Kasey is Lost in the Desert

kasey

Recommended Posts

So my name is Kasey and I live literally in the middle of Australia, which means I've got pretty iffy access to fresh food, no gyms, very few people around and have been sitting at home watching tv, and feeling depressed about what I've been doing after I get home from work (nothing) and on weekends (also, nothing).

The last time I tried NF, I lasted about a week. Awkward indeed.

This time I'm aiming for simple ways to get my routines started so that I will actually stick with it this time and get out of my house and off the couch.

Goal 1 - Walk 10,000 steps a day
I have a fitbit, and I've been getting about 6000-7000 steps when I remember to wear it. I'm hoping that a concentrated effort will get me to the 10,000. It's pretty dark fairly early, so this might just involve walking around my house, but I will also be able to go on walks in the hills around my home.

Goal 2 - Do a 7 minute work out each day
I downloaded a hilarious workout app (CARROT) and it has a 7 Minute workout. I know it isn't heaps, but I just need to get over that mental hump of "I don't have any time" and actually do something. If I get it done in the morning, it seems to put me in a really great state of 'having-done-something-itis' for the rest of the day, and I am more productive.

Goal 3 - Eat 2 legitimate meals (minimum) each day
I have had some eating issues in the past, and sometimes struggle to remember to eat. Between being too lazy to get out of bed in time to eat in the morning, or prep lunches, it can get to 7pm before I eat my first meal of the day sometimes. I'm going to need to get up and have a bowl of cereal, and pack a proper lunch to take to work so that I actually have the energy to function.

My Life Goal is to actually put some effort into my to do list. Each day I will do one thing off the list and try to think about whether new additions to the list actually add any value to my life or whether they are not worth it.

I'll grade all of the goals by the following, and then average them all at the end for grades.
A - 7 days a week
B - 6 days a week
C - 5 days a week
D - 4 or fewer days

Once I have been working on it for a few weeks, I'll look at stats, but for now I just need to focus on getting up and doing something.

Hey Kasey - a fellow Aussie! I'm in Canberra :)

As far as lunches for work go I find if I prep as much as possible on the weekend and have things ready to grab from the fridge I do much better than remembering to make/pack something in the morning.

I will lose 28 kilos (from 94 kg to 66 kg)

Definitely a good plan. I have 3 lunches packed and ready to go for the first part of this week, and when the food truck comes on Wednesday I'll be making more. I'm currently very low on veggies because I just got back from holidays.

Day 1 Update

It has been a successful day so far

I managed to eat all three meals, walked 11,000 steps and did 2 quick workouts. Woop!

I've also made a couple of walking dates with some people from work now that I have told them about the challenge, so that will keep me honest too :)

Here we go - Mini Challenge #1!

  1. Is your overall quest achievable (over a short or long period of time)?  Is it reasonable? My Overall Quest is to feel better about myself, which is kind of nebulous, but it is acheiveable and reasonable, given that I have been much more comfortable before.

  2. Do your 3 quests all build towards your main quest in little ways, or are you taking on too much? Do your quests have sub-quests or is it just one thing to focus on? All of My goals build towards me looking after myself, and that will lead to a healthier me. They are smallish steps, so that they are definitely reasonable.

  3. Are your main goals realistic? Can you scale them to smaller steps to fit your life better, even if it will make it take a little longer to achieve them? They are realistic, and fairly small, while still requiring consistent effort.

  4. Are your goals able to be measured and tracked?  What will you use to track them? I will measure them each night and record it on the blog. My steps will be measured using my fitbit.

  5. How are you grading your goals?  Are they pass/fail (“every dayâ€, “not even once over the six weeksâ€)?  Is there a reward for the effort, or are you only grading yourself on whether or not you “lose the weight†or “run the distanceâ€? They will be graded on a sliding scale, A-D on a weekly basis. I like the idea of rewards.. Will ponder further.

  6. What is your plan for continuing/altering/grading those goals if you become ill or injured? Continue to eat and to do a simpler modified work out if sick or injured. If I am too unwell to leave the house, which may happen, I will ignore the step count for that day.

  7. Did you take into consideration any special occasions (Labour Day, Independence Day, birthdays, anniversaries, etc) that may occur during the challenge?  What modifications do you need to build into your goals for those? All upcoming events will not clash with the goals.

  8. Do any of your main goals conflict with each other? Will one goal make it hard to do another? They are all very complimentery goals.

  9. Do you already have the time in your schedule to actually complete the goals you’ve set?  If not, what are you planning to do to make time for them? I have time for eating and working out, I may need to cut an hour of faffing about my house to get my steps up on a low step day.

  10. Are you trying to build multiple habits, or is all your energy focused on your main quest? They are multiple habits, but all focussed on the quest in some way.

Day 2 Update

Put Lunch in my bag, and had a lovely frittata for dinner.

Hit 10,000 steps with a quick walk after work

Got home at 10pm, and did a quick 7 minute workout video, even though I ordinarily wouldn't, so I've now done three things today that I wouldn't ordinarily have done, so that is a win all round for the challenge so far.

Welcome and congrats on a successful day 1!  Sounds like you're in a really challenging environment, but you have a way forward to make the best of it.  I'll have to check out that CARROT app, it sounds really cool!

I have found that simply making the bed, first thing as soon as I'm up, give me satisfaction that I was able to accomplish something. If I do nothing but fail the rest of the day, I know I was successful at making the bed. Additionally, it starts me craving to have more successes. It takes about a minute, and has been the initial falling domino in my daily chain reaction!

So yesterday I only made it home at 10, so didn't get to do the workout. It's at this point that I gave up last time, so I need to keep on track today.

Welcome back Kasey.  I have an app called Got 7 Minutes!  It's pretty much the same thing, but not hilarious (in any way:)).  A trick that I've learned is to make packing lunch super easy.  I literally have bowls of cut up salad veggies (I hate prepacked salads) in my office fridge, so throwing a salad together is absolutely effortless - no thought or work goes into it - and then I add leftovers from the previous night.  Yay for super easy and legit lunch options :D

You might notice that someone has added a tag to your post.  This is not to box you into a corner but rather because your goals or lifestyle have links to the guild you've been tagged and we'd like to bring you to the attention of one of their guild ambassadors. These ambassadors will be able to offer you advice, encouragement and support on your goals.  You don't even have to wait around for them to come introduce themselves to you, you are more than welcome to pop into the Adventurers' board and introduce yourself to the guildies there. I am also around to answer any questions that you might have so do not hesitate to PM me.

Good Luck with your challenge

Hey guys,

Fell off the bandwagon a bit.

I've been keeping up with the life goal and eating, but didn't make steps or do the workout most days last week.

Unfortunate, but I'm going to keep trying.

Fingers crossed.

Wow. The internet has been down for 11 days. It has been awful, but I'm back.

I'm pretty on track still with steps which is awesome.

Eating 2 meals a day has been a lot easier than I expected, the quest has been the tiniest boost to make sure I'm eating each day.

My to do list is slowly getting somewhere.

My issue is doing a mini workout each day. I would love tips from people as to how they motivate themselves to do something?

Welcome back!  Sorry to hear about the internet black out (I'd go insane.. or maybe get a ton done??)  I wish I had some good advice for you about working out each day.  Today I really wanted to skip my own workout, but forced myself into it by reminding myself that I'd set my whole week back if I missed a Monday.  I think each day brings its own set of challenges that you need to face.  Steve's post on putting on your hard hat offers some great advice, though.

Best of luck this week!

My husband (part Aussie!) drove me crazy when our internet was out for like an hour. I can't even imagine what kind of Lord of the Flies stuff would go down during an 11 day outage! Welcome back. :)

About the mini workout motivators, have you thought about having a board on your wall or fridge, or a binder, or a pin board to look at/through when you just don't feel like it? I have a Pinterest board for that, and it does help me get back on board when I just really don't wanna. I do have to force myself to look at it, and then I get cranky that I've talked myself into behaving, but I feel much better later. Mine is here: https://www.pinterest.com/mslouiseable/motivation-station/
