Late starters, ASSEMBLE! (Who still needs buddies?)

Folks, we all know that not everyone jumps on board right at the start. And not everyone likes to jump into an accountability group that's already chock-full of people who did start on time. (I fit both of these categories myself this challenge.) So if you're still looking for an accountability group a couple days into week 2, hit me up! Looking for regular check-ins here in the forum (1x per week is enough, more often is welcome and encouraged), and you'll get a message from me if I don't hear from you for 5 days or so, just to keep us all on track.

 

All classes and levels welcome. I happen to be a second-time Recruit with Assassin aspirations. If you want in, please post below with a link to your challenge log, and I'll ask as well that you put a link to your current challenge log in your signature if it's not already there.

Additionally, for the sake of accountability, I recommend changing your notifications settings so that you receive emails when someone PMs you at minimum; this way, if you disappear and I or other group members message you some encouragement, you'll get it no matter what. Of course, I can't see your settings, so this is a recommendation rather than a requirement.

Awesome turnout for a single day! Six is a solid team. (If anyone new is reading this, seven or eight or nine is also a solid team, and the invitation still stands!) Very glad to have everyone on board. A bunch of us have already been responding to each others' challenge threads, which is exactly why we're here, so keep up the awesome work!

 

To put it out there, we're here for both encouragement and support, so remember that if you're facing a particularly tricky or difficult challenge and want advice or anything, definitely add it to your status update in your challenge thread, but feel free to post here as well to ask your team directly for assistance. And of course to facilitate this, make sure to check in here once in a while to spot the questions we ask each other. If you're still looking for more I'd love to jump in. I'm coming back from a little break for the craziness of the soccer season and could use som extra accountability. Living alone and not having hugely fitness focussed friends can be a bit isolating.

Haha. Thanks. Yeah I play division 4 which is the lowest league where I live so don't get excited - I take it way more seriously than I need to. But I also play in a position that you're not allowed to make any mistakes in so I am a little too dedicated. Looking forward to the challenge.

I'm mostly confused by the whole RPG side of things...how do I pick my race?  Wth do I do with stats??  Levels???

Ha, no worries. The biggest thing to note for now is that you really don't need to worry about stats and levels until you complete your first challenge. As a recruit, you're Level 0 right now, until you spend 3 weeks in a challenge. Then you'll be Level 1.

 

What you do probably want to look into is the guilds. Each of the guilds has their own unique feel, centered around a core set of goals and preferences. Warriors are the weight lifters: they "opt to remain fit by pushing around the irons just lifting things up and putting them down again". Assassins are about agility, movement, and flow: "Assassins love movement and fluidity, they thrive off of competition and cooperation equally, they prize efficiency, and they are obsessed with mastering their own bodyweight." Rangers are "skilled at everything: strong but nimble, capable in bodyweight and barbell training, able to hold their own stamina-wise, and adaptable to any situation. ... a mix of ALL the guilds."

 

There are a bunch more guilds, too. The thing to do is head to the Teach me about the guilds! subforum and read through the pinned topics, which are each written by an ambassador from the various guilds to explain the basics of that guild and why you might want to join. The above quotes were lifted from the respective guilds' topics there.

 

As far as stats go, it's up to you whether you care enough to learn about them. Plenty of folks on NF don't bother because they aren't interested. I happen to enjoy the concept, and maybe oyu will too, but it's up to you. The stats that I've seen most people on NF use are based on the six classic D&D attributes: Strength (STR), Constitution (CON), Stamina (STA), Dexterity (DEX), Wisdom (WIS), and Charisma (CHA). They're basically what they sound like. The idea is to reward yourself with attribute points when you complete certain tasks or quests. If one of your challenges this time around is to do a bunch of weight lifting but you've had problems keeping it up when you've tried to go to the gym regularly in the past, then maybe succeeding would give you +4 STR and +2 CON. Maybe if you only did half as well as you'd have like you get +2 STR and +1 CON. That's kind of the idea; take a look at others' challenge threads for some ideas. I've got mine set up that way right now, so feel free to peek at mine :)

Ohh this is super helpful, thank you!  May need to give this whole stats thing a bit of thought before I launch into that one.

The assassins have already found me :D  Plus I like the idea of being in the assassins guild, following in the footsteps of Vetinari and Pteppic.

 Yeah, the generator says I'm a satyr (is there such a thing as a cis- female satyr? Is even that a thing?) or an orc. I... don't want to be an orc. No offence to orcs! that's just not ever going to be how I self- identify.

I'm a hobbit or dwarf according to the generator.  While I probably resememble a dwarf more, I went with hobbit because they are definitely on my food schedule.

It's official, folks, with the addition of Riverleaf we've hit Company status at 9 members! The question we now have to answer is this: are we more of a Fellowship (e.g. of the Ring) or a Crew (e.g. of the Firefly)? Or are we something else altogether?

 

I figure we should take a vote! Cast your vote here!

 

(Non-company members, 9 is a nice number, but don't let this stop you from signing on! Our company only increases in awesome as we increase in size!)
