NeverThatBored is Going to be a Plank Master

Recommended Posts

I wasn't going to post yet, but you all got me motivated. So here it is...my first challenge as an Adventurer! I'm trying out a theme for the first time, so be gentle with me! The best part of Pokémon was always the training, so I'm taking a leaf from their book. :)

Main Quest: Improve my posture

(Also keep losing weight, but y'know, themes.) I’ve noticed that I can’t sit up straight properly when I stick my legs out in front of me on the ground, which is kind of embarrassing. I feel like basic human anatomy should allow me to sit up straight.

Motivation

We had a health fair at work last year, and a chiropractor was doing this fancy electronic back scan that had a proper name I don't remember. To my surprise, I had the honor of the worst back of anyone she analyzed that day! Apparently my shoulders are really tense and hunched and my lower back is very fatigued (*coughgargoylecough*). So I think strengthening my core will make a big difference in both improving my posture and my general wellbeing.

Goal 1: Become a Plank Master - 4 plank sessions/week - 2 STA

I used to be amazing at planks. I’d just drop and do planks all the time because they were fun and I was good at them. So to get my plank groove back, I want to do planks four days/week (1 regular plank, and a side plank on each side). I’ll start at 60 seconds total for each type and work my way up to three minutes each. If I hit that, I’ll start one-legged planks.

I'm not counting the planks in the BBWW towards this total.

Ro2YC9im.png

Pikachu...doing the best plank his little Pokémon anatomy will allow.

Goal 2: Yoga Yoga Yoga! - 3 yoga sessions/week (with one focused on back/core) - 2 DEX

I find myself sitting up straighter after even one yoga session targeting the back and core, so I want to see how committing to it regularly can help me. I’ll do three 15-30 minute sessions per week, with at least one specifically targeting the back/core.

Doz5DPF.png

Part of training for the Pokémon League is making sure you stay limber.

Goal 3: Muscles - 3 BBWW (or 1 BBWW and 1 bootcamp class) & 3 10-minute core workouts - 2 STR 2 STA

In my last challenge I did the Beginner's Bodyweight Workout twice a week, so now I think I’m ready to increase that to the recommended three times per week. I can also replace two BBWW sessions with a 1 hour bootcamp class when those are available to me.

In addition, I’d like to get in three short core workouts per week. I have three (~10 min) core workouts to choose from - a clip from a retro workout video, a beginner Pilates workout, and a routine I remember from school, so I can vary it as I go. This shouldn't be too hard to squeeze in in the morning before work.

jy5Ewtf.gif

Psyduck is psyched.

Goal 4: Posture Training - focus on only posture for at least 1 minute/day - 1 CHA 1 WIS

This one was inspired by Ferngirl’s advice last challenge about how she improved her posture. I’ll spend some time every day, whether that’s one minute or twenty, focusing on nothing but my posture. I’ll sit up straight in a chair or do the standing exercise Steve describes here.

VGcnZrV.png

For healthy Pokémon, good posture feels like floating.

Reward

Sitting up properly would really be its own reward, but maybe I’ll buy myself a proper desk chair instead of the cheap fold-out chair I’m using at home now. Then I can sit properly instead of hunching over my laptop at the coffee table!

I’ll be traveling from June 6 - 16th, so the first week of my challenge will be extra challenging. But like the brave Pokémon who train and fight while traveling all over the realm, I too will try my hardest.

To stay on target, I'll need to do:

  • 4 BBBWs & 4 core workouts
  • 4 yoga sessions
  • 6 plank sets

I can go do the BBBWs/core workouts at the park, though I'll probably have to drop the dumbbell rows. I'll probably try to do the core work at the same time just to make it more likely that I get them in.

Yoga will be a little harder, since I'll be around pets who like to climb on people when they're doing yoga. I'll probably choose shorter videos for the four while I'm traveling. Most likely, I'll have to do these either right after I get up or right before bed.

Planks only take a couple of minutes total, so they shouldn't be too hard to get in.

Being jazzed: We have that effect on people.

This made me laugh because I'm the same way.  I know that because I've been carting around so much weight for so long that my back is a disaster.  Once I get within a specific range of weight, I was going to have a whole challenge dedicated to not being a gargoyle as well.

Good luck and have fun. If you have any questions then feel free to send me a Private Message or post at the Adventurer's Tavern. :)

Oh, and safe trip!

I got in my first traveling BBWW! I woke up early and walked to the park and did it (minus the dumbbell rows). I could probably carry something to the park to lift too, if I can find something portable enough.

It was weird to do on grass instead of indoors. I'm not sure if it was the grass or the traveling or what, but my lunges felt so unstable! Still, I did it and I am pleased. :)

I got in about 40 minutes of walking too.

I got in a forward bend yoga video and some planks this morning since I'll be busy all day today. I had to break the side planks into two sets to reach 60 seconds this time.

6/12 Update

I did the BBWW yesterday. My legs feel more tired when I'm doing it while traveling. I'm not sure whether it's from being unaccustomed to doing it on grass or that 5.5 mile hike I did the other day. I also got burned SO badly. I was wearing a cross-back shirt too so my shoulder blades are all red and angry now.

And I got in yoga for lower back strengthening this morning, so yay! :)

I'm struggling to also fit in the core workouts while I'm traveling but there's still time to squeeze them in. So, I'm working on improving that!

I got in a BBWW last night in a hotel room with three of my older relatives. I'm a bit impressed with myself. :)

I've increased my push ups to 11 reps to continue with increasing the difficulty.

Wow that are cool and ambitious goals. I felt the same way about planks during my first challenge. Someone told me, that it helped him to not oghle the watch during planking. I experienced, that slowbreathing helped me to not wobble so much and time seemed to go faster.

Good luck with strengthening your core. They say a good posture helps the mind as well. So perhaps you'll report other benefits to us soon. ;)

Edit: I finally found your first challenge. (No Sig on mobile) Know I know, how you found me at the Druids. I was a little confused, when out of nowhere someone poped up and told me, that she is back from her holiday. *haha* I'm really bad at remembering faces.

Congraz on mastering push-ups during your last challenge. Perhaps I should have done small reps of regular push-ups, too, instead of kneeling push-ups. Thank you for having a look at my challenge. I won't promise to follow you back, because last challenge, I couldn't stay accountable and I don't want to break any promises this time.

Power to you for exercising while vacationing, you'll definitely be a pokemon plank master :D . Hope your having fun while traveling too.

Planks are awesome, respect the plank, lol. Apart from hanging let raises they're pretty much my only core focused exercise cause there's so many kinds and an infinite amount of time to hold them. (plank jacks are fun but killer)

Week 2 Update

So I'm frustrated to admit that traveling and jet lag kicked my ass this week. Here's my overall progress so far. I should be at 6 of everything T_T

BBWW

4/18 for the challenge, up to 11 push ups

Core

3/18 for the challenge

Yoga

4/18 for the challenge

Planks

3/18 for the challenge

I'm doing fine on the posture focusing activity since that can be done very quickly.

So, it's time for a battle plan! I'm trying to quiet my perfectionist side by reminding myself that I managed way more exercise while I was traveling than I ever have in the past, even if it's not everything I was hoping to do. I should be more impressed with myself! I'm home now and ready to buckle down and get everything on track. Plus, I think I can make up some of the planks and core workouts over the next few weeks.

Plan for the rest of this week:

Monday - morning core/planks and evening yoga

Tuesday - morning core and evening Bootcamp (counts for two BBWW)

Wednesday - yoga and planks

Thursday - morning core and a make-up BBWW depending how sore I am from the bootcamp

Friday - make-up morning core, then evening yoga and planks

Saturday - BBWW and make-up planks

Plus of course resuming my daily walking routine. :)

Week 3 Summary

Guys, traveling really derailed me. I was able to stay on track this week, but I struggled with it so much that I don't really feel any sense of accomplishment. I'm feeling really stiff and unhealthy. I've been struggling with food as well since I got back, though that isn't actually a part of this challenge.

I think I need to channel the me from the last challenge who thought this was all a breeze. The main problem of course is that I'm doing a little too much this challenge - I should have kept it simpler. Well, lesson learned! All I can do is move forward. For the next week, I want to walk more and really focus on getting in some good yoga to tackle this stiffness.

Here are my updated numbers. I'm about 2 workouts behind on everything, which I guess isn't so terrible considering I was traveling/recovering for the first two weeks.

BBWW/Bootcamps

7/18 for the challenge, up to 12 push ups

Core

7/18 for the challenge

Yoga

7/18 for the challenge (Plus two I did today - that counts for week 4, so I'm not including it here)

Planks

7/18 for the challenge (Plus one I did today - I'm up to 90 seconds for a regular plank and around 60-65 for side planks)

I've started getting forgetful about posture practice, but those are easy to make up - I just have to sit and focus on it for a few minutes for each.

You don't get better at anything unless you start doing it.

I've been on a roll so far this week! After doing yoga, I realized how desperately I needed to do more yoga, so I've been rocking out yoga videos like crazy. I did my bootcamp class tonight and boy was that a workout! We did a tabata style workout that was very intense (and fun). I will feel the sore tomorrow, I'm sure.
