Last challenge I tried to keep things fairly simple, and that went mostly ok.  So I’m trying again.  Simple goals.

1) Keep moving

run at least 2x a week

go to martial arts classes – 2x jujitsu, 1 x kickboxing

cycle to work at least 2x a week (with allowances for weather because, scotland)

at home technique or bag work 2x a week

Dark days option – if the days get too short on me then I’ll switch from cycling to work to hitting to the gym.  All depends on daylight and temperature and dampness……..

And I want a life priority music opt out….. If I get a gig, then that wins over training.  Sad but true.  Unfortunately I’m already missing 2 of this challenge’s kickboxing classes. All the more reason to do at home technique!

2) Food

Key guidelines for me = gluten free, dairy light, mostly AIP compliant but with some rice and other gf grain.  I gotta keep getting this right, cause I keep getting it wrong at least once per challenge….. Trying really hard to have no diet related illness this challenge.

Funnsies = post at least 2 recipes in the monks kitchen!

3) Music

Play that bass 6 days a week.

Funnsies = jazz session - once a week.  Bonus points = have a trio rehearsal.  I am super excited about this - we're 2 gigs in and have already been asked for our CD!!!  Perhaps its time to actually rehearse......  We had such a blast in those two gigs, if this could turn into something semi-regular, that would be superb.  But organising jazz musicians = herding cats, so one rehearsal in 6 weeks sounds about right.

Keeping track:

Runs: 0/12

Cycle: 2/12

Technique practise: 0/12

Bass: 1/36

NF challenges: March 2018 , 12 , 11 , 10, 9876, 54321

hello dear Lou!

I love that your "keeping quiet" is equivalent to "doing something every day."

not that I know what that's like or anything. *cough*

BOOM!!

:D

Cycling to work sounds 2x week sounds like an AWESOME idea!

I wish I could do that! Jelly.

butt seriously. you're going to blow this challenge up! :D

YAY!  The cycling to work bit is good, the cycling home is surprisingly harder...... I was properly tempted tonight to phone for a large taxi - but I figured I'ld probably end up with a glaswegian taxi driver and the banter re having to taxi a bike home was going to be bad......  Imagining it was enough to get me back on the bike.  Then I discovered that cycling in the dark is way harder than daylight (yes mum, I had my lights on, and my helmet and a reflective jacket), but wow, I'm wobbly and crooked in the dark.  Make of that what you like.

Plus the man in dark clothes in the wooded bit of path was a bit creepy......  Made up for by BATS!!!!  I have no idea which species - but I saw 5 of them!!!!  BATS!!!!!!!

Hi hi hi!!!!!  Not quite every day - friday= rest day, probably from everything except work.  Yep, that does mean that some days = double exercise, thats mostly do-able.  Mostly doable until I get bonus gigs = late nights = it all falls over.

Yep, the joys of trying to do all of the things.

Brain a bit fried tonight - had a big concentrating day at work, which also took a couple of hours longer than expected - so owwie, my brain isn't happy.  So I'm now off to play some bass, then bed.  But bass will be good cause then I'm 3/3 for that.  Already looking at running and technique practise and feeling guilty cause this morning I opted for an hours more sleep.  I needed it.  Oops.

So tonight's pre-bass practise tally:

Runs: 0/12

Cycle: 3/12

Technique practise: 0/12

Bass: 2/36

That bit about taxiing home with a bike made me laugh. Whatever it takes to keep you on the path, I guess.

Creepy guys in the woods are no good.

Seriously! I felt like I was watching a movie!!

How dark is it???

I have bats living outside my bedroom. I like it because they eat all teh blood sucking mosquitos. But at night they squeak in a precise pitch that brings me out of slumber. So miserable. It makes me want to open my window and scream at the top of my lungs:  NOBODY LIKES YOU, BATS!!!

Aye - amazing the random things that will make me get off my arse.  And at least on my bike I got to go past creepy guy fairly quickly.  Good motivation for cycling home before dark.  Take that working late - working late my arse.

D:

Dark enough my dear, dark enough.  And yep I am not used to bats - they're way cool, but oh so startling how they move.

Well done for having good enough hearing to hear them bats!

Hey, that's what it's all about, though, right? You train to facilitate the life you want to live. If living happens, then so be it, because that's what the training is for.

Good luck with foodstuffs.

Aye, but that work/life/training balance malarky......  I have no idea of that at all!  I'm trying to learn not to always do all of the things.  Nope, that still sounds boring.

BATS! that is super great!

I think that you being wobbly and crooked in the dark means you're on the side of GOOD. not evil.

I just reckon it means that my balance is rubbish - AND no way should I contemplate dic cycling, cause I was seriously wobbly sober!

Ok, what've I been up to since wednesday.....

Thursday = bonkers day - it was bonkers (work, jujitsu training, then jazz at a local bar) - the jujitsu was a good session - some multiple opponent play time, I got some decent throws in, worked on breakfalls, and it all felt just fine.  The jazz was great fun - my local jazz session has finally shifted back into its old home (complete with piano and drum kit, which simplifies logistics hugely) and back to thursday (vs tuesday which is too much of a school night to get home at midnight) - and this week we had a few treats -a local drummer who's been off studying jazz was back (YAY) and several new undergrads were there, and they can really play.  YAY.

Friday = rest day - oh yes, it was more zombie day than rest day, but I survived work, then collapsed in a heap.

Saturday = oops, head cold with snooty nose and horrible headache, so bailed from running.  Still went on a fundraising walk for our kickboxing club - more as a "responsible" adult than fundraising, but we got incredibly lucky with the weather, no wind, sunshine and warmth.  Lovely.

Today = a lot healthier.  Did some technique practise (about 400 kicks in different combinations) to make up for missing training tonight.  Bass practised, and had a 4 hour rehearsal.  Am now pretty much done in.

An ok first week - ropey on the running (big fat zero on the running) and technique work (just one session), but overall, ok.

So tonight's tally:

Runs: 0/12

Cycle: 3/12

Technique practise: 1/12

Bass: 7/36

I didn't know bats could swim!?  Eeeeeeek!  Sounds like you're swimming in the dusk.  Oh the adventures that happen when you least expect.....

Well, look on the bright side. You know two places, then, where you can improve this upcoming week. It's not so bad.

Sounds like a cunning plan to me!

So far this week is going ok.  Fubar day at work yesterday.  Great start to the week..... NOT!

But I'm surprised and relieved that I've not let myself be derailed by it - lost a day of productive stuff (cause none of it got done cause of fubar) - and I ate some daim bar cake (I love Almondy Ltd soooooo much for making this gluten free! http://www.almondy.com/en/retail/cakes/almond-cake-daim),contemplated punching my punch bag (verdict = too tired from morning kicking and running, and decided that rubbish at work was not going to muck up the rest of my week.  Went to rehearsal, managed to focus, played ok, and had fun with the other basses. YAY.

Then good stuff happened = stained glass window installed in front door (photos to follow) - I LOVE IT.

Today was a much more even keel day.  Bass practise, biked to work, jujitsu tonight.  Phew.

So tonight's tally:

Runs: 1/12

Cycle: 4/12

Technique practise: 2/12

Bass: 9/36

It's getting dark much earlier than I expect, so my afternoon swim wasn't.  And apparently they can swim.  I missed the day there was a snake in the pool, fortunately.  Mostly I just get a lot of deer very late at night.  Er, around the pool, not in it.

wow!  just, wow!  Grrrr re dusk being early.  Is it balanced out by lovely long summer evenings?  Should be, but somehow I always struggle to remember them in winter.  Grrrrrrr.

Eh, shake it off. You'll be fine. Just strum one note after the other, and keep on running.

Absolutely!

Pre-work run, yep, technique practise done (kicking, cause they're a bit odd at the moment - probably lack of pracise induced, so practising seems like a good idea) and cycled to work.  Less freaky evening tonight - dark dark by the time I got home, but a running club worth of runners on the cycle path, so had plenty of requests for backies.

So almost a golden day for the challenge - just need to play some double bass.

GO PLAY THAT BASS LOU!  Hmmmm, reminds me of being a teenager.

I love the mix of martial arts and music in your challenge.

I know what you mean about biking in the dark. One summer I biked all the time because my car died. I worried about bunnies running out on the bike path, not to mention creepy humans. The headlight on my bike was not strong enough to illuminate the path very far in front of me. That meant I had to ride slowly so as not to outrun my light. No fun.

After that I stuck to the streets after dark. Cars are dangerous at night, but at least you can see them coming.

It has already started getting dark early here. You are further north so you are going to lose daylight faster. Fall equinox is bittersweet that way.

This!  Oh yes.  Only I'm going slowly cause changing gears has gone wrong - all too technical for me to fix, and no time to take the bike in for a repair.... OOPS.  Though so far the resident hare has been scareder of me than me of him.....

Man, I wish I did music too. Sensei's lately been playing with a djembe drum to get a feel for rhythm, but I think the benefit could be felt in any kind of musical work one did. That's so cool. :)

Oh the importance of pulse and rhythm......  Absolutely!

The predicted bonkers busy bit of the week was definitely bonkers busy.  Brilliant jujitsu training on thursday - great training partner, loads of revision work, both of us were working carefully but fast - learnt lots of little details, loads of throws, brilliant fun.  YAY!!!!!

Then had a good jazz session - complete with sitting in on drums for the end of the session - this was bizarre as I am not a drummer, but we didn't have a drummer, so my main goal was just highhat on 2 and 4 - managed that (phew), plus a bit of swirly stuff - my homework is to try to get the traditional swing ten to ten rhythm going plus 2 and 4 left foot (again, that essential highhat).

Friday = a collaboration between an amateur orchestra I play in plus the RSNO (Royal Scottish National Orchestra) - it was such an amazing treat getting to play with RSNO musicians - hugely inspiring, learnt stuff, was reminded of other stuff I've gotten lazy about (loads to do with section playing), and wow - the conductor is FABULOUS!!!!!!

Today = rehearsals 10am - 6pm with a throw together, utterly bonkers orchestra that meets once a year to play through a massive opera - this year its Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten - which with a running time of > 3 hours 15 mins, is definitely massive.... I'm now struggling to stand up, let alone walk, so I'm going to crawl up the stairs, hope that a bath fixes everything and sleep for as long as possible (well, have to leave home just after 10am to get through to near edinburgh in time for tomorrows run of the opera [hmmmm, how many emergency stops will be required for catastrophic orchestral failures?]).

My rash plan had been to try to go for a run tomorrow morning........ not sure if that is doable.  I'll find out.

No tally tonight cause I have no idea .

Bath, back stretches, bed.

Last night's bath was wonderful - i could move pain free this morning!  A good thing as today was completely taken up by Strauss.  Much music, huge mental focus, amazing sounds.  And I am now knackered.  Am off to my sofa with a large glass of wine and slightly trashy dinner (microwaved supermarket gf food).

Tired, happy, and life is good.

This is just SO awesome!! I used to sing lots when I was younger but haven't in years, but a couple of weeks back I was at the Royal Opera House open day (which is called something else that I can't remember right now) and took part in a workshop for rehearsing and performing a scene from Carmen. It was fantastic and definitely inspired me to think about getting into music again. You actually performed the opera today, is that right?

On the whole cycling in the dark bit; do you find that the evenings got dark really quickly this year, like overnight more or less? I'm a bit further south than you down here in London but several people I know are saying the same thing. I think something weird is happening...

Performance is a generous description - kind of a run through rehearsal with some audience - a brilliant experience all the same.  I prefer playing classical music with a little bit more precision.....

And yep, we're losing daylight fast.  But thats kind of what autumn equinox is all about.  Sigh.  Cycling more buggered up at the moment through having dropped it off for a service and the bike shop being unexpectedly closed today.  Grrrrrr.  Fingers crossed I can retrieve my bike on monday.

That sounds like a fantastic day.  I am envious.

I'll take that.  Yep.

Sounds like the kind of day where every thing goes right. Kudos!

And that, oh yes.

Needless to say this week has been a tired week.....  But I'm well proud of myself - it was a tired week, but I stayed healthy!!!!!!!  Usually I'd be tired and make a stupid food choice and get glutened.  So far this week, I've been fine.  Tired, yep, but fine.  YAY.

Cause of the tired thing its been a bit light on training - had two good jujitsu sessions, and this morning ran 5k, but not much else.....  Some more bass playing, but also had 3 days off that, cause they were needed.  So, a bit of "listen to your body" going on.

Its all going ok. Well, except for DIY - usual story, complete underestimation of the amount of preparation required.....  I'm still prepping, had hoped to have one undercoat and one top coat on the back half of my front door..... oh well, that'll be the door propped open for most of the week then..... (I can lock the inner door, so my double basses will be slightly cold, but safe).

Catch up tally:

Runs: 3/12

Cycle: 5.5/12

Technique practise: 3/12

Bass: 17/36 (somehow this doesn't really reflect the full horror of 23 hours playing between thursday and tuesday)

Sooooooo looks like I need a wee bit more focus on techniques and running...  Am I beating myself up over this? Nope.  Am I planning a bit of a reset.  Yep.
