Mini Challenge #1 - Sense of Sound

LittleTurtle

Recommended Posts

Hello, Druids!  Our mini challenges will be revolving around our awareness of the senses: sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell.  Each week, we will add on to the previous week.  We start this week with the Sense of Sound:

SOUND

This week, start by taking five minutes or so to stop everything you are doing, step outside, quiet your brain from the incessant chatter, and really listen to the sounds that surround you.  Do you hear birds singing?  Is the wind gently blowing through the trees?  Can you hear a bog barking in the distance?

Close your eyes.  Take deep breaths while you focus on nothing but the sounds you hear.  Try not to let any other worries or thoughts cross your mind during the time you do this.

Eventually, the goal is to incorporate this into your daily schedule just like exercise and diet, because mental health is just as important!

Tell us what you hear this week!  Be descriptive!

During my lunch time walk today, I picked "listening stations" along the way to stop and soak in the sounds. A bridge over the river, a spot near a tall stand of cotton wood trees, and a wide open meadow/wetland. The bike path is also pretty near to roads, and it was really neat how after just a little while listening you are able to tune out the cars, and hear all the little things like birds, running water and wind in the leaves.

Cool challenge, I think I'm going to integrate this into my daily walks. It's also amazing how dazzling beautiful things are when you open your eyes after listening with them closed.

This afternoon, Mama Duck and her 10 newborn baby Ducklings had a stroll in our front yard.  I sat and watched them scuttle about and could hear their teeniest, yet most excited of quacks as the rain rustled through the leaves of the tree.

It has been a long time since I tried to do this more often. I learned about this kind of meditation during Exerzitien in 2008. (I'll look up the proper English words later. ) I was working voluntary for JEV at that time and the organization encouraged us to take the chance and travel to Hungary. We tried to speak as less as possible for a week, meditated, went for hikes a practiced a bit of yoga in the morning. It was a really good week. I'm not as religious as I used to be, bit I still see, the benefit.

Today I tried it during my Tibetans. I opened the window and listend to my surroundings during the breathing exercises, between sets or when I helt my breath a little.

I heard: something that sounded like a little owl, a rooster, other small birds, thee fridge, a plane, a car, passing by kids, my own breath, and when I felt/listened to my heart beat at the end, i thought, that I could almost hear it. Very soothing.

I tried this out a few times this week, but it never worked that well. Perhaps I need to move my body to keep my thoughts from clouding my senses.

Edit: German wikipedia to Exerzitien https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exerzitien

I couldn't find the listening to your senses part there. Perhaps it was something, that our pastor had found for himself. It's a pitty, I lost the instructions.
