Introduction:

I'm doing my second Ranger challenge after over two years in the Warriors. Last challenge, I was focussed on keeping together my diet and exercise after moving back home to Indiana to reboot life and get a fresh start. I managed to stay active and got back on the low carb and meaty glory of the ketogenic diet. Doing so I managed to lose about 5-10 pounds. I want to maintain this rate of weight loss.

Right at the beginning of the challenge I start my new job. I'm working a temporary position at an Amazon warehouse. I'll be on my feet for 10 hour shifts, 40-50 hours a week... on the night shift. This is a big transition from my grad student desk and computer work and being home most of every day. So I've got to adapt to the new level of activity and being nocturnal. Further, I want to maintain my barbell training and use it to maintain strength and burn extra calories. This is going to put a lot of stress on my body so managing stress will also be key.

Motivation: "There are only three types of motivation: money, fear, and hunger." -- Ron Swanson

Goal 1: Ketogenic nutrition.

kecRwpJ.gif

First off, avoid those carbs. I might be tempted to indulge given the constant energy output, but I need to keep them gone.

I need to pay attention to snacks, supplements, and water to make sure I stay well adapted.

I'm staying round the clock on this one. 42 pts. total.

Goal 2: Maintain a regular workout routine.

3ffdc01b1118d71d403b5e0a78a9239e.jpg

I so, so, so want to pull a 4 plate deadlift, but...

I'm cutting on the standard ketogenic diet and a lot of my energy (and pateience) is going to be used up at work so heavy work will be limited if even existent. I'll be mostly doing barbell complexes and circuits 30 min a piece at least 3x / week. Shoot for 4x, and hope for 5x. Partly to burn extra calories,

So do at least 18 days to pass, up to 30 lifting days if I feel awesome. Partly to burn extra calories, but I just don't want to break the habit of lifting something regularly.

Goal 3: Mobility

"Doctor: Do you have any history of mental illness in your family?

Ron Swanson: I had an Uncle who once did yoga."

I neglect the shit out of mobility work. I'm going to use my work schedule to stay on top of this. Just before/after work and during breaks, do some stretching. I know I'll be dying to stretch out my calves when I'm on my feet all day.

I'll aim for an average of 3 every work day to pass. Shoot for 4x, and again hope for 5x. I'll allow bonus points for before/after workouts.

Life Goal 1: Makin' bacon.

"Capitalism: God's way of determining who is smart, and who is poor." -- Swanson Pyramid of Greatness

Basically, the more I work, the more money I get in the form of bonuses during this holiday period. No need to grade. The bonus is its own goal. But I'll keep track of how much I'm getting to stay encouraged. I don't like the idea of posting my own wages, so I'll track this in a fictitious currency, the #, as in # of bacon.

I currently owe #1796.

Potentially, I can earn #470 after I take out gas money, food money, and the regular bills. That's not as much as I hoped for (when is it ever) but that's quite a dent for 6 weeks.

I'll grade this goal as a percentage of the #470 paid off.

Sidequest 1: The Swanson Pyramid of Greatness.

index_zpsdkauumdv.jpeg

Mainly for shits and giggles... I wrote a short program that randomly selects the entries on the "Swanson pyramid of greatness." There are 45 entries. So if I start on Friday we can do all of them. I say we because I'm inviting you to do them all. I'll do my best to post them daily. Part of this is for accountability to get me to post daily. I think a big part of the last challenge's success was that I was on here (almost) every day posting.

So I'll post a random selection from the pyramid and incorporate the "lesson" into my day somehow with the goal of inspiring and improving the efforts toward my goals. The entries are:

Lv1, Honor: If you need it defined, you do not have it at all.
Lv2, America: The only country that matters. If you want to experience other "cultures", use and atlas or a HAM radio.
Lv2, Buffets: Whenever available. Choose quantity over quality, but beef over everything else.
Lv3, Weapons: Best used whenever you can.
Lv3, Wood working: Man imposing his will on nature with tools.
Lv3, Welfare avoidance
Lv4, Teamwork: Work together as if your life depends on it... IT DOES!
Lv4, Selfishness: Take what's yours.
Lv4, Haircuts: 3 acceptable styles: High and Tight, Crew Cut & Buzz Cut.
Lv4, Greatness itself: The best revenge.
Lv5, Discipline: The ability to repeat a boring thing over and over again.
Lv5, Attire: Shorts over 6" are capri pants. Shorts under 6" are European.
Lv5, Self-reliance: Trust yourself.
Lv5, Suspicion: Do not trust anyone else.
Lv5, Skim milk: That's right. It's on here twice. Avoid it.
Lv6, Cow protein
Lv6, Pig protein
Lv6, Chicken protein
Lv6, Romantic love
Lv6, Deer protein
Lv6, Fish(Sport only!)
Lv7, Intensity: Give 100%. 110% is impossible. Only idiots recommend that.
Lv7, Torso: Should be thick and impenetrable.
Lv7, Old wooden sailing ships: They're beautiful.
Lv7, B.O.: Cultivating a manly musk puts your opponents on notice.
Lv7, Stillness: Don't waste energy moving unless necessary.
Lv7, Skim milk: Avoid it.
Lv7, Cursing: There's only one bad word: Taxes. If any other word is good enough for sailors, it's good enough for you.
Lv8, Friends: One to three is sufficient.
Lv8, Property rights: They exist. Do not let them be taken away from you.
Lv8, Masonry: Walls make you strong. Defending them makes you even stronger.
Lv8, Cabins: Places to rest that are made of logs.
Lv8, Perspiration: Only sweat during physical activey or love making. No emotional sweating.
Lv8, You: You are your biggest ally and your worst enemy, at the same time.
Lv8, Crying: Acceptable at funerals and the Grand Canyon.
Lv8, Physical Fitness
Lv9, Frankness: Cut the B.S.
Lv9, Capitalism: God's way of determining who is smart, and who is poor.
Lv9, Facial hair: Full, thick, and square. Nothing sculpted. If you have to sculpt it, that probably means you can't grow it.
Lv9, Living in the Woods: Live off the land.
Lv9, Rage: One rage every three months is permitted. Try not to hurt anyone who doesn't deserve it.
Lv9, Security: Secure the land.
Lv9, Poise: Sting like a bee. Do not float like a butterfly. That's ridiculous.
Lv9, Handshakes: Firm, Dry, Solid. 3 seconds.
Lv9, Body grooming: Only women shave beneath the neck.

This is just for fun and these are open to wild interpretations.

No points awarded, but they should inspire "Greatness" which will incur improvements in my efforts.

Sidequest 2: Draw the Nerds.

"Creativity is for people who wear glasses and enjoy lying." -- Ron Swanson

Last challenge I had some fun by drawing this owl portrait which also had Rurik in it:

20151023_004212_zpsngyb2r1o.jpg

That was all part of renewing my interest in drawing and painting and pursuing art again. I thought it would be fun for this challenge to make more drawings inspired by the people of the rebellion. You people inspire me, so I thought I'd show you the fruits of that inspiration.

A good artist is well practiced in human portraits/figure, landscape, and still-life. I don't have time or money to take classes or anything. So I'll be lurking on your threads and drawing from your Swolfies and PR pics, snapshots from your adventures, and  your food porn.

Don't worry. No progress photos will be drawn. They are for personal assessment and not artistic purposes. Unless you really want me to. Also, if you want to request such a photo of yours to be "arted", feel free to post it on my thread. I'll accept most of these challenges.

I'll add a bonus point for each drawing I do to be distributed about my goals.

Sidequest 3: Stress management/meditation

FRSGL.jpg

I'm always making a goal of getting back into my meditation routine. Well, here I can earn bonus points. One for every 30 min of meditation. It may be that workouts will be missed, extra calories consumed, or stretching neglected because I'm too damn tired and stressed. Meditation can be used to make up for it. Every minute counts as long as I'm on the cushion, or some place purposeful, breathing with unattached thoughts.

Are you ready?

If my bacon started growing tumors and getting bigger on its own that wouldn't be a problem.

or are you referring to this

I'll have to find and read the actual study. I'm betting there's plenty of holes to poke in it.

I'm looking forward to seeing how very similar our goals are....

I guess it's hard to see that right now. I've got a very low carb keto goal. And I'm going to have to adjust everything to keep the balance and maintain healthy weight loss.

Mine would actually be the result of a lab accident wherein an experiment that used Ron Swanson's DNA to clone super warrior children got contaminated with Jeff Lebowski's.

I'm definitely going to follow that Pyramid of Greatness.  Cool idea.

Agreed.  I had a post-college night shift on my feet, 12hr shifts, in a factory.  The night shifts really really seriously mess with your circadian rhythms - hungry at weird times, you're so tired but then stepping out into the sun wakes you up so sleeping is tough, family members can be a little disrespectful of sleep times (my father retired around the same time I graduated, and still had to mow the lawn on Saturdays, one of the days I had to sleep.  You can mow whenever, why do you insist on Saturdays????).  You have a pretty ambitious challenge, but remember to get some quality sleep.

Oooh, nice theme! And it's participatory!

Night shifts are tough! Take care of yourself and make sure you're getting your sleep in. Earplugs and sleeping in as dark a room as possible helped me when I was on night shifts, and my dad when he did them as well. Also, I found that I had to have an hour or so after I came home to get cleaned up but also read or go online or something to clear my head and relax before I could actually go to bed (although my commute was also about a 2 minute walk, so if you have a longer commute that might not be an issue)

I'll have to find and read the actual study. I'm betting there's plenty of holes to poke in it.

Well, the first thing I can think of (although this is more an issue with the reporting of the study) is that they're saying processed meat increases your risk of colorectal cancers... But when you look at the baseline rates in the population, you're looking at people who are already eating processed meats. So that increase is already accounted for in the baseline rates.

Day 0.2

Goal 1, Keto Nutrition: Doin' okay here. I ate nothing all damn morning early afternoon. Then I made dinner for the family. We had boneless/skinless chicken thighs cooked in spaghetti sauce with onions, peppers, and tomatoes topped with mozzarella. Also some broccolli. I ate three thighs and broccoli. It was awesome. Super tender. And some advice, if you have time, sear that shit before you bake it. It's totally worth the extra time.

I've had a headache since the mid-afternoon. I figured it was the workout and a lack of my salts so I had some whey with calcium and magnesium citrate, and a dash of lite salt. Didn't quite help. Need to eat more.

For the new followers: (Welcome to the Curl-a-sar) I'm currently living with the folks. My mom has joined me at least in part for the low carb diet. She's at least doing the South Beach Diet, well she's on phase two, but she's been on board with low carb cooking lately.

Goal 2, Maintaining a Workout Routine: I did a complex with a 45# plate. The garage/gym was crowded due to my step-dad's truck being there and the sick chicken. (see below) So instead of using a barbell, I used a plate to conserve space. It was a big game changer. The difference in grip and balance through familiar movement really tired me out. I usually go for 10 complexes in 30 min (or at least that's what I did the one other time that I did complexes recently) and I only got through five. Also the not eating thing got to me I'm sure.

More for the newbies: We started raising chickens on Labor Day. One of them has been sick. Carnivores like myself normally would fix a sick chicken with rotisserie treatment. My Mom regards them as pets that lay eggs so it had to be quarantined from the flock in the garage. And that's what made it hard to use a barbell today. Normally the truck is not in there so it's not going to be a problem.

Goal 3, Mobility: Nothing to report.

Life Goal, Working hard for the money: Ummm... I go for my first orientation tomorrow afternoon. So, wow, I'll finally be getting paid for some of my time. I'm looking forward to scoping out the facilities so I can figure out how I'm going to do meals, and where I'll be able to get my mobility work done.

SQ1: The Swanson Pyramid of Greatness -- I'll start posting these on Friday. Once I start working they will probably go up when I get home from work at 5 am. In case you were wondering.

SQ2: The meditation one -- Nothing to report

SQ3: Draw the Nerds -- Tangential thing, last challenge I got an idea for a series of paintings that came to me in a dream. Earlier today I got an idea for an actual painting. Just saying. The idea is top secret for now, also not sure I can really explain it. So that's there, but no nerd drawings yet. I've also got to finish writing a paper from grad school so that's eating into my time right now. I'll be up late working on that. Maybe I'll get some bored-doodling done.

There's this man my mom works with, him and his wife have, among a variety of other animals, chickens. These chickens get a decent burial when they die (of natural causes, of course), rather than ending up in the stew pot. It's strange, but adorable Â¯\_(ツ)_/¯
