I've made some progress with tracking food and body weight training. Although I've always hated running, I would like to do the couch to 5k someday. I'm too afraid of any cardio right now, though.  It's weird, but it is hard to get enough food sometimes. Before I started keeping track, I had no idea how little I ate. My hubby is a computer guy and he gets sucked into his projects too. Is there any way you can set an alarm or some kind of alert for you to take a break and eat while you're working? I know you want to finish ______, but you have to eat ;)

Thanks for ypur reply. I was setting alarm to go home for a while , and that did help so this could be a good idea, cheers .

I wouldn't be too afraid of the couch to 5k for calories . The first few weeks at least (we started week 4 last night) are pretty easy and you can just follow up with some fruit or something, to get your calories back. You're not running too hard, just a light jog.

Update , on 5K progress.

We actually did the Color Run this weekend - WOOT. Did it with the kids though, so more of a Color Walk.  Went well though, and me and the missus both felt it was well within our comfort zone. Accepted : Running the whole course is a different kettle of fish, and that is what my challenge this cycle is working towards, but this was a really good confidence boost at the start.

Kids (4 & 7) seemed to enjoy themselves too, which is good and great to be starting to make exercise and outdoor activities a part of life for them too.

Awesome!  I've always wanted to do the Color Run, it doesn't get to Alaska very often, though, and I'm not sure how to do about doing it ourselves.  I'm glad the kids enjoyed themselves, too!  Great update!

Today I did my workout again. Felt like I worked hard which is affirming but I seemed to struggle.

I'm working on elbows in pushups and really finding I'm unbalanced , and couldn't seem to do as well on inverted rows as last time .

So not feeling too great about progress, but I need to be realistic and just suck it up. I'm sure I'll see progress eventually .

Might appreciate some advice on how to help my weaker arm catch up, so to speak.

Completed startbodyweight work out again today.

So far I've done all days as planned . But had to modify some of them today as I have quite a sore lower back and may have pulled some muscles in my arms. I'm hoping this will count as rest for my sore muscles, but avoid missing a day and not set me back.

Feeling pretty under pressure now.  It's crazy, that I've decided to get healthy and fit for my own benefit, but that is actually becoming a source of stress ...

Haven't been able to do a full intensity workout for a whole week now, as my muscle pain just isn't improving.  Yesterday had a bit of a work pressure, and ended up skipping lunch - finishing the day almost 1000 calories under, but just not feeling hungry.

I can see I've got a long road ahead of me before I'll start seeing any real progress in all this, especially if I keep missing days - this is affecting my motivation.

Don't stress about it. This is a long term goal you're working on. You will have ups and downs. I've had more downs than ups.   I've read that unevenness is pretty common even among people who are in good shape and have been working out for years. You'll get there.  I'm saying this out of love and experience, you really have to eat.   Sorry if you already know this, but when you work out, you are actually slightly damaging your tiny muscle fibers. You need enough protein and food in general so your body can repair these fibers. When they repair, they are stronger. You could maybe try slow cooker meals so it doesn't take much effort to cook. I've also done variations of this shake http://www.weightgainnetwork.com/weight-gain-supplements/the-best-mass-gainer-my-homemade-recipe-for-gaining-weight.php I would recommend whole milk though. A few days last week, I actually got enough food and I felt so much better. I know you can do this, it just takes some work and planning ahead. Do you do any kind of meal plan or just grab whatever?

Thanks for the reply. At present I tend to just grab whatever although some meals at home are planned. Definitely something to work on, and youre right this is a going to take a while ...

I'll have to take a go at thay shake as well, although I don't normally like avocado, it might be alright mushed up with all that.

Did startbodyweight routine again today with a bjt more intensity and got thriugh it quicker . Not makijg progress on all tjr exercises but ive sort of had a week off so I still feel positive . Still finding im quite unbalanced on pushups and eccentric pullups (leaning to one side) so I'll investigate that for my 'library mini'.

Quick update. C25k is going well we've finished week 7 and did the 25 minute run yesterday despite feeling pretty rough and the hit weather so felt pretty good about that.

I'm still a bit despondent about my workout progressions though. I think I've been doing pushups a little wrong my whole life which is why moving up to 'elbows in' is so difficult .

Weight also going well although over 68kg now .

Laminate flooring ZERO

Lol what? Laminate flooring?? Perhaps I've missed something... I am almost at 68 kg myself, which would be a great goal to hit in the coming week or two. And yes, keep up the food intake (as long as it's good protein and carbs you're putting in). I find pasta, chicken, and eggs are cheap, time efficient, and healthy staples for me. Keep up the good work!!
