Hi, this is my first challenge in the Rangers, just came over from Recruits.

 

This challenge is really just going to be more of the same really from last time. I've re-planned my workouts to just be the basic StartBodyWeight routine, with some extra dumbbell work thrown in .

 

Main Quest : Gain 20kg over 18 months, build some actual muscle and get fit enough to complete 1 hour of aerobic exercise without dying.

 

We're now training for a 10K on our Cardio days - aiming to do the Greenwich Park Run on 30th August. Also, set myself a goal to actually contact the local Basketball team to try and join adult training. Would love to get back into this as part of my new regime, as I used to enjoy playing basketball in school.

 

This is just a placeholder for now, I'll flesh out point allocation and so on shortly.  One complication with this challenge is we have a 10 day camping trip in week 2, so I also need to work out a sort of "tent workout" - open to suggestions here. Most of the bodyweight exercises will be achievable, but may just need to replace Dips and inverted rows with something and crunches for leg raises.

 

Weight goal will probably be 72 Kg for this challenge, which works out about 300g per week, as suggested by mfp.

 

Life Quests : Laminate Floor and wall insulation.

Points Allocation :

  • Life Quest : These may seem a bit off the wall, but I need to stop procastinating.
    • Laminate Floor : +1 WIS (it's not that wise really ...)
    • Wall Insulation : +1 WIS (it's not that wise really ...)
  • Actually Workout While Camping : +1 WIS, +1 STA
  • BodyWeight Progressions :
    • Pull-Ups : Get to 4 strict pull-ups : + 2 STR
    • One Legged (Pistol Squats) : + 1 STR
    • Diamond Pushups : + 1 STR
    • 1 Minute Leg Lift Plank : + 2 STA
  • Train with Basketball Team : + 1 CHA, +1 DEX
  • Get up to 72 Kg : + 1 CON (I think my maths were wrong above - this is more like 500g per week!)
  • Complete 10K : +2 STA

A lot of '1's here (pass or fail) but this is where I want to be come September.

Having a concrete date for your goal is excellent.  My whole journey with fitness began earlier this year by setting my sites on the Spartan Sprint.  Now that I've completed that, I'm continuing my progress and setting my sights higher and higher.

Did you make any significant inroads toward your challenge during the off week, or are you planning to start strong on Monday?

 

I was super busy, and my nutrition wasn't its finest this week, so you could say I more or less took a week off.  Or at least what counts for a week off in my world.

First day of the challenge and off to a good start .

9k run this morning . Took a full hour but we can push the pace up next time, this is my first 'long' run. Not sure I would call this 1 hour of aerobic exercise as it really wasn't that intense , but good for endurance , and this means we should be able to hit a 1hr 10k by the end of August .

I see green herbs !

Looking good there.  Get those habits formed in the first couple weeks of your challenge and you can ride the momentum right through the next six weeks!

Tuesdays workout went quite well. Did 8 good half chin-ups (head and shoulders above the bar), so I'm going to go back to a pull up hold for eccentric pullups which should carry on building up to proper pullup progressions .

Did 8 diamond push ups on the bottom step, I'm going to carry on up to 10 or 12 of these and them try back on the floor again.

One leg lift planks did 20/20 so not far off the minute already, but these seem all about whether you're leg starts sliding out from under you.

Only did a short run for cardio yesterday (12 mins) but got split times of 4:40 so pretty pleased with my pace (covered 2.8 k in 17 minutes including warm up walk).

Weight gain not going so hot. I had weighed myself at 70 kg bit now seem back to 69.4 😕

Sounds like you need more food!

Found you. How tall are you? What's your diet like?

Cardio can be your friend or foe when you're trying to gain weight. For most people, if they start eating right away after a run or ride they can put away a crap-ton of calories before they notice it.

Cheers, I'm 6' (if I stand up straight ) so bodyspave has given me an 88kg target.

Weight seems to have bounced back this morning to 70.8 but I still look like a beanpole.

We're going away next week where we're all going on a sort of 'superhero train ride'. The missus came up with the idea of being the Incredibles . The little ones are Dash and Violet and my wife will be Elastigirl . I haven't managed to get a muscle suit so I'm just going to be a really lanky Mr Incredible 😅

I'm aiming at 2400 calories a day with at least 120g of protein, and I think that is probably enough , even with the running , as despite my whingeing I've gained 5kg sinve May. It just seems that with my more active ecercise schedule If I don't hit my target on any given day it drops down.

Eh, it's like anything else.  Because it's a process, there'll be up days, down days, and days that plain old don't make any bloody sense at all.

 

You've got the magic numbers in mind, though, and you've already seen progress.  So what you're doing at present cannot be all wrong.  Stick with it, man!

Hi sloth, thanks for checking in, we're camping this week so Internet access is sketchy , I just about caught up with your thread last night but I'm majorly behind on NF as I'm also subbing D_R and Rurik which is a challenge .

I've managed 2 cutdown workouts whilst being here, so a ok.

Really feeling the benefit of being fit with long days out carrying all the water bottles on my back. But haven't managed any runs yet.

Food wise also not so good, getting nowhere near enough protein or even calories so will probably have lost weight when I get back ...

I've had two workouts since getting back from camping and things seem to be going well.

Finally seemed to have cracked pike diamonds, I've found that in the hall tbe carpet is soft enough that I can really push into the floor to lit back up.

1 minute leg lift plank done! But just the once.

Ive got up to 5 half pullups so making progress on this goal .

Pistol squats still very difficult . I'm basically doing box squats on the couch and although my right leg is strong Ive been surprised to learn that these are much tougher with my left leg.
