Raze Posted July 20, 2015 Report Share Posted July 20, 2015 History copy and past time!!!! Time for some history! I am a former Marine who has always been a bit on the larger side of the scale. When I got out of the corps I stopped running because I could and I hated it anyway. I went to Afghanistan for two years and did nothing but lift and circuit training. Other than not being able to run I was in the best shape since boot camp and was actually comfortable in my own skin (which was a first). So there I was getting ready to leave Afghanistan and stopped working out as I shipped everything home a few weeks before I left. I got back to the states and everything fell apart. I ate all the things!!! I also drank all the beer which I had very little of over the past two years. Goals below!!!! Main quest: My main quest is a combination of what my main quest was last challenge. With this new main quest it focuses both my weight/BF% and strength goals into one. I have been out of the military for almost 4 years now and am looking at getting back into uniform. My main quest is to join a reserve branch of the military next year. This has been on my mind for about a year now. The extra income and benefits would be nice, but i get back to that community and if anything was to happen and space would be available I could activate and return to active duty for a short period of time to get back on my feet. Finally I have 5 years in the Marine Corps (and 3 IRR) and that time has not really counted for anything so going into the reserves would use that time towards retirement. Being a contractor doesn't provide a retirement pension and I am not banking on receiving social security by the time I'm that age so I need to really focus on my future (I have about 31K in retirement savings right now). Quest 1 limit drinking: This is making a comeback from the last challenge, however I will implement a modified set of parameters. This time around I am working at moderation again Since I failed cutting it out entirely last time. I know that goes against the NF way of small changes, but I did it once before.Well it also helped when I couldnt walk to a gas station or the liquor store and get some. I am holding myself to responsible grown up rules. I can have one drink if we go out to dinner. I get one day EVERY OTHER WEEK where I can do whatever I want. so thats 6 or less instances of one drink with dinner and 3 instances of drinking whatever I want. With Nerd fitness meet ups and the such this requires me to plan around things like that which comes with being a responsible Homo sapiens. Stat: 2 CON, 2 CHA Grading: I will get 1 point of each for each section I complete 3 or less drink whatever days6 or less single drink days Quest 2 continue eating: I've done pretty good with food choices not terrible not bad either. I need to continue focusing on tracking my food. I am good with the weekdays, but the weekend kills me. My Macro goals are average less than 2200 Calories a day per week, average less than 100 grams of fat per day per week, Average less than 150 grams of carbs per day per week, and average 180 150 grams of protein per day per week. I changed protein intake from 180 to 150. With my other macro goals to include caloric 180 grams of protein is a bit high. Stat: 2 CON Grading: For tacking food intakeA - 34 - 42 (1 pts)B - 26 - 33 (.75 pts)C - 18 - 25 (.5 pts)D - 10 - 17 (0.25 pts)F - 9 or less (0 pts) For averages per weekA - 5-6 (1)B - 4-3 (.5)F - 3 or less Quest 3 continue moving: to meet the goal of my main quest I need to run between 1.5 or 2 miles for a near top score for the 1.5 run I want to complete it in under 10 minutes and the 2 mile run in under 14 minutes (not during this challenge but by next year). I will be doing at least 20 minutes on the elliptical prior to ALL WORKOUTS that are NOT CARDIO. I will have two days a week where I run for 30 minutes with a combination of walks thrown in. I have tried C25K and the zombies run 5K trainer and although my speed increases I dont notice a whole lot of endurance running improvements so I am going to work on just running further and further once I can run for 30 Minutes straight without walking I will start focusing on distance speed training starting at running half a mile in my target pace then continue for the rest of the time in my workout then move to .75 ect. I am hoping that by the end of this challenge I can run for 20 minutes either outside or on a treadmill without stopping. Stat: 2 STA, 2 DEX Grading: A - 12+ (2 pts) B - 08 - 10 (1.5 pts) C - 05 - 07 (1 pts) F - 00 - 04 (0 pts) Quest 4 training: Since I found out that I dont like having a set program and like variety I am switching to more of a crossfit style program. Our gym does a WOD each day and I have a few that I want to do when the WOD doesnt get updated (happens from time to time) which I will keep in my back pocket for rainy days. I dont want to focus on snatches and cleans or front squats until I get back into better shape. I also wont be focusing on pull ups, but will be working towards doing them again I used to be able to get 15 dead hang pull ups in one set, but that was some time ago... I need to focus on things like push ups and sit ups as those are what I will be required to do for PFTs in the reserves again. A lot of my strength goals will improve as I drop poundage and body fat. To accomplish the above and keep me moving forward with my main quest I will do circuit training 3 days a week. Stat: 2 STR Grading: A - 18+ (2 pts) B - 14 - 17 (1.5 pts) C - 10 - 13 (1 pts) D - 06 - 09 (0.5 pts) F - 06 or less Life Quest Edumacation: I will be starting my next class during this challenge and wont be done until next challenge so I dont think I will have this be part of my goals. I am contemplating focusing on my handwritting/re-learning cursive or focus on learning a new language. I have Rosetta stone and have been doing Duolingo for German off and on for a week now and I might make that my focus during this challenge. Stat: 2 WIS not for this challenge I have two days of the week which I dont have anything planned these are usually saved for video games and spending time with the wifle. These days can also be used for additional workout or Yoga, which I need since I am NOT FLEXIBLE at all. As the weather cools down I want to start doing more hikes around the area and different parks in the area. Other than my life quest I feel that my goals are pretty solid and all play off of each other and are interconnected to push me forward to complete my main quest. For BF% I will use two methods 1) fitbit Aria and will use that 2) use the USMC body composition manual for BF% this way I will have two different matrices to go off of and average the two. Ht: 71" (5' 11")weight: 264.6BF% Aria: 42.2% USMC BF 30% average 36.1%Neck: 16Waist: 43bicep: 16Thigh:28Calf: 16.5 Not the greatest stats, but I thought it was going to be worse because I threw almost everything out the window during the off week. I drank more than I was wanting to (had something to drink each day this weekend), but I didn't drink too much in excess which is good. I'm done for the rest of the challenge I used up my remaining drink days....my calorie counting is the only thing I am doing consistently in this challenge. (even if I add the weekend foods on Monday) My calorie average is good as is my fat intake. My CARBS were looking good until the weekend hit I hate how many carbs are in adult drinks. Finally my protein was down. If I increase my protein intake that should help with the carb intake as well and lower that. I was only 15g over my average for the week in carbs, but 36g under in my protein intake. This is a new week and time to leave the week 3 slump behind me. We have the walk/run challenge this week so time to get my ass up and moving! I hate to run and I love to do zumba, which gives a pretty good cardio workout too I hate running, but I am starting to enjoy it a bit now that I am doing it for my self. And if I am going back into the military I need to run and thus I will run. I dont own a bike yet so that is on the list to do eventually. especially since there are TONS of trails around were I live. I had a traumatic experience with Zumba. I can't dance. No I mean I cant dance I screw up slow dancing some how I am that uncoordinated/cant hold a rhythm my wife has tried and failed to help me many times and I think she has even given up on me now. Well back to bad experience.
