karinajean body weights and has a beautiful life.

Recommended Posts

things I learned last challenge:

* I need to refresh on the bodyweight stuff. running is an easy exercise for me but I *know* that I can't overcardio myself, I need strength. my body is great at building muscles, I need to help it to succeed.

* I am not very diligent at doing my -UPs practice, and if I really want to get to a pull-up in 2015 I need to crack down.

* apparently I really can exercise 2-3x a week and eat at 1800 calories (ish) and I will lose weight. that's good news for the future! I'm glad that maintenance is higher than 1800 calories.

* that thing where I kept doing tae kwon do and boxing and weapons routinely because I love them - that thing worked. I super love them still.

ONCE AGAIN I have an awkward challenge.
I'm going away for 2 weeks on the motorcycles! yay!
but happily bodyweight exercises are my friends when I'm traveling!

Goal 1: ROMANCING THE BODYWEIGHT

Girl, you need to practice your -ups.
You clearly didn't do them at all last challenge, but yet you insist they're important?
Girl, just. Girl.

3x a week bodyweight workouts. not just the -UPs, but also the BUTTS. [[<--laughing hilariously at myself over here.]]

Weeks 1 and 2 - while traveling - things like push-ups and squats and jumping jacks and handstand practice. don't sweat the full 20 min. workout concept, but do the activities.

Weeks 3 to 6 - do a full bodyweight workout, either beginning bodyweight progressions or the NF Academy bodyweight routines, 3x a week.

I know it's not popular opinion around here but running counts as bodyweight too - I know it's cardio, but you're propelling your body with just your body. that counts, totally!

2x a week running. (weeks 1 and 2 1x a week is ok.)

The thing about the running and bodyweight is that if I am structured about it, I can fit in 2-3 miles and follow it with bodyweight. it doesn't have to be 5x a week exercise. make sure you're smart about this, girl.

Goal 2: BE A REASONABLE EATER

I'm going to be on vacation for 2 weeks, and I'm traveling to The Land of Cheese and Beer. I'm not going to let the silly fact that I hit my totally arbitrary calculated goal weight freak me out. I'm going to track all the food I eat, and I'm going to be smart about meals and snacks and protein so I don't get hangry, but I'm also going to enjoy The Land of Cheese and Beer.

BUT WHEN I'M BACK.
Stick with regular deficit programming but I am permitted to eat back exercise. Instead of managing on a weekly basis to hit goal, do this daily.

Goal 3: PARTICIPATE!

every challenge I see these mini-challenges and I'm super excited by them.
every challenge I get pretty close to participating, but I never do consistently.

when I do jump in those crazy overzealous assassins have managed to hit all the points already and I'm like: um, oh, hi. I shouldn't let that stop me, I should be overzealous too!

I don't do stat points, but I will count as one of my goals participation in the mini challenges (and I really hope they work out with my vacation for the first 2 weeks!)

LIFE GOAL. HAVE A BEAUTIFUL LIFE

Honestly, I thought about taking a pass on this one. I can't even remember exactly how long the construction has gone on in my house but I'm pretty sure it's 10 weeks now. 6 weeks without a bathroom, a week of mess and quiet, and then 3 weeks (ROUGHLY? is there even any point to counting any more?) of total disarray and disruption in the kitchen and the dining room. the living room is unusable because all the things from the other rooms are in there. we have to move plastic sheeting when we want to use the stove. it's just RIDICULOUS.

but in general, this is what I want: I want to read books and garden a little (just a little, mind you) and motorcycle and plan camping trips and cook delicious foods when my CSA starts. how about I just plain have a beautiful life, and tell you about it here?

**************

I had secret big plans that weeks -2 and -1 would be good substitutes for weeks 1 and 2 in the challenge (when I'm traveling). BUT ACTUALLY I am too tired this week to do anything fancy, it turns out. fancy like exercise. I am actually at my wits end this week with the house. I am emotionally and mentally and physically exhausted.

but week -1, though, that week I can start ramping up. I'm going to start tracking everything here, as per normal habits.

Ugh. I hope your house gets under control soon.  I have no idea how you're managing to stay sane when you're basically living in a construction zone. I'd be having a nervous breakdown by now.

And hooray for cheese and beer.  The great thing to remember is that even if you over-indulge a bit, you're more than capable of buckling down and shedding any vacation weight after you're home.  Don't stress too much over enjoying the cheese and beer.

And yes.  Get all of those UPs!  I know you'll get there.  :)

You definitely already have a beautiful life.  Hectic and crazy but it's beautiful!!

Can't wait to hear about your adventures in The Land of Cheese and Beer.

you're right! it's totally hectic! I want to make sure this summer doesn't zoom past me, I want to be more deliberate about how I'm enjoying myself.

Yeap - just have a beautiful life.  And tell us.  Let's compare pics of our gardens???

ha, yes! but when I say "garden" I mean "garden bed that is around my super old house that has been neglected for possibly 20 years and which I garden 1x a year with a pickaxe. not as nice and neat as it could be. ;)

I look forward to hearing about your adventures!

yay! I look forward to having them and sharing them.

In for epic moto-trip. :)

yay! we do have a group tumblr that we all update while on the road (the 4 of us who are traveling together) - http://rainmakersny.tumblr.com/

I hear you about that reading books part. I'm trying to become a reader myself! I'm looking forward to your awesomeness!

I am a huge fan of reading, and I read a lot. here's a tip that took me a while to come to terms with: if you don't like it, you don't have to finish it. It's ok to choose another one. The key is to keep trying different types of books.

Haha I don't think anyone here is questioning the benefit of running, especially not 2-3 miles, we just question whether the boredom is worth the effort.

Enjoy the land of cheese and beer!

I have a friend who's got a streak of running for 1 mile every single day for over a year. And I went out for a quick 2.5 mile run today and i started to think that maybe that would be a good thing to do. I mean, 25 minutes (or 10 minutes for that one mile) is just long enough for your brain to get settled and start to feel itchy, you know?

last week was definitely my morose nervous breakdown week.  I absolutely hit the wall and felt like my home would never be any good and we should throw away all of our things. I'm a little better after the weekend.

OH HAI I SAVED YOU A SEAT.

For what it's worth, Al Kavadlo himself has said that running is totally a form of bodyweight training. So it counts. :)

it totally counts! yay!

week -2 recap

I had such brilliant big plans for this week! I was going to do so many things and actually get a great head start - but it turns out that I hit the wall of "my house has been disrupted for 10 weeks or whatever, I totally lost count - and MY LIFE IS TOTALLY RUINED." I mean, awesome that I lasted as long as I did, but I am just DONE. totally DONE. I thought for a moment that we would have the last of the room finished

Monday - oh, this was memorial day. we were home from our quick weekend jaunt around on the motorcycles and I exercised in the form of berserker gardening. so, this is how it happens: we have a super old house with a lot of old established non-gardens all around it. I've been tackling the gardens around the house and also some of the weedy-grassy parts right in front of the house but mostly I am able to get in a spring weeding and planting exercise, and then it goes to pot shortly after. so every year I work on the front part where I'm planting peonies (one or two every year), and a small side garden where we have an old rhododendron and a peony and some pretty irises also a boatload of crappy ground cover that WILL NOT DIE. this year I went straight for the pick-axe and dug up all the unsavory roots and planted in a new peony, worked on a rotting stump a while, dug up more crappy ground cover, freed the rhododendron from it's mummification of weeds, and planted a bunch of gladiolus bulbs, some asian lilies, and also some ranunculus (new to me this year!). I also got the lopers out and cut down a bunch of advantageous maple saplings who were getting a little ahead of themselves.

then we went to see mad max, and I loved it. a lot. I have a lot of things to say about how much I loved it and I wouldn't say there's a lot of spoilers but there are strong feelings and maybe a tiny spoiler? but nothing big? in the cut below.

ZOMG I have so many thoughts about this movie.

like: HOW AWESOME that there was no romance, because you know what I hate a lot in movies? when there's a guy who keeps saying "I'm no good for you" in words or in actions, and the heroine is all "I will redeem you with my magical LOVE POWERS." that's the pits.

tumblr_np9hwcwOU21uw1s6ho1_1280.jpg

and I LOVE SO MUCH that this was such a female-loaded plot. how lovely to see a movie with so many women in it, who were just DOING THINGS. like in real life (ok mad max is very far from real life but you know what I mean). MEN AND WOMEN WORKING TOGETHER TOWARDS A COMMON GOAL?! DOGS AND CATS SLEEPING TOGETHER?! WHAT FRESH HORRORS IS THIS! [heh.]

this blog post also. http://nospockdasgay.tumblr.com/post/119381643753/my-reaction-to-mad-max-fury-road-and-the-utter, written by a woman who also doesn't have an arm -- "The effortless manner in which this film has presented a character’s disability is incredible. I literally could not ask for anything more. It’s ubiquitous. No big deal. Her body is never a plot point. It is simply allowed to be"

so freaking unusual in the world today, not just from that perspective but also quite simply from a woman's perspective. how shameful that this is so unusual in media today that it is so surprising and refreshing when we actually SEE it.

ALSO this feminist mad max tumblr (from which I got the above images) is also my new favorite thing.

AND not to be totally shallow after all of those strongly worded comments but now I'm happy that when I describe my ideal personal style to people as "mad max librarian" they have a glimpse into the insanity of wardrobe that I desire. WIDE LEATHER BELT CORSETS AND BOOTS PLEASE. ASYMMETRICAL MILITARY STYLES THANK YOU.

Tuesday - tkd in the evening, which was surprisingly sweaty because I lead black belt forms a bunch with the first degrees. nothing else!

Wednesday - nope . plus we had the kids and still no kitchen so we had pizza out for dinner.

Thursday - tkd - belt test! my awesome eleven year old kid got to purple belt. he's so great, I'm so super excited he's stuck with it. his older brother (Sixteen) has totally decided he doesn't love the martial arts "because he doesn't learn anything from fighting 7 year olds." which pretty much is a non-answer because that's not where the learning is, etc., and really he's just coming up with excuses because he's lazy and 16, which I get. it's frustrating because he's incredibly good at tkd and sparring in particular, and it's too bad that he'll throw that away, even though he talks all the time about setting up boxing matches with his buddies. my husband asked him if he'd like to find a different kind of class with more older kids and 16 is not into that really either, because lazy. well. I've done my best with this one, and there's nothing else I can do. This is, for the record, one of the places where having a 3 parent family sucks. his mom is like: let him quit if he's not into it, and I have a very different philosophy (mostly because I believe that 16 year old boys aren't into ANYTHING except that which is directly in front of them or the path of least resistance).

WELL.

Friday - nope. I came closer to waking up on time but I still didn't. I went to a 31 bag party in the evening and had a pretty crummy dinner of a protein bar, a bunch of potato chips and some fruit, and a beer. oh well. I was still at or pretty close to calories.

Saturday! boxing day. loved it. so much working. such sweat, so box, wow. and weapons! my tweaky elbow did really really well, I hope that it's getting the rest it needs. taking last sat. off from weapons was probably really good for it.  we had big lunch and big dinner on sat., and I was way over on calories, but .... whatevs.

Sunday - I woke up so much earlier than anyone else and was like: oh perfect! let's go running! but then it was thunderstorms. booooooo. so I stayed in bed, then got up and started to deep clean the parts of the house that are done. like the 2nd floor room (the library) where they had to demo the chimney that was still hanging out in order to bring it down to the first floor - I swept and mopped and we started to move the furniture back in. mopped the dining room and cleaned out all the dusty bits from the painting and sanding and spackling. moved some furniture around. cleaned some things. helped 16 study for math finals for a looooooong time. then we went to see mad max again with the boys! y'all, it's ridiculous that I haven't been to a movie in over a year, and now I've seen mad max 2x. wtf. I mean, I loved it, but that's ridiculous.

bedtime at a much more reasonable time after some thoughtful discussions with my husband about how to sort out the house and our things so they're more reasonable. this morning I started reading the lifechanging magic of tidying up, which I got from the library, and I think I'm going to get my own copy so I can spend more time with it, and so my husband can spend more time with it. he's not as close to throwing things out (or giving them away) as I am, but he also doesn't like our cluttered cluttered life.

Most action movies, I watch and enjoy in the moment, but they lose their luster the more time I think about them after the fact. Mad Max, I like more the more I think about it after the fact. Just, love. They're coming out with comics too. :)

I'm so behind on movies right now. Maybe I should just sneak off from work tomorrow and work on catching up.

I got the Tidying Up book also. I haven't gotten far into it yet. Her ideas about doing it all at once sound really great but I'm highly prone to getting overwhelmed and giving up on stuff. I think I'm still going to have to break it down a little bit.

I REALLY wracked my brain to remember what I did on Sunday, because it didn't feel like much at all! at the time I remember feeling pissed off and like I was doing a lot, but there was no one big final conclusive result to point at.

I will be totally honest. when it was over my husband and I looked at each other like: "what the *F* was that!?" and then we remembered that it is a MAD MAX MOVIE, it's not supposed to make any sense, really, it's got a nutty backstory, but it's really a snapshot of a story. it was an AMAZING mad max movie. that genre is not for everyone of course!

the house is supposedly done.... now? they didn't say they weren't coming back again, but I think they're done. just waiting for the final bill now. I AM SO THANKFUL.

I'm overwhelmed too! when I got to the part where she was like: DO ALL THE CLOTHES, DO NOT DO ONE ROOM AT A TIME I was very much like: oh, hell no. I can't wreck all my rooms at once.

I don't know, I think this is a movie that requires a big screen and big sound. I think I need to get my act together and go see it!

it is a VERY BIG SCREEN AND SOUND movie. I also love that this kind of post-apocalyptic film is kind of the new artsy spaghetti western, you know? it was really gorgeous.

Week -1 (or is this week 0?)

Monday

I woke up and ACTUALLY WENT FOR A RUN. it was in between thunderstorms - we are having only rain for 3-4 days - but a little drizzly and cold out. no big. I got this. It has been weeks since I went running and my legs really felt it, but my core felt *so so so strong.* that was awesome.

I have a 2.5 mile run planned out - it's down a street, around a block, and back again. there's a lot of things to look at like fields and houses with nice landscaping (and watch out for, a couple of hairy hills and twisty curves where cars go a little too fast). as I was running I thought about a friend of mine who has been on a running streak - she's run 1 mile every single day for over a year, even if that meant running around the inside of her house in terrible weather. you know, that sounds pretty attractive to me. maybe another challenge I can have that as a goal.

Monday food was ok. I ate conservatively during the day because we'd promised the kids pizza for dinner. and I ate a bunch of pizza.

ALSO my jerk cat ran out of the house again and I was terrified she'd be lost and stay out for days, and I REALLY didn't want that to happen ESPECIALLY as we are leaving on a 2 week vacation on sunday, and if she wasn't home by then (I borrow trouble, don't I?) it would totally ruin the trip. but Eleven saved the day - I asked him to bring me a flashlight and he brought me her bag of treats and she TOTALLY ran straight to me when I shook it. GOOD TO KNOW, KITTY.

Tuesday
