Level Grinding: Tanktimus Sticks to What Works

As I make my third foray into the lovely, insane, crazy, awesome, incredible and crazy (yes, I used it twice on purpose) world that is a Ranger 6WC, I have once again decided to stick with what works. So brace yourselves, this is going to be familiar. What will be different is all the special events I have coming up. The very first weekend of the challenge I will be going off with some buddies of mine to a cabin in the middle of nowhere for a guy’s weekend. There will be no pretense of healthy eating that weekend :D. The second week of the challenge our very own Wolfenstien will be coming down for my first NF meetup and a trip to Enchanted Rock State Park, with a long stop in Fredericksburg on the way back. Finally, and most important, THANKSGIVING OMG EAT ALL THE THINGS! will be during this challenge. With those things in mind, my goals will be very similar to last time but with some caveats to account for the things above. Also, by doing this I just have to reset the numbers on my progress bars without having to change them completely.

 

Goal 1: 15 Run Days.

I’m currently using the Runkeeper 5k training program, which is working for me. The Day Wolf and I go to Enchanted Rock will count as a run day, since we’ll be getting in some good miles.

 

Goal 2: 15 Lift days.

This is still working for me and I am getting stronger. I do a program where you test for 1RM every seven weeks. This time around I will be testing on week 2, for 1RM on Dead Lift (current 245#), Squat (Current 150#, I didn’t have access to a squat rack till recently), Bench (Current 200#) and Overhead Press (current 100#). I also do an extensive bodyweight warm up on lift days. Friday of week 1 an extended bodyweight workout is going to count for lift day due to the out of town trip with buddies.

 

Goal 3: Nutrition

Cook Paleo and no more than 3 variances (either eating out or non-paleo or both) per week. I’m going to work in some exceptions here. The guy’s weekend will not be tracked. To counter this somewhat I’m going to shoot for no variances the rest of week 1 and my week 2 variances may only occur during Wolf’s visit. Then of course Thanksgiving Day is forever exempt from any dietary restrictions in my heart. I will, however, shoot for only 1 variance allowed that week outside of Thanksgiving Day.

 

Goal 4: Domesting Rangering

Vacuum and Clean Bathroom and Kitchen Once a week, along with getting laundry done once a week. At some point mop my kitchen once during the challenge.

 

Not a listed goal, but I do plan on keeping up with the Mini-challenge that Dark_Raider has brewing in his over-clocked brain of his.

I’m calling this level-grinding for a couple of reasons. One, I’m still working on weight-loss, so I want to focus on the fundamentals. Two, I’m still building up a base of strength and endurance for awesome to come in the future. I’m still working on doing a pull-up and being able to run a 5k without stopping. As much fun as Rangerbrain can be, I want to get the essentials locked in before I start getting fancy with my goals. I tried fancy the first time I was on NF and it didn’t work. Simple and consistent does work, hence the proud and unashamed rehashing of my goals from the last two challenges. I look forward to going through this challenge with you my Ranger Siblings!

I love this. Period. Because honestly, why do we level grind? Why do we find it so much fun in video games, but not life?! *gets a bit of high on philosophical stimulation* Building the basics is essential, will be following along from the beginning for this one! This sounds akin to my first attempt as well, and I need to remember to do the same. :)

Never underestimate the power of what works. Following... Especially hoping some domestic rangering enthusiasm will rub off on me.

Just start small with one thing. I didn't go from nothing to everything overnight. Maybe have one, easy, measurable goal for this challenge to start.

Following along as always. Seems like this is going to be a good one.

I didn't mention it in the rush of week zero throwing my challenge out there enthusiasm, but I am not taking zero week off. Today was squats and bench and I did really well on squats and well on bench. I tweaked something in my lumbar region toward the end of the squats, but was able to finish the workout. My back has been stiff and a little sore, but as I move around the hospital it loosens up. I'm going to slather some muscle rub on my lower back as thick as I can before bed. Run day tomorrow. I got all my adulting done today, paid rent for next month, vacuumed, cleaned the kitchen and bathroom and did laundry. I'll start tracking in the progress bars once the challenge officially begins next week.
