TALVI's NINTH CHALLENGE: On the wild track!

ark-survival-evolved.jpg

Time for a shiny new challenge and a shiny new game!   Ark survival is a game that has just been released for early access.    To be honest, I don't know much about the game yet.   But I do know that the idea is to survive and thrive on an island covered in dinosaurs. Particularly excited about taming velociraptors and riding enormous alligators around, and the game may have infiltrated my challenge theme.

I should probably introduce myself:  I'm Talvi and and these challenges have really helped me enjoy fitness particularly with my first push-up, starting and improving in climbing, my first 5km, my first 10km and recently my first chin-up and pull-up.  I've also used these challenges to improve my Spanish and to learn some programming.   At the moment, I'm playing Ark survival and whilst I am a long-time DOTA player, I'm trying some LoL and HotS on the side.

So let's get down to business.  I want to develop six skills which will coincidentally help me to survive on a dinosaur-filled island of doom:

never_drop_your_guns_lara_by_nebezial.jp

1)   Dinosaur! Argh, just keep running...

Whilst I'm not convinced I can outrun many dinosaurs, running will certainly be more useful than standing still.  Unless there is a T-Rex… But we'll cross that bridge should I ever come to it.  To train myself, I want to try running twice a week  (approx. 4 runs) in preparation for a 15km race in the gardens of Versaille on the 21st June.  It is only two weeks away, so I just need to practice being comfortable running that distance again. Not too bothered about running for the duration of the challenge, but it would be nice to run a couple of times in the last 4 weeks.   Also I need to get a certificate from a doctor before hand - I must remember to do that!

2)   This isn't working, try escaping vertically...

Should the running not shake off any velociraptors, my plan B is to climb to safety.   I could escape by trees, boulders or  mountains!  But I will train mainly on boulders.   I want to practice bouldering once or twice a week with the goal of playing with blue routes (the next level up) each session until I can actually do one.

3)   Flight isn't working, so what about fight?

To be honest, I'm not sure how I'd approach fighting a dinosaur.  So far in Ark Survival, I have punched a pterodactyl and it killed me.   I'm going to assume that in this survival scenario, that strength will be pretty important.    I did my first chin-up a couple of days ago (I was so very surprised) and literally just did my first pull-up an hour ago!   5 pull-ups in a row is on my epic quest list for 2015, so I am going to work towards that by trying different bodyweight workouts, tailored exercises or pull-up bar play.  Whatever takes my fancy on the day as long as some practice gets done each week.

4)   It's a UNIX system, I know this!

I don't know about you, but I'm not going to be eaten just because I didn't know my way around a computer.   Plus, there is definitely some tech in Ark Survival since there are some mysterious towers in the distance.   I'm made some progress in past challenges in learning Python, but this time my overarching goal is to finish the Edx MIT course 6.00.1x "Introduction to Computer Science and Programming using Python".

5)   Cuidado, hay un dinosaurio!

In this game, you can get teammates by joining tribes and then working together to survive longer and make more epic things.  Makes sense.  Expect that the boyfriend's tribe are all Spanish.  The plan here to use my HP audiobooks, Anki apps, online grammar practice, Spanish book lessons and speaking practice to improve

ark-survival-evolved-1-555dc0807f50c.jpe

6)   Dear reader, if you have found this diary then...

Now this is the MOST IMPORTANT OBJECTIVE of the challenge: to write down what I have done towards this challenge EVERYDAY (+/- 2 days).    There is nothing really new in this challenge, so I know that I can do these quests if I give them the time they deserve.  Writing down what I do everyday has been really helpful in past challenges:  it makes me more accountable and makes me review each day in the context of my goals.

Overall challenge set-up:

To level up in the challenge, I will only have to complete my 6th quest aka. post everyday about the challenge.

STAT points will be allocated depending on the successes in the other 5 goals.  Ideal allocation:

1. Running 5+ times: + 3 STA

2. Climbing: 11+ times: + 2 DEX & + 1 STR

3. 5 x pull-ups: + 2 STR & +1 DEX

4. Completed the first 6 weeks of programming course: + 3 WIS

5. Acceptable progress in Spanish: + 3 CHA

Thanks for reading and I'll see you guys on the forums.  Good luck with your challenge!

Welcome back to the Assassins, and congrats on the first pull-up :D From experience, if you have a GTG approach towards them then you'll soon find your pull-up AMRAP number increasing. And just think, you're already better at pull-ups than every T-Rex that ever existed...

Good luck for the challenge, y ¡hablamos pronto! :) (no sé cuándo)

Thanks!! It was so weird.  After all that moaning about not being able to get any upwards momentum, I just sort of did it.  And I did it completely.  Very cool stuff indeed!      Y si tenemos que hablar, pero no puedo hacerlo esta noche - necesito mucho tiempo para get set-up in this survival game. Puedes hablar una otra noche esta semana?

WEEK ONE

Monday

Spanish: I listened to some Spanish rock.fm at work in between odd jobs (admittedly mostly English songs, but there is still a little Spanish in there), I also listened to 10 minutes of my HP audiobook and did 75% of my Anki flashcards for the day.

Tuesday

Almost went to bed without reporting in, but I remembered last minute.  Hoped to go bouldering today, but I ended up working too late.  My programming course starts tomorrow!

Spanish: Did an Anki flashcard session.

Wednesday

Spanish: Only listened to about 5 minutes of Spanish this morning

Climbing: Went bouldering today after work for a bit.  I could do 8/21 greens, but this time I didn't try the two traverse routes because they were occupied.  So I'm going to say that I can do approx. 10 green routes at the start of this challenge.   If anyone wants to recommend any specific exercises for climbing then just let me know.  I have a problem at the moment when I am too afraid to do the last movement on a route, so I'll try and figure out a way to combat that.  Maybe practice similar moves closer to the ground?   And practice the dreaded squats...

Running: I booked my doctors appointment so that I can get a certificate saying I am fit enough to race.

Thursday

Spanish:  Did today's Anki flashcards on the metro and also watched 2.5 episodes of Danny Phantom in Spanish.

Pull-up work: Today I tried something new.  I did one of the Darebee workouts - "Starbuck"! I was looking for a routine that included a pull-up, and I thought I'd give this one a go.   I only did 2 sets of: 5 chin-ups, 40 punches, 20 sloppy jumping lunges, 10 push-ups, 10 shoulder taps, 9 bunny hops, 10 sit-up punches, 10 air bike crunches and 15 sitting twists.  Things I learnt: I should avoid jumping exercises in our flat and I can do 3 *unofficial chin-ups in a row now (they are still pretty sloppy and I didn't go completely to deadhang).

I'm following along. Partly for the running, partly for the climbing and partly because I don't understand what Ark Survival is and I want to figure that out. :)

Some very good reasons there

Today is day 2 of my Ark Survival experience: Everything is awesome!  It is like being shipwrecked in jurassic park and having to survive in a PvE and PvP environment.  Surviving has not been my strength so far though....  I did just punch a T-rex in the face....  Totally worth it.

I like the challenge, and the game sounds fun! I've said it before but will say it again; 6.00.1x is a great course :) Also, congrats on your first pull-up!

You are very reassuring.   The first two weeks should be very easy since I have completed them before, so I will try to get a head start and hopefully gain for time in the long-run.     And thanks - I keep walking past my pull-up bar and doing them randomly throughout the day.  Just because I can :D

I kind of want to adopt this as something said during daily life when an attempt doesn't quite work out.

That is true!  Failing with style or failing with awesome?

WEEK ONE (part 2)

Friday

Feeling a little DOMs from that darebee workout in my arms.

Spanish: I did an Anki flashcard session (finally caught up with the app).  I listened to 5 minutes of HP in the morning whilst I was getting ready, but that hardly counts.  I also watched an episode of a cartoon Danny Phantom in Spanish whilst I was washing up.

Python: I have started this Edx a couple of times before so I just went through week one's lectures and did all the exercises I could find.  I have now completed 2% of the course

Saturday

Argh Revenge of the DOMS!  Feeling productive this morning :)

Spanish: Whilst in bed, I did today's Anki flashcard session.

Python: Last night, I decided to see if there were any apps to help with Python learning.  And I downloaded a type of quiz which seems interesting for the moment.  So far it has been good practice for following global variables and it is helping to remember Python syntax.   I played a few times last night and this morning.  Top score is currently 97202 points.

Running: I went for a long run around the Bois de Vincennes; I looped around the lake a few times and did a total of 15.48km.  It was an epic run and I returned to the news that my best friend has just been accepted onto a PhD course!!!  So proud of her, she has really worked hard for it and massively deserves it!   Just bounding around the house now :D

Sunday

Spanish: Anki flashcard session!

Python: I have done all but two exercises for lecture 4 on Edx (week 2) and I remembered that Checkio was a fun learning tool the last time I got into programming, so I will have to find my login info for it.

Okay... so Week ONE: Pretty good

Generally, this week went well.  I reported in everyday on my progress with my goals so 7/7 for that.

As for running, I let time get away from me and I only ran 1/2.  At least, it was a good long run and I have booked a doctor's appointment, so I am mostly set for the race on Sunday. Hoping to do one long run before Sunday and maybe one little 5km.  But we'll see.

I only climbed 1/1 this week, which is pretty normal for me so I'll need to do more in the future.

I did my first bodyweight workout in ages, because of my pull-up quest, so I am very happy!  Managed three back-to-back chin-ups :)

I started my Python course and I completed the exercises from the first 3 lectures, I'm just revising at this point. Three lectures won't be my normal speed.

The good news is that I did some Spanish everyday, but the bad news is that I didn't orally practice.  So I need to sort myself out.

I promised you that you'd get more chin-ups/pull-ups soon now you've got your first one - pretty impressed you get 3 this early though :) I'm going to be busy most of this week but should be able to speak Spanish with you next week. Are you still planning to do the exam in October?

:D My pull-up bar is much less daunting now. I can talk whenever, just as long as I stop myself from playing games. So next week is good.

I'm not sure about the exam now. I need to think through the pros and cons now, since I have fallen behind with my language learning.

Week TWO

Monday
Spanish : Anki app
Python : Finished lecture 3 from the edx course by thinking through 2 exercises.

Tuesday

I gave blood, so no exercises for at least today.  I tried to watch a cartoon in Spanish, but I didn't take anything in.

Wednesday

Still no exercise, but I thought about it and I didn't want to use my arms today and risk getting a bruise.  I've been eating and drinking a lot, so I'm going to test myself tomorrow with a little 5k run (and perhaps some sprints if I feel like it) to make sure the loss of red blood cells doesn't have any big health effects on meI suspect I'll be fine, but that I won't be beating any PRs. Looking for to my race on Sunday!   I'm a tad disappointed that I didn't train more for it, but at this point I think it is wiser to be rested and ready than to get in last minute long runs.

Spanish: I watched an episode of Danny Phantom and I did today's Anki flashcards.

Python:  I did 5 little exercises on codecademy.com . It isn't much but it is good to familiarize myself with Python as much as possible.  Hoping to do some more tomorrow (I have a day-off!).

Thursday

Spanish: Did well today: did my Anki flashcard session, watched an episode of Danny Phantom at lunch, did one Spanish lesson on the imperfect tense, listened to el capitulo de "El boggart del armario ropero" (34.23 minutes + 8.30 minutes of the next chapter).

Bouldering: Since I had the day off work, I thought today would be a good time to boulder during the working day and avoid the crowds.  It was awesome and I had nearly everything to myself.   I didn't count the routes I did, but this was a very good session.  I felt like I could do the majority of the greens, and I did some routes which I just couldn't before.  Very happy with this.

Running and race stuff: I picked up my racing bib and goodies today for Sunday, so I'm totally good to go now.  I've even been given a tiara for the 15km race, which amuses me.   I was pretty tired from walking a lot today and bouldering, but I wanted to put some last minute effort to prepare so I did a quicky 5km around the neighbourhood.  It was really nice.  I never do such short distances now, and it was weird to think how comfortable I am doing 5km now compared to my struggles last year.

Looking at your summary that first week was definitely a success. Sounds like you are well set up for a fun race this weekend!

Am I correct in interpreting the Sabre tooth information to read that you can domesticate them in your Ark Survival game?

Hi Presea!  For some reason, I didn't know that Ecuador spoke Spanish.  What is the accent like?   I would love to practice with you, if you are up for it and the logistics work out.   Are you still in Minnesota?  I'm in France, so I'm 7 hours ahead of you.   I'm send you a PM :)

Thanks.  It could have been better, but if I can work on our my goals like I did last week then I should be rocking this challenge *fingers crossed*

I just received my race kit, so I'm totally set up for the race now.  The kit contained my number, a t-shirt (that fits - win!), sweets, a puzzle book, wet wipes and a tiara!  At least, now I can run the palace gardens in style :P

In my experience, Sabretooths are demons of the night that come out at night to murder the hell out of you.  You can tame one by knocking it unconscious and nursing back to health with dino meat, but so far I've only managed to kill or be killed.   They are pretty badass, so I hope to have one soon!

Yeah, pretty much all of South America (except the northeastern part - Brazil, Guyana, etc.) speaks Spanish.  The accent is very different from that of Spain, and it even varies within the country depending on the region.  I'm busy now getting ready for a trip we'll be taking soon, but I will have much more free time in July - I will PM you then and see if we can figure out a good time to practice :)

My boyfriend is at MIT for a summer research program, so we're going traveling to Boston to visit him.  The trip will be 13 days total, though 4 of those will be spent just getting there and back (traveling via bus/train).  I'll be back the night of 7/7, so I'll PM you then to set up a time (or you can PM me if I forget - I am known for having a bad memory :/).

Sabretooths (teeth?) sound awesome. I'm sorry they keep killing you but I maintain that I am a fan. Let us know when you tame one because I am pretty sure at that point you win everything.
