Moros's Fourth Challenge: A legionary holds the line

Recommended Posts

I am going old-school nerd for this challenge. Here's my theme:

gallery_35603_1648_79607.jpg

In my life, I am leaving a time where I had complete control of what I did when, and going back to my "normal" job, where a lot of my time is controlled.  I am also moving from Austin back to Ohio, and my regular job is physically, mentally and emotionally toxic.

One of the reasons I joined NF last October, is that I wanted to take advantage of my free time this last year in order to become healthier.  I am healthier, though I still have a long way to go.  But for this challenge,  my goal is simple - hold what I am already doing.  Just managing that will be a massive victory.  One week in the challenge will be the week I pack my stuff and move across the country (probably Aug 5-12).  Once again, this will be a five week challenge.

My goals are nearly identical to last challenge:

Quest 1: Daily Legion Training

  •     Walk for 20 minutes daily
  •     do stretches from "Staci’s Basic Cool-Down": from the NF Academy every day
  •     add in additional stretches - my physical therapy stretches for my feet and add in   additional stretches as needed
  • daily mediation to 10 minutes
  • Post daily on NF Forums

A = 6x a week, 5 weeks
B = 5x a week, 5 weeks
C = 4x a week, 5 weeks

Stat gains:
Walking (A = +1 STA, B = +0.5 STA, C = 0)
Stretching (A = +2 DEX, B = +1.0 DEX, C = 0)
Meditation (A = +2 WIS, B = +1 WIS, C = 0)

Post Daily(A = +1 WIS, B = +0.5 WIS, C  = 0)

Total Potential Points = 6

Quest 2. Moros Tackles the Food Monster

For right now, I am going to keep what I am doing, which is level 4 on the NF nutrition levels.  Specifically, I will:

  •     keep track of my food daily
  •     drink water and unsweetened tea only 6 days out of the week
  •     Have a high protein breakfast and swap out grains

A = 6x a week, 5 weeks
B = 5x a week, 5 weeks
C = 4x a week, 5 weeks

Stat Gains
Food tracking (A = +1 WIS, B = +0.5 WIS, C = 0)
Drink water and tea (A = +1 CON, B = +0.5 CON, C = 0)
High Protein Breakfast (A = +1 CON, B = +0.5 CON, C = 0)

Total Potential Points = 3

Quest 3. Bodyweight workouts - do fewer exercise days, but have much higher intensity
Also, add in some moving-specific exercises

I'm still working on this.  This time, I will work out only three times a week, but with higher intensity, with the goal of building some real muscle mass.

  • 3 NF Recruit workouts, modified, per week
  • In addition, each time I work out, I will also do the Farmer's walk and bicep curl exercises.  Since I don't know how hard these will be for me, I will start with 20lb weights and increase as needed.  I will do five laps on the Farmer's Walk, and 10 repetitions for each bicep curl sequence

    A = 3x a week, 5 weeks - 15 times
    B = 3x a week, 4 weeks - 12 times

Stat Gains (A = +2 STR, B= +1 STR) for Recruit workouts
           (A = +1 STR, B = +0.5 STR) for additional exercises

Total Potential Points = 3

Quest 4. Challenges

I like the ideas of mini-challenges and quests a lot, but I want to keep this the same
as last challenge.  I'm slowly knocking off the NFA quests, and I'd like to try some of the mini-challenges too.  I'd like to do one per weekend.

A = 1x a week, 5 weeks
B = 1x a week, 4 weeks
C = 1x a week, 3 weeks

Stat Gains (+1 A, +0.5 B to relevant challenges)

Total Potential Points = 1

Life Quest:

My life quest has two parts: 1) move successfully, and 2) start rebuilding our finances after the move as soon as possible.  This is a placeholder for now, and I will put  more detail in later.

Looks like a solid plan. I love Farmer's walks. I did them last challenge consistently, and my grip strength improved tons

I'm amazed how much of a positive difference they make.  They also clearly help out with everyday things, like groceries, for me.

Yeah, I have noticed the carry over too.

Day 6 - A little better

I spent almost all of the day packing for our upcoming move (next Wed - Sun).  Although I was tired, I was pleased that 1) I had enough upper body strength to do everything I needed, and 2) I had enough endurance to keep going.  That's at least partially due to Nerd Fitness.

I did squeeze in some NF workouts, and joined the assassins mini-challenge.  Details below:

Quest 1: Daily Legion Training

  • yes - walk for 20 minutes daily
  • no  - do NFA stretches
  • no - physical therapy stretches and balance work
  • yes - daily mediation to 10 minutes - did this two days out of the four
  • yes - Post daily on NF Forums - big fat raspberry

Quest 2. Moros Tackles the Food Monster

  • yes - have a high protein breakfast and swap out grains

Quest 3. Bodyweight workouts

  • not today - NF Recruit workout - 1 cycle
  • not today - Dumbell curves 10 x 25lb
  • not today - Farmer's Walk - 2 laps 25 lb

Quest 4. Challenges

Day 7 - Day of sweat (not for a good reason)

hqdefault.jpg

The day started out well, with a walk and some box packing.  Then our A/C in our apartment failed, and it was 100 degrees outside.  This made doing anything or even thinking difficult.  The maintenance team in our department gave us a small portable A/C unit, but it barely dents the heat.

Details below:

Quest 1: Daily Legion Training

  • yes - walk for 20 minutes daily
  • yes  - do NFA stretches
  • yes - physical therapy stretches and balance work
  • yes - daily mediation to 10 minutes
  • yes - Post daily on NF Forums

Quest 2. Moros Tackles the Food Monster

  • yes - keep track of my food daily
  • yes - drink water and unsweetened tea
  • yes - have a high protein breakfast and swap out grains

Quest 3. Bodyweight workouts

  • not today - NF Recruit workout - 1 cycle
  • not today - Dumbell curves 10 x 25lb
  • not today - Farmer's Walk - 2 laps 25 lb

Quest 4. Challenges

  • Joined the crew of the Nerdiprise.  Decided not to be a redshirt :rolleyes-new:
  • Did some stretching - 22 minutes in all
  • Did some pushups to herd tribbles :)

Life Quest

  • Packed about 5-6 boxes
  • Gave dad birthday gifts and flammable stuff

Great challenge! That's nuts how much you're doing in addition to real life things. Sorry about your achilles, mine acts up sometimes, too.  Hope it starts to come loose soon!

Days 8 - 12 - Moving, Moving, Moving

Quick summary (from hotel room)

Monday - packed

Tuesday - closed down work computer, said goodbye to colleagues

Wednesday - got trailer for move, packed

Thursday - Loaded truck (with help)

Friday - Cleaned up, drove the first 5 hours of a 21 hour trip

I didn't get a lot of NF stuff done (I expected that), but I still did something.

Walked 20 min - all 5 days

Meditated 10 min - did this twice

High Protein Breakfast - did this 3 days

Weekly challenge - disposed of some tribbles on Monday

Life Quest - moved all of our stuff without serious injury - big win

So, I hope this is the low point, and I can start rebuilding from here.  Did treadmill this morning and will do stretching in the hotel this evening.

Day 13 - Long drive across the country

Ok, let's start with the positive:

  • Walked on the treadmill for 20 min
  • Had a high-protein breakfast
  • Meditated in the car for 10 min

The rest was just a really long car drive (up to 12 hours).  Unfortunately, the hotel I reserved on the end side is in a word, skanky.  Our room smells faintly of cigarette smoke, and the hotel clerk felt the need to write down my debit card number twice, which did not thrill me.  Still, today is only 5-6 hours more of driving.  Then, one more day of motel, and we'll be in our new place.

Days 14 - 17 Unloading, Rebuilding and Restarted

When we last left our intrepid adventurers, they were in a skanky hotel.  Since then, we:

  1. Got the keys to our new place, which looks pretty nice
  2. Retrieved some of our older stuff from a storage unit, to replace the furniture we left behind in Austin
  3. Got keys made, some groceries bought, and washed the car
  4. Got into work, and began the process of re-integrating into my "old" life
  5. The trailer arrived today, and I and my good friends unloaded it.  Good friends are more valuable than gold
  6. Had Pho at one of our favorite restaurants.
  7. Started working on an early morning walk path that won't get me run over by cars

Details below:

Quest 1: Daily Legion Training

  • yes - walk for 20 minutes daily - did this 3 out of 4 days
  • no   - do NFA stretches
  • some - physical therapy stretches and balance work - did some work for 14 minutes on day 16
  • yes - daily mediation to 10 minutes - did this 3 out of 4 days
  • no  - Post daily on NF Forums - not really, but I did not have internet for several days, so I don't feel too bad about this

Quest 2. Moros Tackles the Food Monster

  • no - keep track of my food daily
  • yes - drink water and unsweetened tea
  • yes - have a high protein breakfast and swap out grains - though hotel breakfasts are kind of nasty.  I will need to bring healthier options on future trips

Quest 3. Bodyweight workouts

  • not today - NF Recruit workout - 1 cycle
  • not today - Dumbell curves 10 x 25lb
  • not today - Farmer's Walk - 2 laps 25 lb

Quest 4. Challenges

  • Just did some high knees to make Q go away
  • Did some stretching - 14 minutes in all
  •

Life Quest

  • Drove across country
  • Packed and unpacked stuff
  • Re-started old job

Days 18 - 21:  Illness and Recovery

So, unfortunately, the following happened to me:

2szt5kx.jpg

Day 22 - Getting back on the Horse and facing foot pain again

Good news - did a lot more of my normal challenge stuff today.  We need to find a gym to go to at our new place - the exercise room at the apartment complex is not really going to cut it.  We hope to re-join the YMCA we used to go to, but we will have to wait until Saturday for that.

Bad News - At my first day back at work, my foot pain was pretty much as bad as it always has been:

animal-kingdom-king-elephants-fathers-el

One of my big motivations to get healthy the last year, and join Nerd Fitness was to not have this kind of pain while I'm teaching.  I spent a lot of time in physical therapy this year making my feet better.  So, I am kind of discouraged.  My first real teaching day is Wednesday, and the pain will probably be worse then.

Kind of feel like this:

Rather than this:

captain-america.jpeg

Ok, enough whining.  Here's what I did:

Quest 1: Daily Legion Training

  • Walk for 20 minutes daily - Yes
  • Do NFA stretches - nope
  • Physical therapy stretches and balance work - nope
  • Daily mediation to 10 minutes - Yes
  • Post daily on NF Forums - Yes

Quest 2. Moros Tackles the Food Monster

  • Keep track of my food daily - Yes
  • Drink water and unsweetened tea - Yes
  • Have a high protein breakfast and swap out grains - Yes

Quest 3. Bodyweight workouts

  • NF Recruit workout - 1 cycle - not today
  • Dumbell curves 10 x 25lb - not today
  • Farmer's Walk - 2 laps 25 lb - not today

Quest 4. Challenges

  • Did some stretching - I did "legs up the wall" for foot pain, which does help.  But, I don't think that really counts as stretching.

Life Quest

  • Prepared for new semester - got my course stuff together and prepared for over 200 students

Day 24 - First Day Teaching and Torturing my Feet

My first day of teaching was today, and my feet were put to the test.  It wasn't as bad as I feared, though it still hurt a lot.  Icing my feet and stretching helped some, but they were definitely nuked at the end of the day.  I only got three things done on the NF front:

  • Walked 20 minutes in the morning
  • Had a high-protein breakfast
  • Did 10 minutes of meditation (barely) in the evening.

Still, today I don't have to teach, so I hope to do some more.

Days 25 - 29:  Still torturing my feet and moving

It was kind of a hard few days.  I'm exhausted from teaching, and even though I am a morning person, getting up at 5am is not ideal for me.  I knew when I started this challenge that my fitness program would drop to almost nothing as the semester started, and then I would re-build it, but I wish it hadn't dropped this far.  Ok, end whine:

Here's what I did accomplish:

  • Walking - did walk for 20 minutes 4 days out of five
  • High protein breakfast - did do this five days out five
  • On Saturday, went on a long walk with my wife on a biking trail near my new home.  It's a nice trail, and I hope to do more of that.
  • On Saturday, joined a local gym, so I have a place to lift heavy objects :)
  • Life Quest: Did a lot of this - kept moving things from our storage unit, and made plans for the big move next Saturday.

So, I am not doing what I wanted to be doing, or what I hoped I would be doing, but I will not give up.  Only a dead legionary gives up.

Day 30 - Rest the feet, new gym, more furniture moving

So, although my feet were in a lot of pain this morning, I did drive to my new gym, and walked on their indoor track at 5am.  Did my walking there, then went over to the weights area.  It was crowded like Grand Central Station, and I chickened out.  I will go back

on Thursday, and start finding where all of the different things I need are.

On the other hand, I went back to our storage unit and with my wife, lifted some furniture, so I do feel like I did some upper body today :)  We are still chipping away at the unit, and hope to do a lot of moving this weekend with friends.

  • Walked 20 minutes
  • Did NFA stretching routine
  • Did daily food record
  • Did Life Quest activity
  • Did post about it

Days 31 - 33 School, school and gym

So, I made some steady progress, getting back on my challenge.  Foot pain is a real issue, but I did get to the gym, and actually did some lifting this time, which is good.

Positives:

  • Walked all three days
  • Did NFA stretching all three days
  • Recorded food once
  • High protein breakfast all three days
  • Did Farmer's Walk with 15 & 20 lbs, curls with 15 lbs

So, ok.  Not my best days , but a general improvement from the last week.

Challenge Wrap-Up

Well, this was a pretty messy challenge, as I thought it would be.  Let's start with the positives:

  1. Moved successfully across the country.  No one got seriously hurt, and none of our stuff got seriously damaged.
  2. We moved into a nice apartment.  At the beginning of this challenge, we had no idea where we were going to live.
  3. I re-started my job, and things are going ok there.
  4. I managed to walk 34 days out of the challenge - +1 STA
  5. I did eat high-protein breakfasts most of the time - 32 days  - +1 CON

Here's what didn't work:

  1. Certain goals that I wanted to keep, like meditation and posting daily to NF, just completely fell apart.
  2. Although I do have better stamina, my feet still hurt with teaching, with my weight still being a major issue
  3. Food Tracking was pretty poor - even though this is a relatively easy task
  4. My nutrition definitely suffered - I need to find ways to eat healthier on the road, and in areas where I can't cook.

So, although this challenge was not pretty, it's not a busted challenge.  I did not give up - I'm still part of NF, and I can rebuild my healthy routines from here.

+1 level, +1 STA, +1 CON

Only a dead legionary gives up.
