Hey, I'm Peggy, or NerdyPudding, or GeekyPudding or NerdyNurse... whatever you want to call me! I've been (happily) overweight all my life, but something happened in my recent past to remind me that what with my family's history of health and the fact that I am about to embark in one of the most unhealthy professions ever (nursing, ironically) I am at a pretty high risk of getting very ill, and I decided to (happily) lose weight. I've lost weight before but major life changes often derail me, and what this year's advent of plantar fasciitis adding to the burden, I've reaaaally become puddinglike: soft, jiggly and not able to move anywhere in a hurry.

So. What are my goals to combat this puddingness?

Long-term: lose 30kg (about 65lb) by next Easter

My 6 week challenge goals are:

-Lose 4kg (9lb)
-Switch to at least 50% paleo (what can I say, I like oatmeal, lentils and peanut butter!)
-Exercise 3 times a week for 30mins

All of these goals come with an "at least" tag, I'm hoping from prior experience that I'll do even better!

My Side Quests are:
-Get a driver's licence

-Get into this whole blogging/vlogging thing

I have a whole lot more goals (I'm really goal-oriented), but lately I've been getting really overwhelmed with stuff and it has become super easy to just lie in bed and not do anything. I'm hoping that with a shorter list I can achieve more! So yay, go me!!

As in, actually go.

Like... for a walk or something.

Hey Peggy, welcome!  I'm with you.  Pudding is delicious, but not so appetizing when it is jiggling around on my body.  I'd like to outrun my family's health history, too, or at least be harder to kill when it catches up to me.

So what's your exercise plan for things that won't aggravate your plantar fascitis?

Go you!

Hey Melissa!

Well a major change is just wearing the right shoes when working out. I discovered that Sketchers Shape Ups are great for my feet, I've been wearing them for over a week and my feet aren't screaming at me for sweet, sweet relief. Asics is a brilliant brand too, my work shoes are Asics GT-2000s and it's like walking on air - brilliant for the 12hr work days I do.

In terms of exercise-y exercise, I'll have to get back to you on that. I found that dance lessons, especially ballet, were really good for me to strengthen my calves without hurting my plantar fascia, but as I currently won't have the time to take part in that (booo) it's back to the drawing board to find specific body-weight exercises that'll help me. I'm gonna be experimenting in the gym a lot over the next few weeks to tailor-make a plan. I'm also going to get on my bike, which is a good workout without limping :D Go us!

I feel you on the shoes, I've got large and very wide feet so I tend to cling to a pair of shoes that's actually comfortable far past their prime. I also love flip flops despite the fact that I know they are terrible shoes overall, heh.

Maybe yoga? I've had bouts of plantars in the past, but yoga has rarely if ever aggravated it on myself. Maybe try incorporating some foot stretching exercises as well, I've had this help with alleviating my own symptoms once it's been triggered. The wall stretch in particular I found helped give me relief. I also use a ball (My dog's Kong ball, heh) to roll against the sole of my foot while I'm at home on my computer or watching TV.

Thanks for the advice, I'm glad I'm not the only PF sufferer floating about :D I have this sparkly pair of dance sneakers that are terrible for me but they're so cool looking that I can't not wear them, so I totally get the sandals thing.

I've never really tried yoga, the thought of being still for long periods sounds like hell to me. Any tips or advice on where I should begin? I already do the foot-stretching exercises, the nice physio lady gave me a demonstration on what to do, so I do those regularly.

Hahaha!  Yoga is not all being still for long periods.  If you want a faster paced class, look for a vinyasa flow class.  Those make me sweat buckets, and you don't usually hold any individual pose for very long.  They are very dynamic classes, although most do include a brief period of lying still at the end, but by that time you're ready for a rest.  I looked like I'd been swimming at the end of today's vinyasa class.  If you're interested, I'll see if I can find a link to a good online class for you.

Hello!  Assassin Ambassador just popping in to say Hi to the fearless recruits!  I also wanted to offer some suggestions for your platar fascia.  There is a website a lot of us look to for advice when things ache, its called MobilityWOD.  Here is a video on plantar fascia mobility...

Also wanted to suggest one of the NF body weight programs.  Even if it isn't something you do all the time it will give you something you can do from home which is nice when time gets away from you.  I hear that happens sometimes.  :redface-new:

Thank you for the video!

Funnily enough I was looking into joining the assassin's guild once I do my Recruits challenge :) I'll definitely look into body weight programs and bookmark MobilityWOD

Funnily enough, a friend mentioned the same type of yoga to me! I'll take that as a sign that I should try it out, see if I like it

I can relate to the puddingishness. And being a late driver. I got my license at age 34 while 5 months pregnant LOL The downside is now I drive everywhere and my bike is rusting in the garage.  :playful:

My bike is currently staring at me accusingly so I know that feeling :P but hey, never too late, right?

I strategically avoid looking at my bike when I go in the garage... :D

Hey guys! I was gonna update once a week because I'm so terrible at keeping things up to date... should I update more often?

So my first week is done, I've done 1hr/1.5hrs of exercise (which I'm not so upset about cuz it's my first week as a student nurse and scheduling took a bit of a toll on me - I'll be more vigilant next week :D). Holey moley, I am unfit!! I was horrified! I did the beginner's workout and I died halfway through the first time! Oh my god it was so embarrassing, I was tempted to just give up halfway through a push-up and stay on my face, but I pulled through.

Dietwise, there's loads more veggies in the house, which is great, and I'm cooking more which is also great. But it's super hard to give some stuff up for Paleo! Wholewheat things and oats and legumes just don't seem to be evil in my eyes, and I don't get the science behind it.

Driving is YAY! Blogging is... eh. Anyone running a blog or vlog? How do you stay motivated?

Midweek rant because I'm feeling a little sad and it's either this or ordering a huge Indian takeout, saying "sod fitness" and gorging myself on naan bread :P

Yesterday I went to the gym and did a whole hour and I felt so proud of myself! I think I can do 3hrs a week instead of 1.5hrs. I'm an optimist by nature, so maybe I'm aiming for the sun with wax wings but goddammit I'm gonna try! I feel dead but the good kind of dead, and no PF thanks to loads of stretching and massaging and lovely new shoes!

Today I went to check out a gym that had loads of different yoga classes in  the hopes that I might start Vinyasa once a week and see where that takes me (the gym I'm signed up for is one of those no-frills kind of places - great for if you want to do push-ups to "I Don't Feel Like Dancing", but not much else). Ever heard of Gymbox? I've only ever seen it in Central London, they're massive Tardis-like places with loads of floors and neon lights with a LIVE DJ and INTERNET ATTACHED TO THEIR TREADMILLS aaaand costs an arm and a leg. I asked if I could just sign up for the yoga classes and was given the kind of exorbitant fee that I'd rather put away to something worthwhile like a tattoo or a tortoise or world peace. I'l just get me a yoga mat and find my chakras myself.

Other than that, today was crappy and I have a big problem with emotional eating so it was a real struggle not to give in and pop into McDs. I managed to curb it with distraction methods (which for me involves going into a bookshop and browsing, knitting and going for a walk) until I got home, where everything is healthy and snacking is guilt free. I'm now eating a baked apple topped with nut butter and relief

Baked apple with nut butter? That sounds lovely!! And a whole hour workout? Yeah Baby!!

I don't really like yoga but I wish I did. I still try it sometimes in the privacy of my own home. One of the best youtube yoga instructors is Yoga with Adrienne. She is really inclusive - all body types, all levels, all comfort zones. It looks like she has some yoga for chakra videos too. I will have to check those out for my Mind/Body quest.

Yeah it's a super easy snack to whip up - just core an apple, microwave it and stuff it with some nut butter :D

Several people suggested Vinyasa yoga so I'm gonna try that. Adrienne has a 30 day challenge, and I'm all about challenges - maybe we should both give it a go? I've never been a fan of yoga but it's got so many benefits that I figured I should at least try, right?
