Mac's Slow Learnin'

So, today is a good day. The #1 reason it's a good day is that it's the day that my best friend finished her last radiation treatment for breast cancer. Such a good day.

It's a good week because I found out on Monday morning that the crazy and evil director (basically the CEO) of my former museum employer was finally chucked out of his job, so there's been much rejoicing by and on behalf of all my dear friends who still work there. Anyone who has worked for a bad, dishonest boss who is driving a beloved organization into the ground will know what a good feeling this is.

It's also a good day because I feel like I'm making progress on this challenge! I've knocked down my two obligatory strength workouts this week, but I think I may try to do some more weights tomorrow after work. Or, maybe running. We'll see. I'm already feeling like I'm going to outgrow my new "regular" classes at the gym. For today, at least, I'm still feeling the last workout in my hamstrings and glutes, but I'm having to use almost the heaviest weights and resistance bands they have available to feel like I'm challenging myself.

I have been pretty good about tracking this week, getting a little bit better. Don't know yet what impact it has on my food choices. A few iffy choices so far this week, but I definitely haven't fallen off the cart or anything. Four more days to go this week, and I want to be strong through the weekend (my toughest time).

I have rocked my Be Healthy goal this week! I went to the optometrist yesterday and ordered new contacts (ready to pick up now), called the dentist and got an appointment for tomorrow morning, and finally got through to my PCP's office and was able to get an appointment for 2 weeks from tomorrow! And, I got a strong rec from a gal at work for a gyno who's in-network, so I'll get the PCP to refer me to her and to a dermatologist for a mole check, which I'm way overdue on. I'm upping my challenge goal to now include scheduling those two appointments as well, even if I can't get in to see the Drs. before the end of this challenge. Maybe before the start of the next one, though.

The fact that I was weirdly disappointed to get an appointment so easily at my PCP (once I was able to reach the office staff) made me realize that my procrastination was really more medicophobia than anything. But, now the die is cast and I'm on my way to being more current on my health and well being than maybe ever. And, I would never, ever have gotten this done without NF--thank you accountabilibuddies!!

Hey sorry it's taken me so long to check in with you i'm still working on getting everything together!

I'm glad today was good day especially with your friend :) Food tracking is something i havent got into the habit of doing properly yet but i find YouFood where you post pics of your food everyday a straightforward way to make me more accountable. I'm debating giving MFP a try though.

Just a quick update to say it was another good day. I think that super-blood moon on Sunday had a good effect over this entire week. Did good on eating today and went to the gym after work to lift weight (my something else workout this week). I'm building back up, but slowly, slowly:

Squats: 15 x 65, 15 x 75

Incline pushups (on bench): 3 sets of 10

Seated Rows: 15 x 22.5, 15 x 27.5 (should have started first set at 27.5, but next time)

Swiss ball crunches: 3 sets of 30

Lunges: 2 sets of 15 per leg with 15# DBs

It turns out that I have to go back to the dentist tomorrow to get my teeth cleaned, because the appointment I made for this morning was only for exam and xrays. I guess that's how this office works with new patients, but they could have mentioned it when I made the original appointment! Anyway, it'll be one more thing crossed off the list by tomorrow. I'm thinking that I need to bolster my Be Healthy goal, since I've checked off so many tasks. And, after my ritual scolding at the dentist this morning about not flossing, I know what to add: for weeks 4-6 of the challenge I will floss every night before I go to bed.

Sunday morning measurements time!:

Weight: 161.6 (162)

Chest: 33 3/8 (32 5/8)

Waist: 30 1/4 (30 5/8)

Belly button: 34 3/8 (34)

Hips: 38 (38 1/8)

Thigh: 24 1/2 (24 5/8)

Arm: 11 5/8 (11 3/4)

Have i already mentioned that I'm not very good at taking measurements? Oh welll, long term goals.

I didn't manage to get my walk/run in yesterday because i planned to do it in the late afternoon/evening after getting back from my sister's house, and instead as i drove away, i rolled down the window to air out the car and found that the window then wouldn't go back up! My brother-in-law very kindly diagnosed the problem and replaced the burned out motor, but by the time I got home, it wa late and i was wiped out. I'll make time for an extra-long walk today to make up part of what I lost. But first, I'm heading to my patio to plant some new plants I bought yesterday before it starts raining (!!!) here in LA.

Welcome back after your break. Sound like you are making sound progress with your challenge quests. For flossing, I can highly recommend doing what NF calls a "hard hat challenge" - ie 30 days and never miss 2 days in a row. It worked really well for me :-)

Glad to hear about your great week :)

Regarding flossing: I never flossed before because it was such a pain in the ***, but then I got "Plackers flossers" which makes it really easy and no need to put your hands in your mouth. (I am not employed by the company). Takes about a minute :)

Thanks for the flossing tips, y'all! I've actually turned over a new leaf and am flossing every night since yelled at by the dentist. But, my x-rays showed that I need a filling, which may end up being a crown, and every time in the past I've had a crown done, it's turned into a root canal. So, yay. Still, good reinforcement for the need to procrastinate less on medical appointments in the future.

I failed to post my final week 2 wrap up because my brandy-brand-new laptop decided to start acting up on Sunday, and I couldn't deal until today. Seems to have rebooted okay, but we'll see: I do not like being a Windows 10 guinea pig. So, finishing up business from week 2:

1. 90% FTW...and track it!

As I posted over in the Serenity Crew thread, this is still one of the things I'm struggling with. I make pretty good eating choices MOST of the time, but my two weak areas are still the weekends when I'm trying in my feeble way to be sociable--and also when I'm grocery shopping and thus exposed to opportunities for impulse buys--and the endless parade of junk food at work. I swear, I've never experienced anything like this office. Yesterday, there were bagels in the morning for someone's birthday, cookies someone brought back from a trip to Italy, cupcakes for another person's engagement, and chocolate from another trip. And today, we had an all-staff meeting for our division, which of course had to be accompanied by brownies and cookies. It's unreal. So, I'm struggling with that and don't have a solution. I did okay last week until the weekend, and then I slipped a little bit.

2.  2 x strength, 2 x walk/hike, 1 x something else

I did well on strength--my two regular classes (one upper body, one lower body) plus lifting weights on my own, which counted as my something else. I surprised myself by missing one of my walk/hike workouts because I have "saved" them for the weekend, and then lost one of my walking evenings when my car window decided to stop going up the night before rain was forecast. My brother-in-law kindly fixed it for me, but I got home too late that night to get out for a walk. On Sunday, I went for a nice, extra-long walk incorporating three big stair climbs. It was a beautiful day in LA, so I drove out to the Pacific Palisades and enjoyed the views. They have these two huge sets of stairs in the hills where the Santa Monica Fire Department go to train, so I did each of them once up and once down, plus another big set of stairs that leads down to the beach level from the palisades. On the tallest, steepest set of stairs, I passed an older gentleman who seemed that he was either recovering from a stroke or possibly had a neurodegenerative condition, because he had to stop at every step and really concentrate on getting his left leg up to the next step. I couldn't believe it when I saw him--these stairs are STEEP and there are just hundreds of them. By the time I doubled back to that stair after doing the one up the canyon, I saw him finishing up and getting back into his car, and I just wanted to cheer for him. An excellent reminder of body gratitude for everything it allows, even when it takes everything you have. So, this was a 4 out of 5, but I enjoyed all the workouts I managed to fit in.

3. Be Healthy...

I already reported that I did good on this one: got my eye exam and new contacts, got my teeth cleaned (and cavity diagnosed), and made an appointment for my general checkup, along with specialist recs. I have also added to this goal: 1) make specialist appt once I get the referral from PCP, and 2) floss every day until the end of the challenge.

4...and Wealthy and Wise

I actually had to go back and work on last week's goal this week, because I realized that I had miscalculated my savings rate. Now that I have better info, I think I need to be more aggressive with my savings, at least by a little bit. I'm starting out with cutting out any coffee purchases and buying lunch at work when I'm too lazy to pack. Planning my meals to cover the entire week will kill two birds with one stone--less chance to slip up with food choices, and a little money saved week by week. I did a bit of work with my brother-in-law on calculating my IRS and 401k withholdings, but I wasn't able to access all the info I needed via the intertubes, so I need to keep working on that this week, along with the new task of researching my rollover options for my old pension and 403b account.

Okay, that's the report! As for week 3, so far, so good. I ate some crap at the ridiculous carb-fest at work today--one mini brownie and 1/4 of a cookie. My willpower is shite to begin with, and then to have it just pummeled like this all day, every day is just hard, hard, hard. I did one of my strength workouts yesterday and went for a run today--got my 5K-ish run in under 40 mins! barely! 39:42! I am debating getting a Fitbit to have a better sense of how long my runs actually are, but that kind of rubs against my money saving goal. In any case, it was a fun run, and I felt really strong and on pace throughout. I have an evening event tomorrow, but on Thursday I'll aim to lift weights, since that seems to be a quiet night at the ol' work gym. Given my experience last week, I'm going to try to get all my workouts done by Saturday this week, so I have one day cushion...or a chance for an extra walk or run!

Great week Mac!

1.We are addressing that problem with the buddy system :)

2. Awesome old man!

3. Yay

4. I had a Jawbone once, and I used it for a couple of weeks, the got rid of it. Can't you just use your phone (Runkeeper or similar apps) instead? If you're trying to increase savings, a Fitbit might not be the best idea :)

Looks like week 4 is off to a good start!

Eh, my phone is a phablet, a Samsung Note II. I was an early adopter of the comically oversized phone, and now that I want a new, small one, ALL phones have become comically large. I miss my iPhone 3. Anyway, my phone is too big to run with and I use my ipod nano instead. I could probably upgrade that to something able to track mileage, but i got my ipod for a steal at a charity auction, preloaded by a local DJ with over 2500 songs. So I can't transfer the music, which includes many and many an awesome workout playlist, from old school hiphop to Euro dance hits to, my favorite playlist, "Select random, hit play," which includes every guilty pleasure pop dance song you ever jammed to. I'll be so sad when the battery on that ipod stops taking a charge (first world problem alert!), but it's been rock solid for years now.

Stay Strong news of the day: successfully ignored the ongoing stream of baked goods in the pantry at work...someone felt moved to supplement the leftover brownies with freshly baked pumpkin bread today. They are testing me!

Just a quick update that all is going well in week 4 so far. I think my eating choices have been solid this week, especially now that I have pledged not to eat any more of the endless parade of baked goods and chocolate at work until the end of this challenge. I took a night off at the gym yesterday to go hear an incredible live conversation with Guillermo del Toro at the Acadmey--wow, he is so eloquent and really erudite about the history of film. Fantastic.

Tonight I lifted weights at the gym, and I had to improvise a bit because it got crowded:

Deadlift: 15 x 65#, 15 x 85#

Overhead dumbbell press: 2 sets of 15 x 15#

Widegrip lat pulldown: 15 x 62.5#, 15 x 72.5# (this weight was too big a jump, I had to break it into 2 sets and my form got weak)

Swiss ball jackknifes: 3 sets of 10

Lunges: 2 sets of 15 per leg x 15#

Otherwise, I have nothing to report--tomorrow, I have to work on gathering my financial records while I'm at work, so that I can get moving on that goal over the weekend. I feel like I'm slipping behind on that front!

Great update, and great improvisation at the gym.  I have had to do similar things -- when the squat racks are occupied, maybe go over to the leg press machine; if the bench press stations are all occupied, maybe go over to the chest press machine.  Not perfect, but by far better than nothing.

Doing great!!!!

Ahhh, understand the phone-issues...

Perhaps you can bribe yourself? Resisting goodies for the rest of the challenge allows you to buy a Fitbit?

I might do that, but maybe i can get a cheaper used one....i imagine that like any and all exercise related equipment, it often goes unused by many purchasers after the first month or two. And, if any phone manufacturer ever decides to go after the small screen smart phone market again, they have a customer in me.

Great update, and great improvisation at the gym.  I have had to do similar things -- when the squat racks are occupied, maybe go over to the leg press machine; if the bench press stations are all occupied, maybe go over to the chest press machine.  Not perfect, but by far better than nothing.

I keep thinking I'll figure out when are the busy times in my new gym, but I keep getting taken by surprise. It's decently equipped, but the floor area is really small, so you're tripping over people even when you're not using the same equipment. I did finally see one other woman lifting there, though, so that made me happy. Oh, and a guy was using the machines wearing a technical workout T, jeans (with a belt), and dress shoes. So, that was notable as well.

Quick measurements update this morning from my tablet and a fuller report later if i can get my laptop to cooperate (FU Windows 10!). I was more aware and conscientious about my eating this week, and it seems to have worked:

Weight: 159.8 (161.6)

Chest: 33 5/8 (33 3/8)

Waist: 29 7/8 (30 1/4)

Belly button: 34 1/8 (34 3/8)

Hips: 38 3/8 (38)

Thigh: 24 5/8 (24 1/2)

Arm: 11 3/4 (11 5/8)

I don't really see a lot of change here, but I'll keep measuring anyway. Very, very happy to see the 150s again on the scale. That was actually my private goal for this challenge. With two more weeks to go, it would be great to exceed that.

I've been having ongoing connectivity issues with my mofo laptop so I'm behind on updating. Anyway, quick final report on week 4:

1. 90% FTW...and track it!

I will confess that I have not been tracking for the past two days. I think I've been doing okay, but I did commit to tracking for this entire challenge, so I need to get back to that.

2. Lift x 2, walk x 2, something else x 1

I've gotten back into running the past few weeks, so I ran instead of walked, but otherwise good. My something else was a couple of hours of heavy gardening in my sister's unbelievably overgrown backyard during the heat wave in LA that Will. Not. End. It was not a fun something else!

3. Be Healthy..

Still waiting on my already scheduled appointments, but I've been religious about flossing every night since I went to the dentist and got yelled at!

4....and Wealthy and Wise

I've fallen a little behind my ambitious schedule. After the morning of terrible hot gardening, I sat down with my brother-in-law and figured out that I should up my 403b withholdings for the rest of the year to max out my contributions this year. It's going to cut into my savings rate toward a down payment but after my b-I-l explained what it would save me on taxes, I was sold. I'm still working on my week 4/5 homework. I'm gonna try to make it happen!

Still Twitter free!

Oh, and a little week 5 update before I fall behind again. First of all, it's been really, really hot and muggy here in Los Angeles, but I have not let it stop me (too much). Did I mention that my neighborhood lost power for hours on Friday and Saturday night due to the heat? I don't even use my a/c all that much, but not even having a fan is pretty miserable.

Yesterday, since we oddly had the Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day holiday off at work, I went for a long, steep hike in Malibu. I thought it would be cooler on the coast, and maybe it was, but it was still kinda miserable. I didn't even make it to the end of the trail, but I was still wiped out. This evening was a little bit cooler but still humid as hell. I went for a run and even though I felt really strong, my time wasn't great, 40:32. It was fun, though. With the days getting shorter, I'm probably going to be having to run in the dark more often, so I'm on the hunt for running clothes with a lot of reflective areas.

No time for the gym tomorrow, so I'll have to do my lifting workouts back to back on Thursday and Friday, which is not my preference, but it's better than having to go back to the gym at work over the weekend! And, they've even been talking about a little bit of a cool down later this week, maybe even rain. Rain!!!

Good update for week four.  Your financial discussion sounded very grown-up.  I am sorry to hear about being without power in the middle of a heat wave.  That is miserable.

Yes, I'm trying to learn to be an adult when it comes to money. I'm very good at saving money (it must be all the Scottish blood), but I suck at planning, analyzing my options, optimizing investments or basically anything that involves having to actually think about the future. If it were up to me, I'd just keep my money in the mattress.

Yay for long steep hikes :)

If you want more financial tips there is a fun site/blog/forum I visit frequently, "Mr money moustache". Some (most) people here are extreme about their savings, but you can learn a lot.

Hope the rest of week 5 is great (and rainy!)

This weekend is much cooler here, so I may really try to take on a steep hike and actually make it to the top this time. I will check out the blog you recommend to keep me motivated to finish up my self-audit this challenge!

Week 5 is good so far except that I have been exclusively running instead of doing any lifting. This doesn't fit my goals per se, but it's actually been a long time since I enjoyed running so much, so I'm just going to go with it this week. Now that it's finally cooler and nice outside, I just can't force myself to drive over to the subterranean gym when I can step outside my door and go for a really pretty run in my neighborhood. As long as I get my 5 workouts in, I'm going to call it a win, even if it's all running.

I am really trying to keep the momentum going for this last week of the challenge, but I must admit it's flagging. But, I shall rally! A brief summary:

Measurements:

Weight: 158.2 (159.8)--I think this is a little artificially low, though. I must have been dehydrated.

Chest: 33 1/8 (33 5/8)

Waist: 29 7/8 (29 7/8)

Bellybutton: 33 1/4 (34 1/8)

Hips: 38 1/4 (38 3/8)

Thigh: 24 3/8 (24 3/8)

Arm: 11 5/8 (11 3/4)

So, little miniscule changes. I'm not really sure why I bother except that the accountability of posting seems like a good thing.

Goals:

1. 90% FTW...and track it!

Okay, I didn't track my food at all this past week. I feel like I ate okay for the most part, but I didn't track a damn thing. A sign that tracking isn't necessary anymore? Anyway, I'll try to finish it up this week with tracking.

2. Lift x 2, walk x 2, something else x 2

As I posted above, I had no patience for lifting weights this week, particularly once the weather cooled off. It's such a surprise to me how my love of running has come back during this challenge, even during the super hot and humid weather last week. Anyway, I sort of made the decision that I would just run this week, and as long as I got 5 runs in, it would count as a success for the week. Totally enjoyable, and I even got the last couple runs in under 40 minutes for my 5kish distance. Still so, so, so slow, but inching forward bit by bit.

3. Be Healthy...

Finally made it to my check-up which was disappointingly minimal, but at least I got a prescription for my recent migraines out of it. She referred me to the wrong specialist by accident, though, so I'll have more phone calls to make next week. I might not get all these appointments booked before the end of the challenge!

4. ...and Wealthy and Wise

Okay, I got nothing whatsoever done on this this week. I have no excuses to make. Total fail.

Tomorrow morning I have to get up at the crack of dawn to drive to a conference in downtown LA that I'll be at the next couple of days, totally messing up my workout schedule for the first part of the week. But, I'm not gonna let it ruin my week 6!!
