Updating this post with goals now. Yay!

Background

I've been around here for a long time, but have a little bit of a tendency to disappear. I've been back and forth a little between Rangers and Warriors - when I first joined here I was all about Crossfit, then I decided to focus on Weightlifting, then work got in the way of getting to weightlifting training and I floated into other things (mostly yoga and rugby). More recently, I have had to have an ACL reconstruction (due to my first actual rugby game  :upset: ) and the last couple months have been spent focusing on (boring) rehab. My physio has been incorporating quite a bit of (working towards) squats and deadlifts into my rehab program and I live close to a very good powerlifting gym. So, it seems like the perfect time to explore powerlifting and I am really excited about it!

Main Quest - Complete the Challenge

I've used this goal for the last three challenges and feel like I still need it - I wasn't so successful with this last challenged.

- To achieve this, I will post at least twice a week and write a final post at the end of the challenge.

Goals

Powerlifting and Rehab

Go to the powerlifting gym three times a week and do what the coach tells me to.

- Continue with the rest of my knee rehab.

Sleep

After a beautiful three months of work being 9-5 Mon-Fri, I am back in the world of shift work. It is not good for sleep. At this point, I can't aim for regularity in going to bed and wake up times, and there are going to be some days where it is just not possible to get enough sleep...so I think the best thing to do is to go for an average.

- Average of 7.5 hours sleep a night (as per my fitbit).

Study

I have just started this anatomy short course, which cost me a lot of money and I am very concerned that there is a reasonable chance I could fail it (anatomy is definitely not a strength of mine....but it is somewhat necessary if I were to be specialising in orthopaedics or sports medicine). I need to get myself studying more!

- Some study every day. It doesn't have to be heaps (a 10 min review on Memrise is enough to count). I just want to make it something that I just do every day.

hi hi hi

Hellooo!!! :)

Studying a little bit every day is definitely the way to go.

Good luck with your course!

Thanks, I think the good luck is going to be necessary.

This is a hard week to start off the challenge with. I've been on night shift since Sunday (tonight is my last night) and then tomorrow I am heading to Queensland for my follow up appointment with my surgeon and also a job interview.

That being said, I am pretty happy with how I am going with my goals.

I've managed to get to powerlifting gym twice this week and the plan is to also go tomorrow morning before my flight.

I'm also about to head to my other gym to get in a bit of the other physio prescribed rehab before work.

I have done my small amount of anatomy studies both days - just revising on Memrise.

Sleep goal is going to be the challenge for me this week. I'm probably averaging about 6 hours overall a day (quite broken up though), which is not bad for night shift. The problem is that I won't really have the chance this week to catch up on the sleep debt on my days off.

maybe do some extra mobility/rehab stuff to keep that stress from not sleeping out of your body.

That is definitely a good idea!

Sounds like you're doing well despite your schedule! Good job! Hope you can figure out the sleep thing - it's a perpetual struggle for me!

I actually feel like I have been really good with sleep this year...but I think it is at risk of falling apart due to the crazy roster in this job. Also, I have been going out a bit more due to the whole recently becoming single thing - I think this is a good thing, but also has potential to mess with the good sleep habits I've developed.

I was hoping for a quiet night at work last night, in the hope that I might get some sleep. I got the first part of that wish and the other doctor on with me probably got around 4 hours sleep...I just spent a lot of time lying there wide awake and then just did a whole bunch of paperwork.

(And yes, it is okay for us to sleep at work on nights. We basically have to be onsite in case any kids get sick...but if there are no sick kids or high risk births, then there is very little for us to do. That being said, I really struggle to get any sleep on nights because I am always so scared that I won't wake up when my pager goes off.)

My plan for after work was to go home to quickly pack, then go to powerlifting gym on my way to the airport. I was not so efficient with the packing and had decided that there wasn't any chance of getting to the gym - then discovered that my flight was delayed.

So I did make it to the gym for what I figured was going to be a horrible session - I didn't have much time, I'm incredibly sleep deprived and have pretty much just eaten crap over this run of night shifts. That assumption was completely wrong! Everything just felt really good. And it wasn't just me that felt that way, my coach commented on the fact that I was looking particularly strong and asked whether I'd had a good sleep or been eating well...

I was extremely happy with the deadlifts. It has been a really long time since I've deadlifted anything even close to that heavy and even the 82kg felt good. I was starting to struggle a little with grip, but I wasn't even using chalk.

Also happy with how the squats are going. Squats have been my weakness for a very long time (I used to be able to power clean+jerk a reasonable amount more than I could squat) - combo of awful ankle mobility, hip injury a couple years ago and now my knee. I'm not having any difficulty with slowly upping the weights and my ROM isn't that far off what it was.

Crazy day is over.

I feel like the first job interview actually went reasonably well.

The second job interview was awful. There were a number of things that contributed to this - it isn't a job that I really want, I was a bit frustrated that I was only given two days warning about the interview and there was absolutely no flexibility about the timing, which meant that I had to do it as a phone interview whilst I was waiting for my appointment with my surgeon (basically in the corridor). The main thing though was that I know that I just didn't answer the questions well...and by the end I was so wanting it to be over that I just didn't ask any questions.

Appointment with the surgeon was mostly good. Basically, I am going really well with everything except for flexion, which is a little bit behind. This isn't that bad because it definitely isn't one of the most important things at this point....but it just kinda sucks to know that I'm not quite where I should be. The exciting news is that I am now cleared to get back to flying (I'm working towards my pilot license) and yoga.

I was behind on flexion with my first knee too.  And it does totally suck, especially when you see no improvement for a few weeks.  BUT - it gets there.  When I stopped trying to force it so much, it was like it just kind of improved on its own.  And my surgeon just scoffs at flexion worries, like "you dummy this is not worth worrying about yet" which made me feel loads better.

Is this two interviews for one job, or two interviews for 2 different jobs! Either way, good on you for dealing under the circumstances you were dealt, and even doing well on the first one despite the challenges! Like a warrior!

And... congrats on being able to get back to your pilot's license and yoga!!!! That's gotta feel good, flexion or no. Double high fives for progress!  :cheerful:

I'd actually been ignoring it a bit. I've got enough flexion that it doesn't cause any issue with day to day life and I'd figured that it was pretty much the least important thing to work on. Probably went a little bit too far, though it still isn't really an issue. I think that going back to yoga will give me the motivation to work on it.

Two interviews for two different jobs. The first was for my first preference job in my home state and the second was for a job that is not up there in my preferences in the state I currently live in.

As it turns out, I was contacted today to say that I actually got the first job (even though I thought we weren't supposed to find out for another couple weeks)! Mixed feelings. It makes me feel really good that I got a relatively competitive job (must not be as awful at job applications and interviews as I'd thought). I will probably take the job as it should be better (for career progression) than any of the jobs in the state I'm currently living in. Moving back to home state will be nice...but I've been living in this state for eight years, so there is a lot that I will be saying goodbye to here.

Getting back to flying and yoga is really exciting - though I now need to work out how to fit it back in my schedule.

Whether or not you take it, YAYAYAYAY for the job offer! But I hear you on moving away from where you've been living for the last while... I've been in DC for 7 years, and while I don't know if it's my forever home, it'll definitely be difficult to step away from after building roots and establishing relationships.

Week One

Powerlifting and Rehab

- Got to powerlifting three times (even though it was a tricky week for it).

- Should have done a rehab session while I was away over the weekend. Though I have been spending quite a bit of time working on flexion (just whenever I get the chance).

Sleep

- Fitbit says that I averaged 6 hours 55, but I'm pretty certain that isn't taking into account the fact that there is one night I didn't sleep...so really my average is < 6 hours....and that is bad, even for night shift.

Study

I was so proud of myself for managing Memrise revising everyday...and then I forgot to on Saturday. I'm reasonably happy with 6/7...but hope for 7/7 from now on.

And I think it is also the fact that here is where I've really established relationships as an adult, which I think is much harder than as a child. This year has been a really hard one and has made be realise that I actually have this amazing bunch of people that support me here. I'm scared to lose them.

I have wonderful friends back in Queensland, but I'm okay with being away from them...because I know that those relationships can last despite the distance.
