Knightwatch: BY THE POWER OF (crossfit and) GREYSKULLLL!!!!

Recommended Posts

OK, new "battle log", to reflect the new direction my workouts have taken these past few weeks. Basically, I'm following the Strength Villain Greyskull LP for strength, and adding in several Crossfit WODs a week.

I'll use this at least between Challenges, and will try to remember to update it during the Challenges themselves, maybe just talking about the highlights or lowlights of the workouts on them and just linking over here.

We'll see.

Anyway, away we go!

DECEMBER 11, 2011

WARMUP

3 rounds of:

* 10 BURPEES

* 10 PVC PASS THRU's

PRESS

45 x 5

45 x 5

95 x 5

135 x 3

152.5 x 5

152.5 x 5

152.5 x max (got 9) PR!

DEADLIFTS

135 x 5

185 x 4

225 x 3

275 x 2

315 x 1

315 x 1

390 x max (got 6)

Booo. Nothing felt right on these today. Two weeks in a row where I barely hit the 5 minimum threshold. Gotta stop half-assing my diet and recovery.

IRON LOG CLEAN AND PUSHPRESS

65 x 5

115 x 3

135 x 1

155 x 1

175 x 1

185 x 1

195 x 1

Last rep was a little rough. Lil' wobbly on the clean, then when I finally got planted, I missed the press. Brought it back to my chest, took a big breath, and ground it out. Ground out a push press? Right. it was basically a curtsy and a press. But hey, it went up.

WEIGHTED CHINS

10 x 6

10 x 6

Absolutely not 100%. But, enough was enough.

WARMUP

jump roping. nothing specific, just a few minutes, mixing double unders and my old boxing style. managed to string together almost 20 DUs though.

BENCH PRESS

45 x 5

45 x 5

135 x 4

135 x 3

185 x 2

185 x 1

235 x 5

235 x 5

235 x max (got 10) PR!

These felt great. Time off from it helped a lot. Also, had a great spotter for my last set who actually knew what he was doing, giving confidence that he was there if I hit a wall, but wasn't crowding me or getting anywhere close to touching the bar. Awesome.

SQUAT

45 x 5

95 x 4

135 x 3

135 x 2

185 x 2

235 x 5

235 x 5

235 x max (got 9) PR....?

Ugh. I had to reset after only getting 265 for 4 last time, which itself was a surprisingly low bar. Previous 235 for max, I managed 8. So, technically, a PR. Eh. Was hoping for 10-12, and my form on 9 was terrible. No idea what's going on with squats. Thinking of buying a one-on-one session with a powerlifting guy I know, seeif he can tell me what's up. I did try a different cue this time, "knees out" instead of hips back, which felt great on the second work set. Felt really strong there. Somehow, something fell apart on the last set. I dunno. I'm sure the new cue/emphasis will take some getting used to, but I was still hoping for better.

No way I should be benching more than I squat at this point in my career, especially since I haven't ignore deads and squats for years now. Weird. Something's wrong.

ALTERNATING DUMBBELL CURLS

35 x 12

35 x 13

And that's it. Still feeling sick, so I wasn't gonna push it with a metcon or anything.

Hotel rooms always sound better in theory.

Bored out of my mind while I wait to go to bed at an hour that won't make me feel like an 87 year old.

So, 100 pushups. Mwod1.

And a whole lot of ceiling-staring.

Wait... so you use training methods that are a mix of 5x5, 5/3/1 and Chaos and Pain, up to and including dumbbell curls, get ALL of your actual progress from this program of heavy weight x low reps, and then do a tabata interval once in a blue moon and pretend this is "crossfit?"

What planet do you live on to where you stick up for "crossfit" when you get all your progress from power bodybuilding, up to and including dumbbell curls?

Been a CF / CF inspired guy since 2003. Glad to see another.

Can you link me to the Greyskull protocol you're following? For my str work I do the Rip Starting Str program, usually for two months once a year.

Rest of the year more metcon type stuff, especially in how I live in hotel rooms. Burpees ftw.

The Spartans don't ask how many, only where the enemy are.

You don't rise to the level of your expectations, you fall to the level of your training.

The simple fact is, there are people out there who are nothing more than a bipedal cheeseburger. They're a self-propelled snack pack looking for someone to eat them. There is no helping the truly consumable among us.

Don't argue with stupid people. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I thought for sure from your pics you were like 6' 2" or something. I'm 5' 10"... and NOWHERE close to these numbers. I gotta catch up... haha. Seriously, though... incredible job. I've always enjoyed watching your logs.

haha, nope, I wish. A few extra inches vertical would go a long way towards my gut not looking quite so...um, "stout". :P But thanks for reading along, your progress is likewise an inspiration!

Sure thing. If you strip out curls and chins and such, leaving those to metcon work, you'll find GSLP delightfully simple. Two movements a workout, at it's most basic, leaving plenty in the tank for a metcon or WOD.

WARMUP

3 rounds of:

* 10 KB SWINGS w/ 2pood

* 10 PVC PASS THRU's

PRESS

45 x 5

45 x 4

95 x 3

135 x 1

155 x 5

155 x 5

155 x max (got 8)

Nine was absolutely possible, but while I felt strong enough, my stability didn't, if that makes sense. Interesting.

DEADLIFT

135 x 5

185 x 4

225 x 3

275 x 2

315 x 1

355 x 1

395 x max (got 5)

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1L9YCXQ8JE&feature=youtu.be

This was...something. Unlike last week, when I was grinding and nearly hitching the fifth rep at 390, I felt a lot stronger here this week. I had one, maybe two left, pretty sure. Odd thing, I managed to pinch my callous a bit on the set up, and I didn't want to reset once I started the set with my work weight. It felt like it was gonna go, so I called it a day at my required five. I'll take it this week.

"POINT 5 CINDY"

as many rounds as possible in 10 minutes, of:

* 5 PULLUPS

* 10 PUSHUPS

* 15 SQUATS

score: 9

Very nice. Especially like the way you set them down, rather than just dropping them.

Thanks! I'll admit though, there are times when I really take it out to max reps that things get progressively more obnoxious on the negatives. :P

"DANIEL"

for time:

* 50 PULLUPS

* run 400 meters

* 21 THRUSTERS w/ 95lbs

* run 800 meters

* 21 THRUSTERS w/ 95lbs

* run 400 meters

* 50 PULLUPS

time: 23:42

Bah. Not a smart move while I'm still dealing with the lingering sickness, but whatever. Had some stuff to work out of my system, but mentally and, apparently, physically. Ew. Still hacking 90 minutes later. Damnable squeaky lungs.

On the plus side, there's something about outdoor pullups at twilight with temps right about freezing. I'm not sure if it's something good, but it's something.
