weaver
Hiiiii! I'm going to say right away that I didn't do totally awesome my first two challenges - but if I combine the things I did achieve in them, they add up to approximately one whole successful challenge...so here I am! I'm traveling for the next three weeks, so I can't commit to anything super ambitious, but I still want to aim for things that I can achieve even with the uncertainty and upended schedules of traveling. Some of these goals may be modified for the second three weeks when I'm back home. 1. Go for a run at least three times a week. I'm thinking about probably running a half on September 20th, so I have to get my butt back in gear. 2. Drink at least four glasses of water a day. I haven't been very good about water lately, and hydration is even more important while traveling. 3. Eat at least three servings of vegetables a day. Guys...I'm going to eat a lot of not-totally-healthy stuff over the next few weeks. I've missed a lot of food from the US, and I can't deny that I'm going to satisfy some of those cravings. Still, I'm going to shoot for at least three vegetables a day to make sure I still get some actual vitamins in and maybe have a little less room in my stomach for the so-good-but-so-bad stuff. 4 (life 1). No screens after 9 p.m. whenever possible. I need to work on my sleep hygiene, and I'll be starting work earlier and therefore need to go to bed (and actually fall asleep) earlier while I'm back in the US. I added "whenever possible" because I'm not going to say no to a movie night with friends or family, and I have a work event the first week of August that could definitely involve screens after 9. 5 (life 2). Work on my thesis for at least half an hour each day. This one has been rough my first two challenges, so for now, at least, I'm trying to make the bar to success so low that there's no good reason for not achieving it. Half an hour?!? That's nothing! Okay! Let's doooooooo this! 1 Quote The impending baby challenge! Link to comment
Briniel
Following again! These sound like great goals. Put that glass/bottle of water right in front of your nose at all times! I'm on my 2l water/day quest again and if I don't have my water bottle in sight, I simply forget to drink. Good luck, have a good start tomorrow! Terinatum
Glad you are here.Challenges are about learning as well as the succeeses you earn. We earn a lot more wisdom and realization than we do, lifting more weight or running faster and longer. Please don't knock yourself for tough challenges. It's normal, expected, and shows your strength and courage when you come back! SO win!! Questions about this challenge::how many veggies do you normally eat per day?what parts of late night screen activity is the hardest? Thoughts only.Good luck ans see you around the 'hood!! weaver
Hi everyone! Sorry, I've been so overwhelmed with family, friends, and work stuff that I've barely had a spare moment to even check in here! Thanks for checking up on me! The first week was unfortunately pretty much a wash. I woke up early to work, then pretty much every day went into town for late lunch and then dinner with various friends and/or family. Meals usually consisted of food I'd been missing...which generally didn't involve vegetables. In between meals I usually had some activity or had to run errands, and sometimes in the afternoon I worked a couple more hours because I had stopped early to meet someone or take care of something. After dinner, I went back home and usually immediately went to bed so I could get enough sleep before waking up early again the next day. It was totally awesome to spend time with old friends and family again, but it definitely wasn't my most healthy week ever! I did usually stick to the "no screens after 9" thing, though! This week has been much better. I'm at a company retreat that started yesterday and goes until tomorrow, and all of the meal buffets have lots of vegetables, so I'm piling those on. I went for a short trail run this morning (oof da, I'm out of shape!), and I've been drinking a good amount of water. Screens are so-so, and I still need to make time for my thesis (I'd generally rather be spending time with my co-workers while I have the chance), but I'm feeling a little healthier, at least. Tomorrow we head back to NYC, where I'll be until the weekend after next. I'll still have to balance work, fun activities, and friends with my health/life goals, but I'm hoping I manage it better than the first week! I want to catch up on how you're all doing, too! I'm about to head for more co-worker time, but I'll try to catch up with everyone soon!!! Quote The impending baby challenge! Link to comment
Briniel
Glad to have you back Sometimes life gets in the way and your first week definitely sounds busy! I hope you'll be able to get in a bit more you-time and health-time in this week Oh and bless company buffets and the willpower to choose the healthy stuff Quote "The way you spend your days is the way you live your life" Challenges: Current | 9 | 8 | 7 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 Link to comment
suzyQlou
I think it's a good thing to be overwhelmed with family and friends. An ocean is a big thing to separate you guys, so I'm glad you had good fun back in the States. But yes. Back to the healthy goals I love your attitude about the buffets being "good" because of all the vegetables. I generally fear that kind of thing because of all the yummy looking un-healthy things. You are seeing it in the best possible light! With that attitude, and with getting out on the fitness trail, I would say you are on the right track. 1 Quote suzyQlou * Ranger Old Challenges: #1(2015) * #2 * #3(push ups) * #4 * #5(food) * #6 * #7(2016)* #8(nerdiversary) * #9 * 10(animal) * Battle Log * 11(2017) * 12(garden) * 13 * 14(biking) * 15 * 16 * 17 * 18 * 19(2018) * 20(2019) * 21 Link to comment
athousandwords
Maybe you find out that doing a full challenge while on vacation just doesn't work - no big deal! We'll all be right here when you get back. Enjoy the experience, get in lots of time with you coworkers and friends, and try to stay 'mostly' on track. You can always pick up the second half of the challenge! Quote Level 13 Ravenclaw Rebel "Eat food. Not too much. weaver
I have returned! The whole rest of my trip was just totally awesome. It was really great to spend face-to-face time with co-workers - I even voluntarily and happily spent weekend time with them! The rest of my time in NYC was filled with work, old friends, good food, and a 6.5-mile walk through Brooklyn. It was really cool to see all the different neighborhoods! I just love that city. My first week back home was all about catching up on all the bureaucracy and other stuff that I'd neglected during my three weeks in the US - nothing exciting! This week I've finally gotten back to my thesis. And that's pretty much what the rest of this challenge will be entirely focused on. My main advisor gets back from vacation on September 6th, and I want to have a final draft for her and my co-advisor to read so I can then make fiiiinal changes and submit it by the end of September (which is the absolute deadline). So besides work and a few other obligations, my life is mostly an 80s-movie montage of me furiously working on my thesis. So, my one and only goal for the rest of this challenge: Finish writing a final draft of my thesis and send it to my advisors. I'm still making some attempts at most of the other goals (except for the screens rule - I need more screen time to finish this thing!), but to get this done I just need this to be the one and only focus for the next week and a half. It's not great for my physical health, I know, but finishing it will be great for my mental health! And when I'm done with it, I'll have more time to do other things without feeling guilty because I should be working on this... I've got big plans for my post-master's life! So far I've cleaned up my second section a bit, and now I'm changing the bits that I originally wrote in Portuguese into English. After that I'll probably take another look at the third (and last) section - it might need to be beefed up a little. I've already caught up on some of your threads - looking forward to reading others during occasional breaks! P.S. For those of you who were around for my last challenge - my bloodwork doesn't show any signs of PCOS, so it looks like it's probably not a concern. Next week I have an appointment with a specialist OB/GYN to talk about a few different things, so I'll see what they think about everything. Quote The impending baby challenge! Link to comment

Briniel
Your trip sounds great and I'm so excited that you'll be finished soon. It's going to be great and it's totally okay to let other things slack during that stage of the thesis - I don't know anyone who didn't I hope everything goes well and you'll end up with a thesis you're proud of. weaver
Thank you everyone! Late last night I sent off the aaaaalmost final version of my thesis to my advisors!!! I still have to write the conclusion and take care of a few other small things - and make any changes my advisors suggest - but I already feel much better! Some of the weight has already started falling away from my shoulders. Ahhhhh. (Also, the OB/GYN basically said "you're fine, go make some babies," so...that's nice. We won't necessarily start trying right away, but we could if we wanted to!) On Wednesday we're heading out for a week to go to a wedding and do a little traveling before and after, but I'm going to try to make some time to think about my goals for the next challenge. I'd like one with results that are better than mediocre for once! With no traveling except for the first couple of days and the thesis mostly done, I have a good feeling about this next one...
