*does the secret knock*

Hello, everyone! It's me, Jenn. I'm back in the Assassins this time to shift my focus back toward bodyweight training, which I have been neglecting for a few months. I wanna get lean and buff! Can't really do that without some exercise.

I've been unemployed for two weeks now, and I have one week to go before my new job starts. My sleep schedule's gone all to hell in the mean time, so I need to get that back under control before my job starts on the 21st. Controlling my schedule will be the goal of Week 1, and Week 2 will be fairly easygoing because of the stress of adjusting to a new social situation. There are two big creativity-based events that happen for me in November: NaNoWriMo and the local gaming con, MACE. I'm planning to GM for the second year in a row, so I need to spend the latter half of the challenge prepping for those.

I feel like I've been working up to this challenge for the 7 or so months that I've been on NF. I've known from the beginning what parts of life I wanted to be in control of, and more or less what I wanted that to look like. However, every time I've tried to get all of the balls into the air at once, I ended up dropping something - usually exercise. This time around, I'm going for at least a token element of every part that I want to balance. I feel that I need to keep my qualifications for "success" as low as possible, and strive for consistency.

I also experimented with "progressive" goals last challenge - things I could work toward completing during the course of the challenge. I liked making the time to get things done, and it felt good to check things off as I went, rather than just doing an endless cycle of repetitive daily tasks. So I have 4 progressive-style goals, but they are of secondary importance to consistently doing my daily activities.

Main Goal: Maintain a predictable schedule that helps me to fulfill my responsibilities and physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

This breaks down into smaller parts:

A. Morning Ritual

-Wake Up w/o Snoozing (at 7:30 am)

-Exercise (headstand practice, 1-min plank, 50 pushups AND/OR go for a walk)

 -Pray

 -Eat breakfast

-Go to work! (leave by 8:30 am if commuting; start by 9 if working from home)

B. Evening Ritual

-No screens for at least an hour before bedtime (bedtime is 10:30; stop screens and get ready for bed at 9:30)

-Get outfit and lunch ready for tomorrow

-Take a shower & brush teeth

-Meditate (20 mins?) and/or quiet activity in dim light (plus sleepytime tea)

 -Sleep! (hopefully by 10:45)

C. Count Calories (trying not to eat more than 1500 per day)

D. Weekly Requirements (must be done at minimum once per week. More is good):

 -Clean Litter Box

 -Run and Empty the Dishwasher

 -Do Something Special for Spouse

Bonus Goals:

1) The Minimalism Game - This PVP challenge runs for 30 days from Sept 14 to Oct 13. On day 1, you get rid of 1 object. Day 2, two objects. And so on, until getting rid of 30 objects on day 30! I have felt smothered in clutter for quite some time, so I am really looking forward to this.

2) NaNoWriMo prep - The last two years, I have worked on writing up background world information for a fantasy setting in which to play tabletop RPG games. Every year, I end up retreading some ground, because in the 11 months in between, I come up with new ideas or refinements for the previous ideas. That means that I essentially have two versions of the world stored in badly-organized text documents. I would like to bring those two documents together into a well-organized whole, which will remind me of what I have already written, and help me figure out which areas I want to change. (I already know there are some things that I want to update!) I also hope that I can give myself a better jumping-off point to devise some more historical parts of the world, rather than working with the purely cosmic creation-level stuff. I need to have a couple centuries, at least, of world history in order to create the specific settings that are needed to actually start using the world for gaming.

(For those who are confused, think of this as a project on the level of Tolkien's Middle Earth. It's a life-long work that will always be evolving, and I'm a very top-down type of storyteller. My hope is to create a very lived-in feeling world for others to tell stories inside of.)

3) GM prep - CANCELLED

4) My Portfolio - CANCELLED

NEW #3) Draw Every Day - Because I love it. Because it's fun. Because it relieves stress. Because I want to start doing commissions and comics. :P Not going to grade myself on whether I miss a day. Just going to try to find a little time in my schedule eat day for doodling.

Who is Jym?

Like some other rebels, I take the "roleplaying game" aspect of NF to additional heights by writing a story about my NF character. The things that happen to Jym are a dim, fuzzy reflection of things that happen in my own life during the challenge. Some of the metaphors are more obvious than others. Magic, for example, represents self-control for me. I visualize magic as being a mental discipline, which requires focus and also the ability to stop thinking about something and actually DO it. Self-control is the same. I thought about staying with the Druids for this challenge, since it really deals more with mental discipline and inner balance, but the assassins are known for being doers who jump in with both feet. I need that momentum to carry me along until the internal stuff has become a habit.

Quick recap of Jym's story, for those who haven't read the old posts:

Jym the young drow princess ran away from home because of a disapproving matriarch. She almost immediately was kidnapped by trolls and traded to a witch for a magic potion. The witch offered Jym some of the potion in exchange for her name, but instead of giving her real name, she gave the "description" of her new status: GÃ¥va, meaning "gift". The witch offered Jym a deal, of sorts: she can fulfill her role as slave, as represented by the name GÃ¥va, or she can tell the witch her real name, and thus gain her freedom. Because she fears that assassins hired by her family may be seeking her, Jym refuses to reveal her true name (of which Jym is only a nickname). Jym tried to escape while they were visiting a harbor, but was attacked by a shark. The witch rescued her and, surprisingly, offered to teach Jym magic. While her wounds are healing, Jym finds herself left alone in the witch's strange house, where she practices her magic, but barely manages to do the simplest things. The witch returns home with a surprise gift: the little black cat that Jym encountered and named on her first day on the Surface.

Things I got rid of today for The Minimalism Game (4/1):

A pair of wedges that I got used, but didn't actually fit.

A cheap and flimsy copy of the King James version that I think someone gave me as a gift. (I have other Bibles; why did I keep this?)

Everything except the pen part of a scrapbooking set my mother in law gave me (I don't even scrapbook...)

The pair of flats I wore for my wedding 3 years ago and haven't worn since, because they pinch.

I'm going to keep a running tally, so that when it gets more intense later and I'm struggling to find things, I can count the "extra" things I already got rid of.

Following! This challenge sounds a lot like what I did for my last one, and you're right on the keeping the requirements for success low. It's so much more doable, and it's shocking how quickly 5 min here or there can add up to real progress!

Following! Love this challenge, keeping it doable is always a must! When I get overwhelmed I get nothing done and when I keep it simple I tend to get extra done, funny how that works

Anyways I'll be doing NaNo too! It will probably be the centerpiece of my next challenge, I was talking about that with Emma on her thread but I've done NaNo twice before and loved it! I'm actually editing last years novel that I wrote about 15,000 extra words on. Funnily enough, I started NaNo so that I could get unblocked on my essays (remember challenge number 1 ?) I figured if I could write 50,000 words in a month I could definitely write those stupid essays, and I did.

Whoops, tangent :P

Good luck with this challenge Jenn! I kind of want to participate in the minimalism game now, not going to lie. I have too much clutter in my life too.

Ah, getting ahead in the decluttering challenge means that the stuff isn't hanging around waiting for the day when you need the point.

I like all your other goals as well.

I love the idea of the minimalist game, but I'm intimidated by the days near the end.  Someone who lives in a house and has been accumulating things for a long time would be able to find 30 things pretty easily, young apartment dwellers may not have it so easy.  I'm thinking about assigning some grouping every weekend and going through that grouping to see what we don't use/need - the weekend before last we did shoes, we each got rid of 3-4 pairs.  Hopefully following your progress with the minimalist game will inspire me to keep at it!

Today for the Minimalism game, I got rid of:

2 pairs of pants

An old jacket

Some sandals

That puts my total at 8/3 so far. I'll probably need the extra stuff to start making up my numbers in a week or two!

Following! This challenge sounds a lot like what I did for my last one, and you're right on the keeping the requirements for success low. It's so much more doable, and it's shocking how quickly 5 min here or there can add up to real progress!

Thanks for following, guys. I will do the final "pruning" tonight to put my challenge into 'easy mode'.

Anyways I'll be doing NaNo too! It will probably be the centerpiece of my next challenge, I was talking about that with Emma on her thread but I've done NaNo twice before and loved it! I'm actually editing last years novel that I wrote about 15,000 extra words on. Funnily enough, I started NaNo so that I could get unblocked on my essays (remember challenge number 1 ?) I do remember your essays! NaNo is fun; as you can see from my description, I don't really approach it as an actual attempt to write a novel, but more as an extended brainstorming session.

I like your challenge and how you've divided it up.

Yay, new challenge! Let's do this thing!

Thanks! We are going to do great things this time, I can feel it! :D

Ah, getting ahead in the decluttering challenge means that the stuff isn't hanging around waiting for the day when you need the point.

Exactly! I don't see the point in making a big pile to trip over if I already know what I want to get rid of. :)

I'm not so sure if I will make it to the end of the game or not. Either I will end up getting rid of more than I expect, and the 400-something items will be out of my house, or I'll actually reach a point where there is nothing left to get rid of, which would be even better!

WOO!!!  I'm here and ready for this awesome magical ride!  Man GM prep!  NaNo prep!  You have a lot going on!  That's awesome and I'm rooting for you to kick this challenge in the rear!

Jym's days fell into a steady pattern: she would wake up, practice magic, fix whatever dinner Baba requested, and then spend a little time looking at Baba's mysterious books. Now that she was mostly healed from the shark attack, Jym was no longer allowed to sleep in Baba's bed, but she did get a blanket to use to make her sleeping place in the pantry. The little black cat, Wormwood, followed her wherever she went inside Baba's hut. She fed it on bits of meat from the larder, and he soon started to look plump and happy.

As the days passed, Jym was only able to get her magic to work in small spurts, from time to time. She started to stay up later and later, trying to accomplish her simple exercise: get the box of matches to move across the table, even a few inches. Soon, she was burning candles late into the night. Even though the matches started to run out, and the box got lighter, it didn't seem to get any easier. She dragged through each day, wondering what was wrong with her.

Finally, she decided to just stay awake until she had succeeded. Baba went to bed; Baba got up. Jym was still awake. Baba left on some errand and returned; Jym was still trying to break through her mental block. Finally, she slumped back in her chair, exhausted and defeated. She felt something furry brush against her leg - Wormwood stood there, look as haggard as she felt.

"Oh, sweetie, were you staying up as long as I was? You have to get some sleep." She scooped the cat up, and felt him purring in her arms. Her own eyelids drooped; admitting defeat, she went to her bed in the kitchen to cuddle with her cat and sleep.

She was awakened by Baba banging on the pantry door.

"Coffee!" was all the witch growled. This was a new task that Jym had recently learned to do. She rolled groggily out of bed and started some water boiling. As she was scooping crushed beans from the can, her spoon slipped out of nerveless fingers and rolled under the stove.

"Ugh," she muttered, kneeling down to try to retrieve it. She could barely brush it with her fingertips. Closing her eyes and straining, she was surprised when it suddenly rolled itself right into her hand.

Did I really just do magic? Did I just need to change my approach a little..?

---

*yawns* Well, I got my schedule fixed, though not exactly in the way I had intended. On Wednesday, I woke up around noon, and when it came time for bed, I couldn't fall asleep. I was talking to my spouse, who also wasn't sleepy, and around 4 am we both decided that the best course of action would be to stay up all night and go to bed early the next evening. We managed it, although we had to take a nap from noon to 3 pm on Thursday, and we went to bed at 8pm. I got up at 8 am this morning without difficulty, although my body is still confused and wants to go to bed at 1pm now!

Obviously, my goals have suffered a little during this transition. But I did do my pruned-down 'Morning Ritual' this morning. And although I haven't been tracking my calories on loseit.com, I've been doing rough estimation in my head, and I've been doing fairly well. Maybe not as well as I think, though, because my weight is going back up. :/ I need to be more strict  to try to get down to 202 lbs, which will be 20 lbs less than when I started on NF at my life's highest weight (222). I've been keeping that goal in my sights this whole time, and I was 2 lbs away before I stopped counting on loseit and started estimating. I'm really hoping to see 202 (actually, sub-200 if possible) by the end of this 6WC.

My spouse has been going crazy in the Minimalism challenge; he's discarded over 130 things so far! A lot of them are in a box, waiting to go to the Goodwill. The bookshelves have never looked so empty! I'm taking a slower pace, but it's about time to go through my closet and get rid of stuff, and that should help me catch up to him. I also got a short shelf and a little beside table today. The shelf is being used as the seat portion of a reading corner chair, and the side table is for me to keep my computer and cups of tea on. It's quite nice, although the shelf seat is a teeeeny bit too tall. I haven't yet decided what to put in the bonus storage this gives me. Maybe between discarding things and added storage, I will finally reach an equilibrium and not have any clutter lying around!

Thanks! I'm trying to take it one day at a time with the minimalism challenge. I got rid of some shoes I never wear and some pants that don't fit anymore today. :)

I have to get rid of 8 items tomorrow. That's not too hard. Maybe I'll clean off my bedside table.

Thanks! I decided to wait until after my first day on the new job tomorrow to write the next part. You could start with your "Jen of Arc" character, and just write little segments related to your day... (well, I guess you already kind of are doing that. :))

Feeling nervous about my first day tomorrow. I think the idea of the half-hour commute scares me more than the actual job! I know I can do the job well; Charlotte streets and drivers are a daily hazard to my life.

I managed to do almost everything on my to-do list for the time I was unemployed. And I did two of the three 'weekly' items for this week: got the dishes done and emptied the litterbox. Now I just need to do "something special" for Will tonight...

My sleep schedule is still not stabilized (woke up at 11 am today :/) but the job should fix that right up. My goal for this week is to establish a schedule that doesn't leave me rushed in the mornings. Rush Hour will have an effect on how early I have to get up, and thus how early I have to go to sleep. I chose a route that should be relatively off of the main thoroughfares, and going the opposite way from most morning drivers, so I hope it works out. I have to go in a half-hour early tomorrow, but I should have an idea of what my daily schedule needs to be by Wednesday or Thursday...

Last night was a birthday party for a friend, and I consumed WAY too much sushi, rum, and cake. Mmm. Caek.

Last night was a birthday party for a friend, and I consumed WAY too much sushi, rum, and cake. Mmm. Caek. Sounds like a great time, glad you enjoyed yourself and best of luck tomorrow!

BTW how is Will doing emotionally? I know he was going through some tough times last challenge, was just wondering if things have picked up for him too :)

He's doing a little better, I think. We have been talking a lot about our future plans, and trying to be honest and realistic without anyone feeling guilt about opportunities lost. I also talked to my mom some and stood up for Will, telling her to back off on the nagging she was giving him about finding a job. Thanks for asking!

This is good to hear, I was wondering about Will as well and his struggles but was hesitant to ask. It's human nature to feel guilt and regret, I'm glad you two are communicating and have each other to lean on.

I love the minimalism part of your challenge, especially since it becomes so easy to lose track of what you actually have and what you use.

Happy first day of Autumn, everyone! :D

The new job is... interesting. Going to try to process some of that by writing a Jym story post about it.

I've been too tired to actually post since Monday. But the nice thing is, I get to work from home 2-3 days per week. That saves me an hour of commute time, plus I don't have to worry about being killed in an accident. Win!

I'm keeping up with the minimalism challenge. My focus has been on my closet so far. Slowly, it is becoming lean and useful, not bloated with extra clothes I don't wear. My goal is to create a "capsule wardrobe" for each season, but I'm finding that there are a few items that I'm not yet ready to get rid of, even though I don't wear them regularly.

I adjusted my morning and evening schedules. Now that my hair is shorter, evening showers don't leave me shivering at bedtime. And I don't have time to shower in the morning again. Counting calories and keeping up with the non-essential parts of my schedule has not gone so well, but I should be able to get my footing again soon.

Looking forward to it!

Now you can spend that extra time worrying about the zombie apocalypse!

While I'm note in this Minimalism Challenge, I have taken it upon myself to "thin out" some of my Hardcover Sci-fi & Fantasy books. It pains me to do it, but I need the space.

Yeah.... that's why I shave my head.. yeah has nothing to do with not sporting the "Picard" look <g>

Once you get into a routine with the new job, I'm sure you'll get a handle on the counting calories.
