Neva's Building Blocks (Balance, Clarity, Direction)

I need to stop fixating with what I want and biting off too much, and instead focus on building a foundation. No first pull-up without being able to dead-hang first, right?

I need balance so that I don't dive in too hard and move on. This also means to look at these three categories with respect to my body(P), mind(M), and environment(E).

I have far too much in my head, too many ideas, not enough plans, too many started projects, and it is all nebulous; the key to fixing this is clarity

Once I cut through the fog I need direction to keep me on track and to stay ahead of the pit traps and getting lost in the jumble again.

Balance:

-60s crow pose (P)

-Read some each day, balance non-fiction with fiction (M)

-8 walks over the course of the challenge (E)

Clarity:

-Stretch every morning (P)

-Write or Draw daily to get the idea out instead of cluttering my head (M)

-Complete 3 started projects around the house (E)

Direction:

-10 standard push-ups in a single set (P)

-average 2 hours/day learning (M)

-Apply for the Peace Corps (E)

1 stat point per item, then 1 for each completed block, and 1 for each completed category (P, M, or E). 9+3+3=15

I had the habit of reading before bed down a few weeks ago, although it fell, and I have been maintaining stretching fairly well, with the creative time slipping but about 1/3 days. Anyway, the daily ones are complete if I get 90%, which is at least 38/42 days of the challenge.

Rewards:

-Small archery kit (recurve, 25lbs draw) for passing this challenge (cut off is 90%, so all but 1 item)

-clothing item from etsy I cannot make well yet (LONG term, for finishing all my incomplete hobby projects currently started because I keep getting ideas for new ones that I am unwilling to start)

-Learning goals upon reaching a certain point have small rewards too.

Stretched

3h studying

Read academic articles

10 knee push-ups

Week 1 Summary:

No progress on Crow, walks, projects, or my application

7/7 on stretching and Reading

10/14 on Studying, a strong start with lots of room for improvement

Missed 2 days on Write/Draw daily - That is bad, since I can miss up to 5 total.

Overall: Acceptable start but I need to do better and kick it into the next gear.

We really are working on a lot of the same kinds of things! I like how you've structured your goals and the rewards are great.

You had a solid first week. Just keep at it!

All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity:

but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.

~T. E. Lawrence

When we contemplate the whole globe as one great dewdrop, striped and dotted with continents and islands,

flying through space with other stars all singing and shining together as one, the whole universe appears as an infinite storm of beauty.

Wednesday

stretched

sketched something for a friend's birthday, colored a pre-challenge sketch playing with oil pastels

read a little, fiction

1 h study

Tried crow stand with my head on pillows

Had another bad headache

Here is a sketch from last week: Link

Thursday

-read some of a book about Sudan, a little outdated from 2010 but it mostly covers Darfur so the information it has is mostly relevant since it isn't about the South that split off

-that 2 hours counted as studying since it is an educational topic/old school book

-started writing down an odd idea that was bothering/nudging me, which was the point of the write/draw goal (to declutter those from my head)

-stretched, tried some shoulder stuff with a tennis ball

Friday

-stretched

-studied 1.5 h by reading the rest of the Sudan book and a couple of articles on deep machine learning

-worked on a little story but didn't get far

Saturday

-stretched

-0.75 studying (reading about computer programs that learn and how it is done) there was more time, but a lot of that was just looking for things to read, not actual studying

-10 knee pushups

-small progress writing

I need to pull myself up on writing and studying, crow and push-ups too.

I think I might need to find a fair way to reduce the 'walks' goal, maybe just outside time? My dog isn't doing so well and it has gone from nearly 30C for over a week to raining for a week with humidity and nearly the same temps but without so much sun.

-----------

Week 2 Report: Yellow, it is going but not quite 'well'.

Balance:

-60s crow pose (P)

only one day of practice, needs a lot of work

-Read some each day, balance non-fiction with fiction (M)

14/14 days so far!

-8 walks over the course of the challenge (E)

1, but outside days might count, has run into a snag but I don't want to rewrite it just because I am falling behind.

Clarity:

-Stretch every morning (P)

14/14 days

-Write or Draw daily to get the idea out instead of cluttering my head (M)

12/14 days, which with a good week two puts it at a breath under the 90% threshold

-Complete 3 started projects around the house (E)

Total I have made progress on just one, working on it just once.

Direction:

-10 standard push-ups in a single set (P)

Has been worked on 5 days total, but not consistently and not enough to show progress

-average 2 hours/day learning (M)

Week 1 was -4, Week 2 was -7.5. I am going to aim for 3 hours a day this week to try and salvage this.

-Apply for the Peace Corps (E)

no progress

It's moving forward. Seems like you are doing well on the clarity section. Also on the consistency of recording your progress.

You'll rock this challenge, Nova!

Wednesday

-stretched

-6 push-ups in a set, but not all the way down + CPR cert class

-5 hours of studying, nearly two of which while watching a lecture included:

-made progress on a second project (1st not complete) that is more done that I thought it was

-a little proofreading on a short-story, it needs more work than I thought and might need to be accepted as-is or have parts rewritten.

-tried crow with a pillow again

-fiction reading

Seems like it's coming along fine.

What kind of fiction do you write.

Usually fantasy. I'm working on getting better at making progress when I have the document open, trying to make progress regularly, planning, proofreading, and such using fanfiction right now because it is easier to get feedback online. I also have some penpals to write and I want to switch two to a story (one collab, one just me writing) but I keep putting it off and when I first had the idea my writing skill had fallen an embarrassing amount.

I like your goals! I also write fiction, although I haven't been lately. I'm recharging the subconscious. :)
