Goal 1: Manage my time better.

I have been good about forcing myself to do my workouts, but lately I have been getting home from work late, taking care of the dogs later, and working out even later, leaving dinner and bedtime for really late.  And leaving no time for chores, fun, or other needed activities.  I have decided to try and adjust my life schedule to allow for more effective use of my time. I  im the process of wokring into a promotion at work, which means even more hours at work, and with a baby on the way I know this current path is not sustainable.  Something needs to change and this is my plan.

  A. Work out in the mornings, this means getting up at 5 am but means that when work is over I am free for other activities.  I have taken my normal work out and spread it over 5 days instead of 3, so I won't  be cutting anything out, but makes everydays work about 45 mins long.  My wife (Heathbar) will be joining me for 3 days in the morning.  Were collaborating.

B.Use work and walking the dogs to get my needed steps in, aiming for 10.5k.  Instead of planning walks while watching videos in the park.

  C. Fully commit to using my electronic planner, I do so for work, but planning out my chores, and other activities at home will allow me to better use my time.

  D. Continue to do my wizerscices, getting in bonus exercises is a win all around.

Goal 2: Lose Weight

Lets keep it simple and say I will lose 6 lbs, that is one lb a week.  Starting point to be determined tomorrow morning.

My plan of action is to track calories using Myfitness pal, and come in under 2k calories with the allowance of one cheat day.  I am collaborating with the Heathbar on goal also.

Goal 3: Get Stronger

I have been doing the morning workouts for just over a week now, and well its kinda sucks.  In all honesty I got really into increasing numbers, and my workouts were were becoming so strenuous, that I just couldn't do them first thing in the morning.  So I made the decision to drop 25% and rebuild my lifts.  I will post my new starting points and I will aim for a 10% increase, since last time 5% came fairly easy.  I am still rocking my body weight routine as well and I may adjust my exercises for more difficult varieties.  I will see how that goes through the challenge. My wife is doing the body weight stuff with me and I am solo on my stronglifts.

Life Goal: Prepare for Baby Makayla

The main goal here is to swap our office (fancy sounding video game room) into a nursery.  My wife is awesome, and agreed to a star wars themed room, so that great!  It will require a lot of demo and most likely a bunch of drywall work. Flooring will also need to be swapped, paint, trim, etc.  the list is pretty long and may not be finished in 6 weeks, but it will have to be done in the next 3-4 months to hit a deadline I am unable to move.  Pics before after and during should be expected.  I will also be having a baby shower soon, and my wife has told me I need to go pick out baby stuffs with her.  So I need to make that happen as well.

TL;DR:

1. Not enough time, find more

2. Fight the fat kid, fight dirty if needed

3. lift moar weight

4. baby coming, OMG preps need doing

I'm super stoked to be part of NF again.  It really helps me to keep  my fitness and nutrition in mind while life keeps plotting along.

Oh man, so much good stuff here I don't know what to start commenting on first. I guess congrats on the baby and that all is going well. Makayla is a good name!

Cool to see you're shooting for the 10% increase on the weights. That's a big, ambitious jump!

Glad to have you back for another round!

Looking forward to seeing how you do! And you're so organized with the whole nursery thing! I was kind of in denial about my first child (I kept thinking something was going to go horribly wrong with the pregnancy and didn't want to "get my hopes up") that I got to 8 months and realized I hadn't even bought a crib yet. If you've still got 3-4 months to go you'll be in great shape (in all meanings of the word). And Star Wars nursery theme = Best Thing Ever!

Thanks for the warm wishes everyone.

Starting weight as of this morning is 211.5

Good first day, morning work out done.

1975 calories

14531 steps

Had time after work to walk both dogs, go food shopping, and even watch some tv with my wife.

Time wise morning work outs rock, but at 5:00 I am not happy doing my pushups.  Trade offs, I hope my body gets used to it sooner than later.

It's funny, 5am used to be impossible for me. Now, 4 years and two kids later, I often pop awake at 4:55. So I've made 5am my preferred workout time, and I also get some quiet time for meditation afterwards. It's kind of blissful to have some quiet time before the kids wake up.

By the way, mine are 3 years old and 13 months old--when you've got a newborn anything resembling a "schedule" will be out the window for a few months (at least).

A star wars themed nursery sounds amazing!  Please post pictures of it when you've finished.  :)

It's really great that you're focusing on walking so much now.  After the baby arrives, it can be really tough to have the time and motivation to exercise, other than taking nice long walks.  Babies fortunately make great rucksacks.

I know what you mean on the performance of morning workouts. Unfortunately, I have not noticed my body getting used to the idea. It just seems that performance is improved in the evening. My theory (based on no science) is that the morning training translates into improved performance at all times. I'm guessing it isn't actually strength that is affected but rather your entire physiology. Therefore, if your morning max is 200 lbs, evening max is 220, and you train in the morning until your morning max is 220 I would expect to see some additional gain in the evening.

This is what I tell myself to feel better about when I have time to train.

Thanks! and you got it on the pics.

I figure the baby can be built in weight training :)

I hope it translates into gains, but even if not the benefit of better time management is worth it.

I am starting with a 25% drop in weight, but plan to add 10 of it back on by the end of the challenge.  So it is only a matter of time.

You know, if you keep carrying the baby as it grows for strength training purposes:

1) You will get really strong, and

2) Your teenager will have dependency issues.

Working out first thing in the morning makes it hard for me to care very much. The only thing I really enjoy doing is getting up, throwing on shoes, and running. For lifting or bodyweight stuff I find myself settling for less than 100% effort. I guess I should be trying to encourage you...what I'm trying to say is, "I understand getting up early to workout is challenging."

Keep it up with the AM workouts! I started doing 5 AM workouts about 3 years ago because my other option was after 9 PM, and I was usually exhausted.  I don't know if it ever gets "fun", but it does get easier as you build the habit.  And I usually feel more energized afterward, so you get a good start to the day.

Week 1 recap.

All 5 morning workouts in!  I am stubborn, and will keep it going, even thou its rough.

calories were right, except for my cheat day which as expected I cheated...

I have added 5lbs to squats, bench, and rows so far.  So my 10% goal is on its way.

Outage made prepping for the baby a bit hard, but we did use my day off to go to the store and pick out baby shower stuff.

Strollers, car seats, and baby stuff is crazy hard to pick!  So many options!

So at least that part is done.

Don't forget to sign up for the Quidditch team.  I know you're more than capable of putting up some monster numbers for the exercises in that mini, so we really need you.

Good luck with the baby shopping.  The sheer quantity of gear out there can make the entire process really overwhelming.  One good thing to keep in mind is that babies don't really need all that much for the first 3 months.

Your right overwhelmed describes me just right.

I got my work out in, and back on track.

I will check out the mini later on today!

well yesterday was ok.

1890 calories

11110 steps

and an increase on squats, OH press, and DL

I also was asked to apply for a promotion at work, I was hesitant to do so.  For time reasons, I work more than I would like already, and this would only add new responsibilities.

But I ended up doing so, the idea of someone I don't won't to work being my boss was more motivating.  I am not promised this job, but was given a wink wink kinda thing.

Anyway that is whats up.

The Bad news.  I skipped my morning bodyweight set, and I liked it.  I want to modify my schedule to 3 early mornings.  I can also use the weekend as a make up if needed.

This is my new plan at the moment.

This happened to me about a year and a half ago. Well, I was "encouraged" to apply and told that not applying might affect my continued employment. One thing I did which ended up being helpful was to use the negotiations to outline some of my expectations, e.g. work hours, management support, my analysis of what was needed from the position. Ultimately, the promotion was as terrible as I expected and I quit. However, having that conversation early on helped me personally to say I really did give it everything I could - including engaging upper management.

In my current job I made it a formal goal to manage my division in such a way that I can work a normal workweek. That might be an approach too...

Good luck!
