SpecialSundae keeps it simple and heads for 400 Wilks

Recommended Posts

So is it pretty normal for deadlift and squat to be that close? My deadlift is miles ahead of my squat, but yours seem really close?

Depends on leverages. My squat and deadlift are pretty close, Spezzy's deadlift is about 50% more than her squat. A fair bit more is normal but neither is wrong.

If your deadlift is considerably LESS than your squat there might be something wrong (unless you're SHW or equipped).

EDITED because I can't think when I'm hangry.

Conventional powerlifter wisdom would dictate that your best deadlift should be somewhere in the range of 15%-25% greater than your best squat but as SpecialSundae says, it depends greatly on leverages. People with short arms or with long legs don't tend to deadlift quite as much relative to their squat because they have to move the bar further.

My deadlift has been pretty consistently 20% heavier than my squat when I've been training it. When I was training weightlifting and only deadlifting every 6 months, it was more like 10% more.

My deadlifts are 40% more than my squats and appear to be increasing.  My first thoughts are confidence and coordination and deadlifts are the first lift to start "happening."  On leverages:

My fingertip to fingertip reach far exceeds my height.  (1.91m vs 1.77m)  If I am not careful, my knuckles will scrape on the floor as I walk.  Long arms shorten the range of motion for deadlifts, I suppose.  Taken to an extreme, if I can reach the bar at mid-shin level with my hips already locked out, then there is no limit to the amount of weight I can deadlift.

My legs are long compared to my torso.  As well as I understand it, this affects my setup.  It increases the length of the range of motion, but this is countered by the length of the arms.  I do not know what measurement proves my legs are proportionately long.  I suppose a short torso also shortens the horizontal distance from the hip joint to the bar.  (lever arm)

Long legs also increase the squat range of motion.  There was a great video posted elsewhere.  He said the guy with the long legs and short torso hates squats.

TLDR - Long arms.  Long Legs.  Short Torso.  I think.

I have short legs and long arms and I'm a rounded upper back puller so I basically don't have think about deadlift technique. I bend over, put my hands on the bar, try to keep my lower back flat and I pick it up. It feels incredibly natural. If I want to get fancy, I remind myself that I should probably get my hips into the lift. I can also stiff leg deadlift a very high percentage of my deadlift.

Stoopid good deadlifters! :(

I'll just go and sit in a corner with Tankweazel and our massive squats.

Spin class wasn't bad. Ate lots of noodles with the weightlifters. Now going home to sleep.

Sleep is friend.

I'm just going to go sulk some more... My deadlift is actually behind my squat (at VVLL I squated 155kg with more in the tank, but couldn't get 140kg off the floor). Apparently there are/were some fundamental flaws in my deadlift setup related to my bodies leverages. Alan Thrall has a great video on it:

Edit: I apparently suck at embedding stuff...

Squats are better than deadlifts too. :)

Woke up this morning at 64.8kg after last night's Malaysian food pig out. It's all sodium bloat so I should easily get back under 63kg for the competition, but not sure I'll manage my 61kg.

I'm not going to win best lifter anyway, so it's not a huge deal on Wilks, but if I'm going to consistently weigh in over 62kg then I need a 370kg total to hit 400 Wilks.

If I remember correctly, SS has a 24-hour weigh-in and MM has a 2-hour weigh-in.  August 22 for both of you?  I will try to remember better this time.

Sorry.  I am easily confused.  Just put me in a circular room and tell me to sit in the corner.

I think Tanky had a 24 hour weigh-in for one of her competitions and I assumed that was how it was done.

She had one for a Judo comp, not powerlifting.

If I had a 24 hour weigh in then I'd probably compete in an entirely different weight class.

I was thinking of the EPF Classic in late March, 2015.  She posted a picture of her weigh-in at 52.39 kg.  I thought that was a 24-hour weigh-in.  How badly confused was I?

She weighed herself the night before to check in, I think, but formal weigh in was 2 hours before lift-off.

So I've let myself get really down today about Tankweazel's announcement in chat that she's likely to do our next comp at 63.

I completely understand why and I don't begrudge her it at all, but the fact that if she does that she'll take any records I've held and smash them to smithereens right at the bottom edge of the weight class is a hard reminder of how much more I need to do to really be competitive.

I know I can easily go up to 72 for this comp and win the class, probably even take a record or two, but I just feel like I should be able to give a good fight rather than going in knowing that I'm losing by 40kg total and 5kg bodyweight (probably 100 Wilks ;) ).

A bit late with this but you need these two things:

  • Fight your own fight
  • No one is unbeatable

(And I brought this weight on myself with my recent shenanigans.  Really should have got picture for IG of me and the guys munching down on haggis supers in our GI bottoms and team hoodies.)

She weighed herself the night before to check in, I think, but formal weigh in was 2 hours before lift-off.

Confirming this, I had to monitor my weight very closely for the couple of days I was there as I was cutting weight and needed to know how much water I was cycling by water loading.  But I did have to so a stupidly hard cut, which I didn't think would be hard.  As an already pretty lean 54 - 55kg those last few kg were going to be hard as hell (not to mention outside factors that kept messing with my focus.)

I didn't say you were unbeatable, just that I'm not beating you this year. ;)

If you do it at 63, I'll do 72 and eat like a pig for a couple of days beforehand to get the best out of it.

Shame that the best reason to lift at 72kg isn't lifting ;)

I think the only thing holding me back from lifting in 57kg is the 2 hour weigh in. If I had 24 hours I could lift 57kg no problem. Right now I'm consistently at 59-60kg, right smack in the middle. I could do it, but it would be rough.

Do you get a weight drop in the pre-comp taper?
