Main Quest
Prepare for a 99 miler on August 8-9.

News Year's Resolutions
Keep Calm & Play

Background

Definitely time to get ready for the ultra.  So long runs and daily running really help that.  I also want to keep an eye on what I eat and really like how primal eating works for me.  I want to keep up the lifting and bodyweight.  And of all the bodyweight, the handstand I really want so a specific goal for that.

Goals

YcOh4cu.pngAttack Food Soldiers

1) Made smart primal choices every day +5 CON

2) Run every day (40 days) +3 STA

3) Run long once a week +3 STA

4) Lift heavy once a week +2 STR

5) Do 200 minutes of handstand during the challenge +1 CHA

6) Do 20 bodyweight reps every day (5 seconds of non-handstand static hold counts as 1 rep) +1 WIS

Thanks, and you should.  I play hyperstone heist and turtles in time a couple times a month with the kids.

OMG Where did you find the Donatellos!

Because of course they kill off my favorite turtle in the comics -.-

I am disassembling (reverse engineering) the genesis game TMNT The Hyperstone Heist and they are some of the sprites I have extracted from the game :)

Practiced some non-wall handstands outside and it definitely showed me how much a crutch that wall is.

"Practiced some non-wall handstands outside and it definitely showed me how much a crutch that wall is." No doubt, the placebo effect is really strong. If we think just having the wall there makes things easier, than without it, you may well feel like you're worse off than you really are.

I like the goals a lot. Really spread out, but not too ambitious as to not be achievable.

So yesterday's 5k went great!  23:18, a 30 second PR from a few weeks ago on a training run and over a minute PR from last year.  Pretty happy about that.  Top 10% of age group and in top 4% overall :)

I am a huge fan of Mark Sisson and his primal version of paleo.  My biggest beef with him was his take on endurance sports.  But now he is working on a book entitled Primal Endurance that will be out at the end of the year which I am super excited about.  In the meantime, he just released a Primal Endurance podcast and I have really enjoyed it so far.

I made a spreadsheet.  Decided for the primal goal I will grade each day out of 100.  The basic score will start based on percentage primal, but I will factor in things like traveling or special occasions.  The grading might be a work in progress.

Got my lift in this morning since have a group run tonight.  Yesterday was my wife's birthday, and while I didn't eat fully primal I made some good choices out of my options when eating out :)

My mother-in-law gave me Kohl's cash and today I got some shorts (first running shorts with side zipper pockets!), some wicking underwear (on clearance!), and an awesome tmnt shirt (feels like a tech shirt, I will give it a whirl as a running shirt: http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2042470/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-surfing-tee-men.jsp).

Last night's run was great.  I went with the fast group and it was fairly warm and humid, so by the end I was keeping up with the group leaders.  The new shirt was great but given the conditions everyone was sweat soaked by the end.  Doing pretty good on the goals so far in week zero.  Tomorrow is my wife's mega turning 30 party, so need to consciously stay away from all day snaking and sneak in a quick morning workout :)

I got in 3 minutes of handstand practice yesterday, my easy run, and some bad and good food choices.  I had a piece of wife birthday cake (only one so far at least), but did abstain from the ice cream that was oh so tempting and had strawberries instead.

So the first 2 days of the challenge have been great so far.  I did my first free stand head stand yesterday kind of (I needed to wall since I kept over shooting but then could get of the wall into the head stand for 10-20 seconds at a time).  It is pretty wobbly so I really need to work on stablizing that trunk and will count it as part of my handstand training since that is my weakest area anyways.  And my handstands are going pretty well, on Monday I rocked out an almost 10 second one without touching the wall once (but most of the time I still hit the wall).

I also decided that since my primal grading will be lenient if it was based on a smart choice type stuff, then I should get bonus points for resisting old urges, so I got 2 extra bonus points yesterday, one for resisting cake and one for resisting ice cream :)

In the past 16 hours I did three 3 mile runs (one with dog, two with jogging stroller).  Nice to get out there at different times of the day.
