RxLady Posted June 8, 2015 Report Share Posted June 8, 2015 I am respawning for another NF challenge! It's been a little while but I am back for another round! So this challenge for me is going to be all about the food because eating well has been getting away from me lately. There's be no food prep and poor meal choices, for the most part. I will say I have been doing a lot of salads at work for lunch, but that triggers in my mind the ability to indulge in poorer choices later, and that just has to stop. Goal 1: Planning makes perfect.... The first goal is to plan out my meals for 6 weeks - yes, all six weeks, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and at least one snack. The afternoon snack I think is going to be vital to the success of an overhaul of my eating habits, as I am usually really hungry after work. I delay eating a little bit with a walk with my dog, but I usually still nibble something before my husband makes it home from work, and I need that something to be more filling and not make me feel guilty. In my planning, I will allow some leeway for lunches, as a lot of time I do eat at the cafeteria at work and they always have a nice salad bar available, or some good fish/veggie options which are always tasty. But that is where the leniency ends! I will post my meal plans for the week (hopefully earlier in the week rather than later, but this week might get off to a little bit of a late start - a lot of my planning will happen tonight/tomorrow, since it's my day off!) I will accomplish my meal plans with help from my second goal.... +2 WIS, +3 CON (No slacking - 6 out of 6 weeks planned for all the points; 4 out of 6 for half the points, or none.) Goal 2: Go shopping! As much as I wish it were the fun shopping for shoes or elven weaponry, it will be the grocery kind! I will go shopping once a week to ensure I have lots of fresh produce in the house for my side dishes/snacks. Also some fruit in there too, as my sweet tooth has always been my downfall, and I will need them for curbing the cravings. My own style of nicotine patch in fruit form. +3 WIS, +1 CON (6 out of 6 for all points, 4 out of 6 for partial WIS credit, less than 4 = no points) Goal 3: No cake! There's bound to be cake. Somehow, there is always f*cking cake. And I think I just need to cut out sweet treats one at a time until there are few left. First it will be cake. No cupcakes, morning coffee cakes, regular cakes, ice cream cakes... etc. You get the idea. I'll try to focus the sweet tooth toward good dark chocolate, the occasional cookie, but cake is out. +3 CHA, +1 CON I know what you're thinking - where is the exercise?! I find that I am able to do SOMETHING physical every day - whether it's walking my dog 1-2 miles or weight lifting or even getting back to jogging (maybe soon?), this part is not so difficult for me. It is controlling the food that surrounds the workouts that is my trouble. So, my side quest: Working out 3 days a week, whether it's weights or jogging or walking, if it's over 30 minutes it counts. +1 STA, +1 STR - Need 16 out of 18 workouts to earn the stat points. It's not perfect, and there are certainly some nights up in the air due to actual social activities, but at least I have a game plan for the next 3 weeks and a couple of grocery lists started. I went to the grocery store today, so that counts for week 1! I plan to do most of my shopping on Sunday/Monday for the following week, so it will be kind of a rolling week to week tally for store trips. Here is my meal plan for this week. It's kind of hard to read, but it's there, with some lists for shopping. A lot of my breakfasts and lunches are the same, for convenience and prep purposes, and dinners I tried to plan 2 per week so there are leftovers for the second night. I am still nursing some lower back soreness/injury, so I have walked 15 minutes so far today. Provided it doesn't start storming (the sky is a bit dark at the moment) I will try for another 1-2 mile walk with my pooch. There's also some planting of tomato plants to be done and a trip to the gardening store, so that will take up some time and energy. Side note, I made turkey jerky today! Breakfast was 2 HB eggs and yogurt, snack was a banana and 15 almonds, lunch was a big salad w/ grilled chicken, another snack was apple and 2 oz vanilla greek no fat yogurt mixed w/ 0.5 tbsp peanut butter and some cinnamon. The apple dip was delicious! Then dinner came along. Now, I've heard many things about "best laid plans" and whatnot, and this was one of those moments - best intentions, but it didn't work out. Last night, hubby and I grilled a bunch of chicken, which we ate with carrots last night, but had plenty of leftovers for a few nights. Well, I left the chicken in a container, but out to cool, and then of course I forgot to put it in the fridge, so it's all gone now. Then, hubby decides to go fishing tonight with a pal, so I'm on my own for dinner. Luckily I had some leftover veggie sushi from the day before, and I ate that along with some freezer broccoli w/ cheese sauce. Turned out to be not a bad dinner health wise. Exercise: 2 miles total walked w/ Zoe for a total of about 40 mins. The back is almost normal - just a little more icing I think... Pharmacists make great nerds, glad to see another one utilizing this fun site! OMG - so simple but this sounds fantastic. Why haven't I thought of this before?! I didn't think of it either! I found a list of some great 150 cal snacks for post workout/run and this was on the list. It's totally excellent too. Highly recommend. Glad someone else has a scatter brain every once in a while - too bad it was at the cost of a bunch of yummy chicken! Challenge sounds good, Slayer. Any questions, feel free to send me a PM. RxLady Posted June 15, 2015 Author Report Share Posted June 15, 2015 It's been a busy couple of days - sorry for the lack of posts! But the meal plan is going well - I did opt for a sandwich at work on Saturday instead of a salad, since the salad bar on the weekend at work lacks a little bit... But I've been much better about my snacks and not just shoving whatever is closest in my mouth when I get home from work. I got in my 3 days of 30+ minute exercising - mostly walking this time around, but this week I am going to get back to weights as I feel back to normal from my lower back twinge. I went shopping yesterday for this week and spent part of yesterday prepping Twice Baked Sweet Potatoes for breakfasts this week (minus today as I work a PM shift and I am home to make breakfast). Here is this weeks meal plan: Dinners include Chicken Curry Stir Fry w/ Brown Rice and Salmon with roasted broccoli. Again, both meals made with the intent of eating leftovers the next day. Tonight is a little different as I work a PM shift, so I will be cooking on Tuesday and Thursday. And my lunch salad will be for dinner. As for no cake, a solid first week! I saw several cupcake events at work, but skipped them all. Luckily none was brought into the actual pharmacy - that will be the real test! I did have two social events - First, the Rush concert in Chicago (which kicked MAJOR ASS!), but prior to the show we had to grab a bite to eat - we chose Subway, as it was nearby, and I had some Turkey on wheat, which was a pretty good choice if I do say so myself. Second, our nephews came to visit to watch a movie, but luckily we ate a decent dinner of grilled hotdogs (no buns for me) and grilled veggies - we did have some homemade popcorn with the movie, but not too much (you know, butter and salt, etc) so it was good. Went shopping on Saturday night for this upcoming week. No cake - Check! I did not have any cake, but luckily this week there wasn't very much around for temptation. New in the fitness arena: I have an appointment with a personal trainer on Wednesday to make set up something and get rolling again. I think I need a little more direction, because my hodge podge of trying to watch what I eat and jogging every so often plus some weights just isn't really getting me anywhere in terms of weight loss, so I'm going to see what I need to tweak. Plus I seem to keep hurting myself - never anything major, but enough to set me back by days or a week and it drops my motivation. So hopefully I can work on that and get some tips on technique. I also reconnected with Fitbit after my husband won a Fitbit scale so I am working toward more flights of stairs at work and at least 10,000 steps again - just as extra work throughout my day. Now, I have some expendable income... and I think this is something I want to commit to and see how it goes... But it comes with a bit of a price tag.... This is something I have to ponder. Shello Posted June 29, 2015 Report Share Posted June 29, 2015 The trick with the trainer is paying enough for the ones that are trained well but not overpaying because they work in a highly commercialized fitness money making machine where they just dole out some cookie cutter program so they get as many clients as possible. Depending on the package deals can you start with a small package or even a freebie to see if you like it? I figure for 3 months, 2x per week, if I can't devote that to myself, learning something and bettering my overall health and habits, then wtf. It IS a bit pricey, but I kind of consider it like a personal class - show up twice a week to stay on schedule, but continue to work in my off time and improve my knowledge and workouts. Eek! Now I just have to start. I have some travelling coming up and then some guests from out of town, so I will start July 13th. Whew! So far, still no cake, meal plan going pretty darn well (a couple of substitutes so far, but sometimes you have to improvise) and I went to the store again this week, grocery list in hand. Going again tomorrow actually for some items that need to be fresh. This week on the menu, HB eggs for breakfast, salads/fish for lunches, Mexican Quinoa for one dinner, greek chicken pitas for the other (both with leftovers). I have been absent from the forums a bit, but it's been a really busy two weeks, between holidays, family, and visiting friends! I have been able to stick to my guns on some things - NO CAKE. This has been going well. I have not cut out all sweets, but no cake. and it's been just fine. I think the next thing to go will be cookies.... I am not planning a food menu this week. *cue audible gasp* I am starting my training sessions tomorrow and this comes with a meal plan, so the work, I believe will be done for me! So my goal for this final week is to shop for the new meal plan and follow it! I have been doing well on the grocery shopping and will go again after my orientation session tomorrow. I am nervous and excited and afraid of failing really bad and psyched. Can you even feel all those things at once? I will report after my session and let you all know what to expect.
