Urgan Storms In With Section 9

Recommended Posts

I'm all for weeding out possible dietary causes... Just be warned it may take a while.  I may have converted someone else into having the thought that 'hey, I stopped eating dairy when for other random reasons, and I haven't had migraines since' bandwagon.  It's a fun wagon.  Hopefully you find something that works for you. It definitely could be stress, if your job is affecting their length/duration, but it could still be something else and job stress magnified the problem, but is not the original source.

The fun wagon lasts until I eat dairy for a few days in a row, and then get a migraine. Like I did last night.  Thankfully, it wasn't too bad (read: OTC meds worked enough for me to sleep)

Also, random thought: someone once told me that the base of your skull has some nerves that are somehow related to eyesight (not sure if that's true or not, but still). Do you wear glasses/get your eyes checked? Sometimes if the base of my skull is bothering me, putting my glasses on helps a lot. But then, sometimes it doesn't.

I am glad your migraines are shorter, that isn't pain I'd wish on anyone.

The very base of my skull may be tight enough to warrant its own self-care session, I won't lie. This has not been eliminated, but given the cyclical nature it was not high on the probability list.

That other woman you're describing...that was me working in tech support. Every two weeks, 3 days straight, no OTC pain pill in the world could help it, and only the sweet, sweet release of darkness could bring relief. At least I'm sometimes seeing only single days of the stabby stabby. This implies stress IS a factor in strength/duration, yes?

Ugh base of skull and neck are the worst... I feel like right now I'm maintaining a decent level of less tension while not really making any huge positive progress.  I'm fairly sure a lot of it has to do with posture - something I've been slowly working on while I'm still a desk jockey.  Stack your bones, and stuff...

That experience sounds horrible. :(  I think stress is absolutely a factor in that it totally donks up your upper back/neck/base of skull and the tighter things get over X years, suddenly migraines because it's all connected... at least that was my experience.  Sigh.  LIFE!

Yes, this is my fear, that if it's dietary I'm going to have to really get into the weeds to figure it out. Levels of stress have to be involved, since the first month of working here after a two week hiatus (got married, changed jobs at the same time) was pain-free. However, what also happened was I was on honeymoon the week a migraine should have hit, so...everything about my routine was pretty well upended. Life is cute like that.

The fun wagon lasts until I eat dairy for a few days in a row, and then get a migraine. Like I did last night.  Thankfully, it wasn't too bad (read: OTC meds worked enough for me to sleep)

And I take it you eat zero dairy products?

Also, random thought: someone once told me that the base of your skull has some nerves that are somehow related to eyesight (not sure if that's true or not, but still). I wear a rather strong prescription of contact lens--this is not a new development; i.e., I wore glasses since 3rd grade and contacts as of junior high, FWIW. So the game plan is to give neck mobilization a try (I mean, the worst thing that can happen is my neck is less stiff/tight/tense) and read Whole30 to see what it'd take to get that ball rolling. Long haul, here I come.

I typically eat zero dairy products (harder than it sounds). But sometimes I order a burger with no butter/cheese (I have places I know don't have whey in the buns, that's a whole different issue), but sometimes they put it on anyway. I typically don't say anything, and just eat it. I hate being THAT person. One place knows me, and they never make that mistake, but.... oh well. This is why I usually eat at home. If I cook something, I know exactly what's in it. No dairy.

But last night it was my own fault because I went to Outback and REALLY wanted bread and butter so I ate some. Home, 4-5 hours later, migraine. Not so fun. Stupid job offer celebrations....

Also +1 for neck mobilization.

Feel better. :(

This is going to stop. I am putting it on my challenge front burner--SPOILER--and stuff gets resolved when it's in a challenge. Funny how that works, huh?

Oh, I have zero qualms about being That Person when the "cheese" invading my meal is of the plastic variety. I have never willingly eaten "American" "cheese" (I mean, really now...we can and do better than that...) products before I even thought about cleaning up my diet. Taste and texture alone.

We all fall off the wagon occasionally with poor dietary choices, some more occasionally than others...it is its own punishment, no condemnation here.

Actively moving around constantly while sitting in my chair, back/neck stretches are on the menu full time.

I'm usually more afraid of being the 'I asked for an unbuttered bun, but you buttered it anyway, please make me a new one' kind of a person. I just feel... silly.

If they put cheese on it I usually send it back. Cheese has more proteins, and the proteins are what I have an allergy/intolerance/whatever to.  So cheese is a no. But I need to learn to say no to butter.... it's just so YUMMY! (Vegan butter is the best)

It's not silly if it triggers migraines. Period.

The thing I wonder about is mine are like clockwork, and don't appear at random in any way that directly correlates with food I've eaten in the intervening time. This doesn't mean I don't think food could be a cause, it's just that it's going to be harder to pin down. I'm considering my options, and here's what step 1 of the battle plan would look like:

- eliminate all dairy (ghee/clarified butter excepted)

- eliminate all grains/gluten

- eliminate plastic/styrofoam container use*

- neck mobility

I'll need at -least- a month to let the treatment bear out. If it doesn't stop/reduce the pain, then Step 2:

- Whole30

- vigorous massage

Failing that: get a referral to a headache specialist. This is a last resort because HIS first, second, third, and last resorts will probably be pills and/or treatment of the symptoms.

Bah, I hope you find a solution. Sounds like a pain in the neck... possibly even literally? Sorry couldn't resist.

I really, really, REALLY hope it's pain in the neck and/or anything but dairy. That said, I should be willing to try almost anything if it produces positive change.

WEEK 5 DAY 3!

tumblr_nw6p5lg8FK1r7sijxo6_540.gif

You won't be having the last laugh, migraines.

Makoto

Walk:     1.14 mi @ 21:29

Squat:    NA

OHP:      NA

BP:         NA

Deadlift: NA

Chins:    NA

The hit parade: neck!

So guys. Guys! Turns out neck stretching and mobilization helps both mid-back problems AND minor-ish pain in the head/eye region. I've yet to test it out on full strength migraine badness, but day-umn if this isn't promising. I'm immediately implementing pressure wave, tack and twist, and old fashioned stretching and so far it is keeping the "aftershocks" at bay. I'm so excited about this I'm talking about this in the wrong section, but who cares because it's the most important thing that happened today, bar none.

The anti-migraine strategy thus far will consist of the above and removing plastics from my life in the following conditions: containers that will be heated up, and containers holding liquids. Everything from removing water bottles in exchange for metal down to the cup I use to rinse after brushing my teeth will be replaced with paper, metal, or glass. The logic behind this is plastics bleed off estrogen-mimicking chemicals and that potentially throws the hormone balance out of whack...thus migraines persist. If after a month this Tuesday I'm still having the usual Event, goodbye gluten and dairy.

Bah! What gives? These numbers have been SAD lately. I'm probably going to have to increase the threshold just to force myself into greater efforts. MUST. FIX.

Yay! on fixing headaches!

Also that food dish looks amazing! You post some great recipes here!

Thanks...I am not sure I have my migraines painted into a corner yet, but I'm giving it all I have.

And thanks again, it's been kinda challenging to remember to post them this challenge--a lot of these are been-there-done-thats, including this one--but really I should post them always just so if somebody happens along they'll know what I'm talking about, yeah? I have tried many, many bean-centric non-chili dishes and they all Failed to impress...this is the lone survivor of the Harrowing. I highly, highly recommend it for its many good qualities (quick, easy, plentiful, tasty, macro-rific) and lack of bad ones.

Pinning for future use based on this.  My bottomless pit metabolism demands it.

Thou shalt not be disappoint. 3lbs of beans, 2lbs of sausage (because why settle for 1.5lbs?). 'nuff said.

WEEK 5 DAY 4!

How I felt in the gym.

Makoto

Walk:     1.22 mi @ 20:08

              47 @ 3x3

BP:         NA

Deadlift: NA

Chins:    3x4

The hit parade: mid-back, neck

I'm pretty proud of how easy all these numbers were, from walking to OHP, which is good considering this was a -rest- day session. Chins are not really getting any easier. OMG, it is about dang time Coach Rip wrote an article explicitly addressing training female lifters...well, it's not exactly a book devoted to women's programming, it's helpful. Particularly page 3. The differences lie in we need to train the deadlift more often than men and maybe don't even need a light day. I thought I'd experiment with this different perspective by doing 4x3s of the same weights I use on Tuesday (i.e., 90% of 3RM), 1x3 for deadlifts of course. Clearly I'm not pushing myself hard enough....what a surprise * rolls eyes *.  If anybody's got thoughts on this experimentation, I'm all ears. Eyes. Whatever. Arguments for or against are welcome.

That is a beautiful, beautiful number...especially considering I didn't have to cook to earn it AND I didn't eat out! Ha! Now if I could just keep this up for, oh...forever, that'd be great.

Mid-back to upper traps and neck got mobilized all day long. Some residual head pain, but it doesn't resist neck massages, so there. I feel pretty good overall, really. Energy is okay--not OMG electric, but functional--and my calluses are in pretty good shape. My grip isn't perfect, as they do continue to grow, just not at a fast pace. Oh well. I'll get on that soon enough I guess...

Intensity day was intense. Secret project work. Chins got done, barely. One more week and then...big fat zero on chins. Whew. I am so done with them. We borrowed dad's truck and went to pick up the bed frame from the warehouse, holy crap the passenger seat was NOT compatible with my shoulder/neck issues. At. All.

My brother-in-law and his wife came over on Sunday: we put the bed frame together and the boys went out and worked on digging out the spot where our new shed will go. Two more rounds and that will be ready to go--and believe you me, we are so ready to be done with the digging.

Mexican food was had on Friday--I saved the leftovers for Sunday. Saturday I had some hot dogs. Sunday we were supposed to have loaded sweet potatoes, but life happened and we ended up with fried rice. I cooked the taters for lunch on Monday, so......yeah.

Lots of time spent lying on top of a tennis ball, particularly in the neck region. Almost fell asleep on the ball, actually. I am going to get an appointment with a massage therapist as soon as we have money. Missed a moisturize session on Saturday night because #tired. Whoops.

Sunday night I was so trashed. Sore everywhere, from shoulders to elbows to my left hand to calves to feet. Ugh. Yup, it's time to increase those calories. Funny because I wasn't really all that sore directly after lifting.

WEEK 5 DEBRIEF!

tumblr_ntsq6oKXov1tpri36o1_500.gif

Taking down Week 5...

Makoto - A

Squat:    147.5 > 150

OHP:       60

BP:          73.5 > 74.5

Deadlift:  185 > 187.5

Chins:    3x4 @ 3 days

Leader of the hit parade: neck

Still plugging along here, doing just fine.

Batou - A

Avg Calories (2150-2650) - 2471

Milk Consumed - 7/7

Junk Consumed - 4/4

Updated specs - check

Shark Week aside, my weight has stayed down and my average calories are up compared to last week by over 100.  You know what this means...time to increase the calorie target! Had the good sense to not eat cereal this week...am so very glad I didn't. I cannot recall having any major gas/gut issues this week...

Togusa - A+

Mobility - 9/5

Moisturize - 13/14

Hands       - 1/1

Curfew!    - 5/5

Max Energy - 5/5

I missed a moisturize session, but dat mobility. Energy has been a little on the low side, but this is probably due to Shark Week and migraine hell. Massage and mobility promise relief from the latter at least.

Saito - A

Cat hair - 4/4

Cat claws - 3/3

Junk mail - 1/1

I like how not much mail is coming in lately--this will hopefully make keeping up with it easier.

Tachikomas! - A+

Read something - 4/3

Finished up Jeremiah, picked up the Bible and read from it, and read a lot re: secret project in between sets at the gym, lol.

Week 5 has been pretty solid, in spite of Tuesday's Event that had me down for hours, and even managed a few A+s. I'm working on mobility, fighting to reclaim my posture, and going full steam ahead on my secret project (which I will reveal at the end of the challenge, I promise). These things are the highest priority for Week 6--just one more week to go, people! For my heroic efforts in the face of neuro-muscular adversity, Week 5 gets an A+!

Next week's special missions:

Makoto

Chins go to 1x5

Batou

Avg Calories (2150-2650) > (2250-2750)

Togusa

Continue mobility, specifically working on the way I orient my shoulders when I sleep.

Make sure to carefully journal about energy levels this last week to determine if 10:30 is the best curfew time.

Saito

Ensure all junk mail is no more in time for challenge end

YAY PRs!

Despite adversity, you're fighting the good fight.  One more week!!!

One more week, guys. One more week. AND THEN NEW CHALLENGE GET.
