*Ok guys, this idea has been floating around my noggin for some time now. At least the last 5-6 years. And, I could never get past the story because I felt like I was missing something in my narrative. Another problem that the protagonist faces? More plot twists? Come to find out, it was another character. A specific character that would help our hero become the badass he is. Enter one of my new found besties, Rurik the Ranger. Yep, it was you all along dude. I needed a character like Rurik in my novel. A supreme badass hunter of the supernatural. My book takes place in the current time and will pull from elements of the show Supernatural, as well as movies like Underworld, Van Helsing, and even a little True Blood #Alcide. I’m very excited to write this on here with the help of you all because I can’t do it alone. I need you guys to keep me accountable for writing this. Even, for those grammar Nazis, please, Nazi away and help with that if you want because I can promise some grammatical errors. I write and think too fast for their not to be, lol.*

“Alright everyone, please come in and get comfortable. There’s open seating up front if you’re not shy.†I looked around as the room began to fill up. “Yes, YOU, come in, come in. How’s the temperature everyone? Good? Is my mic on… Yes, there it goes…â€

“WELCOME.†I said, my voice booming over the microphone. “I’m so excited you decided to join me today!†The round of applause started immediately. There were smiles and bright faces everywhere, and all the attention was on me. I swallowed hard. No matter how kooky and outgoing I could be, somehow I still got nervous in the limelight. Nothing says embarrassing when you’re voice gets shaky on your own story.

“You’re way to kind, everyone, thank you. Really, you should give yourself a round of applause because if not for you, my adoring fans, I would be nowhere.†I let a smile spread across my face like some Great Divide, warming and charming the crowd. I began to clap my hands together, pointing at random people and giving the ever enthusiastic thumbs up. They ate it up like velvety chocolate cake. How had I come from the normalcy life I lived to this one standing before me? It was as if I was a celebrity. I would like to say hard work prevailed all, but there was a dash of luck in there too. It’s the Irish in me.

“So, without further ado and no introduction needed, my name is Ryan Bell.†The applause continued and a few whistles rang out. I chuckled. “Thank you...you guys…†I sighed, “You guys are great. But, my name is Ryan and today we are all gathered here for a reading of book one in the Urban Wolf series!†More applause and cheers. It was a good crowd tonight and I could tell this would be fun. The hoots and hollers simmered down and it sounded like that was my queue to begin.

“I wrote Urban Wolf as kind of a short story back in the day on my Nerd Fitness forums. It was meant to be one entry each week that would take me through one of my many 6-week challenges. What evolved from the ashes is the book that lays before you. It’s been a long journey with writing and actually being able to stick with something, so Urban Wolf is special to me. The actually character, Wolf, is someone I hold very dear to my heart. He is a superhero in a way and someone I’ve wanted to write about for a long time. He is loosely based off myself and I wish I could say all the swanky things he and Rurik have done are a part of my own adventures but I can’t. The Wolf has become his own entity and inspiration. It’s been a true pleasure to share his life with you all. During the reading I ask that you wait until intermission to ask any questions and I promise to answer them for you all.†I scanned the crowd of eager readers and listeners as they hung onto each word I said, some even nodding in respect to my request. They were itching to begin and so was I.

I sat down at my little stool next to my little table in front of the large group. There had to be over 100 people here tonight. On the table were three water bottles and a book bound in a black and red cover. My favorite colors. I eyed the cover, looking down at the book as a proud dad looks at his son when he rides his bike without training wheels for the first time. So much time went into those three hundred plus pages, it was surreal to be here with fans.

“Thank you all again for being here and supporting me and my dream of writing. It means the world to me… now let’s get right into it!†Excitedly I grabbed my book and flipped open to the Prologue. “Blend into the Sprawl-Book One of the Urban Wolf series…†I took a deep breath, exhaling all those frustrations that lead me this point, and began to read aloud.

“My life never began the way it ended. That, I know was a fact. But before I can reveal any sort of ending…you have to understand where it all started, and that was the night they kidnapped my family…â€

My life never began the way it ended. That, I know was a fact. But before you can understand the ending, you have to understand where it all started, and that was the night they kidnapped my family…

It was a Friday night, eight days before Halloween, so the fall weather around Texas was barely settling in. I’d been around these parts my whole life and I can never remember a truly “cold†Halloween. This made the costumes and the parties a little more fun. But, for me, Halloween was all about my kids. I had three little boys that were five all the way to fifteen months. Rudy Jr or RJ for short, Dexter and Oliver. My sweet boys. I called them my “wolf pupsâ€. Funny story about the term “wolf pupsâ€. See, my wife, Helen, thought I was a werewolf. Ha! I know, right? Now let that sink in a little. For me, I thought she was being funny and cute. She was trying to live out some teen fantasy and wanted me to be a part of it. We met when movies and shows like Twilight, Underworld and True Blood were big, and the werewolf/vampire craze was a real thing. A supernatural pandemic.

Down to the last detail, my wife said that I had specific qualities of someone who would be a werewolf and she knew deep down that I was a part of her supernatural fantasy. I was tall, pushing over six feet two with a lean frame. I ran hot...like all werewolves, since we are supposed to run a few degrees warmer and several thermometer test later prove her otherwise incorrect. She just comes back with an adorable excuse, saying I altered my temperature so she can’t find out that I’m a werewolf. And last but not least, I deal with a short temper…and WE ALL know that werewolves have a short fuse. Its facts, people. I guess I should clarify. It wasn’t just me having a short fuse, but a very short protective fuse. Mess with me, cool. Mess with the people I love, not a very wise decision. Everything she did and tried to prove was just too cute to ignore, so, I played along with being her wolf. Little did I know how far from being a fantasy this actually was.

Helen could never be a werewolf though. The transformation from human to werewolf was an excruciating experience and the baby could never survive such torment. It was her job to raise our werewolf “pups†and it was my job to protect them. I had become The Wolf. He was my alternate ego. He was everything I wanted to be when in reality I was just a normal guy. I didn’t possess this power that my wife so longingly wanted me too, and yet I played along for years. There would be no “Wolf†without my wife.

I had got home a little later than normal that Friday night because I wanted to pick up some dinner for everyone. It was a pay day, so I stopped by the Whataburger near our house and got everyone their favorite. Pay day Whataburger Day had become a sort of tradition around our household. Me, I got the A1 burger with no onions, large fry and a coke to drink. It wasn’t part of my usual healthy eating habits, but it was pay day and that meant Whataburger for the wolf pack. The aroma from the fries alone had me itching to go into full beast mode on my whole meal while in the car, but I managed to show a little restraint. Ok, maybe not much because I reached in the bag and pulled out some hot, golden French fries. I only had three or four, the others had to be saved for some fancy ketchup.

The aura around the house is what I first noticed…and it scared me. None of the lights were on and there was this eeriness about the place. It was too quiet. But, when I saw that the front door was slightly ajar, I ran as fast as I could, spilling over all the drinks I had just bought. I’d had thoughts like this before. Thoughts of how I would feel if I ever came home to something like this. What I thought and how I actually felt were two different things, entirely. I felt like my heart had been ripped out by some unknown force and ground together in sick agony. The knot in my stomach only tightened more as I neared the doorway, pushing it open to reveal my pitch black entry way. Nausea swept over me and I felt like I needed to vomit. Panic stricken, I charged in and started calling out names, but the house was empty. Dead. Tears developed in my eyes and I screamed out my wife’s name one more time. Nothing but silence.

I rounded the kitchen corner and spotted something out of the corner of my eye. The sour smell of blood filled my nostrils and my eyes widened in fear. It was a small trail of blood leading from the kitchen to the back door and out to the backyard. Wasting no time, I sprinted outside, only to find absolutely nothing. The trail of blood halted on the dewy, dark green grass. Now, frustration and panic turned into full on anger and rage. What happened here and where the hell was my family!
I ran back into the house and checked the bedrooms. Everything looked to be intact. It didn’t look like there was signs of a struggle and the only clue I had was the small trail of blood. “Damnit.†I cursed. My mind was racing a million miles an hour and I felt light headed. Dark thoughts flooded my brain again and all the hairs on my neck stood rigid. I growled, shaking them away then quickly made my way to the master bedroom. “Stay level headed, Rudy. Your family is fine.†I told myself with as much confidence as I could muster up.

The door was closed and it was never closed. My heart was pounding in my chest and I could hear the blood pumping through my veins. Fight or flight mode took over and I had zero intentions on running. Underneath my breath, I muttered a quick prayer and turned the door handle, throwing the door open.

I stood back, looking into the dark room. Someone was in there. I could hear feint breathing and sweat trickled down my back, sending chills back up the way it came. Screaming from my diaphragm to amplify my voice, I yelled curses into the blackness. “I don’t know who the hell you are but if you’ve harmed my family, so help me God… I’ll rip your head off!†I was not making a threat; I was making a promise. The knot in my stomach tightened causing me to see spots and it felt as if an imaginary weight stood over me, crushing me with a slow consistency that was not only painful, but causing me to black out. Anxiety, anger, frustration, confusion and fear all overwhelmed me at once, making my knees slightly buckle and my heart skipped a beat.

Silence owned the moment for what seemed like years before the sound of metal slicing through air interrupted it. Somehow, I managed to dodge out of the way as a giant object came sailing out of the black room. With a loud, crashing thud, the object had buried its way halfway into the hall closet behind me. A battle axe? And a large one at that. What the fuck?

The length will vary, but after me weekly write-up each week, I’ll post the next part of the story, so in order to find out what happens, you have to keep reading . And just to throw this out there, I may post more than one part of the story each week. Depends on how deep I get into it lol.

Now, onto the rucking goals!

Goal #1: It’s my Rucking life!

So, RuckFit is becoming a thing. What?! You didn’t know this? Well, listen closely kids…

We briefly mentioned it over on the Rucking thread and Rurik and I decided to make it a thing. An actually curriculum that one can follow when first stepping on the ruck scene and not knowing where to start. So, together, we have joined super awesome Ranger forces and have created RuckFit . This goal is to get me back on a schedule that I can maintain optimal fitness with RuckFit . This consist of 3x rucks, 2x Crossfit inspired workouts and 1x trail run that are to be performed during the week. My schedule will look like this:

Monday: Ruck-Heavy
Tuesday: Crossfit or Equivalent
Wednesday: Ruck- Light (more of an active recovery day)
Thursday: Crossfit or Equivalent
Friday: Ruck-Medium
Saturday: Trail Run
Sunday: Rest

werewolflondon_main.jpg

Possible Points: +2 STA, +2 STR, +1 DEX

Goal #2: Ruck my WOD

RuckFit is more than just rucking. It’s knowing how to ruck your WOD. All day. And all night. During the course of the challenge, Rurik and I will be working towards 100 total miles rucked, and that means 50 miles split down the middle for the two of us. On top of rucking at least 50 miles, we are required to complete 6 rucking WOD’s over the duration of the 6-weeks and 3 RuckFit Challenge workouts each that we have created ourselves or otherwise pulled from the Pathfinder source where RuckFit was initially born. Though similar to goal #1, here is where the specifics come to play and we get a little messy. Ruck yeah!

RuckFit Challenge Workouts:
1. Two minutes maximum Push-ups. Two minutes maximum Sit-ups.
2. Five mile mountain/hill terrain ruck.
3. Five mile overnight ruck. Must start and end during night hours.
4. Carry 20 pounds of coupons for 3 miles of your ruck. Any item will do.
5. Ruck 27 miles on top of the 50 mile requirement.
6. Don't stop rucking until you've hit 10 miles.

Underworld-Rise-of-the-Lycans-screencaps

Possible Points: +2 STR and +3 DEX

Goal #3: Write a rucking story!

So, as you read above, this challenge is also heavy on the RP writing. The story above is about a man named Rudy and his search for his family. They’ve been taken by werewolves in order to draw Rudy out in the open and along the way he makes an unlikely ally in Rurik the ageless Viking who’s battled supernatural creatures for the last couple hundred years. This will be a unique way for me to write a short story without putting a ton of pressure on myself because it will be a part of my 6-week challenge (says the guy writing the story). This means I have to make it a priority J. The goal is to spend a minimum of 1 hour a week devoted to continuing the adventures of our favorite supernatural crime-fighting duo.

giphy.gif

Possible Points: +3 CHA

Goal #4: Putting Rucking in Work (Gotta keep the ruck theme going!)

The Holidays are fast approaching and we are a giving family. I want to be able to get gifts for EVERYONE I love and cherish (which ends up being a lot of people). So, along with clearing out the nastiness known as debt, I will work a minimum of 5 hrs of OT a week, to be able to gift ALL the things, I am only allowed 30 min lunches, and at least $100 each paycheck will go towards the Debt Monster.

1e24e18be5c59e5f091d9b2bbc4fc39c.jpg

Possible Points: +2 CHA, +1 WIS

And there you have it NF. I hope the hype was enough to get everyone on board and taking the time to read the story. Even if no one reads it, I’m excited to continue this werewolf idea so see how much I can actually get done in a 6-week time frame. I’m also excited about getting back on my Crossfit workouts.

I take on the Spartan Beast on Halloween, so it’s right before the actual challenge starts. BUT, I’ll have a whole write-up ready to go for everyone the next day. This will be completely separate from my RP, but could be lengthy nonetheless J. I’m so ready for this fucking race!

Some other UBER swanky things going in this challenge?

· The 11-13th I’ll be heading down to San Antonio to spend a few days with Brother Tanktimus and we’re going to do a bunch of Ranger-ly things, like: ruck/hike Enchanted Rock. (I saw some parkour spots I could probably get down on lol.) We’re also going to be grubbing out in Fredericksburg, eating wonderful German food and just kicking it, Texas Ranger style lol.
· The 14th is my Birthday!
· Thanksgiving and Black Friday off

I'm in for a rucking good time.  Love the story so far!!  Side note...  I came home to my unexpectedly empty house once and complete with an overturned kids wagon in the front yard and a high chair covered in blood.  Scariest.  thing.  ever.  No one was kidnapped and no battle axes!  My daughter was bit by a dog and my husband panicked.

Thanks Marauder! Holy crap...that's scary! I tried to convey my actual fear when I wrote that part and I KNOW I'd be freaking out, lol. I'm glad everyone was OK, sheesh!

double post.  argh

Post something werewolf-y!

Awesome start to the challenge...  I'll be eagerly waiting for the next installment!!!

Thanks Terra! Glad to have you on board this go round!

Whew...man. AshPS posted on my other thread that this one was up so I came FLYING over! I noticed that there where already like 10-12 threads. AHH! And then I saw Ruriks...so I clicked on his, read half of it, then jumped over to post my own. So much rucking excitement! Oh, and then I went back after mine looked good and ready to finish his. This is going to be a busy evening, I can tell. I'm so happy that this 6-weeks is up already. I guess my 36 hour window was about spot on :)

That was incredible my friend and worth the wait! :)

You know I will be here reading every word and cheering you on every second. ;)

Psyched and looking forward to our new journeys together! Now ROCK the Rangers Wolf! :triumphant:

I'm totally digging this RuckFitâ„¢  thing.  Now, you just need to figure out how to combine it with SurvivalParkourâ„¢ for the ultimate outdoor training program.   :)

I'm sure you'll totally dominate that Spartan Beast on Saturday!  I can't wait to hear all about it!

And hooray for vampire and werewolf themes!  I especially find your werewolf backstory with your wife really cute!  While I don't personally have as cute of a relationship backstory, I'll have to (somewhat shamefully ;)  ) admit that my husband and I met at a Vampire the Masquerade LARP.

Ummmm... My mind is blown. This is fucking incredible. Underworld, Van Helsing, True Blood - I am the vampire to your werewolf, my friend haha. Underworld is one of my all-time favourite vampire/werewolf movies, too. There was so much 'squee'-ing going on while I read that, I can't even explain to you how amazeballs this is going to be. Can't wait to see what you and Rurik have in store for us!!

FYI: in the spoiler part of post #1, you refer to your wife as Helen in paragraph 1, I believe, and then Heather in paragraph 3 (you wanted to change the names for the book parts, right?). If you ever want someone to take a look over your posts, let me know! :D

And Sub'd, obviously

Aww yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed the story :). I'll rock the Rangers so long as you promise to rock the Adventurers?!

In my seminary days I was a proofreader for people's papers, I'd be happy to edit for you. When you come down bring a printout of what you have so far and I'll mark the hell out of it for you.

Great start to the story.

Swanky dude, will do! Hopefully I'll have quite a bit written by then and we can knock it out ðŸ»... Although, are we gonna have time with all our ranger-y fun to be had?? We may be too stuffed with yummy German goodness to do anything lol.

That's actually a great idea, Nymeria. Combine both programs to make the ULTIMATE program.. Hmmmm. *Wolf ponders this grand thought whilst stroking his goatee*

I'm more than antsy right now because I'm ready for this race. Fun times ahead too, looks like it might rain lol. So not only will I battle the Beast but Mother Nature as well.. Yikes!

That is really cool about your hubby! I was into Vampire the Masquerade for a while. White Wolf had some cool RPG's.. And of course the werewolf one!! I enjoy our little werewolf thing we got going on and is the spark that drives this current RP.. It's still cracks me up. She really does think I'm secretly a werewolf ! But how could I resist?? The chance to become something more in her eyes.. I hopped right at the opportunity :)

Hahaha, I see bits and pieces of your mind splattered on the floor :)

Yay! I'm glad you are digging the theme!! And I need a Vamp to my smelly dog hahaha. Underworld is great.. I'm a HUGE fan of Rise of the Lycans and Lucien in that movie. Michael Sheen totally fuckin knocked the ball out of the park with that one!

Yes! Ok, and I fixed the name dilemma. I did want to change the names around and I guess I missed that other "Heather" lol. I will take any kinda help you offer, Ruth. Also, being a fan of vampires and werewolves.. I may ask you to create a vampire character... Would that be ok??

Let the beast roam free, I always say :)

Hell yeah!!

DUDE!.... Dude.... dude... DUDE!!!

That was great! Although I kinda wished you hadn't put those spoiler alerts as your third goal, I loved the story! Now I'm excited to see what happens next!

Aww man, I didn't mean to spoil anything. I promise, there is so much more to that little synopsis... There will be plenty of surprises in store my friend!

I'm glad you enjoyed it though :) and thanks for the support as always brother Red!

Yes, I loved that movie too! He was so freakin bad ass, and I loved that they centered it around him and his past. I always wanted more info on him.

Cool, just let me know! I'll look over whatever you'd like me to.

Um, I'd be totally honoured to create a vampire character!

Saw rucking(so wats to auto correct to fucking), am intrigued. Will read it all tomorrow.

Lol, I've been punning "ruck" and "rucking" for weeks now. It's so much fun when people ask why I've got a weighted backpack on and I tell them I'm rucking and they think I said fucking. Ohhhhhhhhh the faces and reactions I get. Love it and glad you're on board sir!

Whatever happened with the nail biting thing from a few challenges ago? As for time to proofread, that's what the USPS is for. I can mail the copy back to you once I mark it up.

The almighty USPS.. I hear ya dude. Well you have yourself a deal, my friend! I've done a lot better with my nails but still bite them from time to time. I haven't been keeping up with my burpees either... So there's that. Now that I've been called out, time to get back on the burpees for nail biting! I would love to have this nasty habit kicked by Christmas

Hey man, looking for more threads to follow and thought I'd give yours a go this time round as I see a lot of you on other people's Challenges. Ruck on!

I appreciate that a lot Big Show! If you like stories, werewolves and weighted backpacking then you're in for a rucking good time, sir! Do you have your challenge up yet? *Wolf wonders off to go find Big Shows challenge*

You got yourself a deal my friend! ;)

Hey, I'm loving the pics you added to the intro! Awesomely cool! :)

Supernatural FTW!!

Have a fabulous Tuesday Wolf!

Hahah yay! I'm glad you noticed the pics I inserted. I had to go back through with Tapatalk and add them lol!

Love Supernatural and I hope you have a wonderful Tuesday as well, Ash! We had stopped watching SN around season 6.. So we have lots of catching up to do...

Still need to catch up on Walking Dead...

It's been a pretty good evening over here in the Wolf Den . We went over my moms for my step dads bday and ate dinner. She made this badass meatloaf with mashed potatoes and a huge salad. Lucky for me there were leftovers and I snatched them up! I did eat a little bit of some red velvet cake but hardly any at all. With my upcoming race, I'm making sure to eat super clean this week and drink a lake full of water during this time as well.

I'm just ecstatic that the challenge is here and I can really focus on writing and getting back in a workout groove. Besides wanting to become a certified trainer, maybe even Spartan SGX trainer, I've always, always wanted to write a book. So, this challenge may end up being boring from a normal Wolf standpoint, but I couldn't be more focused and ready to take on this story and RuckFit .

One thing I didn't contemplate for week 1... DOMS

So, my RuckFit schedule may be a little thrown off on the official first week, but I'll make do and ranger the hell up!

Rurik, let's do the damn thing bubba!

Yeah, I felt the same. I love Selene and Michael.. But Lucien was just so BAMF! They did a good job on that movie.

But will someone, PLEASE get me Kate Beckinsale in that leather jump suit! *drool*
