Miw's Take Two

Hey all!

So this is my second attempt at this. I started the February challenge but a mix of not having access to my laptop for a longer time and moving in and out three times in a span of three months made my good intentions fall flat. Then I found myself without my fitness equipment and no money to replace it – and while that is definitely no excuse for slacking off yoga, it definitely made running impossible. As in, my only shoes were some boots with a messed up heel and a pair of 9€ shoes I picked up from the sports wear that I barely dared to walk in. I am almost certain they would have fallen apart at my first attempt to run in them…

As to be expected, all the hard work I put in improving my fitness levels doing winter went to waste, with m being exactly at point 0 again. The only good news is that I did not gain too much of my weight back – just a couple of pounds. Food is also going quite well as I naturally have a taste for healthier recipes anyhow, but I have been bread-binging quite a bit, so that will have to stop.

TL;DR – I version: I failed the first challenge and now have to start from zero.

So, let's do this.

Long-term goal: have a productive, balanced life in which health, fitness and my art are the key players.

Fitness Goal: Be able to do one pull-up.

Challenge goals:

1) Do the BBWW three times a week

2) Start and get to week 6 of the C25K programme. ( since I am starting a week late, I will evaluate my success one week after the end of the challenge) By the end of the challenge, practice 30 minutes of daily morning yoga.

3) Eat a maximum of 4 slices of bread per day.

Life quest:

One finished drawing every week - and by that I mean I need to have worked at least 4h on it. Anything less counts as a sketch.

Alright, let's see how this goes.

Week 2 – failed to do BBWW on Sunday, justified due to insolation

Week 3 – too much bread on Tuesday, no yoga on Sunday. Justified due to marriage.

Alright, let's catch up a bit:

Mini Quest #1
SMART Choices

  1. Is your overall quest achievable (over a short or long period of time)?  Is it reasonable?

Long-term goal: have a productive, balanced life in which health, fitness and my art are the key players.

More concrete long-term goal: Be able to do one pull-up.

Short-term goal: get my stats back to where they were beginning of March. Aka: Being able to touch my toes, doing weighted squats on the BBWW and six full knee push-ups. (yes, my upper body strength really is that bad)

Eeeeeh, let's be honest: No. I have three overarching goals that go well against my main goal of having a balanced life, since the biggest issue with my life right now is that I tend to be scattered all over the place. Also, my short term goal is redundant

Solution: Delete Short-term goal. Put be able to do one pull-up in the backburner as "Fitness Goals," so I am clear it only accounts for the fitness part of my overarching goal.

  1. Do your 3 quests all build towards your main quest in little ways, or are you taking on too much? Do your quests have sub-quests or is it just one thing to focus on?

    1) Do the BBWW three times a week
    2) Start and get to week 6 of the C25K programme. ( since I am starting a week late, I will evaluate my success one week after the end of the challenge)
    3) Eat a maximum of 4 slices of bread per day.

One and three are fine, but 2 really does not work towards my Fitness Goal of doing one Pull-Up. Even though I want to eventually complete the programme, it is once again starting a lot of things at once, and I don't want to do that this time.

Solution: Swap C25K with morning Yoga. That will help me towards my strength goal and complement the BBWW nicely. I will still do the C25K in the background, but not part of hte challenge and at whatever pace I feel like it, then I will pick it up again at the next challenge.

  2. Are your main goals realistic? Can you scale them to smaller steps to fit your life better, even if it will make it take a little longer to achieve them?

    Now they are fine.

  3. Are your goals able to be measured and tracked?  What will you use to track them?

    Yes. I have a chart above. :)

  4. How are you grading your goals?  Are they pass/fail (“every dayâ€, “not even once over the six weeksâ€)?  Is there a reward for the effort, or are you only grading yourself on whether or not you “lose the weight†or “run the distanceâ€?

Pass or fail this time. It's about getting back into the rythm and being consistent despite what life throws at me.

  5. What is your plan for continuing/altering/grading those goals if you become ill or injured?

I will allow myself a pause according to the injury, however, right now my plan is to keep it at a slow enough pace that I don't have to worry about injury. If it does happen, grading will not be affected provided I start again as soon as I can.

  6. Did you take into consideration any special occasions (Labour Day, Independence Day, birthdays, anniversaries, etc) that may occur during the challenge?  What modifications do you need to build into your goals for those?

There is a marriage somewhere in between. I will schedule around it. Depending on how hungover I am, I might skip yoga once. Or do a "yoga for hangovers" video. Yes, those exist.

  7. Do any of your main goals conflict with each other? Will one goal make it hard to do another?

    Already fixed.

  8. Do you already have the time in your schedule to actually complete the goals you’ve set?  If not, what are you planning to do to make time for them?

    Yep!

  9. Are you trying to build multiple habits, or is all your energy focused on your main quest?

Now it is focused on my main quest. :)

Hi there, and welcome back! I'm creeping in here from Campus Tours as part of the socialising mini-quest, following you now. :> I like that you actually revised your goals as a result of the mini-challenge -- it shows you're thinking about this critically & making the right sort of adjustments. Also, I totally feel you on the bread temptation front, ugh.

I like the art sidequest too -- I tried doing the 30 Days Project once, but I don't like how it sorta-encourages rushing, and it was way too much output for my schedule. Your weekly 4hr thing sounds much more reasonably paced!

Out of curiosity, what made you pick goblin? There's no definitive guide to races so I'm interested in how people made their choices.

Welcome back! I am checking you out from your post about challenge 2. :)  I love that you have a bread goal. I love bread too. I would eat nothing but bread if my stomach would agree to it. Actually, I think I just like food a lot. Everytime someone posts about food, I get dreamy-eyed.

I didn't know there was a yoga for hangovers! Must look into this!

The 30 days project actually seems very interesting, actually, I might try it next. For the moment, though, I have a tendency of doing a lot of small shit, but rarely finishing stuff. I also have a very loose hand which allows me to sketch at lightning speed but rarely find the time to sit down and actually painstakingly draw and finish something, which is why I chose this route. :)

As for the goblin thing, I used this: http://rebellion.nerdfitness.com/index.php?/topic/18235-nf-character-generator-find-your-guild/

Alright, so today I should be doing round two of the BBWW, but my legs are killing me… and by that I mean "I am having trouble walking to the market" killing me. So, I won't be doing that and will instead be making up for it with some core strength exercises, since that appears to be the only part of my body that survived the BBWW. Hopefully,it will be gone by tomorrow, otherwise I will give my body a few more days to recover and have the core workout count instead. Hopefully by next week I will be able to fall into the 3x a week rhythm…

This is all very frustrating, but a lesson in having to keep up with your workout, I guess… you just lose them as quickly as you gained them. :/

and instance of BBWW done today, and kinda-sorta made it through the three rounds this time and I don't feel like my legs are going to give away at any moment. Gotta love newbie gains.

Daily yoga is also going fine, as is the bread thing, though I nearly forgot yesterday and caught myself just on time.

Weekly sum-up:

A bit of a mixed bag, all of my goals except the BBWW are going fine, although the latter is not being obstructed by laziness or for lack of trying…

I had to push the second weekly workout back due to recovery from the first attempt taking longer than expected, replacing my planned Thursday Workout with a core-workout instead. I did manage to complete the second workout on Friday though, meaning I could have still achieved my 3x a week goal… and then we went to the beach today.

Despite putting on a bunch of suncream, I now have burnt patches all over my body and probably an insolation, so after a brief discussion with my boyfriend we figured it would be better not to workout tonight and do it tomorrow…

As I said above, in case I get sick or injured, whether I meet my objectives or not depends on how quickly I get back on my feet once I am healed, so this is not going to affect my progress in the challenge. Also, I did a full 30 minute yoga workout this morning, so in any way, I had my daily workout. :)

Life goal: Here is the picture I submit for that particular goal. I spent more than 4hrs on it, I could have worked on it longer but decided against it purposely because I liked the aesthetic of it (which unfortunately does not come across well on my shitty iPhone camera) However, for next week, I will up the challenge and actually submit a fully-shaded picture. :)

Nice to see you back!  It's awesome that you're giving things another go.  I learned after some failure in my second challenge to forgive myself a little and worry mostly about being reflective to see what works and what doesn't.  Good luck!

Not quite satisfied with this one, a bit clumsy in the execution, I will have to up my game next week.

I've been rather busy this week, between a new MOOC I started, keeping the house and looking for a flat for next year, but I have kept out with my workout! Tomorrow is the wedding, so I will post a recap on Sunday night.

Hey all!

So, "this weekend" ended up begin a week-long hiatus as it turns out that when you are gone an entire weekend you tend to have loads of stuff to catch up on. :D

Regardless, I have kept up with my goals, although I missed out on the week 3 challenge. Daily yoga has been going fine except, as expected, the morning after the wedding. Although surprisingly it was not due to a hangover but due to falling asleep from sheer exhaustion from being the driver all weekend. This week's timing has been a bit off and not as incremental as I wished, but I am still averaging 20mins every morning and hoping to up it to 30 next week.

BBWW is going fine, I am finally starting to see some improvements and enough consistency to start upping the game and the reps.

I am a bit late on my drawings, which is the part of the challenge that has been giving me the most trouble so far since it does require a substantial amount of time to get done and needs more time set aside. Still, I am keeping it up.

Hey all!

I haven't posted in here for a while but I AM still on the ball and fulfilling my mini-challenges. :) Picks of Week 4 and Week 5 drawings will be up soon, I promise!

I am approaching the last week with a mixture of satisfaction and sadness… satisfaction that I stuck with it, but sadness that it is over. Also, trepidation at what comes next!

Anyhow, to catch up on last Week's mini, here is my all-time favourite website for diet and healthy recipes: http://eatsmarter.de

Yes, it is in German, unfortunately. However, there are pictures of every step and a quick run through Google translate should make instructions understandable even for those who have 0 understanding of German – my boyfriend can't speak two words in the language, and he still manages to follow them if needed. :)

Plus points – every recipe comes with a calorie count and a nutrition table, and "Smarter" tips on how you can add this and that plus to every recipe.

So, now it's time to start thinking of what next – I guess it'S time to start branching out in the forums!

@Sarkyfishguts – I know I want to go to the druids on the long-term. For the next challenge though, I will stick with the Adventurers. I have a very busy couple months coming up ahead and I don't want to add more "stress" on top of that – I put "stress" in quotation because exercising has turned out to be anything BUT stress, but I feel it will already be hard enough to keep up the current habits I gained.  :)
